and that breaking news is taking place in the east bay. good afternoon everyone. i'm larry diehl. >> and i'm anna bey. police are searching for a gunman near a high school. authorities have set up a perimeter in the neighborhood near el serito neighborhood. >> people confirmed that shots were fired nearby but off campus. we have a picture that a neighbor in the lockdown area sent us. this is at a scene near the school. authorities have not said who they are looking for or perhaps if multiple people may have been involved but there are police

cars at various intersections. they've cordoned off the area looking for a house to house search and yard to yard search. stay tuned with us. two gang members are under indictment this afternoon following a wide 1/2-ranging bust that includes the seizure of guns and drugs. >> reporter: they call this area red october. as you can tell from the name, it was revealed back in october. officers are still going after six others at large. the investigation has provided local, state and federal agencies with key details how san jose street gangs are controlled by high-ranking so-called generals of la familia who are in prison. >> when an inmate is leaving prison, he will leave with

directives that he smuggled in his body cavity, often recrectally to bring to the streets and tell people to do certain things. >> directives are known as kites. the street gangs were told to do drug deals and kill people. they also had access to code keys. >> we had a source assisting us in recording phone calls and coordinating controlled buys of methamphetamine. and what the task force afforded under the circumstances, us, we were able to take down 24 members off the streets. >> six were still at large. each had nicknames like pistol and bam-bam. they were in a high wave of crime. they made money by selling two

pounds of methamphetamine a week. they got money they received from protection from the gangs. >> so they're acquiring money from felonies and taxation and monthly dues and all of that gets funneled up the chain to prison. >> law enforcement agencies hope this will put a dent on drug sales and on gang activity in san jose. the trial begins on april 13 in santa clara county superior court. in san jose, david louie. a san francisco judge says he'll consider a move of venue in an effort to move a sexual predator out of a neighborhood. 70-year-old howard christian was placed in a home in january. that situation angered neighbors as well as costa contra county and they complained they were not properly notified of this move which was ordered by the district court. they asked a contra costa county judge to hear those arguments

and that is set for tuesday. a man's body in this school's swimming pool was found at the start of the kids' p.e. class this morning. the principal at piedmont high school said he made the decision to clear the school because it wasn't clear how long the man would be on-site. it's not clear if it was an accident, or something intentional, but they say he was not a student orñi staff member there. the pool was last used last night during swim class. yesterday after a murder-suicide at the palo alto senior center. a man was found shot to death in the thesenior apartments yesterday afternoon. one man in his 60s appeared to die from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the man appears to be in shock. >> he is good man and he is

american. i can't think that he can kill somebody. >> palo alto police say violent crimes at senior centers are extremely unusual. this is their first homicide of the year. oakland police is investigating an accident this morning involving a city maintenance truck and a pedestrian. the truck hit the man walking across the street around 10:30. the man was conscious after the accident and was taken to the hospital for treatment. the driver was cooperating with investigators. two men now in custody in connection with an overnight shooting near petaluma this morning. authorities received a call about 3:45 about a man with gunshot wounds who was asking a 7-eleven clerk directions to the hospital. two hours later police arrested a pengrove man for assault with a deadly weapon. the shooting victim is expected to recover. a happy ending for a family

of four after they spent a night loss in yosemite. >> we have a picture of rescuers with the family and their car on a dirt road. it's an area in the national park known as chinchilla mountain. the four adults contacted the mariposa sheriff's office just after thursday night and they were asking for help. the family spoke very little english, but told deputies they drove out of stockton for about six hours before they ended up lost on some dirt road at the end of the forest. reports say rescuers from several different agencies were able to track them down on their gps to that area and they were found yesterday at 3:15 in the area in good spirits. another big drop in california's unemployment rate fell again last month dropping to 7.62%. that's the lowest rate since june of 2008. california has added 1 million new jobs since 2010. here in the bay area, we added

breaking news from el serito. someone appears to be in handcuffs now. this is a live look. >> they appear to have a gunman from el serito high school. the superintendent said they did hear gunshots but it was off campus, and police have been going yard to yard, house to house. at the top a few moments ago someone in handcuffs. we don't know exactly how he relates to this situation,

whether he's a suspect or somebody just wandering around the police want to further check out. >> we'll keep an eye on this and you can always find the latest on twitter and here on abc 7 news. in other news, the u.s. is making claims the islamic terrorist group isis was behind a bunch of suicide bombs in yemen that left 135 people dead and many injured. five suicide bombers carried out the operations at two mosques in the capital city of sinad during midday prayers today. officers are investigating whether isis really has the structure to enable these sort of attacks. rapper shug knight collapsed in court today after the judge set his bail at $250,000. he knocked his head on the chair going down and lost consciousness.

