good wednesday morning, everyone. i'm bazi kanani in for reena ninan. >> and hello to you all. i'm t.j. holmes. we start with spring storms causing severe flooding overnight. >> the radar is showing the problem areas right now. storms are stretching across the south from georgia all the way to oklahoma. this video just in from oklahoma, heavy rain and wind pounding the area. >> and the scene also in oklahoma city overnight. heavy rain causing flash flooding. see these cars, the tires covered in water. this is in a mall parking lot. and from arkansas, that is not snow. it's hail. one dash cam captured the sight and sound of it hitting a windshield and hood, and take a look at the swimming pool near little rock percolating as the hail hits the water. >> so who is in for stormy weather today? here now accuweather meteorologist justin povick. good morning to you, justin. >> t.j. and bazi, thanks.

the northeast quieting down on this wednesday with high pressure in place and lots of sunshine. it will start out sunny over the central plains, but unfortunately the concern turns to severe weather later on in the day. early to mid afternoonafternoon around omaha, northbound, the twin cities and all the way back to south wichita damaging winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. not expecting a tornado outbreak but it only takes one to do a lot of damage. southbound toward dallas, little rock still dealing with some general thunderstorms. severe chances not as high but there will be some drenching downpours and some gusty winds. later on this week and storminess switches to the southeast with wet weather also in the northeast. t.j. and bazi, back to you. >> thanks, justin. breaking overnight in los angeles, tragedy for one of america's wealthiest families. >> oil heir, andrew getty, has been found dead at his home in the hollywood hills. sources tell "the l.a. times" that getty died from

blunt force trauma but that the death does not appear to be a crime. getty was 47 years old. he was the grandson of the late oil baron, j. paul getty. the family is said to be worth more than $5 billion. also from los angeles this morning, singer/songwriter joni mitchell hospitalized in intensive care. her official website reports that she was found unconscious at her bel air home, but regained consciousness in the ambulance, and she is now undergoing tests and is reported to be awake and in good spirits. the 71-year-old is an eight-time grammy winner whose hits include "woodstock," "both sides now" and "big yellow taxi." marathon talks over iran's nuclear program are now in overtime after dragging past a midnight deadline. secretary of state john kerry briefed president obama and his national security team by video teleconference from switzerland. the state department saying there's been enough progress to merit continuing negotiations but several difficult hurdles remain. iran and six nations have been trying to hammer out an outline for a future agreement aimed at curbing iran's nuclear program

and a final deal could end crushing economic sanctions against iran. indiana's legislature trying to hammer out a fix to its controversial religious freedom act. governor mike pence is now leading the call to change it after days of protest during which he refused to say whether it shoulding legal to discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation. he says it is now time to be clear. >> should it be legal in the state of indiana to discriminate against gays and lesbians? what do you say now? >> i don't support discrimination against gays or lesbians or anyone else. >> so no. >> no. >> but governor pence says the fix to the law won't involve approving anti-discrimination legislation for gays and lesbians. it will only make clear that businesses don't have the right to deny services to anyone. meanwhile arkansas legislatures approved a similar bill even as the controversy was playing out in indiana.

arkansas governor asa hutchison has promised to sign it but the chief executive of the state's biggest business walmart is among those requesting that he veto it. in a tweet he said that it undermines what he calls the spirit of inclusion in the state. we have several major developments in the germanwings crash investigation. first the bombshell from parent company lufthansa that the airline knew about the co-pilot's long battle with depression despite saying last week that he was fit to fly. french officials are denying european reports, meanwhile, of cell phone video showing inside the plane during the flight's final seconds. they say phones have been found but their contents have not yet been reviewed. we turn to boston now and the defense has rested in the marathon bombing trial after calling just four witnesses. their testimony was meant to demonstrate that dzhokhar tsarnaev had nothing to do with the planning of the attack and that he was being influenced by his older brother. the defense made it clear from the start of the case that its strategy was to avoid the death penalty. closing arguments are scheduled for next monday.

and new england patriots owner robert kraft was the star witness yesterday at the murder trial of his former tight end aaron hernandez. kraft said he had a conversation with hernandez in which hernandez said he was innocent of the murder for which he's charged. prosecutors and defense attorneys say they expect to wrap up their cases next week. a woman is under arrest this morning after yet another security breach at the san jose airport. a u.p.s. worker spotted the woman walking near a cargo area and police believe she jumped a fence to get onto the grounds. officers say the woman became combative when they approached her and she had to be subdued. that is the same airport where a teenager stowed away in a wheel well on a flight to hawaii. a brush fire that started out as a controlled burn threatened homes in the desert east of los angeles. residents in the apple valley area were forced to evacuate but they have been allowed to return home as firefighters gain control. authorities say the fire was started by the parks department. but gusty and unpredictable winds caused it to spread

quickly. unsettling new images this morning of those luxury homes teetering on the edge of a hillside near seattle. a landslide that started friday continues to menace the area. chunks of earth pulling away and tumbling down taking trees with them. some residents were allowed back in yesterday to pack up their belongings. with more rain in the forecast, things are expected to get even worse. well, still ahead, internet outrage aimed at the new host of "the daily show." he answers his critics about his past tweets. and record fines. nascar hands down some big penalties because of some tire trickery. and a video going viral and now a police officer under investigation. what started the profanity-laced tirade.

