it is saturday april 4. good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a quick look at the weather. cooler temperatures and the possibility of rain from the holiday weekend. here is meteorologist lisa argen tracking it with live doppler 7 hd. hi lisa. >> hi, chris. hi, everyone. you can see an area of low pressure spinning off of the pacific northwest coast. and this is what will bring the heavier rain by early next week. we're looking at light rain, ist and drizzle for easter sunday. right now it's all about the sunshine from our camera where numbers are slowly coming up in the north bay to the low 40s. it's 50 in concord. livermore, good morning, at 45 degrees. so northwest winds will keep the coast cool today, just in the 50s. the numbers around average. that's in the upper 60s for our warmest east bay communities around concord and livermore today today. look for about 62 in san

francisco. mid-60s across the bay. a few high clouds. the rain holds off. it's going to get the easter egg hunt a little wet tomorrow and even more rain coming our way early next weak. low snow levels as well. that forecast is coming up up. chris? lisa thank you. developing news out of san jose where part of a busy freeway is still closed following a deadly accident. a pedestrian was hit and killed on the southbound lanes of 101 near story at around 3:30 this morning. the highway patrol closed down two lanes of the freeway it at the story road on ramp at the time, and those lanes will be closed for several is more hours while the chp investigates the collision. at this time it is not clear why the pedestrian was walking on the freeway in the first place. a settlement this morning for the family of a south bay girl who killed herself after she was sexually assaulted at a party. but this was about much more than the money. 15-year-old audrie pott committed suicide in 2012, just a week after she was assaulted. abc 7 news report erer leslie

brinkley has more. >> reporter: at a high school party in 2012, 15 year-year-old audrie pott drank a potent punch of vodka and gatorade and passed out. she was then sexually assaulted. the three attackers took pictures and shared them with classmates. days after the photos emerged audrie hanged herself. three teenaged boys were found guilty, one settled out of court last month. now closure are for the family as the other two boys agreed to pay $950,000 as part of a wrongful death lawsuit. they had to issue a public apology in court. the apology included admitting audr audrie was not conscious during the assault, that she did not give consent, and she did not invite or encourage the sexual acts. the apology went on to address the suicide saying i also apologize for false rumors about audrie that used to serve and you humiliate her. she did not deserve, nor would any human being deserve, what we put audrie through.

the settlement requires the boys to be part of a documentary and to talk publicly about the consequences of drinking, assaults, and sexting. >> when you're talking about the defendant making the rounds in schools, talking about what they did, trying to educate other kids about what happened and to prevent it from happening again, i can't imagine a better way to accepted a message. >> reporter: many parents at saratoga high school did not want to talk about the settlement, but some were relieved. >> a high level of consciousness among parents now based on this case. >> reporter: they hope lessons are learned as the pott family released a statement saying they are happy their daughter's name has been cleared. in san jose, i'm leslie brinkley abc 7 news. also developing this morning, a man from oakland is the first reported u.s. citizen killed in the recent strife in yemen. our media partner the bay area news group, reports a man died in a mortar shelling.

the gas station ownerer was trying to get to his wife and 2-year-old daughter, want to go get both of them out of the violence. the council on islamic relations is calling for the evacuation of all u.s. citizens. a san francisco supervisor is also joining the call to evacuate americans trapped in that country. supervisor james kim stood with community groups to urge the u.s. to intervene on behalf of some 300 americans who cannot leave the war torn country. among those trapped is a man from san francisco. the 26-year-old was there working with coffee farmers. his brother is very upset by the lack of help. the u.s. has three navy ships currently in the area. >> the u.s. department, their message to us was that they cannot do anything at the moment and their message to him was to, quote, stay inside and stay safe. >> he was trying to leave but was stopped by a militia group

as he tried to board a boat in ayden. this week the chinese navy helped evacuate 225 foreigners from yemen. 8:05 is our time. now to the scandal rocking the bay area law enforcement community. san francisco police chief greg suhr is asking for seven of his officers to be fired for sending or responding to racist, homophobic text messages. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has the reaction. for them to say those tapes of things, shame on them. >> reporter: reaction on the streets to the scandal that's rocked the sspd. race racist homophobic texts exchanged between cops. >> it's just part of reality i guess, and maybe part of the law enforcement culture. i'm not sure that there's a solution. >> reporter: chief greg suhr wants seven police officers to be fired for sending or responding to offensive texts he calls representhensible. >> we cannot have this had in san francisco, and we have to do

