breaking news and positive news about this woman who's reported kidnapping monday morning triggered a massive search. her father says she has turned up alive. >> her father just confirmed to abc news that the 29-year-old showed up in her hometown of huntington beach in southern california. wayne freedman joins us with more on this mystery. >> reporter: that's pretty much the crux of it. no word from the police. let me back out of the frame and show you. a lot of news reporters, media waiting for the police to tell something about this story that has changed modes.

it has transitioned from a kidnapped missing woman to a woman found. the question is, why. as you said the father told abc news that his daughter, 29-year-old denise, is alive and well at her mother's house in huntington beach california down around los angeles. it was late last night that police were searching the waters looking for her body. now that apparently is no longer necessary. the father told abc news he received a call telling him that she is in fact okay. denise told him that she's walking from her mother's house in huntington beach to his own house in huntington beach. he has called police asked them to find her on the street to pick her up take her to his house. he gave no explanation of how he says she got to huntington beach or why nor do we know yet why her boyfriend and co-worker waited several hours to report

her abducted with a note. police have repeatedly said that she is not a suggest spektr. problem right now is police aren't saying anything except this will be a press conference at 3:00 this afternoon. a whole lot of questions. wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> thanks very much. to our other top story. hours after a police officer was killed in the line of duty the man who ambushed him and held police in a stand overneveright is found dead. the officer was a beloved veteran of the force. 38-year-old michael johnson. the man accused of killing him, he was found dead this morning on his apartment balcony after a standoff that lasted more than eight hours. >> neighbors evacuated from the scene they are being let back into their homes. a memorial tribute to officer johnson is growing. >> reporter: officers from

several agencies have been gathering at the police department throughout the morning, flags are at half staff. the department mourns its first fallen officer in san jose in 14 years. flowers are placed outside the san jose police department in memory of fallen officer michael johnson. johnson was a 14-year veteran with the force. he was shot and killed last night while responding to a call. the devastating loss has left fellow officers shaken. >> officers are grieving, they will do so for quite some time. as will many of us in the department. you know our hearts, our prayers go out with the family of michael, our brother. >> reporter: early this morning police cars lined up in' procession to lead his body away from the crime scene. this man saw the police presence last night. he heard there was a shooting

and was worried about his longtime friend who he first met when johnson was a teenager. >> i texted him. you okay? and i never got a response. >> reporter: they trained together in martial arts. he described him as a great friend who worked hard and loved serving his community. >> outside of the schools, outside of his uniform he's a normal guy. biggest heart that you can imagine. >> reporter: today agencies all over the bay area wear a black band over their badges condolences are pouring in. johnson's own police department tweeted a solemn good-bye. it says, rest in peace fallen brother michael johnson number 3718. this is the first san jose police officer to be killed in the line of duty since 2001. officer jeffrey phonefontana was shot to death. he and johnson were in the same police academy class.

in a press release the police officers association called the suspect a coward and added, even while grieving other officers did their duty to make sure nobody else was hurt. live in san jose, abc 7 news. >> thank you. we're learning more about how the tragedy unfolded as well as the gunman who took officer johnson's life. neighbors who knew scott are stunned by his actions. abc 7 news reporter am y is live on the scene. >> reporter: center road is still closed. the officers from the police department who are grieving loss of one of their own are still here having to investigate his death. police say officer michael johnson was shot without warning. he and a few other officers responded to an apartment on center road around 6:45 last night when a woman called to say she was worried about the man living there.

>> initial information was that he was disupon dent that he had a gun and that he was -- there was mention about him wanting to kill himself. >> reporter: he fired on the officers when they arrived killing johnson. officers fired back but didn't know whether they had hit dunnham. >> we didn't know what it was. heard the boom boom. >> reporter: this man lives next door. his two grandkids were visiting last night when this all happened. 4-year-old legacy and his a-year-olda 5-year-old sister. >> i got away from the windows and got on floor. it was kind of scary. everything was kind of happening so fast. >> reporter: police surrounded the building brought in the s.w.a.t. team and proceeded slowly and cautiously. it wasn't until 3:30 in the morning, eight hours later when they discovered with a robot camera that he was dead on his balcony. >> it's a good possibility he was dead the whole time. there was no contact on any dialogue or communication with

any of our officers after that. >> it's shocking. i never would have imagined that it would have been him. >> reporter: this man says he never saw any signs of his neighbor being depressed. he was always friendly. >> you would say, how are you doing every day. he wasn't the type person to have an attitude. how do you go from being a nice person to a killer. >> reporter: i asked whether he was killed by police or whether he shot himself. the chief says they are working on out the details working to confirm how he died. they are gathering evidence, talking to witnesses and call this a very difficult time for them. >> thank you. the governor released a statement this morning. it says, ann and i extend our deepest condolences to officer johnson's family.

aaa analyzed 1,700 videos showing teen drivers in the moments before a crash. nearly six of ten were distracted. that is more than four times previous estimates from police reports. >> we're hoping that our central findings of the study will make parents more aware of the magnitude of the problem and the potential for disaster. >> reporter: car accidents are the number one cause much teenage deaths in the university. california bans techltsing and any phone hands free for teen drivers, officials say even chatting with friends sitting next to them can cause a young driver to lose focus. >> when you get two or three, especially three teenagers in a vehicle at the same time bad things tend to happen. >> reporter: aaa recommends laws restrict passengers to one non-family member for the first six moves driving. a toy store popular with children and families for nearly 70 years is closing its doors.

driverless cars could have a unique feature. it was awarded a patent for airbags that go on the outside of the car. the airbags would have a sensor that would trigger them to deploy moments before a collision happens. the airbags would be made out of a traditional material than traditional airbag which could cause a pedestrian to bounce off a vehicle on impact. tesla's next car has been spotted. a video was posted. the car is a beta version of the
