more. rich moore. much sjsu. police shootings in two bay area cities. rich richmond police shot a man. we'll have more on the richmond shooting in just a moment, but first let's go to abc 7 news reporter live at the scene in vallejo. >> reporter: well, vallejo police investigators and investigators with the contra costa county district attorney's office have been out here for the evening, processing this scene. let's go ahead and show you some video of this scene after it all went down about 6:00 this evening. according to the vallejo police officers they were called to this strip mall parking lot regarding a man throwing beer bottles and waving a weapon,

when police units arrived the situation quickly escalated. they found a man standing next to a black dodge pickup truck holding a hunting knife. this is audio much the radio call leading up to the shooting. >> reporter: now, the sleep train store mentioned in that call is just a few yards away from where this all happened. there's also a target store here. this is a pretty busy shopping center especially on weekends. tonight we watched as crime scene investigators measure the area. and about an hour ago a mobile crime lab arrived to assist. police have not released any further details, including information about the man who was shot, and the extent of his injuries. it's also not yet clear if that

man did have a handgun. there has been some conflicting information as to whether he was armed with a handgun along with that knife that they initially saw. we are also waiting to find out how many officers fired at today's shooting. we are told the vallejo police department will have more information on this shooting very soon. abc 7 news. in richmond police shot a suspect following a traffic stop and chase. it happened at 25th street and roosevelt avenue just after 7:00 tonight. police say the driver didn't stop for the officer, kept going. the suspect then got out of the car and started to run. the officer noticed he was armed and the two exchanged gunfire. the suspect was taken into custody. his injuries are not life-threatening. the officer was not hit. the police are still trying to piece together how a suspect

and victim knew each other. they've arrested 40-year-old christopher mcnat. they believe he killed ronald sobado stuffed his body in a plastic barrel and let the barrels on the steps of city hall last night. >> i'm just shocked. there's no reason for this. i mean, he was not a violent person. i'm trying to catch my breath. it seems so surreal right now. >> the investigation led authorities to the mobile home park on highway 12 in sonoma valley. deputies have determined he was killed in one of the mobile homes. mcnat is being held in county jail without bail. he's scheduled to make his first court appearance tuesday. investigators are searching for the cause of a fire in oakland that killed two people and left dozens without their homes. the fire broke out at a six-unit apartment building on 24th

overnight. this is really an unsettled pattern through monday. after that, that march warmth is making a return midweek. we'll time out the rain in the seven-day forecast in just a minute. developing news in the north bay. one hiker is dead, another seriously hurt after falling off a cliff. it happened at arch rock in the point reyes national seashore this afternoon. a helicopter air lifted the survivor to santa rosa memorial hospital with life-threatening injuries. there is warning of the dangers there, and witnesses say there were different signs right before the hikers fell. >> we heard something collapse. and we saw the dust. these women said, be careful. there were rocks falling. >> this isn't the first time someone has fallen at arc rock. just last month a man from gilroy plunged 60 feet onto the rocks. chp officers rescued him. he survived but had major

injuries. reminders from the san francisco fire department for the people walking along the cliffs to heed warning signs after rescuing two 22-year-old hikers and their puppies in the lake shore neighborhood around 6:00 tonight. >> when you come out to the beach areas heed the signs. don't go over cliffs. watch your footing. keep your dog on a leash. >> firefighters say the woman got a few scrapes but neither hiker suffered serious injuries. new orleans mayor says a review of security procedures will be done at the airport after a machete wielding man tried to attack security personnel and passengers. that man died at the hospital today. abc news reporter candice gibson has more from new orleans. >> reporter: panic at airport security. >> some guy came through with a machete apparently. >> reporter: waiting for help and a bloody machete lying on the ground. >> people screaming and running

and hitting the floor. >> reporter: this is the suspect, 62-year-old richard white. he stormed into the terminal at louis armstrong airport. >> i started swinging my suitcase at him. he runs the other way right into a tsa agent. >> reporter: that's when a sheriff's deputy opened fire. >> i heard a pow! >> reporter: three of the bullets hit white. one strikes carol rochelle who was running ahead of him yelling to passengers to get to safety. she showed off her wound and talked about the deputy who took action. >> i have to say the officer is my hero. she saved my life. the man was within inches of whacking me with a machete. >> reporter: investigators on scene found evidence that the attack could have been worse. in his car smoke bombs and tanks of oxygen and freon gas. the bomb squad called in to check out the bag dropped at security, leaking a mysterious

liquid. >> half pint mason jars with cloth wicks into a liquid that we now know to be gasoline. which you would commonly refer to as a molotov cocktail. >> reporter: while the motive remains a mystery, white's family is cooperating with authorities and said mental illness is a factor. a san francisco judge ruled today a venture capitalist can seek punitive damages in a lawsuit against her former silicon valley employer. ellen powell is suing cliner perkins for $16 million. she's claiming discrimination and retaliation after having an affair with a senior colleague. powell's husband runs a hedge fund that went bankrupt around the time she filed suit. closing arguments are set for tuesday. an unlikely partnership is helping to make san francisco streets a little safer tonight. the cannabis clubs donated money for the city's sponsored gun buyback event.

