good afternoon. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm lauren. let's head up to sky 7 hd showing east bay commuters on the side after flames erupted at the height of the morning commute. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield tells us about the scary moments nearly 30 years ago this stirred up for system. >> reporter: people outside the tunnel could see the smoke billowing out of it this morning. here is the view captured from sky 7. here is what it looked like inside. herb price shot this video with his camera phone of a car fire that chased several people out of the tunnel forcing them to

abandon their vehicle. >> everybody was like get out, get out! >> reporter: you were running? >> yes, everybody was running jumping out the car. it was serious. >> reporter: as a the smoke thickened inside the tunnel, people said it was tough to breathe. >> imagine being stuck inside during a barbecue and the barbecue being inside ten times worse. >> it was pretty bad. you felt like you needed to get out of the tunnel. >> reporter: look what is left. this was a ford taurus. the ford hit this saturn before bursting into flames. the driver saw the fire and had to think fast. >> i panicked and i couldn't get out of the car because the doors were locked. i tried to kick the door out. i had to kick this door out to get out of the car. >> reporter: long-time bay area residents couldn't help but think about the deadly accident that happened in the tunnel in 1982 when seven people were

killed. >> scary. it brought flash backs of the tanker blowing up years ago. i know i was a kid but it had that feel to it, so everybody felt that way. we ran out of the tunnel fast. >> reporter: this started because of a stalled car and then a couple of other cars crashed when they didn't realize there was a backup and one of those cars caught fire. chp says this is a great example of slowing down and always being ready for the unexpected. in oakland amy hollyfield. the highway patrol is investigating what happened when a taxi went airborne in fairfield killing one passenger this morning. >> let's show you this now before we get to the taxi story. following this mess in southbound 680. at least seven cars became intangled just before 6:00 this morning. >> yeah, the chp closed all

lanes but one almost instantly triggering a backup that stretched almost eight miles. >> several ambulances arrived to the scene. with all the traffic problems this morning, you may find it helpful to navigate around jams using ways app. >> you can download it and join on apple's app store. napa county sheriff's department ties say a shooting suspect killed himself after officers cornered him in a wooded area. the suspect took deputyies on a chase after the initial shooting around noon. he then took off running prompting this intense search near the napa sonoma line. people were advised to stay inside their homes and a high school was under lockdown. >> police say two more suspects in last week's deadly shooting of an oakland mother are in

custody. 30-year-old pierce was caught in the cross fire a week ago today. both suspects are 29 years old and charged with accessory to murder. a third person arrested on the same charge this weekend was released. a fourth suspect 19-year-old anthony sims has been charged with murder in pierce's death. a san jose police officer accused of raping a woman and roughing up his ex-girlfriend is changing his plea for a third time. jeffrey graves entered a not guilty plea today. he initially pleaded not guilty but changed to no contest this week after prosecutors requested to add enhancements that could put him in a life sentence. he's accuse of raping a woman after a driving her to a hotel after a domestic dispute she had with her the naacp said the san police officers sent racist

and homophobic texts to each other. they were revealed to convince a judge not to let him out of jail. now coming up at 5:00, vic lee has the naacp's reaction and how one of the accused officers is thinking about stepping down. a father in the mission district injured in a fire died. the 38-year-old died saturday from injuries. last wednesday the family's apartment at 24th street and tree avenue caught fire. two other siblings and the mother were taken to the hospital but they are recovering. firefighters acted quickly to rescue all five from the building. the cause of that fire remains under investigation. all right. now to the infamous real estate heir arrested in a 15-year cold case investigation. >> robert durst was arrested.

>> marcy gonzalez has the story. >> reporter: robert durst in a new orleans courtroom, his attorney insisting he is not guilty in the shooting death of his friend susan berman in 2000. a contrast to durst's confession. which aired for the first time just last night on the finally of the documentary series "the jinx". >> there it is. >> reporter: the six-part series profiled berman's death and the unsolved disappearance of durst's first wife kathy in 1982 and the murder of durst's neighbor in 1981. in interviews for the documentary, he repeatedly insisted he was not a killer. off camera while in a bathroom apparently unaware his microphone was on, the bombshell audio was recorded two.