everything to the best of our ability to rout it out and address it. >> reporter: san francisco naacp president amos brown says the texts reflect a bigger problem in the department. >> in terms of attitude racism, and unjust practices, san francisco is ferguson. >> it was really mean-spirited. >> reporter: jennifer grant with our family coalition, a resource for lgbt families, believes while the scandal is disappointing, it doesn't reflect on the entire police department but could be a turning point. >> the silver lining to this is it's coming out. there will be more trainings. people are talking about it. all those conversations result in progress and learning and moving forward. >> reporter: meantime, the scandal could jeopardize court cases that relied on testimony from the officers linked to the ugly texts. a review is under way n. san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. happening today families in

san francisco's bayview neighborhood will hold a march calling for the end of violence. the black lives matter march are will begin at 3rd and evans and then travel it to mhk park. participants will carry large banners with the names and faces of those whose lives have been lost to violence in the bayview and across san francisco if in the past year. today's march takes place from noon until 3:00. police have arrested a man suspected of attacking a homeless man with a metal pipe. surveillance video shows the violent incident wednesday at larkin near geary in san francisco. the victim robert perry, was sitting as the attacker walked up and hit perry in the head so hard he dropped the pipe. >> i was in shock and then eventually i sort of pulled it together and then i called 911 after, well, a bun much of disoriented people were in shock as well watching what happened. >> perry is in critical condition. police spotted the suspect, arthur lee jones in the area last night. he will face attempted murder

and aggravated assault charges. 8:07 the time. a martinez man accused of having sex with an underaged girl last year is now also accused of making child pornography. blake robert johnston was arrested last year after he police said an under aged oregon girl faked her own suicide to kol come to the bay area with johnston. yesterday federal investigators found explicit images on his devices believing he created some of the images and may have had contact with at least three young girls. police are investigating a possible abduction attempt in concord. this letter was sent out warning parents earlier this week. it says a woman claiming to be a student's mother asked for her to be sent to the park inging lot for an appointment. the school contacted the mother and found out it was false. the student admits she shared personal information with a stranger on social media. well, if you're up early enough you may have seen this morning's lunar eclipse. the shortest total lunar eclipse in 100 years got under way earlier today.

towards the bay. weatherwise we are in for some changes. lisa argen joins us in a bit with what to expect. thieves in walnut creek use add large truck to rip free an atm. it happened yesterday morning at the shell gas station at ignacio valley road and california boulevard. one man distracted the clerk. another tied a chain to the a it tm. the driver hit the gas and tore the swrout door atm from its mount. they tossed it in the truck and took off. a california man sentenced to 18 years in prison for his revenge porn website. kevin bullard was convicted earlier this year of identity theft and felony counts of extortion. authorities say the 28-year-old allowed users to upload thousands of sexually explicit photos of women on his website. he then created another website for the women to pay money to have their pictures removed. one of his victims who was not identified spoke about how the scam damaged her life. >> ever since this happened, my

life has gone through a down spiral. it's still going through a down spiral. i'm homeless because of this. i lost may family, friends and i've lost almost everything because of this. >> bullard's father apologized to the victims in court calling his son's actions both shameful and stupid. a bay area teenager spent more than six hours trapped between rocks at the national park. fire crews the marine corps and search and rescue teams all helped to get the 17-year-old boy out on thursday. he was hiking on a school trip when authorities say he got stuck. rescuers had to chisel the rock to get him free. we're told he has myinor scrapes and bruises. 8:14 is our time. happening today people on the pep ins la will gather to honor their deceased loved ones as part of a chinese holiday. sky lawn cemetery in san mateo is expecting 10,000 people to take part in the festival.

the festival pays homage to the deceased by tending to go graves and burning paper offerings. participants will also engage in rituals they believe case away bad spirits. the cemetery will have dragon dancers, monks and live music. a first of its kind census has documented the comeback of bay area river otters. the effort to count them started with volunteers and now has the weight of scientific research as well. as abc 7 news anchor dan ashley explains the otters aren't just cute, they're survivors. >> reporter: it's been more than two years since sutro sam cause add sensation on ocean beach. sam is believed to be the first river otter in san francisco in 50 years. and now, it turns out he has quite a bit of company. >> there are river otters now in every bay area county, which is wonderful. >> reporter: megan isador.

