news. a san francisco police officer was hurt in a car crash today. it temporarily sent a real panic through the department. i'll explain why. it happened just before noon at 8th and harrison streets in the city's south market neighborhood. sky 7 h.d. was overhead as more than a dozen officers responded because they couldn't reach the injured cop on his radio for some time. and they were afraid he'd been shot. the accident turned out to be relatively minor. the officer was injured and went to the hospital to be checked out. the other driver is okay. the winds are starting to pick up in the bay area. let's get to abc 7 meteorologist sandy patel to see how long the winds are expected to last. >> you're going to continue to see gusty winds through tonight and going into tomorrow. behind me the flags are blowing. let me show the wind gust at this hour. sfo just a short time ago was gusting to 40. now 39 miles per hour. 25 at concord. 31 out of the northwest in santa rosa. and 22 in san jose as we take a look at a picture behind me.

i was trying to show the kgo roof camera closer view of that wind. live doppler 7 h.d. will be tracking some showers in the not-too-distant future. i'll have a leak at the forecast coming up. dan? >> okay. thanks. the backlash against indiana continues to grow tonight. it is happening at the same time that the state's governor is asking for amendments to a law many see as anti-gay. oakland's mayor is calling for a boycott of indiana. today the san francisco supervisor introduced a resolution that includes a tough boycott, as well. abc 7's carolyn tyler is live at city hall with the story. >> reporter: dan a preliminary review shows about $2 million to $3 million is what the city spends each year with indiana businesses. those dollars would be pulled under a measure introduced today. san francisco aurp visor scott wiener wants higszean -- supervisor scott wiener wants colleagues to add their

measure. and any others that would turn back the clock on equality and foster a culture of intolerance. other ceos including apple's tim cook and mark beniof of sales force say their companies will boycott the hoosier state. sales force employees we talked with are proud of the move. >> hopefully it will effect change. >> reporter: the supervisor believes change can come from ordinary citizens. he's asking all san franciscans to steer clear of indiana. in san francisco, abc7 news. arkansas lawmakers today approved similar legislation despite intensifying criticism. republican governor asa hutchinson said he would sign the bill into law. its sponsors in the arkansas general assembly reject any clauses to explicitly bar discrimination of gays and lesbians. san bruno's mayor is calling for the creation of a watchdog group to keep a close eye on pg&e and the california public utilities commission. this morning the mayor said he

reports the $1.6 billion penalty proposed against pg&e for the deadly gas pipeline explosion in 2010. he want an independent monitor to ensure safety is top concern at the utility. >> provide much-needed assistance to work as a fact gatherer and audit data and flag potential safety violations and concerns. >> reporter: pg&e told abc 7 it does not see a need for an independent monitor. it wants the penalty it will pay to go toward gas pipeline safety. a day after a fire ripped through a housing development under construction in alameda county, investigators are saying the blaze could be suspicious. the flames destroyed four u four homes under construction at the jordan ranch. crews got lost trying to find the exact location into the new subdivision. a serial robber struck again in petaluma as police feared. a man similar to the one in the video from last week held up a

7-eleven on washington street this morning. investigators believe the same guy has now robbed five convenience stores in petaluma since last wednesday. in each case, the robber claims to have a gun and demands cash. he has yet to display a weapon. vacaville police arrested three men who you see after one accidentally called 911. when authorities answered the call, there was no reply. police went out for a welfare check. the men consented to a search. police tell abc7 news they found more than 29 pounds of marijuana. a state-funded preschool in the east bay city of antioch will be forced to close. the school district is a landlord and refuses to extend their lease leaving hundreds without a free preschool. we have more on the impact to the community. >> reporter: hi, cheryl. you know the lease is up in july, and the school says they really can't find another

location like this one. they say this is perfect for their 300 kids. ironically, it's the antioch unified school district that wants them out. liz landon has been teaching at kids club preschool in antioch for six years. she says her students leave ready for kindergarten. many of them learn english here. >> if this school isn't here, they're not going to learn that english before nay go to kindergarten. so they're going to be behind. >> reporter: the preschool head been leasing the space from the school district for ten years for less than $5,000 a month. the preschool is entirely dependent on grants from the state. >> we do currently serve about 60% of the state preschool kids in town. if we're eliminated, that is going to be a major blow to the subsidies of the town. >> reporter: a year ago, the district notified the preschool it wanted the space back for their special needs kids. >> we need a central site so that all the students can come

to one location, and we can assign our support staff to those students at one central school site. >> reporter: the school says finding an appropriate space for preschoolers has been nearly impossible. >> for example we'd have to make classrooms put natural lighting in, windows, skylights and commercial kitchen, office space. >> reporter: that's money they don't have. parents are worried that if the preschool closes they won't have a place to go. >> not private preschool for us. if this wasn't here, then we would have to just stay home. >> reporter: parents aren't ready to give up yet. tomorrow they'll hold a meeting to try gets the community involved. in antioch, abc7 news. homes advocates in san jose are calling on city leaders to stop clearing homeless encampments and start building affordable housing. this is coming four months after official closed down the jungle. that was a massive homeless encampment at center and story roads. abc7 news was there as the

an early start to fire season in southern california. a fire threatened homes for a time this afternoon in san bernardino county. the blaze broke out in a dry riverbed in spring valley about 90 miles northeast of los angeles. it spread quickly to 60 acres and burned a fence and outbuilding. authorities evacuated a handful of ranch homes in the area. crews were able to douse the flames before they got too close. a major intersection back open in fremont following a

one-truck accident this morning. sky 7 h.d. was overhead shortly after a tractor-trailer loaded with scrap metal overturned on mission boulevard near stevenson boulevard about 10:30. police had to shut down mission from walnut avenue to stevenson for several hours to investigate why that truck tipped over and to clean up the mess. the driver was not seriously hurt. hundreds of people marked cesar chavez day by marching through the streets of san francisco. abc 7 was there as the marchers reached the civic center. they were accompanied by several supervisors. this afternoon the board unanimously passed a measure to support the united farm workers in a 25-year struggle to unionize workers at the fruit producer in the central valley. >> the company has used every legal effort they can to really prolong the implementation of this contract. >> they're new to the claim. in a statement it accuses the union of waiting 20 years to negotiate a contract and says

workers voted to decertify the ufw. an administrative law judge will decide on the dispute in the coming months. we'll see what happens. you may not know it but your new tv can spy on you. >> how creepy is that? there's a way that you can prevent it. if it helps to level the playing field for women and minorities for venture capital, the battle was worth it. >> a group of female tech workers believes ellen powell's kay against a former silicon valley firm was worth it even if she didn't win. the female tech workers raised money to buy a full-page ad that says "thanks ellen." it's featured in the "palo alto daily post."

a free magazine distributed in a thousand silicon valley locations. women said even show powell didn't get the verdict she wanted, it did inspire a greater discussion about divest in the industry and could inspire -- diversity in the industry and could inspire other women to take a stand. the effects of climate change on the world's seas could be felt thousands of years from now. until now it was thought that marine ecosystems would only need hundreds of years to pounce back. researchers made their conclusions after looking at sedimentary fossils from the california coastline that date back 16,000 years. a public meeting is underway in san francisco to decide the future location of the alcatraz ferry. currently the ferries take off from pier 33 along the embarcadero. the national parks service which operates alcatraz has not been able to reach a new lease agreement with the port of san francisco. it's considering moving the ferry terminal to land it already owns at ft. mason. that has residents there worried about an invasion of tourist.