years later an editor discovered it and handed it to police. >> it was so chilling to hear it. >> reporter: the 71-year-old was taken into custody saturday where he was registered under a fake name and according to the police report, he had a gun. the lapd issued the warrant says the hbo series had nothing to do with his arrest. the fbi believes when he was arrested, he may have been trying to flee to cuba though his attorney denyies that. durst is expected to be brought back to los angeles to stand trial. >> spencer christian is away today. >> yeah, drew is here with the forecast. >> we're talking about a cold front nearing the region. live doppler 7 hd will show you it's a gray day out there and we're tracking moisture through the north bay and on to san francisco at this hour. live doppler 7 hd has the powerful capability of slicing through the atmosphere and

an amtrak train struck a car when it hit a car. witnesses say the driver of the car waited near the tracks and waved other cars by. when the train approached she pulled on the tracks and stopped. the train operator saw the car but was unable to stop in time. no passengers were hurt. a private candle light vigil will be held tonight in san francisco for a dental student found shot to death in her albany apartment. police believe she was killed when she returned to her apartment after attending a service. police are analyzing evidence, just two miles away in richmond they found a 37-year-old driver's license credit cards and bloody clothes in a residence's trash can that resident is not under suspicion. this is the first homicide in under a decade. jurors in the bombing trial got a first-hand look at the bullet riddled bloodstained boat

that joehe hid in. they went to see it and it had at least 108 bullet holes faded bloodstains and aled confession. he sat by quietly as jurors looked over the boat. the 21-year-old is charged in a 30-count indictment and could get the death penalty if convicted. betting on baseball trying again to get back in the good graces of major league baseball. rose has submitted a new request to be reinstated. baseball's all-time career hitter to a lifetime ban near august 1989 after an investigation concluded he bet on the cincinnati reds to win while he managed the team. rose applied for reinstatement in 1997 and met with bud in 2002. the new commissioner replaced him in january. facebook is clarifying it's

rules for nudity and offensive content. the dos and don'ts have not changed the facebook says it's making it easier for users to understand what is allowed. nudity is still mostly blocked or will quickly be removed. facebook says bullying hate speech criminal activity and self-injury are banned. the new guide will be on facebook and sent to user whose complain about what others post. in the meantime yahoo e-mail users have a new optional way to log into their accounts that will no longer require them to remember a traditional password. the tech giant is offering on demand passwords where you can have new passwords every time you need to log on. users interested should go to the settings section then security on their yahoo page to set it up. now to the east bay where an investigation is underway in pittsburgh after an out of control big rig smash into a

restaurant killing the driver. now we're hearing from an eyewitness that saw it unfold this happened this morning at railroad avenue. wayne freedman joins us live now, wayne? >> reporter: good afternoon, cheryl. this is an on going all-day event. you can see that going on over my shoulder. this is the big rig that crashed in here this morning that was carrying two trailers filled with gravel. it came barrelling down the road. according to an eyewitness, the driver had problems with the brakes. he had video, in fact after that driver passed him, which is shot by marvin thompkins dodd. he says he could hear the truck driver stepping on the brake. he says he could smell the clutch. he said there was no stochpping this 18 wheeler. he said no brakes no control, no honking, no nothing.

this truck did clip a couple cars on the way in. those people were lucky to walk away. one of the men involved in one of those trucks said i'm a fortunate man he said, this is my birthday, march 16th is my new birthday. he figures the difference for life and death for him was roughly four feet. as we come back live again now. this is going to take awhile. it took them until well past noon to get the body of the driver out. they think they know the identity. they are 80% certain he was burned so badly they have to make sure and notify the next of kin. the trucking companies involved, too. we're hoping for more information on who the company is what the record is and why the brakes may have failed. a lot unfolding in pittsburgh now. that's the latest cheryl. >> wayne, difficult situation for everyone. thank you. let's turn our attention to the weather forecast. glorious weekend but changed a bit today. >> it has.

>> sprinkles up there that never hit the ground. >> there are spots where we got a trace of wind. that trace is what we've been seeing. let's take a look and show you over cast shies on this monday a gray day and we are tracking just a slug of very light moisture. we'll press in a little closer locally into the north bay where we have had reports of trace rainfall around san rafael and north in santa rosa and even sprinkle activity made it's way into san francisco. you do notice where you live this picture sent in by stacy showing you on her windshield, yes, you do see a few sprinkles out there and that's about all we're seeing at this hour with this front moving through. out there right now temperature-wise, 66 in oakland 63 in downtown san francisco and 6 3 in napa. 71 in fremont and 72 in san jose. live look from the tower cam showing you downtown san francisco in the foreground, the

high cloud cover overhead in the forecast does call for those clouds sticking around overnight and those sprinkles possible early on throughout the evening. tomorrowist tomorrow it's a much different day. satellite and radar will show you ahead of a cold front watching clouds stream in from the south. it was gray today and bring us shower activity in the north bay and in san francisco. here is that cold front and fortunately, the blunt of it well north. as it crosses overnight tonight it will clear out the skies. monday evening lots of clouds. perhaps a sprinkle later on by 10:00. watch as the clouds disappear. by tuesday morning, the north bay starting to see clearing skies and everybody will see sunshine for st. patrick's day and mild temperatures will return. so, the week ahead for san jose specifically, take a look at the average high this time of year. 67 degrees by thursday more than ten degrees above that with temperatures nearing 80 degrees

dead after crashing into a restaurant in pittsburgh. the crash set off an explosion that destroyed a mexican food restaurant. it's impacting adjacent businesses and a industrial map on railroad avenue. the truck may have had mechanical problems. >> a man hunt for a shooting suspected ended after a sheriff's deputies say the man killed himself. the man was shot at dahl vineyards. he lead a pursuit and ran and prompted a brief lockdown in napa. the state water board is set to vote tomorrow on new restrictions to reduce water use. this comes just days after a nasa report that found our state has just one year of water left. david louie is live with details on these new proposal rules.