river otters disappeared in the 1960s. >> we're sure the reason they left is, one, trapping for fur and, two, really poor water quality. >> reporter: after decades of work to clean up bay area waters, a sprinkling of otters began coming back. now the river otter ecology project has just published a scientific study indicatinging those otters are not just loners who have lost their way but families repopulating the bay area. >> at this point we've had about 1,165 total sightings. >> reporter: the most intense research is in southern and western marin county with evidence of at least 50 individual otters. thousands of videos taken by motion activated cameras show a lot about otter behavior and how they're using various habitats. it turns out they are quite adaptable, and you don't have to be a scientist to see they have a lot of fun. otters are also brave. this this mother is chasing a coyote away from her pups. all the otters in these videos

are river otters not the to be confused with their cousin sea otters that live mostly in the ocean. >> one of the things that make river otters such a great research subject is they use all parts of a watershed from the fresh water down to the brac can kish marshes. >> reporter: volunteers have collected more than 1,000 samples now being analyzed at a san francisco state lab. the results are expected to help explain where the otters came from and how they are related to each other. in san francisco, dan ashley abc 7 news. if you want to report an otter sighting, volumenteer or donate to the project, we posted a link to our website. and a word of warning, the growing number of otters means they're now getting hit by cars. volunteers urge you to even your eye out for otters on the roadway. time now is 8:17.

>> reporter: b.a.r.t. will be installing these new pads between fruitvale and coliseum stations. that means passengers will have to take a transit bus shuttle between the two stations causing 30 to 60-minute delays. >> when i heard about it, i had other plans. stay put. >> reporter: it will take place over 11 weekends from now until august 16. the biggest detour of passengers is expected during five oakland athletics home games. thousands of baseball fans rely on b.a.r.t. to get to the coliseum. >> it's going to be too complicated. got to keep things simple for me. >> i tried to take the car. >> that's not very good. maybe i'll take uber. who knows? >> we're waiting for the nba to come out with its playoff schedule. as we know the warriors will be in the playoffs, and we want to make sure we don't conflict with their home playoff games. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. will use 12 buses to begin with.

the bus bridge between the fruitvale and the coliseum b.a.r.t. station goes into effect for the first time this sunday, and it should give b.a.r.t. a better idea what to expect in the coming weeks. in oakland, alan wang, abc 7 news. major construction is coming to the heart of san francisco as crews install a pedestrian tunnel for the medical center. lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction overnight. then early friday the same stretch will be fully shut down straight through sunday night. the tunnel under vaness will connect the new hospital to the medical office building. a group of people in san francisco are holding an event this weekend to clean up a popular park. the group, friends of delores park, says littering has become such a problem that park rangers are now ticketing 350e78 inging people. they are asking people to take a picture with trash bags and post it using the #keepdoloclean.

they hope the city will call off the ticketing if people are making more of an effort to keep the park clean. new this morning president obama is describing the historic understanding the u.s. reached with iran this week regarding a nuclear program. in his weekly address the president says the deal it if fully implemented, meets the objectives of cutting off every pathway iran could take to develop a nuclear weapon. the president emphasized if there is back sliding from iran in the months to come there will be no deal. >> this deal denies iran the plutonium necessary to build a bomb. it shuts down iran's path to a bomb using enriched uranium. iran has agreed that it will not stockpile the materials needed to build a weapon. moreover, international inspectors will have unprecedented access to iran's nuclear program because iran will face more inspections than any other country in the world. >> the nuclear deal has been overwhelmingly supported by the country's establishment. distracted driving goes well beyond texting or using your

at a funeral. a woman turned to 7 on your side's michael finney for help. >> reporter: kathy shows us pictures of her big brother enjoying family gatherings even as he struggles with illness. >> he had three boys. he would do anything for his son. he was a devoted father. >> reporter: kathy and her sister wanted to show how much he meant to the family when he died. >> we were going to send a nice big spray. >> reporter: kathy searched on line for flower shops in san jose. up came amy's florist. and there she found the perfect floral wreath. >> it's called field of lavender. very pretty. >> i ordered it five days prior to the funeral. >> reporter: kathy paid for the flowers and received the confirmation from amy florist. >> i show up at the funeral home