well, cadillac's new full size sedan has a unique security feature. the ct6 takes photos of everything around the car whenever the alarm system is set off. the technology relies on the same cameras used to help with parking the car. when the alarm goes off the security pictures are stored on a memory card. the new ct6 goes into production late this year. thousands of low wage workers in seattle are getting a raise starting today. the city begins phasing in a law which raises the minimum wage to $15en hour among the highest in the nation. a lobbying group representing franchise owners has tried to get an injunction to stop the law. but the judge refused. minimum wages aren't an issue for the rolling stones. they've just announced a new

u.s. tour. the stones made about a half a billion dollars on their last tour. mick jagger alone said to be worth more than 300 million. keith richards just slightly less than that. their 15-city tour kicks off next month in san diego. it's their first here in 18 years. along the way they can sample the new drinks at starbucks. they combine juices and dannon greek yogurt sold in the 4300 starbucks locations in the northwest and alaska. the three flavors can be customized with fresh kale and protein powder. later this year the new starbucks/dannon partnership will expand to parfaits. attention, pac-man fans. how would you like to play the classic arcade game with a map as the board. that's exactly what you can do today thanks to google maps. just search an area and in the lower left click on the pac-man option, and then the map will be turned into a pac-man board. you can control pac-man with the direction keys. good luck, everyone, and be careful today.

yeah, what you just saw there, an excavator that fell from the crane that was holding it up over a large construction hole. one of the workers caught this action on his camera. the hole is the site of a new subway station in chile. no one was hurt. when the excavator dropped into the hole there's a good chance it needed a little repair, however. >> i bet. well, now for a look at morning road conditions, a lot of trouble in the mississippi valley and central plains from texas all the way to the canadian border. some mountain snow in the northern rockies, as well. >> if you're flying, airport delays possible in kansas, minneapolis and memphis. kansas city, excuse me, i should say. nascar is coming down hard on one racing team for using illegal tires. >> driver ryan newman's team was found to have violated

nascar rules by manipulating them allowing air to escape during the race. newman's crew chief was fined $25,000 and suspended for six weeks and two other crew members were suspended and all three will also be on probation for the season and newman was docked 75 points that dropped him 21 places. now to that latest twist in that so-called "gone girl" kidnapping case in california. labeled a hoax by police. it's a 15-page manifesto, four e-mails supposedly from the group that abducted denise huskins. they're defending the alleged victim and her boyfriend demanding an apology from the police for not believing them and they expressed regret for taking her saying she was not the intended target. huskins' attorney says it's proof that his client is not lying. >> i've been the recipient of all the e-mails and they're saying don't underestimate us. we are the ones responsible and the vallejo police hasd better

the boy named luke peeked through the blinds and didn't recognize who it was when the man broke a window and went inside. luke locked himself in a bedroom and called 911. the 911 dispatcher gave him a secret code so the intruder wouldn't hear him. >> did he have a weapon in his hand? or anything? >> i don't know. >> okay. all i want you to do is press either 1 for yes, 2 for no, okay. >> well, the suspect ran off when police arrived but because luke had seen the man at the window, they found him nearby carrying a bag full of stolen loot. the police are now praising luke for his bravery. we turn to some sports now. kentucky, wisconsin, michigan state, duke getting ready to head to indianapolis. >> and as for the nba and the nhl, some of last night's highlights now from espn. >> hey there, the big news on "sportscenter," ludacris has a new cd but we have other sports that we carried over for you.

have seen a security patrol come by the southwest corner here of the airport. several times. yesterday, they missed a woman who climbed and jumped over the fence and made her way on to the tarmac. she was crossing airfield and an u.p.s. employee noticed woman and stopped her he called for help. this was in the cargo area of the airport at gate 118. she resisted arrest but was taken and custody. the congressman is calling for more security. >> i have been calling for perimeter breach notification alerts that will tell you the moment a breach occurs. >> this is the 5th security breach in mineta san jose international airport in less than a year. in april last year a santa clara teen stowed away in the rear well of a jet. in august, marilyn harman
