good morning, america. breaking news for our viewers out west. french prosecutors confirming the co-pilot of that doomed flight locked the captain out of the cockpit, authorities saying it was his intention to destroy the plane. the panicked pilot and the voices of the passengers heard on the voice recorder. the very latest as we come on the air in the west. also, breaking overnight, deadly tornado outbreak. [ sirens] severe storms tearing through the heartland turning over semis. >> this is all weather related. >> roofs ripped off homes. thousands without power. hail raining down. a dramatic rescue with more than 50 children trapped underneath the rubble. we talk to the survivors.

and new overnight, that california woman who claimed she was kidnapped now found safe. police are saying it was all a hoax. is this a real-life "gone girl"? ♪ the story of my life ♪ one direction, the star of one of the biggest bands walking away. was it girlfriend? his fans demanding answers. and we do say good morning, america, and we're live in the west this morning with that breaking news. the plane crash in the alps shocking new details emerging this morning from that voice recorder. >> just incredible. authorities revealing that the captain locked the co-pilot out of the cockpit. >> we'll take a look at the

staging area right now, a few miles from the crash site families of the victims arriving there this morning, they're expected to hold a mountainside vigil. we have full team coverage of these developments this morning. beginning right now with abc's david kerley. >> reporter: stunning news this was a suicide/murder mission by the co-pilot to bring this jetliner down. apparently he was alive all of the way to the ground. after locking out the pilot. passengers screaming in the seconds before impact. the co-pilot wanted to destroy the plane, says the french prosecutor chilling details at what happened at 38,000 feet. asking the co-pilot to take control. within moments the 28-year-old german co-pilot andreas lubitz locked the cockpit from inside. the pilot returns to the door knocks then starts banging, but

there is no response from inside. but the cockpit voice recorder captures the co-pilot breathing all the time normally as the jet jetliner dives 22,000 feet in about ten minutes. all of the 149 of the others aboard living through the horror of the final seconds. even the prosecutor had trouble recounting the end. the question this morning, why? the motivation? this isn't the first time. it happened in the egypt air crash and is one of the theories that happened to malaysian flight that still hasn't been found. it's not easy in the rugged french apples. >> reporter: families are attending a vigil.

the role of the co-pilot. >> reporter: investigators still want the voice recorder. may have broken apart. its heavy steel memory module possibly thrown hundreds of feet. >> we've seen it before and it can be very difficult to find them because with impact like this, that little device which is slightly bigger than a baseball and very dense can go quite a distance. >> reporter: among those who lived through the terror, three americans. emily selke was traveling with her mother. a third american still not identified. whose murder remains are here with the others on a side of the mountains in the alps. the experts say there was a conversation even jovial early then it turned very quiet, not jovial not really a conversation before the pilot left the cockpit. they just had a news conference robin, they said they're

shocked, dismayed. they said it was terrible that this plane went down but now with news that the co-pilot deliberately did this everyone is dismayed. >> they can hear him breathing on the recorder. any other indications that he was fiddling with the control panels. >> some talk whether or not he set the autopilot to the way down. the door is locked. the code can be overriden in the cockpit. >> all right, david, we're learning much more about the co-pilot this morning. the 28-year-old german. we have pictures from outside his home this morning. police posted right there. abc's terry moran is near the airline's headquarters with more. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning x,

robin. i have just come from that press conference that david mentioned, we're learning more about andreas lubitz 28-year-old, religion unknown. he lives with his parents about an hour south of here. he's a recent grad of flight training school. only 630 hours experience in the air. now the ceo of lufthansa said he had a long break in his training, unexplained at this point. no links to terrorism so far. right now, the airliner is very puzzled. he was 100% fit to fly but he's clearly the focus of a lot of attention right now. >> what is the airline's mental health screening for fie lots terry? >> the ceo says they're very proud of their mental health policies. he said that andreas lubitz

passed them. no indication of any mental health issues. flying had been his life long dream. he joined a glider team as a teenager. one thing that the ceo did mentioned, their procedures don't include interviews with family friends, it's a standard mental health screening procedure. >> people are going to want to know what he was doing that break. >> terry moran, thank you. we want to bring in aviation consultant john nance and steve ganyard. john, first the protocol in the cockpit, lot of people have been tweeting us questions about this. should there always be an extra person in the cockpit? >> in my opinion, it should be worldwide. it's not, it's an airline by airline decision. the thing is in the military

