good afternoon and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm larry beil. we're learning more about the tragic shooting death of san jose police officer michael johnson. the department released his photo on twitter this morning. he was a veteran of the force. the killer has been identified as scott dunham. this afternoon neighbors are re revealing details about how last night's chaotic events unfolded. we have live team coverage beginning with chris in san jose. >> reporter: police say officer johnson was shot without warning. it happened behind me at this apartment complex. we've seen some crews go in and

out of that unit. neighbors we spoke with were completely stunned by the events that unfolded. debra lives just two units down from where the shooting happened. >> sirens on all sides of the house. i looked down the street and there must have been 20 police cars blocking off this road. >> reporter: san jose police responded to this apartment unit on center road at around 6:45 last night at the request of a family member. they were there to checkup on 57-year-old scott dunham but things went horribly wrong. >> what could have possibly have been going through that would make him do something so -- how do you go from being a nice person to a killer. >> reporter: police say dunham fired on officers upon arrival killing officer michael johnson. officers fired back but didn't know whether they hit dunham. within minutes police and s.w.a.t. had the building surrounded. neighbors were quickly evacuated. >> we're going to take you down the stairs and protect you on

both sides. when you get to the bottom, make an immediate right turn and go into unit 116. >> reporter: it wasn't until 3:30 this morning when police found dunham dead on his balcony by using a robotic camera. >> officers were obviously crying, grieving. they will do so quite some time. >> reporter: a san jose councilman visited the crime scene today. grateful for johnson's service to the city. >> most of all appreciate the men and women in uniform who put their lives at risk and who sacrifice for our own safety and welfare. >> reporter: residents counting their blessings. >> all in all, i'm here the neighbors are here, everyone is safe except the officer and the gunman. >> reporter: chris ngyuen abc 7 news. >> flags were lowered to half staff to honor officer johnson, including those at city hall and police headquarters. governor jerry brown said the flags at the state capitol would

also be lowered. >> officer johnsones family issued a statement saying quote, we love you mike. our husband son brother, uncle and hero. >> a memorial to officer johnson is growing outside san jose police headquarters. now a long-time friend is talking to abc 7 news about his effort to contact johnson last night when he first learned about the shooting. abc 7 news reporter elissa harrington continues our team coverage. >> reporter: flowers are placed outside the san jose police department in memory of fallen officer michael johnson. johnson was a 14-year veteran with the force. he was shot and killed last night while responding to a call. the devastating loss has left fellow officers shaken. >> officers were obviously crying, grieving. they will do so for quite some time. as will many of us in the department. you know, our hearts our prayers go out with the family are michael our brother.

>> reporter: early this morning police cars lined up on center road in a procession to lead his body away from the crime scene. frank saungtntiago saw the heavy police presence. he was worried about his long-time friend. >> i text him and said hey, are you okay bro? i never got a response. >> reporter: the two trained together in martial arts. santiago described him as a great friend who worked hard and loved serving his community. >> outside of the school, outside of his uniform, he's just a normal guy. the biggest heart you can imagine. >> reporter: today agencies all over the bay area wear a black band over their badges. condolences are pouring in. johnson's own police department tweeted a solemn good-bye. it says rest in peace fellow officer michael johnson number 3718. this is the first police officer

to be killed in the line of duty since 2001. officer jeffrey fontana was spot during a traffic stop. in a strange coincidence fontana and johnson were in the same police academy staff. flags are at half staff at the san jose police department. the police officers association released a statement calling the suspect a coward and added even while grieving other officers did their duty to make sure nobody else was hurt. elissa harrington, abc 7 news. san jose police officers are receiving condolences today from fellow officers around the country. here's san francisco police chief greg sur. >> it just doesn't get any worse than this. going to do your job, going to help and not making it home. you know i mean it's just -- it's just -- it never gets any easier and it happens all too often. >> the chief said he reached out to san jose's chief last night

