gratefulness. san jose residents honor a fallen police officer during two different vigils. san jose police officer michael johnson died after being shot after responding to a call on tuesday evening. janet tells you more about last night's tributes for johnson. >> doze everything of people turned out to honor officer michael johnson a few steps from where he was killed. the city council members mayor and police chief were also in attendance. they shared a few words. afterwards this woman shook hands with the officers. she is the shooter's niece. the man who shot and killed officer johnson. >> we just want the community to know that we do care and we are sorry. >> golart his her uncle was funny and loving but he also struggled with mental illness and copd. on tuesday night he was on the verge of not only taking his life but his aunt's, as well. he took not only his life but he also considered of taking his wife's life.

>> they said it means a lot for so many to show solidarity at a time they need it most. >> it helps all of us to get through the process of grieving and coping with the loss of an officer who was doing his job. >> it shows everyone that officers are here to help us and to protect us. he gave his life. >> here at city hall, hundreds turned out for the second vigil of the night as people paid their respects. the vigil was another reminder to thank those who serve every day. >> it's a little overwhelming in the sense that there are a lot of people out there that really do care about us. >> and donations have been pouring in for johnson's family. in the meantime preparations are underway for both johnson and dunham for funerals. in san jose, abc7 news. >> the memorial service for officer johnson will be held next thursday at 11:00 p.m.

at the sap center in san jose. we will provide live coverage and will stream it online at abc7 news.com. communication equipment slowed to a crawl during the response to officer johnson's shooting. the department's mobile computer network got bogged down because of the increased communication. officers' outdated computers couldn't keep up, forcing them to ditch the compute speakers use police radios as well. >> the computers unable us to communicate in mass. radio systems can only allow one person to talk at once. when there's hundreds on the same radio channel, certainly that's not a possibility. >> officers say it is an ongoing problem. it even happened again yesterday. the department plans to replace the mobile computer network sometime this year. 6:05 is our time. a man is dead after getting hit by a car in martinez. the clash happened just before 8:30 last night south of highway 4. investigators are trying to figure out how it happened. the car actually ended up on the median.

the driver is cooperating with the police and has not been cited. a landslide courtroom victory for a silicon valley venture capital giant. a san francisco jury rejected claims by former executive ellen pau against her one-time employer. abc7 reporter tiffany wilson explains. >> three years of preparation five weeks of trial and two days of jury deliberations resulted in a resounding loss for ellen pao. but she did not sound defeated after the verdict was read >> i have told my story and thousands of people have heard it. if i have helped to level the playing field for women and minorities and venture capitals, then the battle was worth it. >> in all four counts they found the venture capital firm parker klineer didn't etallate against pau. >> it never occurred to me they would find either discrimination or retaliation, and i'm glad to have been proven right about

ellen should be commended. she remained brave under very intense public scrutiny. now companies will think twice about leaving their postings. >> the attorney specializes and discrimination cases. she believes it is set a precedent for future legal cases involving women's rights in the workplace. she points to new lawsuits already filed against twitter and facebook. pau took to twitter soon after the decision came down. she posted a response, over nine tweets. the first saying simply "thank you, world." she went on to write "hopefully my case will have them level the playing field for everyone, including women and minorities i. >> although they lost her case many are thanking her to shine a light on the issue. thousands use the #thank you ellen pao.

calls for change in berkeley. this comes after homeless people and their advocates protested in the streets. their anger stems from accusations two city ambassadors abused homeless men they were hired to assist. alan wang has more. >> this home video is about their claim it reveals the routine harassment and physical abuse by the berkeley ambassadors. >> it's a conflict. if they report this person assaulted me, they are likely to believe the ambassador. >> the victims were arrested for assault. but after this video emerged and jeffrey bailey was fired and his partner was suspended. one problem is the lack of house for the homeless. this man said he's been on a waiting list for two years. >> how do they expect us to magically disappear while we wait and they attack and assault us when we have nowhere to go. meanwhile business owners are pressuring the city to stop the homeless from chasing away their