we had a thing called the no lone zone. we need this for cockpit. the level of possibility is much lower. >> john the locks on the doors, we saw increased security after 9/11 bolting them making sure they're more secured david kerley just reported that the combination can be blocked inside the cockpit, anyway the pilots should always be able to get back inside the cockpit? >> the thing is we don't assume that our pilots are going to have suicidal or homicidal intent. in this particular case it worked against us. >> i want to bring in steven now, we reported here that this was an emergency descent, but a

steady one, it could have been going down much faster eight to ten minutes, did the passengers see that pilot struggling to get back? >> it's quite chilling to think about this. something snapped inside this young man's head. you think about the idea of pushing the airplane into the ground. he could have done it very violently. it's quite chilling. deliberately with the intent to taunt the other passengers. >> very chilling. in fact early reports from the recordings would indicate that the passengers might have known something was going on. john i wanted to ask you about something that you brought up before yourself. cameras in the cockpit. what about cameras in the

cockpit? >> i don't think there's any excuse for not having cameras. they're very inexpensive. they're reliable. the argument that it's an invasion of privacy that's nonsense. it's public trust. >> john and steve, and we'll stay on this story while we're on the air here in the west. we're going to move now on to our big story this morning. tornadoes that ripped through the heart land overnight. terrifying night for millions of americans. seven reported tornadoes in oklahoma and arkansas. our extreme weather team covering it all for us this morning. you can see some of the devastation right here and look more than 120 severe weather reports from oklahoma through

arkansas and missouri. one of those storms just west of tulsa, in sand springs and that's where our rob marciano. rob? >> reporter: look at this massive roof collapse, this coming down, while dozens of children were trapped inside. one of many frightening scenarios as these tornadoes ripped through. >> reporter: overnight deadly tornadoes tearing across the midwest. >> it's like right in front of us. >> reporter: this driver in moore, oklahoma, on the highway as the twister bears down. >> look, look, we are right on this! >> reporter: watch on the right the tornado toppling a semi. >> i've got to help this guy in the truck. >> reporter: the damaging storm struck oklahoma the hardest killing at least one person. >> oh, we got another one. >> reporter: ripping roofs from houses and overturning cars. this woman inside as her truck is flipped. >> i felt glass breaking and i

was on the top sliding across. i'm very fortunate. i hung upside down until somebody got here. >> reporter: near tulsa an estimated half-mile-wide twister moving at speeds of 45 miles per hour crossing interstates. >> a semi has overturned and also a pickup truck is on its hood and this is all weather related. >> reporter: at this gymnastics studio on the west side of tulsa, firefighters rescuing more than 50 children and their instructors who took shelter inside, carrying them after the storm ripped through the building destroying it. fortunately, everyone made it out safely. more than 80,000 left without power as the twisters ravaged the state. >> that is serious. >> reporter: in sand springs, this tornado crossing a river and colliding with power lines causing them to spark. and further south, moore, oklahoma, a town devastated by an ef-5 tornado hit again overnight. a reported twister damaging

homes and businesses and ripping siding from buildings. but amid the wreckage, a symbol of hope. chase rhodes tweeting just found this after the tornado. god is with us. you know 2015 is far has been pretty quiet severe weather so far. and, robin, this certainly a scary reminder to the folks who live here just how awful it can be to be in tornado alley. >> all right, rob. thank you very much. joining us now are jennifer patterson, she's the founder and director of aim high academy that was hit so hard, and 12-year-old jamari wilson who was in the gym, as well. so good to see you both this morning and know that you are doing well. jennifer, tell us how much warning did you have and what did you do once you knew that the tornado was possibly heading your way? >> i would say probably about 30 minutes, -- 20, 30 minutes

before it hit, the sirens started going off. >> and you had a little signal, the snapping of your fingers to let everybody know to head down to the basement. >> yeah, i had told all my coaches, i said if you see my snap my fingers and point you know what to do, get those babies down to the basement as fast as you can. >> those precious babies, that one you have next to you. what was it like when the tornado hit? >> oh, well, we were all huddled really close together, the lights went out. then we heard a lot of screams from a bunch of little kids. it was pretty scary at that moment. we turned our cell phone flashlights on and tried to give the kids as much light as we could and we just all started praying, started singing praise and worship songs with the kids and trying to reassure them to let them know it's going to be okay. >> i love how you're reassuring jamari right now with the back rub. what was it like? i know it had to be scary in the basement. can you describe what it was like down there? >> it was very different from what we normally go through, but i knew that our coaches were guiding us to safety. >> and what was it like when you emerged from the basement, jennifer?

