good morning, america. breaking overnight airport attack. a man wielding a machete taking swipes at tsa officers in new orleans. police opening fire to bring him down. >> everyone in the area as you can imagine started screaming. we all got down on the floor. >> panicked passengers running for safety. why did he do it? highway horror. a shocking case of road rage. a woman shot in the head by an angry driver. the search is on. >> one suv run off the road and shot at her. >> what she did next that may have saved her life. caught on camera. suge knight collapses in court. the former rap kingpin apparently getting sick at a bail hearing in his deadly hit-and-run case. what the judge told him right before he went down.

coming up in a moment. >> got a little bit of good news, i think. but we're going to start with the breaking just overnight. a bizarre and violent attack at the airport in new orleans. >> chaos as a man stormed a tsa checkpoint wielding a machete and wasp spray. that toxic aerosol designed to kill bugs. you can see the suspect in this picture right there on the ground with his machete right next to him. seven people were injured and abc's kendis gibson is at the airport for us this morning covering it all. kendis. >> reporter: dan and paula, you guys mentioned it. it was a scene of utter, complete chaos. take a look at this. i want to show you, you see that guy there in yellow, that's where the first tsa agent was attacked. i spoke with an eyewitness to all of this moments ago. he describes a scene of complete and utter panic with people running all over the place, women and children screaming and crying. overnight, chaos at a major airport. seven people, including a

machete-wielding man are injured this morning after an attacker stormed security officers at louis armstrong international airport in new orleans. >> some guy came through with a machete, apparently. >> reporter: the suspect 62-year-old richard white, terrifying travelers as he allegedly bombarded two agents with toxic wasp spray rushing through a presecurity checkpoint. >> this guy comes running with a machete over his head swinging it, and i start swinging my suitcase at him and he runs the other way right into a tsa agent. >> reporter: charging the security gate, the suspect was stopped by two more agents before he began swinging at them with the 14-inch-long blade. >> the male tsa officer grabbed a piece of luggage in order to defend himself. >> reporter: sheriff's deputies stationed at the airport opened fire shooting white three times to stop the rampage. >> and all of a sudden i just hear gunshots. i hear pop. >> reporter: travelers scrambling for cover in concourse b that serves southwest airlines. >> everyone in the area as you can imagine, started screaming. we all got down on the floor and

they opened the floors to the emergency jetways and they hustled everyone in there. >> reporter: three airline passengers among those injured in the fray. one traveler and a tsa agent suffering bullet wounds in the cross fire. all expected to survive. officials say the attacker in serious condition when taken to the hospital for surgery overnight. operations returning to normal as you can see here at the airport. in fact, you can't really tell if there's even increased security this morning. as for the suspect, he is identified as a person who lives just about a mile from this airport. the motive, not known this morning. dan. >> a lot of people who know him say they are very surprised by what has happened. kendis, thank you very much. for more on this, let's bring in the former fbi agent and abc news consultant brad garrett. brad, you used to be an fbi profiler. do you have any theories about why this may have happened? >> behavior initially, dan, he doesn't hurt the two tsa agents. he sprays them with insect spray and then runs through the metal

detector. again, has ample opportunity to stick a number of people including tsa agents, doesn't. keeps going and eventually chases a tsa agent and a uniformed officer shoots him for obvious reasons, so could one motive be suicide by cop? i think they're going to have to look at that. >> and in your view from what we know now, how did security handle this? well? >> i think fairly well, dan, because tsa is not armed. that's why you have uniformed local officers at every concourse. and she did what she was trained to do. >> all right, brad garrett, we appreciate your insight, as always. that's the abc news consultant brad garrett. paula, over to you. >> yes, it could have been a whole lot worse. dan, thank you. moving on to a shocking case of road rage in houston. the manhunt is on this morning trying to find the angry driver who shot a woman in the head. that woman somehow was able to pull over and call the cops for help, and abc's tai hernandez has the very latest on this case for us this morning.

good morning, tai. >> reporter: kim hafford went from driving to work to having bullet fragments removed from her skull at the hospital. the victim of a shocking incident of road rage. she says just because she honked at the other driver. this morning, police intensifying their search for the driver that shot 28-year-old kay hafford in the back of the head after a road rage altercation in houston turned violent. >> one suv ran off the road and shot at her. she's bleeding from the head. >> reporter: police say the suspect, a white male wearing a blue baseball cap and driving a white suv, pursued hafford friday morning when she honked at him for cutting her off as she was trying to merge onto the freeway. >> the guy that was driving the vehicle started taunting her, basically what developed into a road rage situation. >> she let him know by blowing the horn he shouldn't have cut her off. >> reporter: the suspect's behavior quickly escalated following an unsuccessful attempt to get her to pull over. >> the guy let his window down, of course, she didn't let her window down. so that's when he proceeded to

