[ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> jimmy: thank you. howdy. how are you doing? thank you very much. thank you for joining us here at the long center in austin, texas. that's very nice of you. well, that is greatly appreciated. i don't want to leave either but i have to leave because if i stay any longer my body will turn into brisket. and i will have no choice but to eat myself. i really do have to go home. none of my clothes fit anymore. my socks are even tight. that's when you know. i had to buy a new suit.

my head is so fat i had to put a hat on it. when we get back to l.a. i'm going directly to zumba without hesitation. i'm going to miss being here, i'm going to miss all of you, i really am. [ cheers and applause ] you know what i have to say? i kind of feel like you guys should stop having fun when we leave. i don't like the idea of it going on without me. but we're not done yet. we're closing things out tonight in a big texas way with the great and powerful willie nelson who is with us. [ cheers and applause ] if any of you are still selling girl scout cookies this could be your lucky night. last night bill murray was here, which was just great, unbelievable. all the funny things you hear about bill murray are true. he's just funny all the time. bill was talking about how

important it when is you're out drinking to drink water. he feels very strongly that you should have one glass of water for every drink you have. so after the show we went out to see some live music. we went to see a rapper called early spreadshirt who bill kept referring to as sweatshirt joe. when we got there, mr. sweatshirt was nowhere to be found. but there was a rap group on, somewhere in the neighborhood, i think 175 people on stage. there were more people on stage than in the audience. not one of them was playing an instrument. so we stayed for a while. and there was no earl sweatshirt. . we went to another place. the police had shut the music down. we went to another place and we saw a band called waves. and it seemed like they were good but it was hard to tell because we got there toward the end of their last song. we left there and went to another place. went to like 19 places. and somehow, bill murray found water everywhere we went.

he was not kidding about the water. every drink we got was accompanied by a bottle or glass of water. at one point he went to the bar and came back with a round. he put it down, i thought it was vodka, it was water. end of the night i am beat, i'm ready to go, we get in the car, my wife and i were about to pull away. all of a sudden there's banging on the side of the car. we rolled the window down. and there's bill murray with two bottles of water in his hands. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] this is true, i'm not making one bit of this up. he goes, sparkling and flat. and throws them in the car and disappears into the night. and by the way, look what happened. bill murray told us we need water, all of a sudden it's pouring rain here. like we spent the night with a wizard. i should mention that, all this eating and drinking we've been doing for a good cause. or at least guillermo has. beginning of the week we weighed

guillermo. the moment he stepped off the plane from l.a., i weighed him. he clocked in at 192.4 pounds. and for every pound guillermo gained this week we're donating $2,000 to a local austin charity called urban roots. [ cheers and applause ] it's an organization that helps people, young people, with food and farming. now it is time for the moment of truth. ladies and gentlemen, please look to the skies. i give you guillermo, guillermo! [ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> jimmy: how did you know that's what i needed? >> well, because it's south by southwest. i don't wear every one of these bracelets for any other reason. >> jimmy: wow, you must be rich, you've got all those bracelets. >> for the tradition, cut them off and let them fall where they may and walk away and go on with your life. >> jimmy: that's what the sanitation people like to hear. let's move that because it's blocking the beautiful view of my face. you're staying out late, having fun? >> having a blast. going out, a couple of screenings of my movie, also seeing a lot of bands. i saw edward sharpe last night. [ cheers and applause ] >> it was amazing. they played their new album.

it was really sort of a great, special, intimate evening which was really a great start because the next act i saw was absolutely insane. jeff the brotherhood. >> jimmy: i know that band, yeah. >> and they were -- i wanted to do like a great juxtaposition. that's one of the thins i love about south by is you can see completely different artists play. and so there was the nice edward sharpe show, everyone was smalling and happy, amazing show. then jeff the brotherhood was like tons of people onstage and people crowd surfing and dancing and banging heads. i captured photos of both shows for like the juxtaposition. right when i was taking the photo of werehood and doing the dance of i've got my beer in one hand and the camera. and i take a photo. and then i'm sort of like holding it and doing like the thing of like, hey, i'm at the brotherhood. put it in my pocket.

