half moon bay pacifica around the golden gate bridge. otherwise we are milder this morning with 06 in hayward, 48 santa rosa, 52 in san jose and opercele weak fronts coming our way. with the cloud cover it has insulated us. with the fog we are much milder this morning. but by the afternoon we will be cooler. here's a look at the next several hours. starting out with the clouds. that weak front sits off the coast, and you will see by 9:00 still some cloud cover. 11:00 looking at partly to mostly sunny conditions. and by the afternoon the cloud cover is banked up along the shoreline. 60s for san francisco. the north bay. but milder 70s inland. that will bring the temperatures down a few degrees today and more so tomorrow. we will talk about that better chance of rain and the cooler second half of your weekend coming up, chris. >> thank you. >> a former san francisco firefighters will not face drunk driving charges after a crash

this killed a motorcyclist. this comes after a judge stunned prosecutors. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana explains the latest turn. >> this is a graphic video of the crash. he has the green light and the fire truck has emergency lights and sirens on but doesn't slow down to make sure intersection is clear. the 32-foot ladder truck slams into him. he flies into the hydrant. i talked with his attorney by phone. >> i'm extremely disappointed and angry. >> jeff is a lawyer who specializes in motorcycle accident cases. he's currently suing the city of san francisco and michael quinn, who has since quit the fire department. quinn had been facing felony dui charges, but there was problems with the evidence. the judge dismissed breathalyzer tests given by his fellow firefighters after the crash because their equipment was not properly calibrated.

and that meant police officers had no probable cause to arrest quinn and administrator a blood test which itself was not useful in this case because blood was not drawn until six hours after the crash. fraser's attorney quickly questioned why quinn didn't face different charges. >> they never charged him with felony hit-and-run, which to me was a slam-dunk. >> after the horrific crash witness ness told our i-team that the bar and pub has surveillance of quinn being given lots of water inside the business, possibly by fellow firefighters. he didn't return to talk to san francisco police for two hours. the san francisco district attorney's office issued a statement we disagree with the decision and are exploring all appellate options. quinn had been out on bail and walked out a free man. abc7 news. the bicyclist who was robbed after being hit by a truck in west oakland two months ago is out of a coma and speaking.

25-year-old greg lowry suffered severe head trauma and has been comatose since the accident happened on january 13th. he emerged from the coma three weeks ago and thursday began again. these photos show him awake with his mother. the story attracted widespread attention when he was pickpocketed while lying in the street critically injured. the 80-year-old driver who hit him was also robbed. no arrests have been made. an uber driver was beaten and robbed in the richmond district this week. he was standing outside his car early wednesday morning at 10th and gearry. he was surrounded by four men, one of them punched the driver in the face. the men stole his toyota and crashed it a block away. the suspect who hit the driver was later arrested while waiting for another uber ride.

two additional suspects have also been arrested. >> campbell police believe a man who was drunk as he hit and killed their own step-daughter in the driveway. he is now under arrest as the family mourns the loss of a woman who would have been celebrating her 42nd birthday. >> i keep thinking i will wake up and it's a nightmare. >> she is not only reeling from the death of her daughter. she's forced to see it over and over again in her mind because she witnessed it. >> i was right there where i saw her face. it was like, dad, what are you doing? it just haunts me. >> francis said her husband, phillip, had been drinking all day when he left to go to a liquor store around the corner. when he got home just before 5:00 thursday evening, leslie was in the driveway trying to guide him into a parking spot. the family said he hit the gas instead of the brake and ran over leslie. she died on the driveway at the hands of the man who raised her. >> he never intended to do it, but it can't be taken back. i lost my daughter.