>> we are learning more this morning about the man who deliberately crashed a passenger jet into a french mountain tuesday, killing himself and 149 other people. investigators found clues in the co-pilots home, including prescriptions and a note from his doctor saying he was too sick to work. abc news chief correspondent terry moran has the latest. >> he was an avid runner, the picture of health and youth. but investigators say he had a secret that turned homicidal. they are scrutinizing his last 24 hours. on the day of the crash he left his apartment in düsseldorf. neighbors say he shared it with a girlfriend. you see the two names on the buzzer. he went to the airport in the morning and threw to barcelona in the same plane he was crash on the return flight over the same mountains. police searching the apartment again after they found a torn-up note from a doctor determining on the day of the crash andreas lubitz was too sick to work.

and prescriptions for medications also trashed. that note never delivered to the airline. he hid his illness from his employer and colleagues. an unconfirmed report in the wall street journal saying he was seeing a psychologist. he apparently struggled for years. back in 2009 as a flight student he interrupted his training for an extended period. the media reporting he suffered or burning. but people who knew him saw no warning signs. >> if you are flying you need to have some minimum intelligence some minimum respect for yourself, some minimum respect for others. >> these are the gliders of the local flight clubs. they are packed up for winter but it was here that andreas lubitz first discovered his love of flying. >> the club took those gliders on trips.

lubitz reportedly came to these same mountains where he would have soared alone, just a few miles from where years later he crashed flight 9525. >> the associated press is saying his file included a note that said the pilot required quote, specific regular medical examination. no word on a reason. abc news, germany. >> italy's high court has overturned the murder conviction of amanda knox. it ends the ongoing court saga for the u.s. citizen accused of killing her college roommates. >> i'm incredibly grateful for what has happened, for the justice i have received. meredith was my friend and she deserved so much in this life. i'm the lucky one. >> knox has been found guilty of murder twice. each time it was overturned. this is the final decision in the case because italy's supreme court did not order another trial.

and liftoff. the year in space starts now. >> and with that, a history-making mission is underway this morning. a russian and an american took off to spend a year in space. the hatch opened and they entered the international space station 8 hours after blasting off yesterday. their 342-day stay is aimed at finding out all the human body holds up in space to prepare for a future journey to mars >> was it a hoax or not? they disagree. a 29-year-old woman disappeared on monday and turned up in southern california wednesday. huskins' attorney said she was the victim of a violent crime and will do anything to clear her name. police accuse huskins and her boyfriend of orchestrating the

hoax and getting valuable resources from the community. the pair could face criminal charges. the boyfriend's attorney also said the kidnapping did happen. 6:16 is the time. a possible cheating scandal at stanford university. an investigation into what officials are calling an unusual number of allegations of academic dishonesty. as many as 20% of students in an introductory course may have cheated during the winter quarter. the information came to light in a letter sent to faculty members this week. penalties for violating stanford's honesty code includes suspension and community service. >> people from all 50 states and 40 countries around the world are in the south bay this weekend for the biggest event in pro wrestling. wrestlingmania. 730,000 fans are expected to pack levi's stadium yesterday afternoon. yesterday they gather to swap stories and buy souvenirs as part of fan fest. the wwe said wrestlemania generated more than $140 million

it was robust for much of the north bay, parts of the east bay. our inland valleys cooled down just a little. and today we will see a bits of a reversal with the winds. 45 in fairfield. it's 51 livermore. and santa rosa low 40s. the upper elevations will see the offshore push. still breezy winds at the coast. but this morning with the northerly winds scouring the clouds out, we are looking at a cooler start. 7 degrees cooler in napa. it's 5 degrees cooler in morning compared to yesterday in san jose and mountain view. 3 degrees of cooling in our inland valleys. at the airport shouldn't see any problems. we will see temperatures today in the upper 60s down around sfo. it should be clear for tomorrow morning, as well. we've got the marathon, looking at sunny averages and the warmup today translates into even warmer temperatures tomorrow. with some changes on the way for the beginning of the week. so here's the front. the culprit that is with us for today allowing for the clouds.