and offered to send some of his officers if san jose's department needs any help while the funeral service is under way. the attorney general is offering her condolences to officer johnson's family. she issued this statement saying yesterday's tragedy is a grave reminder of the risks that our law enforcement officers take each day when they put on the badge to protect their communities. a statement from governor jerry brown, officer johnson will be remembered for his courage and dedicated service. we join the entire san jose community in mourning this tragic loss. >> do stay with abc 7 news for continuing coverage of the story. we will continue to bring you updates online at abc7news.com and on twitter. other news the santa clara county sheriff's deputy fired his gun today while responding to a drug call. sky 7 hd was over the scene in the 3600 block of swygart road where authorities say a deputy shot at a person in a car who was trying to run him over.

deputies had been called to the scene after getting a report of drug-related activity. the driver did not hit the deputy and then drove off. he's still on the run this afternoon. deputies did arrest two people in a different car at that scene. in the last hour vallejo police wrapped up a news conference to update us on the case of a southern california woman said to be kidnapped and held for ransom. >> we learned today she is in fact safe. the case has captivated attention from the bay area to huntington beach. take a look at this video. it shows huskins walking with police outside of an apartment building in huntington beach. wayne friedman joins us live now from vallejo. this has been a very unusual case to say the least. >> reporter: unusual and still mysterious. vallejo police talked but didn't say much. they said they don't want to jeopardize their investigation. they did confirm denise huskins turned up this morning down south. they didn't say when she's

coming back and didn't say if she's coming back. let's begin with the lead investigator vallejo police lieutenant kenny park. >> a lot of the facts are still coming in. we have minimal facts that we're still trying to figure out. again, we're confident that we're going to be able to piece together this puzzle and have a better picture of what really occurred, how it occurred and when it occurred once we speak to miss huskins. >> reporter: denise huskins turned up at huntington beach this morning at her mother's office. at 9:30 she contacted her father and said she was safe, that the kidnappers had dropped her off. here is more information from her uncle, jeff cane. >> who and why, you know, who did this and why did they do it. you know those are the questions that i would like answered. >> there's nobody that's a person of interest at this point. everyone is. there's nobody that's been eliminated. we are talking to anyone and anything. >> reporter: persons of interest and a lot of interested people.

san francisco has taken another step toward its goal of

creating 30,000 units of affordable housing over the next nine years. this latest project is helping a special group of people. carolyn tyler has the story. >> reporter: charisma aaron has the keys to a new chapter in her life. today she showed off her ocean avenue apartment to mayor ed lee and a crowd of supporters. the 21-year-old spent years in the foster care system but despite the challenge is now attending college and says having this stability will make a difference. >> this is permanent housing. it's going to help me further my education and really focus in to get my degree. >> reporter: a report shows san francisco needs 400 units of housing for 18 to 25-year-olds who are homeless or exiting foster care. 25 apartments in this building are set aside. plus there are 45 for families. residents will pay 30% of their income for rent. we are told the nonprofit

developers mercy housing california and bernal heights neighborhood center received 5,000 applications. >> we used to think it was insane when we got 1,000 applications. now it's stepped up. clearly buildings like this make a difference. >> reporter: this used to be a muni bus turn-around, so with the city owning the lantdd, that made it more simple to develop. >> this is in a line of housing that hasn't been built in an aggressive way for many years but we have lots of needs. we've got thousands of people on the waiting list and our commitment is to take care of as many as possible. >> reporter: in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. facebook's almost annual f-8 conference is under way in san francisco. today founder and ceo mark zuckerberg kicked off this two-day event by unveiling the next phase in facebook messenger. it's called messenger platform. zuckerberg says the app can create and share content in line

and independent of the news feed. >> now you're going to be able to easily finding different services that help you say anything you want better, and you can create content, you can share it directly into messenger. your friends are going to be easily able to reply and install the apps that you're sharing with them. >> zuckerberg says more than 600 million people use messenger every month. tonight at 6:00 reporter jonathan bloom takes us behind the scenes at the f-8 conference which is expected to draw more than 2500 software developers this year. a new report out today is tainting the entire seafood industry. plus exercise could help cancer patients. jane king has those stories and more in today's health and wellness report. >> reporter: the associated press says the global seafood industry is tainted by the use of slaves. many of the fishermen were from

