live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> new clues in the murder of a bay area dental student. the perm items found miles from her home and now we know what the victim was doing right before her death. good evening. i'm katie. the 37-year-old was found dead in her albany apartment on monday and now police are releasing new information about the case. her perm belongings were found in a trashcan about two miles away in richmond. lilian kim is live at the albany police department with the latest. lilian? >> katie albany police believe the items were removed and among them were bloody clothing. >> he comes back right away with bags in each hand and says look, i found this in your garbage. there is a really high end

purse here. >> this richmond resident elizabeth duke was surprised by what a friend found in her trashcan. a coach handbag and inside was someone's id and credit cards and a bag of stained clothing. >> i wanted to see more, but i was afraid to touch it. i didn't touch it. what did you see on it? i just saw blood. >> albany police say the items came from a 37-year-old dental student. paul was found monday with a gunshot wound to the head in her apartment one day after they believe she was murdered. they hope the trashcan connection will bring in more tips. >> we hope it may generate more calls that will help us discover why those items were left there and who did it. at this point we are going off the assumption that they were removed from the crime scene. >> paul was from india and on track to graduate from the ucsf dental program.

paul had just come home from the temple the night she was killed. >> the community was shocked when we heard. you live in a place you can get shot in your own house. >> the city's last homicide was more than 10 years ago. two additional officers have now been assigned to the case bringing the total number of investigators to six. in albany, lilian kim, abc7 news. >> the fallout continues over racist and homophobic text messages and a sergeant convicted on corruption charges. sergio is live in the newsroom with more. sergio? >> katie, these were text messages sent on the officer's private phones but we learned about them because they were included in court documents. federal prosecutors spelled out some of the messages to try to convince a judge not to let the sergeant out of jail while he appeals his corruption conviction. >> four san francisco policemen are entangled in the

scandal because they are believed to exchange toxic text messages with the police sergeant. tonight the police chief says he wants those officers off the force and so does much of the rest of the department. >> if these officers have made these statements they also support my action that i will do everything i can to separate them from the police department as we do not want to have them among us. >> the attorney representing two of the officers in this scandal says his clients have a right to privacy and to keep their jobs. >> i don't think anyone expects that their private texts are going to be read and published. i think that comes as a surprise to everybody. >> the surprise are michael robinson and michael selas. they are among the four who were assigned duties that keep them away from the public. his clients are devastated about this. >> my clients are remorseful. they accept responsibility and they are remorseful for the comments.

the best way to put it is they are ashamed. >> most of the texts released are too graphic to air. a message from april 18th reads 20,000 bees in vacaville near school but they are not as dangerous like black people. the investigation of these four officers is now the highest priority and should be completed in a month. >> the san francisco branch of the naacp announced they will hold a news conference on the steps of the halve justice to address this on going investigation. abc7 news. >> thank you sergio. in the east bay a 36-year-old san ramon man was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a tree off interstate 680. the motorcycle wound up on the grassy area. no other vehicles were involved. freeway ramps reopened an hour after the crash. investigators identified a man killed in a multi car pile up on interstate 580.

52-year-old all bright -- albright came to a stop in heavy traffic and at least 16 cars were involved in the chain reaction crash. six other people were hurt. a fire engine that responded to an accident helped prevent a more serious incident. the fire truck parked behind the scene of a roll over accident. that's when police say an inuh 10 testify driver -- inattentive driver slammed into the fire truck. he was taken to the hospital with major injuries. the two vic -- victims were treated for minor injuries. the chp threatened a man who jumped off the antioch bridge. the same man tried to jump off the bridge last month. this time police say he was on a motorcycle speeding 80 miles an hour on city streets in oakley. he lead police to the bridge where he climbed the railing and threatened to jump, but officers managed to grab him.

>> turning to weather we will head over to drew for a look at live doppler hd. >> and a taste of summer to start off the weekend. while the temperatures cooled off today it was a rather pleasant day across the region. yesterday san jose and san francisco set record highs in the midto upper 80s. today we saw temperatures cool anywhere from 9 to 17 degrees. oakland also set a record and cooled off by 10 degrees topping off in the upper 60s. livermore and half moon bay and santa cruz are all cooling off between 4 and 11 degrees over the weekend. the cooling trend will continue into monday as we head back to work and school. we'll detail the numbers with the full accu-weather forecast. it may be warm and dry here but boston is breaking the opposite records. it is the snowiest season

there since 1872. the official measure was 108.6 inches and the season is not over yet. developing news police in ferguson missouri have a man in custody for the shooting of two police officers last week. it culminates a massive manhunt and there could be other suspects. >> he is now charged with two counts of assault in the first degree for the two police officers who were shot. >> prosecutors say 20-year-old jeffrey williams was the trigger man whose gunfire cut down two police officers outside police headquarters. this was the scene early thursday when bullets turned protest into chaos. >> he acknowledged his participation in firing the shots. >> prosecutors say williams fired a 40 caliber pistol from a vehicle and williams said he wasn't aiming at police. >> it is possible he was firing shots at someone other than the police and struck the

