>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday march 29th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. another hour until sunrise. starting out with cool conditions around the bay. there's a little bit of patchy fog along the coast. most of it is down around monterey and salinas. we have a few high clouds that will be drifting over the bay today. nothing to inhibit all that warming that's headed our way today for the warmest day out of the next 7. 51 hayward and mountain view, as

well as san jose right now. cool spot up in the north bay, napa 41. how about 39 in petaluma. so the dewpoints are lower temperatures a few degrees cooler but the highs today even warmer. we are talking about 80s and still the 60s at the coast. i'll have the range for you, the particular temperatures in your neighborhood coming up. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news comes from almeda county where the chp is looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed a pedestrian on the freeway. the collision happened just after midnight on eastbound 580 on the hayward san leandro border. officers say the person was hit in the number two lane. no specifics on cart or the victim. eastbound lanes were shut down between 150th and 164th avenue for two and a half hours, but the lanes are reopened. there's more backlash from

bay area business leaders against indiana controversial religious freedom restoration act. opponents say the legislation signed last week by indiana's governor promotes discrimination against gays and lesbians. supporters say that's not the case, it will only limit laws that exercise a person's free exercise of religion. both sides agree the courts will have the final word. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson has the bay area business reaction to indiana's move. >> i think that's horrid. >> i think it's crazy and stupid. >> its 2015. they should know better. >> it is uniting people with folks living in the castro. they say the new indiana law will legalize discrimination against gays. >> i think we should use our economic power. gist boycott the state. >> numerous business leaders

agree. some halted a major expansion project. yelp posted a blog saying it won't create business in any state that encourages discrimination. the ncaa based in indianapolis and host to the final four next week say they are concerned. and both the nba and wnba emphasize their policies of inclusion. >> i think it comes out as they will be recognized as bigot. so they are kind of defeating their own purpose. with the backlash the governor said he will support new legislation to clarify the law. he added the blow back against the religion freedom restoration act is driven by misinformation. it remains to be seen if there will be a clarification that will ease the economic effects for indiana. >> i wouldn't spin my money in indiana >> i was going to go to a meeting there next month, and i'm not going to go. >> in defense of the legislation, governor pence

noted 19 other states and the federal government have adopted laws similar to indiana's. in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> san francisco mayor ed lee has already banned all official city travel to indiana to protest the new law 1. >> if hayward police are looking for a man who tried kidnapping a teenage girl friday afternoon at gunpoint. the 16-year-old was walking home from high ward high school when she was grabbed by a man, pulled into the back seat of his car. he pointed a gun at her, but she thought him and got away. >> i keep my eyes on cars and people who look suspicious. i turn them in and call them. better to be safe than sorry. >> the girl gave police enough info for this sketch. a hispanic or east indian man in his mid-20s. 5'7" with a short beard and wearing a hoodie. police are investigating whether he's the same suspect in two other recent kidnapping attempts.

investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire at a walmart store in san leandro. the two-alarm fired started after 7:30 last night in the kitchen of macdonald's on davis street. that was inside walmart. the sprinkler was activated and the fire was knocked down by. about 10% of the store was damaged by water from the sprinkler system. no one was injured and no word whether the store will reopen today. san francisco police are investigating a fatal shooting near a playground at a local park. police say the man was found with several gunshot wounds at crocker amazon park last night. that's near geneva avenue. he died at the hospital. no arrests have been made. in vallejo a man was found critically wounded in the laundry room of an apartment building yesterday evening. it happened at a complex on

hillborn avenue. the victim was shot multiple times, once in the head. he was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. a motorcyclist was killed in a crash in santa rosa yesterday afternoon. the highway patrol said a car turned left directly into the path of at motorcycle carrying two people. the motorcyclist died and his passenger suffered critical injuries. a passenger in the car was also injured. new calls are going out for rent control on the peninsula. >> someone has lived here for 20 years and then is being kicked out and has no affordable choice in this community. that is not justice. >> members of the st. matthew catholic church held a rally and march last night protesting rising months. many working families are struggling or being priced out of their homes. they are asking officials to put