. a bay area community is coming together to help save a san francisco man's life. 47-year-old chris carpenter has stage 4 peripheral t-cell lymphoma cancer. treatments have caused his health to decline. doctors told them chris needs a bone marrow transplant. >> a lot of african-americans are not donating. so it's a little hard for me to find a match. bone marrow would save my life to keep me around. >> chris has a twin brother but carl was not a match.

his family says insurance only covers siblings. they hosted a fund-raising dinner tonight to help pay for more potential donors to get tested. when we look at the views of the grand canyon we may assume those views will always be there. but for one man they won't be. and time is running out. abc news reporter steve osensami has his story. >> reporter: james mclemore is going blind. >> unbelievable. >> reporter: he's here at the grand canyon to see as much as he can before genetic retinal disease takes his sight. >> it you cup your hands around the sides that's what i see. >> reporter: this is what he has left, like looking through a broken window at the end of a rainy hallway. just 15% of normal vision. >> the fact that i get to see this, i'll never take that for granted. a lot of people take things for granted. and you just can't do that.

>> reporter: the group that brought him here took jonathan to see niagara falls. and devin costello on a helicopter ride to the canyon on a glorious sunny day. both are already legally blind. michael benson said he's teaching them to burn the images in their mind. he, too, is losing his vision. >> i'm not in denial. i have advanced glaucoma. >> how do you burn this into your mind? >> i'm just going to sit here and kind of look at everything and take a moment to be quiet, just kind of take it all in. >> reporter: james took a number of moments and years from now when the last of his sight is gone, he said his imagination will bring him here. abc news, the grand canyon. wow. oakland's big running festival is this weekend. tomorrow's marathon will take runners from downtown to the oakland hills. there's also a half marathon. you can expect road closures throughout the morning.

antioch checking in with a temperature of 61 degrees at this hour. satellite and radar combined, early on today, we had a fair amount of sunshine. by the afternoon the clouds started thickening ahead of the cold front. rain pushes in after the midnight hour. 6:00 on your sunday morning, it's overcast skies. and some drizzle popping up across the region. the afternoon will feature breaks of sunshine. by sunday early in the evening, 5:00, partly cloudy skies. however, that cold front will slide through here early monday morning. by 2:00 in the morning, you do see more pop-up showers, unsettled weather pattern as we head back to work and school. not a lot of rain, unfortunately. system doesn't have a lot of moisture associated with it. around the bay numbers generally less than .10 of an inch of rain. we're talking about less than half of an inch of rain once this system is out of here. in terms of the forecast for the oakland running festival tomorrow lots of clouds perhaps a sprinkle early on at

good evening. i'm katie marzullo. police in two bay area cities shot two men tonight. the latest one happened in richmond. police say a man with a gun ran from a traffic stop, shot at officers, they shot back, hitting him. he is expected to survive. in vallejo, officers shot a man in a busy strip mall parking lot on admiral callaghan lane. the man was armed with a hunting knife and a gun. but investigators have not confirmed that to abc 7 news. police in sonoma are investigating a shocking murder. a man's body was found stuffed inside a plastic trash bin and left on the steps of sonoma city hall. police have determined the man was killed in a mobile home park off highway 12. a suspect has been arrested.

one hiker is dead, another has serious injuries after they fell off a cliff at arch rock at point reyes national seashore. witnesses say they heard rocks falling before the hikers fell. a new terror threat, a list, and a demand appearing online calling for attacks on u.s. troops. the pentagon and fbi are investigating. abc news reporter alex marquardt has the story. >> reporter: it appears to be nothing short of a hit list. a group calling itself the islamic state hacking division posting photos and addresses of 100 servicemen and women online calling on isis supporters in the u.s. to kill them. most of the information publicly available, but chillingly collected and compiled to inspire attacks. >> the real challenge is it makes one person motivated to act by this message. >> reporter: the defense department telling abc news they can't confirm the validity of the message but are contacting

the families of those on the list. the fbi says they're aware of the post which comes after previous warnings to service members about keeping identifying information off of social media. this latest threat highlighting the growth of hiisis around the world, after unprecedented attacks in tunisia and yemen this week. >> the number of foreign fighters going to join isis definitely has grown over the past several months. this message is having an impact. >> reporter: in yemen's capital on friday, four suicide bombings leaving more than 130 people dead. fueling the chaos there that today reportedly led to the evacuation of u.s. troops serving in yemen. >> that was alex marquardt reporting. and new security camera video released today showing two isis gunmen p in tunisia. you see them come face to face

with one man but they let him go. 21 people died in wednesday's attack. security forces later shot and killed the attackers. survivors say despite the scary experience, they feel tanzania is a safe place to visit. >> hundreds and hundreds of tunisians say we support you. this is not what tunisia is. i feel very safe in tunisia. i love it. and canceling our trips, or canceling vacation plans is just giving the bad guys and letting them win. >> prosecutors have detained 20 people linked to the deadly attack. pope francis showed another display of acceptance today after going to a prison in naples. the head of the roman catholic church visited a detention center to have lunch with inmates, some of who are gay, transgender or hiv positive. the pontiff has sought to make the church more accepting of people who have been marginalized by it in hopes to engage them.

a colorado 12-year-old faces attempted first-degree murder charges after police say she tried to poison her mother with bleach. it was because her mom took away her iphone. sheriff's deputies say the woman first felt sick after drinking a smoothie. she noticed the smell of bleach from her glass. a few days later the mother recognize the the smell of bleach coming from something else she was going to drink. >> i smelled the bleach, in the carafe. she confronted her daughter. her daughter told her that she was trying to kill her for taking her iphone. >> deputies say the pre-teen had planned this a couple of different times. a woman in maine went online to request her credit report. nothing unusual about that. but what she got back in the mail shocked her. and outraged identity theft experts. instead of getting her credit report equifax sent her the individual credit reports for 300 other people each one

on 2015 jetta and passat models. this is nico, the 3-year-old burmese mountain dog hailed a hero after saving a woman stuck in a rip current off ventura county beach. the woman and a man who swam out about 100 yards to save her, screamed for help and that's when nico jumped in after them.
