live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> san francisco police are asking the public for help in identifying the attacker seen on this video brutally beating a homeless man with a metal rod. >> good morning, i am eric thomas. >> i am kristen sze. we have new information of what may have happened before the unfrom vehicle attack. >> kristen, i spoke with a witness who called sunday thinking this started with a fight across the street outside of a strip club and the homeless man was simply in the wrong

place at the wrong time. >> the video shows a homeless man sitting against a wall on san francisco's street and another man walks toward him and he is carrying what appears to be a metal rod or pop and for no reason whacks the homeless man across the head. this happened in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood on wednesday night a little before 9:30. >> i was in shock. >> justin is also seen in the video on the right-hand side of the scene smoking, just feet away as the suspect walks by. he did not recognize the attacker. he said he might have been involved in a fight that happened on the same block earlier in the night. >> that came across the street and these happens here often. >> he thinks the suspect may have mistook the homeless man, robert, for someone else. >> i am back out here after everything is said and done and out of nowhere comes this guy around the corner and i did not

think much, lighting a smoke and before i looked up robert was hit on the head by a pipe, the victim was blowing profusely and lost a lot of blood. three received approximately 50 stitches. >> vicious attack is hard to watch. police hope people take a good luck to help identify the suspect. friends say robert sits on a crate outside the gangway bar nearly every day and is described as friendly, religious and lied to drink but stayed out of trouble. the attack left them baffled. >> upset. very upset. worried. and concerned about robert. >> the victim is being treat at san francisco general hospital and and in critical condition. >> the suspect, if caught, could be charged with attempted murder because it was so violent. thank you. uc berkeley police are investigating a sexual assault on campus from last month when a

female was taked in her dom by a co-worker by a company where she worked. >> less than two hours from now the san francisco police chief is expected to hand doubt 9 latest round of discipline against a group of officers accused sending racist text memorials to each other. the chief suhr told abc that three officers will be suspended with a recommendation to the police commission they be fired. another officer has resigned and the ts were released during the bail hearing for a former officer who was convicted on corruption charges who began serving his sentence today. >> a scandalous chapter could come to an end for one man involved former county supervisor george shirakawa is sentenced for illegal campaign mailers. matt keller is at the courthouse with that report. >> the judge called a recess after a lengthy discussion about george mason shirakawa's

sentencing after the former county supervisor expressed remorse in court for the crime and also apologized to the court and the voters and to the santa clara county community. this morning we had video of george shirakawa entering the courtroom. he had nothing to say. in the address to the court he got emotional at times and said he regretted his commends and accepted responsibility if creating a flyer in 2010 after being charged with launching a mailer to benefit a former city council member. the prosecutor wants shirakawa to spend a year in jail if he does not answer who helped him with this. the judge said shirakawa should get time served because his previous conviction he believes was a mistake by his previous attorney after serving seven months of one year. the judge is expected to give the sentence in the courtroom after the short recess.

a raging fire halted production at the biggest appliance makers in the nation at the general electric france louisville kentucky collapsed this morning. the six-alarm fire broke out at the appliance park forcing residents to shelter in place because of thick black smoke. a couple of hundred people work here but custody a company holiday and very few people were actually inside. the production shifts for later today and for tomorrow have been canceled. >> also in kentucky 100 water rescues were made today as storms understanded many roads.

heavier chance of showers on tuesday. this is how it looks on the peninsula at sfo this morning a lot of cloud cover if you head to newark, that guardia j.f.k. they are all having delays right now. tree pollen is high. we are hoping at least if we get the rain on sunday that it is enough to warn it out. if not tuesday's will for a day or two and bring you some relief. companily low-to-mid 70s inland east bay and also in the south bay low 70s through the north bay and mid-to-upper 60s around the bay shore and 60 at half moon bay and 66 headed to santa cruz. if you are going to the game temperatures are in the mid-50 under a nearly full noon which, tomorrow morning, at 4:127 we have a total eclipse so maybe get out there and watch it. the temperatures when you get up: 37 in napa, upper 30s in the san ramon valley and everyone else is in the low-to-mid 40s until san francisco at 50 degrees.

now, here is a look at cold front to the north. that will bypass it and it is the low we are more enthralled with the high pressure will keep us dry the next few days and this low is what will slide south along the coast and bring us our first chance of seeing a change tomorrow with the sea breeze coming in and the temperature drops about six to eight togethers away from the coast. and then the clouds, things are thicker&scattered showers in the north bay down to about half moon bay and then there is the 8:00 to noon and then wet in the afternoon and pretty quiet. look at this lining up along the coast for monday morning during the commute some showers and heavy drizzle and hurricane at my seven-day forecast, tuesday showers, thunder small hail, it is possible. we could get up to .1" with the sunday rain and open tuesday, we