in rent control throughout the county. >> one family down the street received a rent increase from 1,000 to $1,700 so right now the family is working extra hours. >> the county board of supervisors talked about rent control last week, but no action has been taken. now to a dramatic new video of a cliff rescue. yesterday morning the chp sent a helicopter was sent to rescue a man stranded in yosemite park. kevin and his friends took a shortcut on the trail friday night. they made it out but one got stuck and spent the night at the edge of a 320-foot cliff. you can see the relief on his face after that rescue. he had built a fire to survive the night. san francisco's newest police station is dedicateed to going green. it opened add third and southern base station in mission bay yesterday. it has active child beams to help with heating and cooling.

it can operate up to 96 hours off the grid after a major disaster. bart is giving people early warnings about big delays starting a week from today when they will start replacing track in oakland. the agency needs to replace 3,000 feet of worn rail, 1,000 aging wooden ties between two stations and they will do it over the course of 11 spring and summer weekends. it willness ses state stopping service while the work is being done. >> if you have an alternative, use that alternatives on the weekends we have the work going on. get a ride from a friend, ride your bicycle whatever, but we have the bus service that will be providing trips for free between those two stations. >> bart said the disruptions will be planned around events at

the stadiums. wrestlemania 31 is just hours away at levi's stadium. last night some very big men with some very big names were inducted at the wwe hall of fame. they range from local legends to a politician. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has more. >> from the bay area! [cheers and applause] >> the bay area is shining during wrestlingmania 31. hall of fame ceremony honored san francisco native rikishi. >> now for me this dream is reality. >> ten big names were inducted. >> not in my wildest dreams did i ever think i would ever be inducted in this hall of fame. >> 70,000 to 100,000 people are in the south bay for the four-day long event with the main event at levi's stadium. fans from all 50 states and 40 countries are in town right now. >> we try to get here a few days early to see the sites and everything else and everything

else is pretty much dedicated to wrestling. >> this 21-year-old saved all year long for his trip. he's not alone. wrestlemania is bringing a big financial boost to the entire region. in santa clara, 100% of hotels have no vacancies while here in san jose 90% of hotels are sold out. an estimated $100 million will be spent in the area during the event. santa clara's mayor is also using this chance to prep for the super bowl next year. >> this will give us an opportunity to refine our management and transportation plans even further. city leaders are focusing on transportation and security plans. >> lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> yeah, that's the way to do it to get ready for super^bowl 50. that's going to be quite the challenge. the weather not so challenging today really. >> if you are looking for rain, yes. we are looking at some cooler temperatures on the horizon.

pope francis has ushered in holy week in front of thousands of worshipers in st. peter's square. this is palm sunday for the faithful. it marks the crucifixion of jesus. pope francis paid tribute to those who were killed for their faith today, a reference to the islamic militants. following mass the pope blessed the crowd while being driven through st. peter's. on friday he will lead the way of the cross service at the coliseum. next sunday one million people are expected to flood st. peter's square for easter. nearly two dozen people are recovering after a commuter train hit a car in los angeles yesterday. two cars derailed.

our abc news reporter has the details. >> looks like two cars derailed. >> a chilling train-car crash in los angeles. adding to a string of such collision across the u.s. in recent weeks. this time a commuter trained slammed into a car making an improper turn at a crossing in front university of southern california. the impact all but demolished the silver hyundai. miraculously, the driver was still alive. >> we used the jaws of life to extricate the single driver in the car. >> and also injured the train operator and 19 passengers. jolted from their seats of the train when it came to a sudden stop and the first two trains jumped the tracks. >> we would classify them as walking wound thed, minor injuries. >> this is the seventh train-car clash in the last two months. six people died in february when a train slammed into an s.u.v. at a new york crossing and the operator of another commuter train in southern california was killed last month when a driver got

stuck on the tracks. abc news, new york. an oakland artist who died in an apartment fire last weekend is being remembered by friends and family. daniel moe thomas created art using secondhand objects he collected. yesterday abc7 news was there as many gathered to remember thomas and put up his art for display at the mcloughlin gallery in san francisco. >> i think although he was in an emerging state of his career, he had a lot of important significant things to say about the art community. >> another celebration of thomas life will be held today at classic cars west in oakland not far from where he lived. hundreds came together at fort mason last night to help families cope with childhood cancer.