>> campbell police say he was drunk. they arrested him on suspicion of second degree murder. >> based on the investigation and his statements, it became very apparent he understood the potential consequences of driving drunk. >> the only reason i'm doing this if someone thinks they can have one or two beers and drive down the street and pull into their driveway without any consequence, think again. think again. >> her family is now planning a funeral instead of a birthday party. >> in campbell, katie marzullo abc7 news. an east bay school on lock down following a shooting. one person shot at el cerrito high school. we have the story. >> out of nowhere we heard the pow, pow, pow. the shots went off. >> it happened just as classes let out at el cerrito high. police say a 19-year-old man was shot twice at the corner of

lincoln and ashbury avenue right in front of the school. this man heard the police responding. >> he said i smell gunpowderrer and see blood everywhere and i got more and more scared. and i said, okay we are on lock-down. >> two high school students were there when the gunfire erupted. both were detained for questioning. >> they are in a position to give us information about exactly what did occur because our victim has been unwilling to provide us information as to how this altercation started. >> the victim refused aid and took himself to the hospital where police followed up with him. they are also looking for two to four other young men believed to be involved. nervous kids were reunited with their kids. that was around 5:00. abc7 news. police in palo alto are working to find a motive this morning into an apparent

murder-suicide at a senior apartment complex. the victims have not been identified. but police said a man in his 60 was found shot had to death. and another man in his 60s was found in the elevators. he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound. police said they both lived in the low income senior apartments, and neighbors say one of the men was the manager. palo alto police say crimes in this complex are highly unusual. 6:07 the time. a shocking discovery at a south bay high school after students found a body in an outdoor swimming pool. this morning investigators still trying to figure out what happened. >> in east san jose, a community in disbelief at piedmont hills high school. >> the first thing that went through my head was, was it a murder, was it an accident? that's what i was wondering. >> many students with lots of questions after a body was discovered on campus. >> as students and staff were taking off the pool covers, a body was found at the bottom of the deep end of the diving pool. >> san jose police responded

just before 9:00. the superintendent of the east side union high school district tells abc7 news the pool is locked up after swim practice, and before second period physical education classes came in -- >> it was an intentional effort for someone to climb over the fence and get into the pool. >> a look from sky 7hd shows the scene below. first responders said the body was found fully clothed and weighted down. firefighters had to use specialized urban search and rescue equipment to raise the body of an adult male out of the water. they are trying to determine if it is suspicious in nature. students puzzled by what they saw. >> it is very shocking. i was a little bit scared because i thought this would be a student that i knew. >> district leaders have confirmed it was not a student or staff member. kids were sent home early, but not before grief counselors were brought in to comfort. >> we didn't know how long it would take to come and remove

the body and do their investigation so we felt we wanted to give the police department, fire department and coonor's office plenty of time to do their work. >> big changes are coming from the eastern part of the bridge. this is a 1400-foot gap that widens a little bit everyday. most of the upper portion of the old bridge should be gone by 2018.

caltrans awarded a $69 million demolition contract to an engineering firm to take down most of the steal structure. once it's gone, it will allow for the extension of the pedestrian walkway and next year will connect treasure island with the east bay. i'm sure a lot of people are excited for that to happen. >> yes. >> and we are talking about spotty showers throughout the weekend. i'll pinpoint them for you when we return. >> lisa, thank you. also ahead, a major gang bust and how the gang members were taken down from behind the walls of prison. and plus some road closers in the east bay this weekend. the event that will bring thousands of

>> time is 6:13. we are looking out at pier9 from the roof cam. a slight breeze along the embarcadero. it's hard to see the bay bridge because of the fog. we will see how the temperatures are shaping up coming up in a little bit. authorities in brooklyn, new york say seven children are dead following an early morning house fire. it broke out around is 12:30 this morning eastern time. fire officials say the children who died are between the ages of 5 and 15 and are believed to be related. two others critically injured. 100 firefighters were called to respond. authorities say a malfunctioning hot plate may have started the fire. back home in the south bay hundreds of gang members are now

behind bars following major arrests in the south bay. the arrests reveal how gang members in prison were profiting from crime on the streets. we have the story. >> reporter: the crimes are appearing here in the streets of san jose, but the orders are coming from 400 miles to the north from behind the walls at pelican bay state prison. that's where three so-called generals of the nuestra familia gang were calling the shots. >> they went so far as to say this is how you do a killing this is how you do a robbery. and these were being directed from behind the walls of jail and prison. >> the directions were written in code and smuggled out in the body cavities of prisoners leaving on parole. known as kites the orders are found in possession of one of the top street gang members in san jose. >> we recovered hundreds of written communications that had really never been seen on this level and in this depth. it was so explicit that we have the three generals behind the walls at pelican bay in writing and with their signature on very specific gang directives that were in the possession of one of the arrested suspects.

