breaking news tonight out of san jose. a police officer is dead and a manhunt is underway for the gunman. >> sky 7hd was overhead as does eps of officers including the s.w.a.t team and other agencies swarmed the entire area. police tell people to stay inside as they search for the shooter. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. police call it an active shooter situation. >> it happened 19er is -- near center road 1k3 u -- and umbarger. a news conference is just wrapping up. lilian? >> that's right. the san jose police chief just wrapped up their news conference. this is the first time a san jose police officer has been killed in the line of duty in 14 years. it all started 6:45 p.m. police responded to a drunk man with weapons with a rifle threatening no kill himself.

when officers arrived he shot at the officers and gunfire was exchanged and an officer was hit and pronounced dead at the scene. the gunman is on the loose. officers surrounded the area in an effort to fiend him. a massive manhunt is underway. neighboring law enforcement agencies are helping in the search. police believe the gunman may still be in his apartment. he has been identified as scott dunham a 57-year-old man. >> this is a difficult day for us and our community. i can assure you the person responsible for this act will be apprehended. >> this strikes the heart of all of us in san jose and throughout the region. we will continue to do everything necessary to ensure the safety in the community in the area and to bring the assailant to justice. >> now san jose police are not

yet releasing the name of the fallen officer, but they do say he is a veteran of the department. live in san jose lilian kim, abc7 news. >> lilian, thank you. we continue our live team coverage with abc7 fuse reporter lisa amin gulezian. she spoke with witnesses. >> the situation is still unfolding. it has gone to hour number four in the officer-involved shooting. the situation is just down the road at the centerville terrace condos. that's on the right side of the street. you can see a lot of police officers in the road. the shopping center has turned into the incident command center. this is where plans are being devised right now how to get the suspect out of his home. a hostage negotiator came in to try to get the suspect to turn himself in. police say he shot and killed a veteran police officer of the sources tell me the officer was on the force for more than a decade. he worked patrol and was a field training officer which

means recruits shadowed him worked from him and learned from him. here is what the suspect's neighbors say happened. >> there was a big bang. i grabbed my grandkids and told them to sit down. i went to the window to look out, and at that time i saw two police officers with their guns pointed. i don't know if the sounds i was hearing was a gunshot because i moved back away from the window and i heard the noise. >> the sergeant in charge of the operation knocked on the wall and yelled up to the window. he will knock three times and we are doing evacuations so get warm clothes. >> the entire complex was evacuated and residents were

told they need to stay away possibly through the night. deputies are here trying to help . the mayor arrived and the meeting ended abruptly. once city leaders learned of the officer's death he was briefed and then left the scene and went over to the press conference where lilian kim was standing by just now. roads meantime are closed off. center road was closed and this will be an area you will want to avoid. live in san jose, lisa amin gulezian abc7 news. >> thank you. >> the last san jose police officer to die in the line of duty was jeffrey fontana. he was just 24 years old, a rookie. he was shot and killed during a traffic stop in a quiet cul-de-sac. the shooter was a wanted felon and was currently serving a second-degree murder sentence for killington tan gnaw.

for killing fontana. they are posting condolences for the officers shot. many of the messengers feature a badge with a black bar across it in memory of a fallen brother. they posted this picture to instagram and it is a thin blue line often used to symbolize a fallen officer. >> we will bring you updates throughout this newscast and on-line and twitter on abc7 news bay area. the other story is the search of a woman who may have been kidnapped. she disappeared yesterday. tonight the search turned in a new direction. alan wang is live with the story. alan? >> earlier the dive team thought they had found something significant under the water. tonight denise is still missing and police have no suspects.

around 7:00 a dive team was searching near the highway 37 bridge. they are searching for any sign of 29-year-old denise huskins. >> we don't know exactly what it is, but our search dogs had an interest in the area of the water. >> aaron -- erin quinn said she was kidnapped from this house and is being held for ransom. >> don't hurt her. please don't hurt her. >> her father and uncle work add could kaiser vallejo hospital as physical therapists. >> i know she didn't just let somebody come and take her. i know that. she would have put up a fight. >> quinn told police denise was force whree -- forcibly taken from the home but he didn't report her missing until that afternoon. >> why so long? was he incapacitated? was there a reason it took so long? did he feel threatened 1234.

>> the toyota camry was taken during the abduction but they won't say where it was recovered. quinn was cooperating and they hillary search searching the water. alan wang, abc7 news. investigators are on the lookout of a man who tried to abduct a 12-year-old girl. she was waiting to are her mother at middletown methodist church when the man got out of a pick up and grabbed her. she kicked him in the shin. the man took off. he is described as a short stalky white man and missing a front tooth. now to the latest on the plane crash in the french alps. all 150 passengers and crew on board the german winged flight are dead. the black box recovered from the crash is the cockpit voice recorder. air traffic controllers lost contact with the flight at an altitude of 6,000 feet after a long dissent.

they are calling the crash an accident. there is no sign of terrorism. here is elizabeth hurr. >> flying over the wreckage in a helicopter searching for signs of life only saw debris scattered and smoldering. >> this is a tragic moment. it is a dark day in our history. >> the german giant owns the air because passenger jet that crashed in the remote area. it was just after 10:00 a.m. the plane took off from barcelona. 45 minutes in the plane begins dropping from 38,000 to 6000 feet. losing all contact with air traffic control. rescue choppers rushed to the scene within 30 minutes. now the french ams -- now the french alps are being looked at. >> 700 people will be working on the operation. for the military helicopters

and the hardware to reach the crash site some of the recovery workers will have to walk by foot. >> of the 150 people on board now feared dead are 16 students and two teachers teachers from this high school in germany where a growing memorial sits outside. at this airport in d usseldorf disbelief and grief. >> passengers may have known something on the ground if the crew had anything to say to them, but they probably had no clue as they were about to hit the ridge. >> the key clue is that black box recovered from the crash site. it was already sent over for analysis to figure out what went wrong. abc news, new york. a fast-moving fire has a family out of their home. it was sending up the thick black smoke. that's the garage of the home that's on fire. witnesses say police shot and killed a pittbull that was fighting with another dog at the scene.

continues right now on twitter at abc7 news bay area and on abc7news.com. the santa clara water district called for drastic cuts in water use. they approved a goal to slash use by 30% and limit lawn watering to just two days a week. retailers that purchased the water and distribute to residents will not be forced to comply, but they will be encouraged to adapt. the water serves 80% of the district is ready to embrace the reduction. >> a bear citing has people on -- sighting has people on high alert in tracy. this was taken near grant line. it was also seen a few hours earlier a few blocks away. officers checked out both areas but could not find the bear. fish and game has been notified. dubbed the only gourmet rock festival, outside lands revealed the headliners. it is elton john, mumford and sons and the black eyed

you will notice upper 70s to low 80s wednesday afternoon. the coastal areas are held in check by the fog. numbers will rise to the mid80s and yes it will be warm. the coastal areas will remain in the 60s and the 70s and then friday it is a little cooler for all areas as the sea breeze comes in a bit. it is still going to be warm inland. tomorrow morning watch out for the fog. allow a little more time for the morning commute and you may want to dress in layers. it is going to be cool. mid40s to the mid50s to start off your morning. for the afternoon, a pleasant one in the south bay. 79 in gilroy and 76 san jose. los gatos is almost 80 degrees. 74 in mill pea dis. sunny side up on the peninsula. 72 san mateo and mountain view, here is where it will hold the temperature down. daily city 62 with lingering fog. 68 in downtown san francisco. and in the north bay 60s along the coastline. we will get you into the upper