the 21st annual art-inspiring gala benefits children with cancer. it gives children with cancer an opportunity to attend an camp adventure. cheryl jennings was there to be part of the fundraiser. abc7 has been a long time supporter of the camp. >> the bishop o'dowd boys basketball team has won the state championship after a nail biting finish. last night there was the winning free throw in overtime to give the oakland boys a 65-64 victory over southern california's mater dei high school. the bishop dowd girls won division 3 on friday. and a group from san jose also won yesterday 53-31. >> in about 15 minutes the half-marathon will be off and running in san francisco. it begins at 6:30 at the great highway and fulton streets.

it winds along the coast and ends at the civic plaza. thousands of people are expected to participate in the race. there are street closers. you are looking at scenes from last year. organizers this year have set a strict 2 1/2 hour time limit for the runners to finish and the roads will reopen at 10:00. so it's good to have it early when the weather is cool because it's really going to heat up today, lisa. >> a little bit cooler this morning than yesterday in spots. that puts san francisco in the low 50s right now. live doppler 7hd tracking fog along the central coast. we will see a few high clouds today streaming by. sunrise is at 7:00. and it sets just before 7:30. so almost 12 hours 30 minutes of day light. and a warmer day today pretty much for everyone. unless you are right along the coast, half moon bay pacifica, point reyes. it will be in the 60s. here's a look from our

exploratorium camera where it looks pretty nice. we have fog around half moon bay. 50 oakland, 52 in the city with 48 in morgan hill, and it's cooler along the coast. as much as 10 11 degrees cooler. dewpoints are lower so starting out for most of you slightly cooler but by the afternoon most will be warmer. pelt aluminumma dropped down to 39 degrees. 51 concord and 48 livermore. low 40s napa and santa rosa. average highs mid-and upper 60s this time of year. we've been nowhere near that all winter long and all springtime long. we are starting out with the cooler temperatures, for the most part, around the bay. the coast hayward and livermore. so get set for a summer-like afternoon. emeryville right now in the 40s and 50s from oakland to emeryville and a little warmer today around the bay with mid-70s by about 3:00 this afternoon. we will see the temperatures come down tomorrow as much as 10 degrees in response to a system that will bring rain to

the pacific northwest. it won't be near us but today the warmest day by far with temperatures well up into the upper 70s and low 80s. it's that system that will be sinking south and bringing the numbers down kind of dramatically tomorrow. so today in the 80s for san jose. average high upper 60s. and then you lose about three, four degrees. but other cities will see more of a dramatic drop. and you will notice by tuesday and wednesday we are just at about 730 crows. partly cloudy skies tomorrow and a slow recovery. temperatures not getting that much warmer which is the good news. in fact, by next weekend beyond that, after easter, maybe we might be able to get some rain in around here. 80 in san jose. morgan hill about the same. could see a roar, 78 in milpitas. look at the low 80s in santa cruz. today the warmest day at our coast around the boardwalk 75 and palo alto. mostly sunny conditions, maybe a

new this morning from the west african nation of new guinie that the ebola is over. there's been 3100 cases there since august. the health emergency places restrictions on burials. all internments must be secured by the red cross. citizens have become less and less vigilant. >> a number of new developments in the deadly germanwings crash and the co-pilot believed to have done it deliberately. 27-year-old andreas lubitz sought treatment for a potentially career-ending vision problem. german media said they found antidepressants in a search. his apartment. and leaked transcripts reportedly from the cockpit voice recorder were posted online. meanwhile new questions have risen about whether he was fit to fly. >> i don't think a psychological screening method will be the best. making sure two people are in the cockpit as a rule is the best methodology. >> at the crash site yesterday search crews held a moment of silence before resuming the grim task of recovering wreckage and bodies in the the alps.