shoot her. >> reporter: hafford told police the driver of the white suv came around to the right side of her red sedan firing a single shot through the passenger side window critically injuring her before fleeing the scene. >> the victim was coherent enough to be able to steer her vehicle off the exit ramp where she stopped. she called 911. she was in and out of consciousness. >> reporter: this morning she's recovering in fair condition at the memorial hermann hospital in houston. the suspect remains at large and her family continues to be outraged at what they call a senseless act of violence. >> i'm truly, truly upset. nobody deserves that. nobody deserves that. >> it all happened so quickly that hafford didn't even realize she was bleeding or had been shot until she pulled over to call 911 and while thankfully we don't hear about this kind of story very often, a recent poll shows one in ten drivers feels uncontrollable anger toward another driver on the road. >> yes, anger management. what an unbelievable story that

she is lucky to be alive this morning. ta. i. thank you. >> she is very tough. tai, thank you. now to the new and serious trouble, very serious trouble for a once high-flying congressman. there he is, the former republican aaron schock showing off his abs on a magazine cover and here is his congressional office done up to look like the set of the pbs show "downton abbey." days after schock resigned in a campaign spending scandal, the feds are now stepping in to investigate his finances and abc's david wright is on the story. a strange one. >> reporter: he was an up and coming republican from peoria until he started styling himself like the earl of grantham with a six-pack. this has been a spectacular fall from grace, congressman schock resigned this week amid scandal and now he's the subject of an fbi investigation. schock horror. abc news has learned that staff members of former congressman aaron schock now face subpoenas to appear before a federal grand jury. >> the plot thickens. >> reporter: a plot line worthy

of "downton abbey," the show that inspired the decor of his capitol hill office. complete with pheasant feathers and crystal chandelier. >> at the end of the day regardless of what color wall you choose for your office the most important thing as a member of congress is what you do for your constituents. >> nothing succeeds like excess. >> reporter: when abc news first confronted the congressman about these excesses schock shook off his critics. >> you know as taylor swift said haters are going to hate. >> reporter: now he's facing more questions about his expenses, allegedly overestimating the mileage on his personal car by some 90,000 miles. schock has since repaid all of the reimbursements for work mileage during his congressional career. he's also under investigation for misusing campaign funds and taking improper donations. schock was one of the youngest members of congress. his six-pack featured on the

cover of fitness magazines, on instagram promoting himself surfing in hawaii, dancing the tango in buenos aires. >> far too old for that awful foxtrot. >> reporter: now schock is making less glamorous headlines. >> two years from now he will be successful if he's not in jail. >> reporter: we reached out to him but schock horror, he didn't get back to us. the dad says that the press is out to get him but now it's not just the press, it's the fbi too. >> the earl of grantham with a six-pack. well put. >> and whoever inherits the office also gets the decor. >> yes. >> it's staying. >> they'll probably do a paint job though. >> there you go. >> possibly. >> keep the pheasant feathers no matter what. david, thank you. let's get it over to ron now for a look at the other developing stories this morning. good morning, sir. >> hey, good morning to you, dan and paula. good morning, everyone. we begin with terrible news of a deadly fire right here in new york city that claimed the lives of seven children. the fire ripped through this home in brooklyn overnight. two other people are in critical condition. the children who died range in age from 5 to 15. they are believed to be members of the same family. more than 100 firefighters were called in to battle the blaze

which is being investigated. and white house officials are skeptical over isis claims of responsibility for the deadly attacks on two mosques in yemen. at least 137 people were killed. 250 injured after multiple suicide bombers hit two crowded mosques during midday prayers in the capital of sanaa. the white house press secretary saying often claims of responsibility are made for propaganda purposes. isis also claimed responsibility in wednesday's shooting rampage at a museum in tunisia that killed 22 people. some sad news now from our abc family. our dear friend and colleague reporter anchor lisa colagrossi died suddenly of a brain aneurysm overnight. she started here in new york soon after the 9/11 attacks. colleagues remember her as the ultimate pro, could go from tackling crime stories to financial news and lisa could also find humor even at the expense of herself. new yorkers came to know lisa's

authentic, steady and reassuring reporting. lease have colagrossi survived by her husband and two young sons. she was just 49 years old. >> she was one of the more authentic people you'd ever come across. >> great reporter and great mom. >> very nice woman. and the letter sent to the white house that was investigated for sigh side turned out to be saliva. it turns out the sender believed to be a homeless man from the chicago area who is apparently a heavy smoker which produces trace amounts of cyanide in his saliva. and finally, a 5-year-old lab is on the mend after being stranded on frozen lake erie for five days. the coast guard had tried for several days to rescue kimberly, that is the name of the dog, but ice kept breaking up and had to abandon that effort several times. one woman even tried to lure kimberly by grilling hot dogs on the lake shore. that did not work. >> lure him. >> finally on friday, a private airboat company was able to reach her.