david, it's getting awfully dire. >> reporter: it really is. in urban areas, it's estimated we use 70% of the water to keep lawns green or water shrubs. californians have to up the conversation watering outdoors only twice a week. many water districts and even the governor asked for a 20% voluntary cut back in water use. as we go into a fourth year of drought, the reduction is under 9% statewide. so to boost conversation, the agency is going to ask local water districts without existing landscape irrigation guidelines to adopt a twice a week limit. >> two times a week doesn't seem enough since i have a lot so i don't know you know especially in the summer when it's really hot, my plants would die. >> reporter: she says the restrictions would hurt her efforts to feed her family. for homeowners and businesses with lawns nick says it's

entirely possible to keep a lawn healthy on reduced water. he explains how. >> turn on their sprinklers and let the water water the lawn until the point where it starts to run off and then turn it off for about 30 minutes to an hour to allow that water to sink down further into the soil and then turn it on again then they will get a lot deeper watering. they won't have to water it as frequently. >> reporter: another proposal would ban landscape watering within 48 hours of any measurable rainfall. california never imposed these restrictions before on a state-wide basis. not clear is how compliance will be enforced. a tougher burden on some communities. in sill von valley the average savings is 13%. >> this will get the message to people that you should only be watering two days a week at the most so we really think it will

help us get closer to our water savings goal. >> reporter: and as the drought continues, water customers will be facing possible rate hikes and more stringent measures. david louie, abc 7 news. president obama met with two top bay area school officials today as part of an effort to improve struggling incity schools. the super intent dent richard spoke with the president today at the white house about a the progress at the city schools and the new common core curriculum. >> the challenge that we face is that this is a monumental task and it requires resources. >> president obama believes adequate federal funding is key to improving troubled schools. hodge, a member of the school board was part of the meeting today which included school officials from all over the country. vice president joe biden says the federal budget has $41 million set aside to clear a

backlog of rape kits used to collect and preserve forensic evidence connected to a crime. there are 400,000 untested kids in the u.s. right now. the vice president toured a facility in maryland today where he said testing these kids needs to be a priority to bring closure to victims and justice. the i-team has investigated a rape kit backlog and found thousands of untested kids sitting on police shelves here in the bay area. in southern california police are trying to track down thieves who stole $200,000 in merchandise from a high-end optical store. the thieves broke through the front door of the store early saturday. they smashed display cases and grabbed the optical wear and designer glasses. the seven thieves ransacked the store and left a complete mess behind. we are following new developments into the hillary clinton e-mail controversy this afternoon. karen traverse is in washington now with more on plans by house

speaker john boehner to launch an investigation into clinton's e-mail while she was secretary of state. the continue versery over hillary clinton's e-mail activity is just not dying down. top house republicans tell abc news they expect speaker john boehner to announce a new investigation into clinton's e-mail practices when she was secretary of state including her admitted destruction of 30,000 e-mails that she says were purely personal. >> e-mails about planning chelsea's wedding or my mother's funeral arrangements, condolence notes to friends, as well as yoga routines. >> reporter: under state department rules, if an employee used a private e-mail account for official business the e-mail was to be turned over and entered into government computers but clinton didn't turnover any e-mails until 22 months after she left office. >> right now there is no way to know whether we have the state department communications that rightfully belong to the

american people. >> reporter: the white house said the state department acknowledged. >> they didn't have the system in place to automatically save the e-mails. >> reporter: and the state department is updating the systems to make that happen. but a key question as hilary readyies for a presidential run, does this matter to voters? in the polls since the controversy began, 17% say they are following the story closely and still has one of the highest approval ratings among all likely candidates. 50%. this new investigation means it's likely hillary clinton will be asked to testify twice before congress. once about her e-mails and a second time about the benghazi attack. karen traverse, abc news washington. vladimir putin appeared for the first time in ten days. putin met with the president, he looked healthy and relaxed quieting the rumor of absence.

some weekend visitors to san francisco are facing citations tonight. >> after the national park service says they and others left behind piesles and piles of trash. >> what a mess. >> reporter: yeah, what a mess. i've been talking to quite a few residents who tell me that unfortunately, they are seeing these large unruly crowds more and more often. they hope people come out and enjoy the beautiful green spaces. they just want those people to clean up after themselves. this is a photo provided of the crowd saturday.