on the day of the funeral on sunday and i don't see the flowers. >> reporter: she looked every are where. the flowers never made it to the funeral. kathy had to tell her family. >> it was more than the flowers. it was just showing our love and that this is our last respect. i was upset. i was really upset. >> reporter: she tried to contact the florist but no one picked up the phone. she wondered what if she hadn't been at the service. >> i would have never known that had he they didn't receive the flowers. >> reporter: kathy contacted 7 on your side. we found out the florist is not a flower shop in san jose. it's a company in southern california, and it has an "f" rating with the better business bureau bureau. with many customers saying they never got their flowers either. however, after kathy disputed the charge amy florist did refund her $152 right away. and the company e-mailed 7 on your side saying those flowers were indeed delivers a day ahead as requested but could have been misplaced. the company said there are many reasons why someone might

believe the flowers weren't delivered at a funeral. they could have been delivered to the flower room and the funeral staff failed to move them to the fawn raluneral service. kathy says she'll never have that day back but her brother's ashes will be scattered in his homeland of fiji along with more flowers. companies can't lure customers who want a local florist. amy florist says it doesn't use a city name in its business title and has a network of florists in each city. bottom line look at the physical address for a florist if you want a local florist. i'm michael fin neyfinney, 7 on your side. >> we'll lack at snow tomorrow in the sierra nevada. a high of 56. windy, cold and snow showers on the way for the mountains.

welcome back everyone. the time now is 8:44. it is 57 degrees in san francisco, and a live look from our tower camera pointed at the golden gate bridge. we'll get a check of the full weather forecast with lisa argen just moments away. parking restrictions can be confusing. some say signs in los angeles are down right ridiculous. take a look at this. the testing began on the new grid system that officials hope will make things easier for drivers but you'll need some good eyesight to read these signs. they don't come cheap. the test run is costing the city $20,000. major advances at stanford has given a cancer patient his health along with a major improvement in his life. as cheryl jennings reports, you can see the results and the joy written all over his face.

>> reporter: when steven general son looks in the mirror he see as miracle, a face rekonconstructed from the ruins of stage four cancer. >> i was disfigured and then when the jaw faurd fractured i had a hard time eating, talking. >> reporter: he was now facing another surgery. in desperation steven turned to stanford surgeon and the powerful technology that promised to literally remap his face. >> he explained what he could do, that they would do computer mirror imaging and construct the jaw virt beforeually before they went in for surgery. >> you have an ideal situation. you've created the ideal before you get there. are. >> reporter: the stanford team began by taking ct scans which are beamed to michigan to be turned into a precise 3d model using a remote link. the doctor carefully analyzes the computer simulation as he plans the reconstruction.

>> can you pull up in red the bone that is diseased that we're going to remove and delete the bone so we can see what the jaw would look like without it. to fill in the space i want to mirror image the opposite side. can you show us the mirror image and fill in the space between the two? that's how we achieve the symmetric jaw and use that as the basis of the reconstruction. now that i have a model i take a 3d print. >> reporter: it is then used as a kind of template. surgeons bend flexible plates along the jaw line to capture the precise contours. >> when i go into the operating room, i have this in hand. >> reporter: the reconstructions can take many hours in the o.r. and recovery can stretch for weeks. but as the swelling receded, steven says he began to watch his familiar reflection reappear

in the mirror. >> after the surgery, i mean, i was blown away. >> as we talked about, at some point later we'll want to move the skin a little bit. >> reporter: follow-up surgeries could help him move even closer to his original appearance but it already runs far deeper than the cosmetic. >> the best thing is the ability to really have my speech and to be able to eat. i like having my life back. >> reporter: cheryl jennings, abc 7 news. what a great story. the doctor credits advances in micro vascular techniques allowing surgeons to deliver blood supply more effectively in cancer reconstruction. also down in palo alto the biggest celebration of the indian spring festival this weekend. festivities start at 11:00 a.m. today and tomorrow at the sand hill field but yesterday students at u.c. santa cruz marked the occasion there. the festival includes throwing colorful powder at each other along with dancing.