police officers. >> both officers are recouperating at home and they say their investigation is on going. >> there may have been other people who were with him at the time who were participating. >> attorney general eric holder says it sends a clear message that acts of violence against our law enforcement personnel will never be tolerated. ferguson is deeply divided after the shooting of michael brown last august and the recent report from the u.s. justice department that found widespread inequality and law enforcement. even so police say it was information from the community that lead to this arrest. abc news, new york. the car belonging to a rookie los angeles police officer wanted as a person of interest in a fatal shooting has been found. henry solice's car was found near where a man was gunned down two hours earlier. he was off duty during the early friday shooting and failed to report to work the next day. still to come on abc7 news at 11:00, it is something out

fbi agents arrested robert durst last night. he is accused in the 2000 murder of author susan berman. he received a master's from berkeley in 1979. he was long linked to her death. you will np now he denied any involvement and he said as much in a special about his life that links him to the 1982 disappearance of his wife and two deaths including berman's. >> it had nothing to do with susan berman's death. >> he was asked about hand writing similarities a letter he wrote and another sent anonymously to police notifying them of a quote cadaver at berman's home. durst later wore a microphone into the bathroom and said he killed them all. durst's lawyer said he will agree to be take -- taken to l.a. for charges. families of the sandy hook

organizers after decades of opposition. boston's mayors have been boycotting since 1995. that was the year the parade organizers went to the u.s. supreme court in an effort to exclude gays and they won on first amendment grounds. new details on huge heaps of trash left strewn across fort mason park in san francisco. the national park service says several volunteers showed up at the park earlier today to help clean up the mess. these are photos from one of those volunteers who lives in the neighborhood. people at the park say a large gathering took place there on saturday but no special events were issued. >> this is a beautiful park and it is a big thing people do and they hang out at the parks and the fact that people left it in that condition is amazing. abc7 news told you earlier this month about the garbage

funding as congress considers a new budget. the obama administration is launching a fish tracking system in an effort to eradicate the illegal fishing fishing and seafood fraud it was announced at the seafood conference in boston. the system will let consumers know where their fish was caught processed and stored. 90% of the seafood in the u.s. is imported and only 1% of seafood imports are inspected. >> scientists say a new breakthrough in cholesterol drugs could greatly reduce the risk for heart attacks and death. they presented their research at a cardiology conference in san diego today. they say the experimental class of drug can reduce the rate of some heart problems by half. however, side effects remain a problem as they can harm thinking and memory. the fda will decide if the drug will be allowed out on the market this summer. a group of historians dropped a wreath in the san francisco bay where a local

this is abc7 news. >> tesla is working on an update to the model s that will help ease the anxiety of drivers worried about the charge. today he tweeted that a software update is coming this week intended to end range anxiety. the term he is referring to affects drivers who are afraid to test the range. musk has a news conference scheduled for thursday morning where he will share more about the update. >> when you deposit money into a savings account how safe is it? a marin county woman thought her savings were secure until she found out hackers were

transferring her money into their pockets. michael finney stepped in to help. >> reporter: the last time she checked she had about $8,000 in her savings account. that's why she was so surprised to see the e-mail. >> i got a notice of insufficient funds. how can that be? >> the notice said she didn't have enough to cover her latest purchase. yet, she hadn't bought anything. >> she checked her wells fargo statements and was shocked to find a bunch of strange charges like a thousand dollar payment for scwann's frozen foods. >> i didn't know what it was. >> she found another payment for more frozen foods and then 700 and then 600. all to schwann's. >> it was like they were running their restaurant. >> and that is just for december. she found payments to pg&e and

charter communications. none were made by her. thieves were using her account to pay their own bills. >> it was distressing to realize that somebody was dipping in and using it however they wanted. >> the crooks simoned $8,000 from her account over six months until there was nothing left. >> i felt violated. how did this happen? this is my savings account. who has access to it and how do they get access? >> no one at wells fargo could explain it and police are investigating. >> i was told there are a thousand ways to get access to the account which was more distressing. >> wells fargo reimbursed her for the first two months of fraudulent charges about $3200. by law she would be entitled to law if she had reported the crime right away, but kim says she didn't even know it was happening. >> it was in a savings account so i thought it was safe. >> the bank looked into her

case again. turns out scwann's and the other per president chas paid back the stolen money and wells fargo turned it to kim and say we continuously look for unauthorized transactions and it is important to monitor accounts frequently. the sooner we are aware of unauthorized transactions the faster we can act to prevent fraud. kim will be checking hers. >> it was a hard lessoned learned. >> police are investigating leads on who was ordering all of the frozen food and all of this points out another reason to check your statements often. by law if you report the fraud within two days the bank must reimburse you all but $50. i posted a link. you can see them at abc7news.com. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. another check of the forecast now and the clouds have arrived.