myanmar. of the major restaurant chains and supermarkets contacted by the a.p. wouldn't speak on the record but did issue statements that strongly condemned abuse. there is a recall based on one of the suppliers saying spinach may be contaminated with listeria. americans have fallen out of love with diet sodas possibly for good. sales of low calorie soft drinks have fallen 20% in the u.s. in the past five years. that's according to euro monitor. this year they're on pace to fall another 5%. and finally, exercise has been shown to aid cancer treatment. a study done by duke university and reported in "the new york times" says aerobic exercise slowed the growth of cancerous tumors and made cancer more sensitive to chemotherapy. from the nasdaq i'm jane king. here's to your health. time for aur check check on your weather. >> spencer christian basking in

the glow once again. >> i'm basking and it's glowing. we will have at least one more day of this and it may be glowier tomorrow. a live look at doppler hd sunny skies and not a cloud to be seen anywhere near the coastline. there's go to a live view looking out over the bay. these are the forecast features. record highs are possible tomorrow in some locations. coastal cooling begins on friday. it will be cooler in all areas on saturday. satellite image shows a big ridge of high pressure dome of warm air dome of high pressure, a mass of warm air bringing our temperatures up to their peak during this little warmup tomorrow and then temperatures will start to drop off a little bit on friday. but here's a look -- i'm looking at temperatures tomorrow. notice low to mid-80s inland low 80s around the bay. up to 69 at the coast and half moon bay. record highs are possible. but then on friday the coastal cooling begins with that onshore flow. fog returning to the coast. it will be much cooler at the

coast on friday by 10 degrees or more. it will cool down around the bay but some inland locations may top 80 degrees on friday. look for clear skies and cool conditions. we'll see upper 40s to low 50s in inland locations and low 50s will be the lows around the bay. tomorrow afternoon look for highs in the south bay in the mid-80s, up to 84 at san jose which would tie the record high for that date, for tomorrow's date in san jose. on the peninsula we'll see upper 70s to right around 80 degrees at redwood city mountain view on the coast mid to upper 60s. even with fog approaching. downtown san francisco will have a high of 74 tomorrow. in the north bay we'll see highs of 80 at santa rosa 80 at napa 79 at sonoma. over on the east bay look for mainly upper 70s. but around 80 at castro valley and fremont. and the inland east bay will be our warmest region of the bay area overall with highs in the low to mid-80s.

an hbo show filmed in san francisco is getting the boot. the network announced it is cancelling the series. it ended its second season three days ago and will wrap up with a final special to close various story lines. it followed a group of gay friends living in san francisco. it received critical praise but never pulled in a big audience. it took advantage of rebates in san francisco offered to film in the city. now the san francisco film commission released a statement today thanking hbo for filming in the city. the show created hundreds of local jobs. some sports news the san francisco giants are now among the most valuable teams in all of major league baseball. new rankings out from forbes show the yankees are baseball's most valuable team worth $3.2 billion. the dodgers are right behind

them. there's a little bit of a gap but $2.4 billion. red sox $2.1 billion and the giants said to be worth an estimated $2 billion. forbes said the giants have doubled their value in just over a year. that's what happens after you win three championships in five years. the a's, by the way, still seeking a new stadium near the bottom worth just $725 million. well the warriors won their first pacific division title in 39 years capturing the crown last night with a win in portland. >> just to put this in perspective, since not all of us were around in 1976 but steph curry's father del was in junior high school the last time golden state won the pacific division. steph, once again the star last night with 33 points. the warriors as they have been all season long the best team in the nba. curry the front runner to win the mvp award. he has seen the lean times and