>> a scary situation in canada this morning. an air canada jet made a hard landing and came off the runway. everyone was able to make it off the plane, but about two dozen were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. you see snow blowing and piles of it on the runways. air canada officials say the weather may have played a role. in yemen saudi arabia said its air strikes have destroyed any remaining jet fighters and pushed shi'ite fighters out of areas. they continue to target scud missiles in yemen. they continue to cross into saudi arabia. yemen's president left his country after losing his ability to lead. he has the support of arab believers who are calling for a regional military force to deal with the conflict. it's believed the rebels are backed by iran. next month could be a big one for presidential candidates

to formally announce their run for the white house. sources tell cnn that florida senator marco rubio will likely launch his bid. last week texas senator ted cruz became the first prospective contender to make his bid official. and on the democratic side cnn has learned hillary clinton is planning an april launch, as well. however, if clinton doesn't run, this man, martin o'malley might. the former maryland governor is someone who could potentially challenge clinton. he will appear later this morning with george stephanopoulos on "this week." and you can see "this week" right here on abc7 at 8:00 following good morning america weekend. >> this morning an american and two russians are aboard the international space station following yesterday's arrival. scott kelly and one of his

russian counterparts will spend 342 days in the orbiting lab. about twice as long as a standard mission. this is n.a.s.a.'s first attempt at a year-long mission. part of kelly's mission will include studies how extended time in space affects the human body. many people do it. you have a bad meal or you don't like the service, you go straight to yelp and vent. this is the world that we live in today. but now abc news reporter rebecca jarvis tells us businesses are fed up and some are fighting back. >> for this popular hunan restaurant in milbrae, california named "wonderful." it's not uncommon to find a line of waiting diners. but one unhappy person posted this negative review on yelp. he claims he spoke to a waitress to be seated.

"it's not that classy a place burks they refuse to seat me." surprise, the restaurant owners looked at surveillance video. >> he never even spoke to any service. he walked in, he took a look around and just left within 22 seconds. >> the post going viral. many applauding the restaurant. but there's a whole other business backlash against bad reviews that's backfiring. >> smelled bad, kept the windows open the entire time we were there. >> when robbie checked into this hotel for a wedding, he was so disappointed he wrote a yelp review and gave it just one star. the hotel e-mailing robbie his negative review would cost the newly married couple $500. the bride and groom had apparently missed that when they signed their contract. backlash ensued, and later on they claimed embarrassment and claiming it was a joke. in some cases businesses have even taken the extreme step of suing reviewers. yelp said the law is on the side of the consumer. >> they have a right to express their opinion and accurately and truthfully describe their experiences.

cooler than yesterday at this time. here's a look from the roof camera. it looks pretty calm. the winds will be picking up so it will be brisk at the coast from ocean beach to stinson and half moon bay. look at the 39 in petaluma. 41 napa. but into the 80s today. oh temperatures will climb another 40 degrees or so from your morning lows. and finally from mt. tam, this is a very nice picture with clear sky and a little warmer today all around the bay for the most part. but with the winds coming in tomorrow off of the water and a little stronger the numbers will drop as much as 7 to 10 degrees in some areas but we will stay dry and then we will recover slowly throughout the middle of the week. a big dome of high pressure over the entire state of california, even pushing up into oregon and washington, allowing for the warmer weather today the warmer day of the weekend and the warmest day of the work week. as we get into april, can we get

any rain in here? of course, the extended outlook advertising a change. but whether or not we can believe that that's the big question. we have fog and a high surf advisory for southern california. a couple degrees of cooling there. 68 in monterey and the northern sierra. pretty warm in sacramento at 85. we will be looking at mid-70s today in oakland. there's your cool-down. by about 2 degrees tomorrow and dropping into the low 70s tuesday and wednesday. slightly warmer tuesday and wednesday but it doesn't look too extreme. there's the trough coming in the end of the week. it could allow for maybe some changes into next weekend. but check out today. we have mid-60s at half moon bay. 80s yesterday in santa cruz. we will do it again today before a big cool-down for your monday. 75 in pal amounts, as well as richmond. look at the 80s around lake port, napa clear lake and into antioch looking at mid-80s. 83 fairfield and concord about