the 49-year-old is being charged with murder and attempted murder following a hit and run that killed a man in southern california in january. if convicted, knight could face life in prison. the problems may just be beginning for an illinois congressman resigning from office later this month. sources say the fbi is now looking into republican aaron schock's use of official campaign resources. tuesday schock announced he would step down march 31 over questions of how he used campaigns funds. the 33-year-old was a rising star in the republican party who had a penchant for documenting his luxury travels on social media. federal safety regulators are fining car seat maker $300 for failing to recall the seat

and we want to continue to update the breaking news in el serito. sky 7 live over el serito high school. a police search is going on in the neighborhood and police confirmed they are investigating a shooting near the school's campus and they say the victim appears to be in stable condition. authorities have detained at least one person, and police believe there still may be a suspect hiding in surt roundthe surrounding neighborhood. >> as a result, the police have cord onned off an eight-block area around the school.

alan is on the phone with new developments. what can you tell us about what you're seeing now? >> reporter: i'm standing at the corner of lincoln and ashbury. that is right in front of the school gymnasium. parents are telling me that's exactly where the shooting took place. no official word from police at this time but a security guard told me they are still in lockdown mode. no students can leave the school. i see a lot of parents waiting in cars along the street waiting to pick up their kids. i was talking to one mother named roshita cannon who was out here. you spoke to your daughter on the phone? what did she tell you? >> i came here to meet her. i was on my way from picking up my son, and we've basically just been waiting for about 35 to 45 minutes. we received a phone call from the school about 3:0, 4:00-ish

although it is the first day of spring, winter is still in full swing on the east coast. people in cedric, maryland woke up today to a spring snowstorm. philadelphia and new york city also planned on several inches of new snow today. new york city hasn't seen more than three inches of snow on the first day of spring since 1958. rural areas of new york and pennsylvania could see as much as 6 inches by the end of the day. >> it has been a brutal winter back east. they keep getting blasted and we would love to have their snowpack. if we could just have their snow. >> could we ship it out here and dump it in the sierra? not happening. a few crowdslouds around and may produce a sprinkle or two overnight. let's take a look at this winter storm which is still producing snow from new york to boston and

just days after word got out of plans to launch a low-cost transatlantic flight, ryanair said it's not going to happen. the city has not approved any transatlantic project and does not intend to do so, at least for now. they claimed the bargain carrier was planning to offer service between europe and the u.s. -- get this -- as low as $15. the airline ceo says the report was not true, but because tuesday was saiptt. patrick's day, no one was around to retract it. potatoes that won't bruise and apples that won't brown. it's a step closer to grocery store aisles today. the food and drug administration approved them as safe, saying they're as safe as their conventional counterparts. they sell two kinds of apples

this filtration system. >> in the room the air is very pure and clean. >> the machine also adjusts the level of oxygen to simulate different altitudes. pleasanton is about 350 feet above sea level, but people in the airport room feel as though it's a mile high. the lower level of oxygen means your body has to work a lot harder. >> at first it was very very difficult. i felt very light-headed. the second time i went, i felt like i was going to be sick to my stomach, and the last time i felt like i did everything. >> now it was my turn. but instead of a mile high they set the room at almost double that. we're doing interval training combining short bursts of high intensity with periods of lighter activity. a monitor is strapped to my chest. it transmits information to the computer -- >> so we know exactly how hard you're pushing so you can't trick it. 93% right now.

about 500 bay area high school students are set to make a difference this summer and travel to latin america where they will participate in service programs. >> leanne melendez tells us why this program is so different. leanne? >> reporter: it is different because these are kids from

underprivileged communities that could never afford to travel there just to volunteer. everything is paid for and they come back with the leadership skills to change their communities here at home. lakai gymwright is probably one of the most underprivileged students here. last summer he spent two weeks traveling to help a poor community. >> the travel is not a luxury, but it provides you with new eyes to look at your own life and your opportunities. >> reporter: because of private donations, global glimpse is able to take students from underserved communities in the bay area to i ammpoverished areas like nicaragua. they went to visit students in

nicaragua. >> we painted murals and put them in the classrooms. they were lacking resources and their building wasn't in good condition. >> having an opportunity to be able to see how people outside my comfort zone experience and live day-to-day life. >> reporter: since it started in 2007, global glimpse has taken 1900 students to latin america. the hope is that they come home to become civic leaders in their own communities. jose luciano from east san francisco bay is a good example. >> it was his first time out of the country first time getting a passport. since then he's lived in london, he's travel to countries across europe, he did an internship with the state department, and now he's working in politics in east san jose. >> i like to give back to my community, so that's one thing i kind of learned when we were out there, how to give back to our community. >> this summer they are taking 509 students from 40 bay area high schools.