at 4:30 here's the news making headlines where you live. san jose police officers are mourning the loss of a fallen comrade. officer michael johnson was killed in the line of duty yesterday evening while responding to the call of a

suicidal man. johnson was a 14-year veteran of the force. he's the 12th san jose officer to die on the job in the department's history. abc 7 news reporter david louis tweeted this photo of the memorial wall. he writes johnson's photo will be added to the wall. we will have a live report with reaction from fellow officers at 5:00. the family of brightright-to-die advocate britney maynard's family released a video recorded before she died. laura will have a full report at 5:00. at least three americans were among the victims of the crash of germanwings 9525. search and recovery crews are scouring through the impact site in a remote part of the french alps looking for important clues to identify the cause of that crash. marcy gonzalez has the latest. >> reporter: search teams

scouring the steep remote crash scene in the french alps for the victims, the up with 50 people who were on board germanwings 9525, all presumed dead including three americans. two of them a mother and daughter from virginia. yvonne and emily selke's family releasing a statement expressing their grief calling them two wonderful, caring amazing people who meant so much to so many. >> we extend our deepest condolences. >> reporter: investigators are making progress in trying to figure out what caused the airbus a-320 heading from barcelona to dusseldorf to quickly drop before slamming into a mountain. the cockpit voice recorder was found intact and is now being analyzed. >> we just succeeded in getting an audio file which contains useable sounds and voices. >> reporter: the french president said the casing for the second black box was also

recovered. the flight data recorder was not inside. >> in a really severe impact it's not that hard for it to break free. >> reporter: search teams working desperately to find it as well as the remains of the victims being mourned today around the world. we've now learned one of the american victims, yvonne selke, was a government contractor. her daughter emily a 2013 graduate of drexel university in philadelphia. the state department hasn't released the name of the third american who was on board. marcy gonzalez, abc news, new york. there is major upheaval today in yemen. it appears the city of aiden is about to call into the hands of shiite rebels. it comes after yemen's president fled his palace and rebels took over the international airport. it is the country's economic hub. the shiite rebels captured sanaa. a warm welcome on capitol

hill for the new president of afghanistan. he told a joint session of congress that his country owes a profound debt to the more than 2200 soldiers killed in afghanistan since 2001. he also promised to be a good steward of continued u.s. assistance to his country as it rebuilds. the speech comes a day after president obama announced he would leave 9800 american troops in afghanistan until at least the ending of this year. abc 7 news anchor cheryl jennings interviewed president ghani last month. bowe bergdahl is being charged with desertion. military prosecutors accused bergdahl of abandoning his post in 2009 before his capture by the taliban. he faces a court-martial on three counts desertion avoiding military service and misbehavior before the enemy. the charges come after a lengthy investigation following bergdahl's release in exchange for five taliban figures last year. he could receive life in prison if convicted on all charges.

legal analysts say it's likely he will reach an agreement that could avoid prison time. sunnyvale police have arrested a taxicab driver and his roommate for the sexual assault of an intoxicated passenger. the driver and his roommate were booked into santa clara county jail sunday evening. an offduty police officer said he saw both men push a woman out of the cab. he called on-duty officers to pull the vehicle over. the woman said she had been drinking and was given more to drink during the cab ride. she also said she was sexually assaulted. firefighters today helped two people trapped inside a burning home get out safely. sky 7 hd was over the scene just before 9:00 a.m. crews thehad to rescue two residents after they were unable to get out of the house because of heavy smoke. firefighters put out the fire a short time later. no one was hurt during the

rescue. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. the highway patrol closed eastbound 80 between fairfield and vacaville after a truck spilled a tar-like substance on three lanes about 8:30 this morning. this is video taken by sky 7 hd. reports say the trailer was heading to a resurfacing project when its trailer disengaged and dumped the substance on the lanes. that backed up traffic for hours while that substance was being cleaned up. now to a high-rise headache facing new construction in san francisco. a shortage for glass for the windows on all of those skyscrapers. lyanne melendez joins us to tell us why. >> reporter: larry, any time there are problems at the ports, you know you're going to have delays in getting what's inside those containers, and that's exactly what has happened here. when you think about it, larry, these ports along the entire west coast including the port of oakland and of course those in southern california they all

