just thankful to be alive and made it out in time. >> a massive fire tore through a building in oakland. two people died. more than 30 others have to find a new place to live. i'm katie marzullo. we begin with developing news on the fire. lisa amin gulezian is live in west oakland. 0 do investigators know where the fire started? >> reporter: they're saying this started in the back of the building and also where according to neighbors mo thomas is a well-known multimedia artist lives. residents have been coming and going to try to grab what they can from the building before the

construction companies back to board this place up. the orange glow could be seen for miles. massive flames shot into the night sky as a beloved artist's work and living space burned. >> we ran, three of news our unit, we ran down the stairs and we grabbed our cat and fled. >> reporter: sleepy residents packed about little they could and watched as crews fought the fire. >> we had companies on the roof getting holes opened up. crews inside with nozzles. hitting the fire and then pulling down ceilings. >> before the smoke lifted in daylight arrived it was clear two people were dead. neighbors believe daniel mo thomas and his mail roommate died in their apartment. these are photos taken from inside thomas' destroyed second floor loft. investigators believe the fire started near the victim's bed.

amaintainer murder suicide at an apartment complex in palo alto. the coroner says the man shot to death what 70-year-old vincent collins. the gunman is identified as 69-year-old mark miller. the shooting happen inside a management office of this apartment building where both men lived. dozens of protesters gathered in san francisco today to say no to war on this 12th anniversary of the u.s. invasion of iraq. what started out as a vacation in paradise turned into a haunting moment for a kansas doctor who was bitten bay shark. ken gray went snorkeling with his two sons in hawai'i. he was standing in just about four feet of water when the ten to 1 foot tiger shark attacked. >> this shark was moving so quickly towards me that i didn't realize it would bite me until i saw my arm was just mangled. it just happened very quickly.
