an innocent woman becomes a vic of three accused armed robbers in a high-speed bid to outrun san francisco police. i'm katie marzullo. we gibb with -- begin with details on a deadly hit and run. [sirens] >> this picture shows the chase last night. the suspect's car hit and killed bridget checker. cornell bernard spoke with her father and has the latest.

>> reporter: such a sad story. bridge jet klecker's family are def calculated by her loss. her -- devastated by her loss. her father says she was simply crossing the street when she was hit by a speeding car. the police need to find the suspects responsible. the wild police chase through the streets of san francisco. three minute suspected in a string of recent armed robberies running from cops in a stolen car. this witness hatt had never seen anything like it. >> could hear the emergency vehicles and watched a four-door sedan hitting every bump. >> when the chase crossed the street bridget klecker was struck and later died. her father, john, spoke with us by phone from his home in north carolina. >> she had a great sense of humor, was always fun to be

response during a busy tourist weekend. >> reporter: sirens and police shouting at emergency crews put the u.s. capitol on lockdown. >> came over on the loud spoker the capitol was locked down. >> reporter: cell phone footage shows the response on the west front of the building after man shot himself. >> one girl started to ask me something. she was looking over my shoulder and i saw him fall. >> reporter: the map had on a blue backpack, sign taped to his hand, suitcase nearby. capitol employee were told to take shelter and stay put. the area declared offlimits. >> we have cleared the area and re-opened the united states capitol. >> they're professionals. they know what they're doing. they made sure we were safe.

student groups say a lot of students stayed away from scheduled events. >> 200 people didn't show up today who had signed up. >> re did take it seriously and thought, better be safe than sorry. we issued the warning. >> some groups scheduled to use campus facilities today cancelled their events. dozens of people gathered for a rally and march in north charleston, south carolina, this afternoon, hour after walter scott's funeral. the african-american man shot and killed while running from a white police officer during a traffic stop a week ago. scott's family spoke of the father of four's life and say they hoch his death will be a catalyst for change. >> change has to come. something has to come out of this death elm didn't die in vain. >> their son is going to be remembered for changing the way that we look at each other. >> officer michael slager stopped scott april 4th for a broken taillight. relatives suspect scott took off in fear of going jail again over

missed court payments. slager has been fired and charged with murder. i is the second day of the three-day closure of van ness avenue between geary boulevard and post street, where crews are building an underground walkway to connect california pacific medical center's future hospital and medical office building. >> installing effectively temporary structural walls. that's all we're trying to accomplish this weekend. those walls will be part of the temporary structure that will allow us to continue work all summer long, underneath that, and install a permanent tunnel structure. >> detours have caused traffic delays in the already congested area. lanes will re-open at 12:00 a.m. monday, two more closures will take place, april 24th through april 26th and labor day weekend. up next, an update on a cement spill in an east bay creek, and keep it clean the effort to prevent a popular spot in san francisco from getting

a passenger on an air canada flight says a stranger tried to strangle him mid-flight. [shouting] >> sit down! >> all the things that can happen on a play. passengers yelled at him when they accused the attacker of trying to get out his seat. he wrapped the cord of his head phone around another man's neck. people jumped in to help. when the plane landed in atlanta police escorted the man off the

flight for a mental evaluation. a chaotic brawl involving police and a family in a walmart parking not arizona end with one man dead and an officer shot ask wounded. one suspect got ahold of the officer's gun. police releasedded the video of the fight. officers tried to use stun guns to stop a large family from attacking them. police were called to the scene on a report that members of the family assaulted a walmart employee. five people were arrested. the u.s. forest service says it will look into an expired permit that supplies nestle with water from a national forest in california for its bottled water business. an investigation by the desert sun found that the company's permit to transport water across the san bernardino national forest expired in 1988. forest service officials say they will investigate the permit issue and do an environmental review after concern were raised amid the state's ongoing route