two seconds later, someone threw a cassette tape from the stage. and it hit my beer perfectly. they're like, that man doesn't need that beer, he needs this cassette tape! the beer just fell. >> jimmy: oh my god, it died? >> it died. it was a brand-new beer. i just started laughing. the timing of it. >> jimmy: and they're out of beer in austin, too. >> yeah, i know. here's the cassette tape. >> jimmy: oh, all right, thank you. [ cheers and applause ] i haven't seen one of these in a long time. >> there you go. >> jimmy: you had your bachelor party in austin. >> i did, i love it here. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: i have a policy when it comes to bachelor parties that nobody's allowed to take pictures. >> but here's the deal. so i was shooting up in dallas, texas. [ cheers and applause ] you've heard of it. and i was shooting a tv show up there. and i had friends from new york. i had friends from l.a.

they were going to come to austin and we were going to meet in the middle. and i told the like scheduler of the show, look, i got guys coming in from both coasts, as we like to say in show business. and you need to give me this friday off. because all my friends -- >> jimmy: a bachelor party. >> a lot of them don't know each other and i'm the glue that keeps everyone together. he said, yeah, sure, no problem. of course i end up getting booked for a night shoot on that friday night. so i missed the first night of my batch already party. bachelor party. but i've got a really great best man who's also the producer on my movie. and he called me wife and said, i need photos of your soon to be husband in various -- various stages of drunkenness. he got a blow-up doll, put the pictures on, and went around austin. >> jimmy: so this is the beginning of the evening, i presume.

>> that's my friend rashad. and that is me. very excited for my bachelor party. . they were texting me these as i was working, by the way. there's me. having a beverage. not a water. >> jimmy: there you are. >> that's me after having a few too many beverages. >> jimmy: then finally. >> that's the end of the night. >> jimmy: yeah. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: clever friends. >> it's not really me. the only reason yes feel comfortable showing that on national tv is those pictures are not me. >> jimmy: yet they are you in a way. they also are you. >> i would have been like that i'm sure. >> jimmy: i think your documentary was great. >> thank you. >> jimmy: i personally am a guy, when i was in college, i spent a good five, six hours a week in tower records in tempe, arizona. scouring, looking for records.

and you made a documentary. i didn't know any of this stuff about tower records. >> good. >> jimmy: explain the basic idea. >> so basically i'm from sacramento, which is where tower was originated. and tower, the founder of tower, russ solomon, amazing character. he started selling used 78s out of his father's drugstore in 1939. >> jimmy: tower drugstore? >> yes. the tower drugstore. and eventually it evolved into opening the first tower records in 1960. by the time they went bankrupt in 2006, they had over 192 stores around the world. and so when i found out about that drugstore, because coming from sacramento, tower's a point of civic pride. but i didn't know much about its history. when i found out about that drugstore, i instantly just went, well, that sounds like a documentary. if it starts there and ends there and it involves the music industry, i'm sure there are a lot of really great stories. >> you have all these people, elton john, bruce springsteen,

dave grohl, talking about what tower meant to them. dave grohl worked at a tower records store. >> he worked at tower records in virginia. >> jimmy: elton john would go in all the time. >> elton, they would open the store early for elton. he would have his limo driver carry a box, elton had a list of records and he'd buy three, one for each one of his houses. he did that for decades. >> those are great. just going through the record store. now we get everything so easily. it's not the same. i know we romanticize everything, but -- >> it's like the way i look at it, i don't remember -- when i look at a certain album i don't remember, i remember where i was when i downloaded that, it was so great. know what i mean? >> jimmy: i was at home. >> i was at home in my underwear. great, oh, and then i just danced the night away. so for me, it's something about record stores and going and that physical interaction, that personal connection. but then also tower itself, it was such an amazing company. there were people that worked at

tower. they started at clerks. they worked there for 30 years. ended up basically the highest of the food chain there within the company. there were people that spent a huge chunk of their life there. >> jimmy: i was one of them. >> and then when they went bankrupt, they all had to fire each other. so it's really a very human story. it's really not so much a documentary about the music industry so much as it is about this misfit family that came together and took over the world and had a lot of fun doing it. >> jimmy: it's excellent. especially if you're into that sort of thing. it's called? >> "all things must pass." >> jimmy: colin hanks, everybody. thank you, colin. be right back with edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros!