>> the nuestra familia gang members each had nicknames such as pistol, monster and bam bam. six are still at large. there was an organized chain of command. drug task force steams seized drugs and guns and money during the arrests. the gangs were selling 2 pounds of methamphetamine a week worth thousands of dollars. proceeds and protection money made its way to the leadership behind bars. the multi-agency task force believe they have put a dent into gang activity in san jose after one decided to cooperate and reveal the gang workings. >> >> we had so many cooperatetors and source documents and history with this gang that we hopefully are deterring them from putting down a foothold in this city ever again. >> the gang members go on trial in san jose starting april 13th. in san jose, david louie, abc7 news. >> no questions asked. that's the promise this morning from one city leader and san francisco police as they will host a gun buy back in the

western addition. today's buy back will pay anyone $100. anyone turning in an assault weapon will receive $200. the event begins at 9:00 this morning at the community center on mcallister street. >> the world's youngest no east bay baseball peace prizewinner is coming to the silicon valley. malala will speak at the san jose event center on june 26th. in october, 2006 the taliban tried killing malala because she spoke out for education for girls in her nature i have pakistan. she's become a prominent human rights activist. >> napa valley winemakers and community leaders want to step plans to build a los angeles style indian casino. it happens to be in the very early stages. abc7 news reporter laura anthony tells us more.

>> reporter: this is what napa valley vendors want people to envision when they ponder a visit. not this. that's why the vintners, chamber of commerce, even the sierra club are banding together to send a message, this a tribal casino isn't their idea of a good fit for the napa valley. >> concerned about protecting the agriculture lands for agriculture. we are famous for the wine industry here but at the end of the day it's still agriculture and farming. >> they received an anonymous tip between the band and a las vegas developer to build a casino in one of three counties, serrano, sonoma or napa. >> they don't believe this is a good area for gambling. this is a quiet town. we cater to wine and small business. >> napa county supervisor says it is not about trying to

preserve an image, but rather it's primary designation as an agricultural preserve. >> so is there a scenario in napa valley where there could be a casino? >> i think that's a conversation people want to have but it needs to be done in an environment everyone understands, we have to have the same goals. >> the tribal leader told us they plan to build a casino in the north bay, the plans are very preliminary. however, the groups are going to put up $100,000 to head off the effort. laura anthony abc7 news. a traffic alert for you, oakland's big running event is this weekend. it will go from downtown of the oakland hills and a half-marathon course, as well. nearly 10,000 people will be running sunday. you can expect quite a few road closers throughout the morning. and it should be a pretty fun time and cooler temperatures tomorrow, which will make for good running weather. >> good to have a few sprinkles, as well. i don't know how they are going to feel about that. but, yeah we are certainly

looking at a bit of a pattern change as we check out live doppler 7hd, where there's plenty of low clouds and fog at the coast. and as a result, with the four-mile visibility, there are delays at sfo. up to 33 minutes. so maybe it's spring break, maybe you've got some outdoor plans this weekend. temperatures will be on the mild side. not as warm as they have been and not as sunny. we have seen some high and mid-level clouds the past couple of days. as we bow into the sierra nevada, i can't see much going on but we could see an inch of snow over the weekend. here's a look at sfo right now. you see the low cloud cover. it's 57 across the bay in oakland. good morning san jose, 52 for you. half moon bay 55 degrees. we are starting out milder thanks to all of this the low clouds. but the afternoon will be cooler and we will call it partly to mostly cloudy. 48 santa rosa rowsa, 54 livermore. a couple opportunities for rain. a system offshore will allow for