this budget that the republicanss revealed last week would make it harder, not easier to crack down on financial fraud and abuse. >> republicans control both houses on capitol hill. we want to balance the budget by cutting some benefit programs. they will aim at hammering out possible spending plans when they return from recess. governor jerry brown has signed off on a brought relief package. he tweeted this photo of him signing the package into law yesterday. legislators approved the plan earlier this week. two-thirds of the money goes to flood protection and critics say it won't solve the drought. he said it's only a bill on the need to conserve water. he's calling on all californians to reduce their water use by 20%. police of searching for two people still missing after an apparent gas line explosion leveled three buildings in new york city. officials say canines will be used today to go through the rubble. investigators believe the

explosion with plumbing and gas work inside a build wags to -- inside a building was to blame for thursday's blast that injured 22 people four critically. imagine going through the adoption process, getting very close to finding a child and then having your hopes disappear. that's what happened to several would-be parents who put their trust in an adoption agency, only to learn that it has closed without notice. abc7 news reporter wayne freedman met with one of those parents and has their story. >> in san leandro looks are deceiving at the black adoption and research center. it has the adoption and deals and after 32 years of placing minority children it has no staff. and would-be clients, for them there's no hope. >> just heartbreak. tears. and questions that no one is willing to answer. >> for a year she and her husband had gone through qualification hoping to adopt. as part of the process they made this book filled with photos. the agency under it in the mail along with documents and this

let we're a generic "deer family" saltation. it said only the black adoption and research center was closing with no explanation and no offer of future help. >> why didn't you try to bridge us or have a call with us? communicate with us and let us know months ago that we are in trouble or we are going to close. let us have the opportunity to go to another agency. >> that letter was signed by board chairman barbara parker, who also serves as the oakland city attorney. she would not comment about this closer, but did issue a statement that reads, in part, "a small number of families or -- are in the process of applying for adoption. we understand this difficult for them. this may make it more difficult, however, for those families the process can be continued with another agency." meanwhile, an anonymous sort said they ran out of money and donations because few people want to adopt older children or siblings. but this woman and her husband did, which hurts even more.

>> i know there was a child or a sibling group out there that is now not going to get a placement. >> in san francisco, wayne freedman, abc7 news. today happens to be moving day for one of san francisco's district police station. southern station has been located in the hall of justice lobby for more than 50 years. today southern district officers will move to the new public safety building south of at&t park. the new facility in mission bay will also have the sfpd new headquarters. a new fire station, station 4 opens for business on monday. new stations will serve the rapidly-expanding mission bay area. calling all nurses. san francisco general hospital will hold a job fair today hoping to fill positions when its new medical center opens in december. the general runs the only trauma center for northern san francisco and northern san mateo county. every year it serves

patients, regardless of their ability to pavement today's job fair will take place in two sessions. the first runs from 9:30 to 12:30 and the second from 1:30 to 4:30. a struggling store in the east bay is scheduled to close today. but now children are taking matters into their own tiny hands, donating their own money to help keep the business open. 100,000 abc7 reporter lilian kim has the story. >> should i do that? >> the lee children came to the golden apple not to shop, but to give their money away. >> we really love the golden apple, and it's so nice because i had my birthday there. >> the golded apple learning center has been selling toys and teaching material in pleasanton for 36 years. since word got out it was closing, the owner said money has been trickling in. mostly from kids taking cash right out of their piggy bank to try to keep the store open. >> i didn't know if i should buy lunch or what i should do with it so i decided let's see if we can gather up enough money to open up again. >> he has since launched an online campaign. the goal is to raise $78,000

called alternative spring break. the students will be renovating the backyard of the san jose day nursery. the program is organized by united way. >> being a student is so stressful a lot of the students here are working full time, as well as balancing school. we know their time is very precious. and for them to actually say i want to give my time back, and volunteer with united way, it's just a great thing. >> the nursery provides early childhood education for children from low-income families. 6:37 is our time. golden gate bridge and other world landmarks will go bark tonight in support of earth hour. you will see lights on the upper part of the bridge. the cables and towers go dark between 8:30 and 9:30 tonight. the lights along the roadway will remain on as usual. the world wildlife fund organizes earth hour as a way to bring attention to climate change.

