good afternoon, everybody. >> we begin with a developing news in new york city, where an explosion sparked a massive seven alarm fire this afternoon. gutting four buildings, two of them collapsed. >> lana zach is at the jean with the latest just getting underway. >> the thick smoke is still hanging here. a lot of people are using masks to breathe 37 we are about a half a block away from the sight of the 7 alarm fire. making all of our eyes water. the fire has been contained, but the search for at least one person continues. >> the explosion and fire rock new york's east village.

the thick clouds of smoke could be seen for miles. the blast gutted a ground floor restaurant and collapsed ceiling. >> the face of the building blew off from the restaurant. >> allowing the flamts to jump to an adjacent building and five floors were quickly engulfed. >> just heard a boom, i came out and i saw the fire escape had come off the building and the whole bottom of the building came off to the sidewalk. >> n.j. burkett was right there when one building came down. >> now the building has collapsed, which is exactly what they expected that's why they backed everyone out of here. >> thun the second of the 100-year-old structures began to crumble under the force of the fire hose's water. >> there's a portion of the facade that is now coming down. >> at least 12 persons were reported injured, seven critically. people on the street were wearing masks to breathe, while search dogs on scene looked for survivors. city officials evacuated the area as the fire went to 7 alarms.

>> the force of the impact was so intense one neighbor said to me, it felt like a mack truck had driven right into her house. and they tonight don't know where they're going to be staying. live in new york's east village abc 7 news. >> scary scene for sure. german investigators are trying to figure out why a pilot deliberately flew his plane packed with people into the side of a mountain killing everyone. >> a facebook page included a photo of him. the page has now been deleted. marcy gonzalez has new information about what happened on that flight. >> in those chilling final moments before german wings flight 9525 slammed into the french alps, investigators say the cockpit voice reporter picked up the screams of passengers and the frantic thuds of the pilot pounding on the cockpit door. locked out intentionally investigators say by the co

pilot. who stayed silent as he hit the button to bring the plane into a nearly 10 minute long deadly descent. >> which can be analyzed as a -- willingness to destroy the aircraft. >> the cockpit voice recorder started out normally. he stepped out of the cockpit presumably to use the restroom. when he tried to return investigators say the 28-year-old co pilot did not respond and kept the door locked. he's heard breathing normally until the moment of impact. >> they're listening to the breathing and considering the pattern they're hearing is consistent with somebody who is conscious conscious, alert and doing something that they intend to do. >> a horrifying realization for the families of the 149 other people who were on board. the remains are still being recovered today.

among them three americans, 37-year-old robert oliver as well as yvonne and emily selky a mother and daughter from virginia. investigators are still trying to physician out the co pilot's moat everyone, saying he passed a psychological exam and had no links to terrorism. marcy gonzalez, abc news, new york. >> back in the bay area, an 11-year-old boy is in an east bay hospital after a classmate stabbed him in the back with a knife during gym class. it happened this morning at a locker room at martinez junior high school. the helicopter took that boy away, he is expected to be okay. police arrested a 13-year-old student on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. investigators say the attack was unprovoked. the school released a statement saying all other students are safe. the man who ambushed and killed the san jose police officer tuesday night did not shoot himself afterwards. >> a fellow police officer who returned fire after officer chris johnson went down killed the gunman identified as scott

dunham. vick lee live in san jose with the latest. vic? >> it turns out as you said that other officers standing close to him shot and killed scott dunham. here's the mayor. >> the officers who were there on the scene behaved very courageously, amid the shooting, and the actions of at least one officer may have saved several more lives. >> the mayor deferred to the police department to release details but our sources tell abc 7 news the officer who shot scott dunham is a veteran of the department and he stood his ground during the exchange of gunfire shooting scott dunham in the eye. this morning another 911 call in east san jose resulting in the arrest of one person. police responded to a report of domestic violence and possible burglary in progress. >> the victim of the rp who called said that her ex-boyfriend, the father of her

children had broken into her house last night. >> a confrontation ensued. the woman told the dispatcher her ex-boyfriend had beaten her. what afollowed was a heavy police response. a bear cat and more than a dozen patrol cars plus the s.w.a.t. team. on everyone's minds the fatal shooting of michael johnson tuesday night. >> it's going to be in the back of our minds, so we want to make sure that we do things you know thoroughly and come to a peaceful resolution. >> one of the supervisors had worked with officer johnson who was very much in his thoughts. >> in the back of your head -- we all have families and wives, kids. you're always thinking about that. >> the mayor has asked for more money to buy breast plates helmets and plates for patrol cars tragically, ironic city council passed his budget request the day officer johnson was shot to death. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> the death of officer johnson has affected so many people more