she was reunited, kimberly, with her owners who say she is a bit cold and hungry. >> hope they had those hot dogs waiting for her. you could lure me with hot dogs, just about anything. >> happy ending, though. >> very cute. >> from a frozen lake. i'll remember that. >> next time you are stranded. >> next time i'm stranded. >> hopefully that will never happen. ron, thank you. now to the man who once was the most feared figure in all of hip-hop but here he is now, suge knight, a former rap powerhouse collapsing in court where he is facing a murder charge. the man who built an empire founding death row records now facing life in prison and abc's brandi hitt is on the story. >> reporter: former rap mogul marion "suge" knight unconscious in a los angeles courtroom collapsing head first onto a chair just moments after his bail was set at $25 million in a murder case. >> they lock him up in jail in solitary confinement. he can't get his diabetes medicine. he was dripping sweat like

someone threw a bucket of water on him. >> reporter: it's the fourth time knight has been taken by court by ambulance for the january hit-and-run death of terry carter. knight's attorneys claiming this surveillance video obtained by tmz shows he acted in self-defense, the hip-hop pioneer in his red truck approached by a group of men and allegedly attacked, knight then throwing the truck in reverse speeding off first wounding one man before running down carter. prosecutors on friday requesting knight's bail be set at $25 million. >> to be honest, i don't think any amount is enough for him. >> it's like she watches "empire" and comes in and says he's an unrepentant and shameless criminal. >> reporter: the fox show "empire" centers on a fictional hip-hop music company built on drug money by terrence howard's character. he too collapses during a moment of high stress. >> cookie! >> reporter: knight who

co-founded death row records in the '90s has prior convictions for assault with a gun and armed robbery and has spent time in prison. he's now facing four criminal counts in this case including murder and has pleaded not guilty. now i spoke to suge knight's attorney overnight. and he hasn't been able to contact his client to find out his condition. he did say, though, that knight's preliminary hearing scheduled for next month will go on as planned regardless of his health. paula. >> very bizarre physiological occurrence there, brandi. thank you. well, are you ready for the next round of heart-pounding action in what's already been one of the most thrilling starts to an ncaa tournament? the action begins again later today with almost all of our brackets taking a bruising, and we are very happy to welcome espn's "sportscenter" anchor lindsay czarniak with more on the magic of march. hi there, lindsay. >> hi there, paula. there were 16 games played yesterday. the first 15, not a single underdog won. no seed upset until the final game of the night.

wet, the shovels were out. take a look at the video from new jersey. hasbrouck heights. people had put away the shovels, had to bring them back out and the salt trucks were out and there were numerous accidents across the roadways. some of the totals across the area. freehold new jersey, 7.2. rocky point 7 inches. hagerstown, maryland, 5 1/2. philly, almost 4 and 4 1/2 inches in central park. normally we get two feet in new york city. we've seen 47 inches so far today. chicago, you're above average and, of course, boston seeing that record-breaking season over 100 inches there. all right, we've got some warming later on today even though it's snowing right now. get up to about 50 degrees so some of this will melt. but another cool front will be coming through the area and we'll be below average going through the first week of spring. flash flood watches out for texas today. we're looking at 2 to 4 inches potentially from austin all the way over towards atlanta as we go through time. if you want the heat, go to orlando, 90 degrees for the high temperature.

bodies, storing on his property and destroying. >> reporter: police also calling the arrest of 37-year-old owens a handyman who did jobs at the codds' home a major event in the case of zebb quinn, an 18-year-old last seen with owens before vanishing 15 years ago. >> the fact that he has been arrested on three counts of murder, that is a huge event in the zebb quinn case. >> reporter: quinn's family stunned by the arrest and speaking out in an exclusive interview with "good morning america." >> it breaks my heart that these other people had to die for some more information to come to light. >> reporter: despite owens being a primary suspect in quinn's disappearance, detectives were never able to find evidence needed to bring charges. quinn's heartbroken mother and sister now desperate for an end to their turmoil. >> my hope for zebb's case is that either jason talks or someone else who has information

going to be upside down, i'm not going to make it. he then took the garbage can and i knew we were going outside because i could hear the door open, i felt the cold. he started turning me around in circles and i thought is he just trying to disorient me, is he trying to make me dizzy? >> and it was about to get a whole lot worse for terry and doctors say they are just utterly amazed that she survived everything she went through. you can see the whole story, terry's whole story on "in an instant," that's tonight at 9:00 eastern right here on abc. >> a lot of other news breaking overnight. for that as always let's get it back to ron for another look at the morning headlines. good morning again. >> hi again, dan and paula, rachel. good morning, everyone. we begin with that terrifying scene overnight at the airport in new orleans. a man wielding a can of wasp spray and a machete attacked tsa workers near a security checkpoint. the suspect was shot by local police and is in the hospital.

seven people were injured including three tsa workers. walmart has agreed to a huge payout in the deadly crash, that deadly crash on a new jersey highway that severely injured comedian tracen morgan. the children of morgan's friend james mcnair will receive $10 million in a settlement. mcnair was killed when a walmart truck slammed into the limousine that he and morgan were riding in. and promising news in the fight against alzheimer's. in early testing, a new drug from the company biogen has shown a slow eded rate of mental decline in alzheimer's patients. it comes with several side effects including brain swelling. further testing is being done. and finally, a real-life ghost driver getting ready to cross the country, a cross country journey, that is. the self-driving audi, self-driving audi will set out from the golden gate bridge tomorrow on a road trip to new york city. it's loaded with sensors, computers and cameras that can read lanes, road signs and traffic lights. there will be a person, a real