maybe a few sprinkles around the bay today. a better chance comes our way tomorrow. so the coastal fog and some sprinkles. that's what you are waking up to. for the rest of the weekend we will have an even cooler day for your sunday and a better chance of showers towards the afternoon and evening hours. even into your monday morning commute. looking at the short term, we are cooler and cloudier, and into the middle of next week, yes, we are warmer. in fact, we are talking near 80. here's a look at our pacific satellite picture. two fronts to speak of. here's the first one, a weaker one. this is providing perhaps the sprinkles and the cooler temperatures are pushing through. we are looking at in between systems between later on today and tomorrow. that will allow for a partly cloudy sky and temperatures maybe up into the low 70s. but by tomorrow, as the system pushes on through, we could see maybe a couple hundredth a

tenning, .2, and basically in the north bay around sonoma county. that's where the best chance of showers will be. >> here are the clouds down to half moon bay and pacifica. into the second half of your weekend, sunday, we are looking at more clouds. this is sunday late in the day. dinnertime we could see maybe a few showers cloverdale. doesn't mean they will happen here. they could pop up and be anywhere right on through monday. 6:00 maybe some peninsula or east bay shower activity. between now and monday morning looking at light amounts. fair from a tenth to .2 here. you see the light blue and the rest of the bayless than a tenth of an inch. it is spring. we could expect spring showers but it's been unusual this winter and notice with the temperatures cooler sunday, monday, that's where we are looking at the front. and then look what happens. we are talking about much warmer conditions next week. 69 oakland and look for low

>> vehicle technology company delphi wants to prove a driver less car can go the distance. it will leave san francisco tomorrow ask drive itself across the country to new york city. three human engineers will ride inside ready to take the wheel if anything goes wrong. david louie went inside one of the driverless cars at the company's headquarters in mountain view. this consider has sensors so it can talk to other cars and slow down and speed up. time is 6:25. monday is national puppy day and abc7 news will host a big adoption event that morning. we are getting into the spirit with photos sent in by many of

57 in oakland, and 55 half moon bay. that's due to all the cloud cover. milder start, cloudy conditions. by the afternoon we are on the flip side with a cooler afternoon. and we still will have the cloud cover. partly to mostly cloudy. it thins out somewhat today. today being the milder day of the weekend. but we could see some sprinkles around the bay today. we are looking at the chance of showers lingering into the second half. in fact, chance of showers gets better through tomorrow. i'll explain coming up. chris. >> thank you. developing news. at least two people are dead after a fire brokeout inside an apartment building in oakland this morning. the fire started inside a large building this used to be a warehouse on 24th street. that's next to interstate 980. take a look at the images just into our newsroom. flames quickly spread to a nearby building around 3:40 this afternoon. officials say the fire forced

more than 30 people from their homes. arson investigators are now on the scene and they want to find out how the fire started. 6:31 is our time. >> president obama urged the senate to take action on his pick to be the next attorney general. the president nominated loretta lynch to replace eric holder last fall. mr. obama singled out republican leaders in his weekly video address which came out this morning. >> it has been more than four months since i nominated loretta lynch to serve as attorney general. this time republican leaders in congress won't even let her nomination come up for a vote. in fact by monday, loretta will be languishing on the senate floor longer than the seven previous attorney general combined >> mitch mcconnell is holding up the vote until lawmakers can agree on a bill to combat human trafficking. the bill is stalled on party lines over abortion funding. the oakland city council has

signed off on a new exclusive negotiating agreement to move forward on the coliseum project. almeda county supervisors will look at the plan on tuesday. if that panel approves particular the current developer would have until august to work out a long-term deal. community activists will hold a prayer service and walk tonight to mark the shooting of a man by san francisco police. alex died after officers confronted him while responding to a call about a man with a gun in bernal heights park. police say he pointed a taser at the officers. prosecutors have yet to file criminal charges against the prosecutors. the shooting death has set off a series of protests over the past year. tonight's activities will include a screening of the film amor for alex.