it's 7 degrees warmer right now at sfo than it was at this time yesterday. 11 degrees warmer than at this hour yesterday. and san jose, let's take a look at high temperatures so far including our records. san jose has reached 85 degrees. that's a new record high for this date in san jose. gilroy has tied his record high for the date. as you can see we have low to mid-80s in many inland locations. looking toward mt. diablo there's our first forecast mainly clear early this evening, we'll see areas of fog developing over the coast. it will be cooler along the coast and around the bay tomorrow with highs getting only up to the low 80s inland and even cooler than that near the bay and coast. we have more record warm th. i'll have the accuweather 7-day forecast later. >> now to the latest on the vallejo woman police say

kidnapped with the help of her boyfriend. >> they say police have the whole thing wrong and their client is a victim. laura anthony is following this latest twist. this is a story that gets stranger and stranger every day. >> that's right, larry. abc news has confirmed that denise is now back in vallejo inside police headquarters here, being interviewed or at least talking with investigators, this comes one day after she was discovered safe in southern california. in the meantime, her boyfriend's attorneys are speaking out about police statements. they say make him look like a liar. >> we have not seen evidence yet that this was some type of hoax. >> the attorneys for denise's boyfriend came out on the attack accusing vallejo police and the fbi of mismanaging the case that they maintain was husband kins kidnap from quinn's home early monday. >> he was not only bound up he was drugged.

and one of the things that he did voluntarily was give a blood test so the police could confirm that the kidnappers drugged him. >> our client is suffering tremendously. he's very worried about denise huskins. >> police stated they had zero evidence that huskins was kidnapped. and went so far as to say they believed the whole story was fabricated. >> the fact that we've wasted all of these resources for really nothing is upsetting. >> the revelations come after an exhaustive search for huskins who turned up unharmed yesterday at her father's home in hunting ton beach. this morning abc 7 news spoke with jeff cane by phone. >> you go on the internet, people want their heads they think that they've wasted all these public resources and the truth is just the opposite. >> they could face state or

has been quietly testing out drone aircrafts that can beam internet access from the sky. he believes the unmanned craft can help connect 10% of the world living in remote areas without any existing internet. the final design will have the wing span of a passenger plane but light like a car. facebook hopes to roll out these planes over the next few years. >> saying ahh may be beneficial to your health. wall greens is changing the way customers are looking at the checkout line. >> the lobo risk will allow you to determine your risk of a heart attack, simply by inputting a few simple things. your age, gender blood pressure cholesterol. whether you have diabetes or smoke in the country you live in will all tell your chances of dying from a heart attack in the next 10 years. they hope to have their own interactive website where individuals can look up their risk. wall greens will no longer require its cashiers to send the

to paraphrase bruce springsteen, crews are bringing on the wrecking ball today at the stick, as you can see from sky seven hd. a large chunk of the stadium's east side is now gone. they are tearing it down one section at a time. the goal is the complete demolition by the end of the month. a shopping center hotel and housing will go up in its place.

developing news as we come up on 4:30 here a fire and explosion leveled part of a building in new york city today. a second billing was so damaged it will probably have to come down. at least a dozen people were injured. the fire started with a blast that appears to be a gas explosion. construction crews were working in the building at the time. >> people around the bay area are paying tribute to michael johnson, the san jose police officer who was killed in the line of duty on tuesday. david louie tweeted this picture

as the santa cruz police chief paid respect to the memorial for officer johnson. shocking revelations out of the sheriff's county sheriff's department today. the public defender says county jail inmates forced by duedies to fight gladiator style. that is it just the beginning, the other accusations are coming up in half an hour on abc 7 news at 5:00. >> thank you larry. new at 4:30 the ceo of san francisco based sales force fired back this afternoon. for refusing to offer service to gay and lesbian customers. we're cancelling all programs to require our customers to travel to indiana to face discrimination. they haven't considered moving all of its operations out of the state last year they acquired a company in indianapolis.

the ceo is calling on other tech executives and industry leaders to take a stand. they need to pay attention to the impact on the new law of employees and customers. the measure mike pence signed today allows businesses to turn away gay and lesbian customers. the law protects businesses for having to provide services for things they don't support such as same sex marriage. san francisco mayor ed lee says he's banning official city travel to indiana, a statement he said san francisco taxpayers will not subsidize legally sanctioned discrimination against lesbian, bisexual and transgender people by the state of indiana. also in indiana today, the governor declared a public health emergency for a county battling what's believed to be the worst hiv outbreak in the state's history. 79 cases have been confirmed in scott county. he expects the number to go up. every confirmed case has been related to iv drug use.