represent about 40% of u.s. international trade. who knew a labor dispute at the ports would have an impact on the construction of a few high rises in downtown san francisco. take 399 fremont seen here from sky 7 hd. today builders worked on finally installing their glass systems after weeks of waiting for them to arrive from china. the dispute over a new contract for dock workers caused serious delays. the worst months were january and remember when on average 20 ships were waiting at the port of oakland. now that an agreement has been reached, things are slowly improving, but the backlog is still bad in southern california. >> there is still significant congestion there. this morning there were 25 ships in san pedro bay awaiting berths at the ports of los angeles and long beach. >> reporter: that affects the

port of oakland because most of those ships then stop here. >> we're hoping to be at normal operation at the port within four to six weeks. we're getting there. productivity has increased significantly. the wait times for truck drivers overall are improving. >> reporter: another building, 299 fremont, hasn't installed a single window. these construction companies buy the glass from chinese companies at a significant discount. but now without the glass that wraps their building much of the inside work can't continue, resulting in costly delays. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. coming up the bay area based company getting ready to cut a thousand jobs. but first, downed trees, smashed cars power outages. the wind-whipped problems in southern california this afternoon. looking down toward ocean beach, nothing but clear sky, although a little hint of coastal fog is developing right now. tomorrow, record heat is

we keep seeing these flashes of light, whether they're transformers blowing some sort of explosions, it's hard to tell really. it appears just from looking here that there is some sort of perhaps tunnel activity it's hard to tell. but you can tell it's just dark and gray and we're getting reports of hail the size of golf balls and isolated tornados. a moment ago it appeared -- there appeared to be some things going through the air. >> right there. you can see what looks like the center of the funnel cloud right there. >> right. >> and every so often we get what looks like an explosion. maybe it's a transformer but there's also a long line of cars, traffic desperately trying to get out of this area. the national weather service says this is a life-threatening tornado near tulsa moving east at 45 miles per hour, and it appears to be dragging a lot of stuff in its wake. you mentioned the hail size --

>> golf ball size hail. >> and the national weather service has advised everybody in this area to take cover and get in a basement or a storm shelter because these things are so unpredictable. >> it's hard to tell. >> it's hard to know whether those are explosions or what's going on. clearly, if you're in tulsa right now, it is a scary situation. >> and 10,000 people are without power. a funnel cloud definitely, definitely for sure spotted. it's hard to tell from our monitors here in the studio. >> we'll keep you posted throughout the course of the afternoon on abc 7 news. as we go to spencer spencer do you have any thoughts as you look at this? >> a dangerous situation there. i'm going to show you what's happening in that area right now. there have been severe thunderstorms. let's go over to the doppler radar right now. severe thunderstorms throughout the region during the last couple of hours. you can see the line of storms from around oklahoma city up through tulsa going into parts of arkansas and missouri. so these are widespread thunderstorms but the tornado warning is in effect right now

for tulsa until 6:00 p.m. a really dangerous situation. the winds in a tornado can exceed 200 250 miles per hour, twisting, blowing debris all through the air. large damaging hail stones swirling around as well. so we'll just keep watching this to see how it develops. hoping it will wind down and ease up sometime soon. looking at the national outlook for many to we'll see more thunderstorms in parts of the southeast tomorrow, from the south atlantic coast down to the gulf coast. rain showers up in the northeast, snow showers over parts of the great lakes and dry and calm over the western two-thirds of the country. that includes california where tomorrow it will be sunny and warm just befreverywhere. 90 in los angeles tomorrow 95 in palm springs, 88 in fresno. here in the bay area we may see a couple of record highs. san jose is expected to reach 84, which would tie the record high. morgan hill is expected to reach