>> a live look outside from our kgo roof camera. what a beautiful shot. warm temperatures expected to the but how long will it last? lisa argen lets us know coming up in a little bit. the three major credit reporting bureaus have agreed to change their ways. they are supposed to be more consumer friendly, but will they be? michael finney has been looking into that and has details. >> there were two lisa marie allens. our lisa in fremont, california and lisa marie allen in texas. and they were sharing the same credit report. our lisa marie tried to get things fixed, but couldn't get credit agencies to work with her. >> they would ask for my credit report. so i would go online and try to pull -- >> wait a second. a credit reporting agency asked you for a credit report? >> yes. they told me through a letter -- >> i'm laughing with you, not at

you. >> i know, it's absurd. it's absolutely absurd. >> she eventually went to attorney mark anderson, who got the two reports untangled and a settlement. as it turns out, lisa marie was not the only one who couldn't get her credit report fixed on her own. this is a settlement between the new york attorney general and the major credit reporting bureaus. they promise to be more consumer friendly and have highly trained employees available to handle major issues like lisa marie's. >> a better trained employee there would have fixed the problem. >> that's the good news. the bad? mark said it's too early to say if it will really work for consumers. >> the devil is in the details. it's fine for them to sign an agreement saying we are going to enhance our system. by the way, they are going to take six months to a year to implement it.

to reports. in terms of weather let's bring in our meteorologist lisa argen. a nice weekend for families heading out to enjoy the sunshine and the warm temperatures. >> yeah, there was just a puff of fog by the golden gate. we had a little bit of drizzle as well. that's exciting. that was up in santa rosa. more or less everyone is warming up today. and i say that because the coast will still be at the 60s. warmer than yesterday. 59 here as the on shore flow really brought the cool-down. this morning you see a little bit of cloud cover here. we had a few areas of drizzle up to the north. take a look at what the clouds have revealed this morning with the sun coming up just after 7:00. it's a pretty shot from our exploratorium camera. 62 san carlos, san francisco sitting in the low 50s. so no delays expected at the airports. and although it's a cooler morning, the afternoon will be

warmer. so we are looking at that offshore flow in the upper elevation toss warm us up. this is lake tahoe. maybe you don't notice because the lack of snow. kind. sad but we are looking at a pretty sunrise with upper 60s today. it's in the 30s right now in truckee. 35 in petaluma and 52 concord. it's cooled off a few degrees in livermore at 48 degrees. in napa, mountain view and san jose a couple degrees carolina along the coast. here's mt. tam. higher elevations, a little bit of a wind and we are looking at that wind to warm us up today overall. but the coast will be cool. sunshine everywhere the next couple of days. if you want to head to the beach, bring the sweatshirt but it will be sunny. the clear skies, sunny days the warmer weekend and looking at a slight cool down coming our way the beginning of next week. can we get any rain in here

though in no, doesn't look like it. here's the somewhat dry front that is passed lou. we are looking at high pressure to keep us mild to warm for the next several days. still above normal. no records, but we will be looking at the temperatures coming up and down a bit. we will take oakland, for example. today warmer at 74. your sunday, 677. here comes the weak front dropping temperatures into the low 70s. the coolest day on wednesday. still above average. then we rebound again on thursday and friday. san francisco with 59 yesterday. today about 70. a few degrees warmer tomorrow with no fog. and the fog comes back into play by late monday. cooling us off and still above average with temperatures climbing back up on thursday and friday. so we will look for the cool-down all the way down south. they have dense fog from l. a. x. to san diego. 81 today.