you can hear him tentatively walking away. they've already tagged this bear several times before. officers managed to tranquilize the 175 pound bear in a large trap yesterday. this may have been the same bear that was spotted roaming in that area the past couple days. >> i went to the gym, came back home, didn't notice it so i think it was up there the whole time. >> the bear fell from the tree we caught it with our tarps and gently set it do the ground and it couldn't -- i don't know how it could have gotten any better. >> great save right there. >> wildlife officials say the bear is in good health and napped for 7 hours after getting tranquilized. she was released in a remote wooded location. and hopefully will not be bothering anybody again. traffic is moving on eastbound 580 in livermore this afternoon. after an accident during the morning commute shut down all lanes. sky 7 hd was over the scene just after 6:30, where a car hit a

man the chp says the man got out of his car because it broke down. a helicopter rushed him to a hospital. all lanes reopened just after 7:00 a.m., no word on the man's condition. a grizzly discovery for a san francisco firefighter. they found a body inside a camper which was gutted by fire on ingles street this morning in the bay view district. this video was taken by sky 7 hd investigators are trying to determine if foul play was involved. the sheriff's office believes an escaped jail inmate is now out of the san jose area. deputies just arrested john carter's brother in low die on suspicion of helping with carter's escape. general carter overpowered a sheriff's deputy nearly three weeks ago. the accused child molester ran away while in shackles. the san francisco based twitter gets into the streaming video business. first tragedy in texas, the falling debris that's creating

commuter chaos in the lone star state today. i'm spencer christian from our east bay hills camera. looks like clear skies all over the bay area, but the ones we had today will not be with us tomorrow. the accu what are forecast coming up. at 4:36 another look at the afternoon commute. this is 101 southbound backed up in san jose people in the car pool lanes on the left side there are moving nicely. northbound is much better and 880 is looking decent over the top.

tragedy on a texas highway, an oversized tractor-trailer ran into an overpass that was under construction. it knocked several beams down on to the highway below killing a person and injuring three others. this happened on i-35 about 40 miles north of austin. authorities say the person who died was in a pickup truck driving under the breath when those beams came crashing down. let's take a look at our traffic now with our 360 camera. >> that's right our 360 camera now on 24 approaching the tennell, as we showed you earlier, it was starting to slow down, you can see all the cars here on the roadway it's slowing down as they approach the tunnel however in the other direction you can see cars are going pretty freely at this time, the westbound traffic moving right now, but you can see traffic is backing up behind us as well on 24 eastbound.

let's get to spencer you can tell it's really nice outside today, and really warm too. >> we had record warmth today. here's a view looking out across our rooftop camera. 88 in gilroy all new record highs for this date. it was warm in many other locations as well. those are the only three records we have so far. here's live doppler 7 ld a little fog coming up to the coast to our north. it will continue to slide down the coastline. tomorrow, look for a mainly dry day. cold in the upper midwest. it will be rainy along the atlantic coast in california tomorrow across the state. we'll see mainly sunny skies, warm to hot conditions, look for a high of 91 in fresno tomorrow. 99 in palm springs. here in the bay area we'll have a pleasant day, it will be a bit cooler in most locations than today. fog will be back at the coast. cooling sea breeze.

we'll see some low 70s around the bay and upper 70s inland. not many locations will reach 80 tomorrow. quite a pleasant cooldown tomorrow for us. for the week ahead, we'll use san jose as our indicator, notice over the next couple days, the cooler pattern friday and saturday. temperatures will bounce back into the low 80s, downtown san jose on sunday and monday. most inland locations will see over the next several days. temperatures will moderate a bit going into next week. so lovely weather ahead wish i could promise you some rain. but i can't. >> thanks, spencer. >> cleanup operations are underway in oklahoma after multiple tornados tore through the state last evening. at least one person was killed 20 others injured, four seriously, several homes and businesses were damaged in the cities of tulsa and moore. some 20,000 people are still without power. moore you'll recall is the same city that was devastated by a

be shared on twitter as a way to spread the word. the free app is only available for iphones for now. it provides immediate competition to a similar streaming app. drivers and passengers are invited to share personal details with each other. including hometown favorite music and a short bio. sharing any information is completely optional. but believes the feature will allow drivers and passengers to bond by sharing fun facts about themselves and discover mutual friends and interest. the new feature will launch next week. a struggling store in the east bay scheduled to close this saturday. >> now children are taking matters into their own hands. donating their own money to keep business open. lilian kim has the story.

point, police have not evacuated that area, they do not believe others are in danger. >> break news 24/7 by following us on twitter at abc 7 news bay area. good evening i'm dan ashley. >> now to our other top story there are explosive allegations of abuse at one of san francisco's county jails. inmates say they have been forced to fight each other while deputies gamble on the outcome. carolyn tyler is in the newsroom with the story. >> it was back on march 12th that the public defender's office learned of these accusations, the inmates that blew the whistle have been transferred, and the deputies who have been accused have been reassigned. up onned 7th floor san francisco's public defender says, inmates have been forced into gladiator style fights. >> i can only describe this as an outrageously sadistic scenario that sounds like it's out of the game of thrones.

>> this inmate named four sheriff's deputies and said the ring leader forced him to fight twice in recent days. >> going to beat me up cut me deputies were gambling. the other inmate named stanley harris tells of the deputies egging him on. >> get him, get him, get him. >> harris also told attorneys he was forced to do push-ups to train for the fight. it's not clear how long this activity has been going on. but multiple investigations are getting underway. >> it is impossible for just two or three or even four deputies to commandeer the jail in stage fights without other deputies being aware of it.