>> today marks a year since four officers were shot and killed by a parole lee. they were shot and killed by 26-year-old man during a traffic stop. man barricaded himself inside an apartment and opened fired on s.w.a.t. team members sergeant irvin romance and dan. he was later killed in a shootout. the deadly shooting was the first time four officers had been killed on the same day in california since 1970. >> a san francisco woman tries everything to get her possessions back after her apartment was burglarized over the holidays. she has done a lot of digging but at every stop there are obstacles. vic lee has the story. >> i'm incredibly frustrated. i don't know what to do. >> it was christmas eve. a jolly time for all except kimberly. her apartment was burglarized while she was out of town. >> tv, laptops, electronics, jewelry, gifts.

>> the burglars stole $15,000 worth of her possessions. even this. >> toothpaste. >> toothpaste? >> yeah. >> the burglar climbed five floors on a scaffolding, came through a door on the roof and broke into her apartment. she called police. csi investigators were able to get a fingerprint off her front door mirror. they were able to match it to a prolific burglar, wanted for other burglaries but he's still on the loose. >> i feel terrible if others are getting burglarized by the similar person. >> she found someone was watching her stolen tv set. she has a netflix app with a saved password. >> all of a sudden my tv was back on line and they were watching movies on any netflix account. >> she captured a screen shot to track down where her stolen tv was.

she asked her carrier, at&t to give her that information. the answer, no, because of privacy laws. >> it was shocking to me. it's do i not have the right to go after my own property? it's stolen property, it belongs to me. >> she said the investigator told her they didn't have the resources to go after the tv. so she went to court to try to get a subpoena forcing at&t to give up the address. this came in the mail. motion denied. so kimberly knows who the burglar is. the trouble is he's still on the loose. she also knows that someone in san francisco is watching her tv set, but she doesn't know where he or she lives. so while she waits for good news, well, you know that old adage, justice delayed is justice denied. vic lee, abc7 news. >> governor jerry brown is pushing for employment for former convicts. he spoke with the idea at merit college in oakland yesterday. nearly 3,000 inmates have been but rolled from california prisons since prop 47 was

approved by voters last december. it reduces felonies to misdemeanor. it gives them a second chance at life the governor said and changes their lives >> and the world of people in prison changes and it can change for the better if they are working and they earn some respect. so this work i see is yes about public safety. >> governor brown had programs from the california industry authority that teaches inmates job skills help them earn degrees and provides mental health support. hundreds of bay area students are setting out to make a difference this summer by traveling to latin america. the positive educational experience will help them become leaders in their own communities. lyanne melendez spoke to some of the students.

>> reporter: they spent more than 2 weeks working at a school with disabled kids. to do so they traveled all the way to nicaragua. >> having an opportunity to see how people outside of my comfort zone, live day-to-day lives. >> we painted murals and put carpet in and tried to give it a brighter tone. it seemed like they were lacking a lot of resources and their building wasn't in good condition. >> it was all possible thanks to an oakland-based organization called global glimpse. >> they come back really with a sense of responsibility, of confidence because they have proven to themselves they can do something that they never thought was possible, of leadership. because of private donations global glimpse is able to take students from underserved communities in the bay area to impoverished areas of countries like ecuador and the dominican republic and nicaragua. since it started in 2007 they have taken 1900 students to latin america. the hope is they come home to be civic leaders in their own community.