>> pretty much just lost it. couldn't believe what i was seeing. it was -- i mean, there was water pouring in down the stairs to the basement when we opened the door and i was devastated. >> rightfully so, and understandably so, and how about for you, jamari, and your friends? >> it was very scary because we have done this for almost all our life and to see it gone was just horrifying for us. >> jamari, i know and, for you, jennifer, the aim high academy so important for the community. i know you're thankful that everyone got out safe and sound and i'm sure you have plans to rebuild, don't you? >> we are so thankful and we are a nonprofit that this community built up and so we know this community is going to help us build again and so we thank god for that. >> well, you are in our thoughts and prayers, jennifer and jamari, thank you very much and all the best to you and everyone there going forward. you take care. >> thank you, robin. >> thank you.

>> you spent a lot of time there. they had a plan in place, they knew what to do. everyone reacted as they should. >> those teachers are always prepared. they take care of our children. >> now to amy with the other top developing stories. starting with new air strikes in the middle east. >> yeah, this is a major developing story overnight. saudi arabia has now launched air strikes against the rebels who have taken over parts of yemen and forced the american-backed president to flee the country. we are just getting the video of the damage from those air strikes. president obama has authorized logistical support for the saudi mission. iran calling the air strikes a dangerous step that will worsen the crisis. meanwhile, the u.s. is launching new air strikes in iraq to retake the city of tikrit from isis. an effort by iraqi forces to capture that city has failed. >> bowe bergdahl has been charged with desertion.

his lawyer is asking the public to withhold judgment until all facts are known. military experts doubt the sentence will be that severe. a public health emergency is being declared in indiana because of an outbreak of hiv. the governor says more than 70 cases were confirmed in one county and that number could rise dramatically. the outbreak is tied to heroin use and needle sharing. and finally, a pennsylvania man recovering from surgery opened a get well card from his father in new york. inside, there was a lottery ticket. when he scratched it, let's just say, joseph amorese suddenly felt a whole lot better. he won $7 million. how is that for a speedy recovery? he just had hernia surgery so he said i didn't jump up and down but my mind was jumping up and down. >> thanks for bringing that to

shocking development of the pilot. the co-pilot has been identified as 28-year-old andreas lubitz. the airline said he had undergone psychological examinations as part of his training. there were no red flags. in the audio files from the black box flight recorder he's heard breathing normally in the final moments of the flight. outside the cockpit the pilot can be heard trying to smash his way in. when a seven-digit code is entered the pilot can block entry from inside for up to five minutes. asked if this is a suicide attempt, the ceo didn't comment. the families of the victims are now being offered home stays with families here in the communities around the crash site we understand also that

good morning i'm kristen sze. developing news police officers throughout the bay area are wearing black on their badges in remembrance of an officer killed in the line of duty. police, family and strangers paid tribute to officer mike johnson as his body was moved to a funeral home. officer johnson was shot and killed tuesday in an ambush while responding to a 911 call about an armed man threatening suicide. he was the 12th police officer to die in the line of duty. let's get an update on the morning commute. >> we have had so many problems out there. a lot of congestion. very slow heading along in the westbound direction.

am. >> how are you enjoying the role? >> it's fantastic. hook is a riot. he's kind of sexy and nasty and just down and dirty and that's what's fun about him. it's a little bit of a departure from the traditional hook but i think it's fun to sort of break that mold and to have him be this sort of inspirational energy. basically borne of his imagination and the moment that it all comes together i sort of hand off my sword to him at one point and the first act finale and it's so fun. >> oh yeah you got some footage there. >> yeah. >> it's just a ball and akin to what you think is like the creative process where you discover the man you are. >> absolutely. >> so it goes downly for me as well. when you go back on broadway you get back -- you shave years off yourself because you're back in this thing you loved as a kid. >> that's the interesting thing, the endurance involved. you read this 250 times and

would run as you were singing the role. >> yeah, i really just got into this script and, you know had a lot of great ideas for it and wanted to bring, you know my own stamp on to this character. but, yeah i think being on broadway is such a workout and such a test of endurance, so i would run on the treadmill and outside and sing the songs and really just try to get that into my body. >> harvey weinstein, huge name in the movie world but he's done some projects on broadway. this is his biggest on broadway. how is he doing. >> a passion for him. i told harvey a year ago, i'm basically playing you, aren't it? j.m. barrie's plays and borrowed in my imagination the kind of energy it takes to be a producer like harvey is. but i know this is a real passion for him and i applaud him for it because he is -- he's ruthless and thorough. >> and smart. >> and leaves to stone unturned. if he thinks someone is lazy or