a san francisco based bank is cutting a thousand jobs and closing one of its offices,

citing an improving economy. wells fargo today said it's closing its home lending service office in milwaukee because fewer homeowners are falling behind on payments and seeking help keeping their homes. the company says it will close the office in late july and inform the 1,000 employees of their job opportunities within the company, of other job opportunities within the company. no job cuts are in the bay area. wells fargo kbloidsimplies about 265,000 people. h.j. heinz is buying kraft creating a colosses that will be the fifth largest food and beverage company in north america. that deal was engineered by heinz owner, brazilian investment firm 3g capital and warren buffett's berkshire hathaway. they will have revenue of $28 billion. the cover for harper lee's

follow-up for "to kill a mockingbird" looks a lot like the old one. she unveiled the art. the new cover is a moody illustration featuring an oak tree in front. it also shows a train in the distance. the new novel begins 20 years after "mockingbird" left off with protagonist finch returning by train to her native alabama. scheduled to be released on july 14th. the consumer product safety commission is now investigating lumber liquidators. a major discount flooring company. >> 7 on your side's michael finney is here with today's consumer news. >> reporter: federal regulators are concerned about reports of high levels of formaldehyde in some laminated flooring. tests showed formaldehyde in chinese-made flooring sold by lumber liquidators. the consumer product safety commission will test the flooring to see if levels are high enough to ask for a recall.

lumber liquidators say the floors are safe and is cooperating with the ves. ford motor company says it has a way to rein in those speed demons on the road. this is provided by ford and shows how its latest s max car will automatically obey speed limits. the car was technology to scan rolled signs that will adjust the throttle to slow down if that's next. however, impatient drivers can still speed up just by pressing firmly on the gas pedal which is probably what they were doing before. nobody likes robo calls on their cell phones and thousands of consumers have signed a petition saying just that. federal law bans automated calls to cell phones without the owner's permission. bet you didn't know that. however, banks want to be exempt from that rule. they say they may need to contact customers if there's an emergency, like a fraud on their account. however, nearly 200,000 consumers signed a petition saying no robo calls at all. if there's an emergency those consumers say let a human dial

some parents in san diego county are furious. the homeowners association where they live has banned any wheeled toys so bikes, scooters. >> they are governed by an hoa, home openerowners association. anyone caught using wheeled things will be fined $50. >> the property manager defends the rule saying it's in place for safety but kids and parent alike say it's just not fair. >> $50 for riding a skateboard or scooter or bike? what is that? >> they're safe with their

today has been a day of full mourning in san jose understandably. officials say officer johnson was ambushed shot and killed without warning as he responded to check on a man threatening suicide at senter road apartment around 6:45 yesterday evening. that man, 57-year-old scott dunham opened fire at officers as they arrived at his complex. >> johnson, a beloved 14-year veteran of the force was mortally wounded. >> it's been extraordinary work by officers who were there under extraordinary duress that may well have saved other lives. >> a robot equipped with a camera found dunham lying dead on his balcony at 3:30 this morning. police do not know how or when he died. >> there's a good possibility he was dead the whole time. there was no contact or dialogue or communication with any of our officers after that. >> more on the shooting suspect dunham in just a moment. first, let's talk more about officer mike johnson. he was a 14-year veteran of the

force. he came in contact with a lot of people who are in mourning for his death today, both in his work life and his personal life. abc 7 news reporter david louis has been putting together a look at this highly respected police officer. david, a real loss at so many levels. >> reporter: a deep loss very much so, dan. the johnson family, including his wife and his father, who live here in the san jose area, are in seclusion today. they have asked for privacy as they deal with their grief. but we were able to connect with other people who knew him quite well, and they call him one of the truely good guys. there are stories behind all these flowers people are leaving in memory of mike johnson. his long-time friend frank santiago, saw a side of him when they trained off and on for 13 years at a south san jose judo academy. johnson was a black belt in judo and jujitsu. >> the biggest heart that you