>> they understand that everything they do here impacts the lives of people next door, people across the community, and people around the world. >> this man volunteered at a school in the dominican republic. encourages other oakland students to do the same. >> i like to give back to my community. that's one thing i learned out there, how we are giving back to their community. i brought it back here. >> this summer they will take 509 students from 40 bay area high schools. in oakland, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> the iconic embarcadero restaurant sinbads is expected to close for good today. the port of san francisco has ordered the restaurant to leave pier 2 to make way for a new ferry terminal. they said they were late paying rent and bounced checks. they have also issued warnings about food safety issues. something new has popped up near at&t park. it's a temporary new restaurant and retail center called "the yard."

cpa allen rosen says one of the most common errors concerns filing an extension. >> the tax is due whether or not you file an extension on april 15th. the extension gives you time to file your return, but the tax dollars are due. >> consumer reports said another big mistake, not filing at all bus you can't afford to pay your entire bill on tax day. >> no matter what, you have to file your tax return. usually you can set up an installment plan with the internal revenue service and avoid a stiff penalty, but you are still going to have to pay interest. >> you can find the forms on irs.gov by typing "installment" into the search box. another tax mistake, not claiming everything you are allowed. for instance, the federal tax credit for energy efficient upgrades to your home. if you made improvements that qualify, be sure to include those. and here's something regarding your parents you may not know. >> if you paid more than 50% of your parents' living expenses,

accuweather forecast. lisa, how much longer will it take before the cloud finally looks up? >> it's going to take couple of hours. maybe towards 10:00. we've seen the past few hours the clouds have lowered and it's gotten worse, the visibilities. still about five mile visibility a couple hours ago and now we are down to just over two miles at the airport. that's why we have delays at sfo and the sun coming up at 7:15. once we see the sun come up that will work on this cloud deck and we will begin to see the ceilings lift. but there will be more mid- and high-level clouds. although the visibility will increase, we still will have partly to mostly cloudy skies around the bay. here's the view from mt. tam. you see the marine layner the lower levels but we are looking at cooler conditions over the weekend. it is spring officially and that means springtime showers. hopefully a few in the forecast. good morning, san jose, 52. sutro was fogged in all morning but we managed this shot with

cupper 40s. some of the cooler locations. still fog by napa. by the delta you could see a shower over the weekend and better chances of rain coming our way by the second half of the weekend. still snot everyone will see it. what we do see will be spotty and light. emeryville with a lower deck of clouds a few sprinkles this morning. the first weak system will sit off show. the second system moves in tomorrow and into monday bringing the chance of showers around the bay. by the middle of next week we will get pretty warm with temperatures coming out here 80s in some locations. the pacific satellite, it's stalled on this image here. you see the front. the activity is mainly to the north of us around seattle. so we are getting the tail end of it that is providing the cloud cover. maybe showers but that will thin out throughout the afternoon today. we will still see 70s in the warmer locations. this is what is on top for the

second half of the weekend into monday. different forecast models bring different amounts of rain. we are look like being at light amounts but depending on which mod em, some could pick up .2 in the sonoma area. that's a possibility, as well as over a couple hundredth in parts of the east bay. we will call it spotty showers here and there. late tomorrow you notice we still have a chance of showers that takes us into monday. san leandro could see a shower up through cloverdale and we will lack for monday morning to offer a few sprinkles. this is one model that looks more aggressive with a tenth over in oakland and hayward. .05 by the delta. highs today statewide 80s in delta, 77 los angeles and 75 in sacramento. so it will be dry in san jose with more sun there. low 70s. 69 san mateo. mostly cloudy san francisco.

cal goes on to win 78-66. they will next play texas on sunday. the dodgers got a huge scare yesterday when pitching ace clayton kershaw got hit in the face by a line drive. it came against the a's. andy perino with the broken back liner hits the cy young award winner on the left side of his face. luckily he broke his back or it could have ban lot worse. kershaw only suffered a broken tooth and stayed in the contest. oakland rallied for two runs in the ninth to beat l.a. with two out the rpi single to left field. that brings in the game winner. the a's take it 3-2. meantime the giants played the reds. tim hudson looked good giving up just one hit in three 2/3 innings. struck out 4. san francisco blows a late three-run lead. tyler rogers gives up a two-run double to chris dominguez. and cincinnati scores five in the top of the ninth and wins 6-5. that is sports for a saturday morning. i'm rick quan. go out and have a great day!