the san at that cruz celebration raised mon edd money. organize ers raised $1400 last year. the time is 8:48. we've been asking mother nature for rain for quite some time. it looks like she will deliver. >> with a one-two punch starting tomorrow for easter sunday. certainly cool and breezy with some wet weather arriving right along with that easter bunny. so the whole day certainly not a washout. here is what's coming. take a look at live doppler 7 hd. that circulation is an indication of cold air and finally it's going to sweep down the california coast. systems out of the north don't have a lot of moisture. we will take anything we can get. san francisco may see you up to he three-quarters of an inch and maybe a thunderstorm with small hail and low snow levels. mt. hamilton could see a dusting and perhaps 6-9 in the sierra nevada of some snow.

emeryville now where it is sunny, 54 in san carlos. half moon bay is cool. keeping our beaches in the 60s. a sunny golden gate bridge. it's 50 in concord and 45 in livermore. we had no winter at all, barely any springtime weather except this weekend. it will feel more like spring and, unfortunately, wet for easter but i don't think anyone is going to mind. in fact, heavier rain heads our way with the bulk of the system into monday night. tuesday is when we will see that unstable atmosphere with sun, the possibility of a thunderstorm and so it looks unsettled the next couple of days. here is a look at our radar and satellite composite. high pressure, look how far it is away from california. the breezy winds and the cold front to sweep on through. the first part of it will get our heads wet for easter sunday.

so the weak initial wave that will bring some mist and drizzle to the coast. today is the last day in in the 70s for los angeles. ten degrees cooler tomorrow in the upper 60s. very windy. winds up to 50 miles an hour in the sierra nevada and the snow heads into the mountains tomorrow. here we are late today. today is a quiet cool day with sunshine, increasing clouds late. easter sunday arriving cloudy and wet in the north bay and east bay. and then this front sweeps through the south bay the second half of the day. highs in the 50s and low 60s. our much more impressive system head ed headed our way late monday. the morning commute will be dry for monday. the afternoon a different story. easter sunday, well, it's going to be cloudy and cool. 50s and low 60s with the rain tapering off towards the after afternoon. here's the snow in the mountains. better late than never, i guess, with four inches around south lake. 9 inches maybe around kirkwood. a look at the temperatures in oakland. only 59 for easter sunday and then a bump up on monday.

the bay bridge series the giants were trying to even things you up last night. let's go out to at&t park where matt cain got the start. he's trying to come back from elbow surgery. here he gets sogart swinging. billy butler is called out on strikes. cain allowed three hits over four shutout innings. in the bottom half, buster posey takes it deep with two on. his first home run of the spring gave the giants the 3-0 lead. they go on to blank oakland, 4-0. for ladying the giants to three world series, bruce botch qui and bochy and brian sabean had their contracts extended through 2019. terms were not released. you can be sure they received nice raises. in addition sabean has been promoted to executive vice president of baseball operations. a two-time national league manager of the year, bochy is likely headed to the hall of fame. >> excited about knowing i'm here for years counting this year.

i couldn't have a better situation. i mean with who i work for the players i have the staff the ballpark, the fans, the city. i just love it here. >> the odds of the sharks making the playoffs are not good but at least they are going down fighting. let's take a look at the highlights. this blackhawks fan must have lost his way. the sharks jumped out to an early lead against arizona. 58 seconds in, hurdle beats couture for the 27th of the season. four minutes later couture's shot is deflected to patrick marlo who finds pavelski. 3-1 the final. the kings, flames and jets all have to lose at least twice even if they win. michigan state takes on duke and wisconsin tries to spoil kentucky's perfect season. the wildcats are trying to finish 40-0 and become the first team to go unbeaten since indiana won the national tight until 1981.

the great new taste of cookies and crème. fans aren't loving a statue of lucille ball in her hometown in new york. this statue has been there since 2009. residents say they've had enough. the statue looks nothing like the "i love lucy" star. they hate it so much a facebook page has even been dedicated to getting rid of the statue and a new fund set up to raise $10,000 to make a new one. all right. final weather check. well, we're going to start out cool and end wet for the weekend. the easter weekend and then more rain to follow. here is a look now at our highs today with breezy winds on the coast. only 57. 67 in concord. the north bay will see clouds later on. 65 in santa rosa. light rain for easter sunday very light and then we'll hook for a break on monday.
