broadcast center this is abc 7 news. >> good afternoon and thank you for thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz and i'm larry beil and we begin live over the scene in berkeley where hundreds of protests are are gathering as part of a national movement today. the organizers are calling the fight for 15. this is an effort to get the federal minimum wage increased to $15 an hour. look at all of the people out there. protesters are in full rally mode right now in the plaza on the uc berkeley campus. they're planning to end their march at the mcdonald's on the corner of shattuck and university avenues. katy joins us now from berkeley. >> reporter: the rally started about an hour ago and in that time we watched hundreds of

people pour in from various unions and labor activists here. i'll show you the scene behind me as they are rallying on the uc berkeley campus and as you mentioned the fight for 15 is an effort to get the minimum wage increase and typically when we talk about minimum wage stories we're talking restaurant workers, but this fight for 15 also includes child care workers, cashiers and many more low-wage workers. the other component of their fight is unionizing and i'm joined by one of the organizers, mary kay with sciu. what kind of difference would unionizing make for the folks behind me. >> workers need a seat at the table with multinational corporations like mcdonald's and walmart in order to make sure they have schedules and hours when they raise their wages and a good job is if they can negotiate over skedchedules and get pay for sick time and they can fight for retirement and health care for everyone in this

country and that's why we're so proud to get the union. >> thank you, mary kay. it's a complicated component. it's not just about the dollar amount here that we're talking about and to give you some perspective, oakland recently increased their minimum wage and the impact for small business owners is still being measured and their minimum wage went up to 13 to $25 an hour and we spoke to the owner who speculated a 5% increase in menu pricing and a 15% surcharge cost to cover the cost. >> we spend a lot of time plugging in numbers and saying what's going to work? what's the best way? what can we do? >> jack stewart with aunt mary's cafe says it's too early to say if it hurts his small business and he does say for the restaurant industry how tips are distributed would be more effective in making sure how back-up house people are paid

reich joined that group which rallied and chanted in unison for over 15 minutes. the demonstrators convinced two workers there to abandon their shifts and join the minimum wage protest. >> hundreds in los angeles took part today in the nationwide wage movement. >> there were protests in front of fast food restaurants across southern california. home health care workers joined in these demonstrations and their union has been in negotiations with l.a. county since last month. >> hundreds gathered in the streets of chicago and among the group fast food workers who walked off the job today. five rallies were scheduled today in chicago and demonstrators hoped today's turnout was some kind of change saying the system is broken. >> one of the biggest demonstrations across the country took place in new york city. look at all of these people. they filled the streets carrying signs along with a huge banner. this demonstration lasted for most of the day. fast food workers who took part there said making ends meet is nearly impossible on new york state's $8.75 minimum wage.

turning now to our weather and we're in for a warm up. >> spencer christian here with our first look at the accuweather. >> a certainly lovely and mild day, and under sunny skies. here's live doppler 7 hd and the cloudless sky and a few thin wisps way up high and we have the beach hazard statement in effect tomorrow morning into friday evening and the point of large breakers and you can see the wave heights between 9 and 11 feet. even though the weather will be nice and mild today, going to the beach may not be the safest thing to do. a lovely view out toward the golden gate and 63 degrees in san francisco and low 07s in san carlos and 59 at half moon bay and another lovely view of the western sky from the east bay hills camera and we're currently at 79 degrees and napa, petaluma and 68 at mid-70s and fairfield

concord and livermore. looking across the embarcadero, from the rooftop camera, here is the first forecast and it will be clear and cool, bright skies and cool in the early morning hours and warming up tomorrow from 70 at the afternoon at the coast to about 86 in the warmest inland locations. larry and ama? >> thank you spencer. >> touching moments across the city of boston this afternoon as people paused to remember the victims of the boston marathon bombing's two years ago today. >> at 2:49 eastern time the exact moment when the bomb exploded the city sits still as people pay tribute to those affected by the attacks. >> two survivors of the bombings threw out the first pitch at the red sox game and the game came it a halt at precisely 2:49 as the entire stadium observed a moment of silence. >> ladies and gentlemen, we are one boston. ladies and gentlemen we are boston strong. ladies and gentlemen this is our city. let's play ball!

>> last week a jury convicted dzhokhar tsarnaev of plotting the attack with his brother who was killed in a shootout with police. jurors will go back next week to see if he will receive the death penalty. 260 people were injured in the bombings on april 16 2013. >> a florida postal worker is in police custody after he landed a small, one-person helicopter on the grounds of the helicopter today. this prompted a temporary lockdown and raised serious security concerns after the gyrocopter landed. it was undetected by radar. abc news reporter karen travers joins us live from d.c. karen? >> good evening larry and ama. it is quiet at the capitol but earlier a chaotic scene. that gyrocopter landed right behind me in the parch of grass and the west lawn of the u.s. capitol. it's an area that's known to many americans as the praise

where presidential inaugurations happen every four years and every winter you see video and pictures of kids sledding here at the u.s. capitol. today a senior u.s. official tells abc news that the gyrocopter was flying at a relatively low speed pretty slow and was less than 150 feet which means it wasn't getting picked up by radar and that's raising a lot of very serious questions of what would have happened if this pilot posed a violent threat? a bizarre scene sparked panic and chaos. a man who says he was delivering a political message to congress flew a gyrocopter and landed it right there on the lawn. the capitol went on lockdown traffic in the area shut down. >> how did that guy even get in here here? that was the big thing. that's what everybody was talking about. >> law enforcement officials brought in a robot to clear of the scene of any hazards. >> one man is in custody and charges are pending. the man piloting the gyrocopter was identified as doug hughes a

mailman from florida who drove from there to washington. >> i got a call about a year ago last summer from a gentleman who said i am going to commit an act of civil disobedience, no one is going to get hurt. i thought long and hard about this and thought about a way that i can make a show to bring attention to campaign finance reform. >> this is just the latest in a spring of security incidents in the nation's capital. on saturday the capitol grounds were on lockdown after a man shot and killed himself a few blocks away as crowds of tourists flocked to the national mall for the annual cherry blossoms. in late january a quad kopter device crashed into the grounds in the middle of the night. the president and first lady were not at the white house at the time. they were traveling overseas. it turned out that the man operating the drone was a government employee who admitted he was drinking when he lost control of it.

>> reporter: doug hughes was carrying 535 letters, one letter for every member of congress. he'd been planning this for at least a year and he told the reporter he wasn't sure how far he would get before he might be taken down by law enforcement officials. a senior republican lawmaker told abc news that if he'd gotten any closer to the building he would have been taken out. reporting live from the u.s. capitol, karen travers, abc 7 news. karen, thank you. chp crews are on the scene of a fatal crash in richmond between a big rig and motorcycle. sky 7 hd is live over the scene. two right lanes of westbound 80 are blocked right now near central avenue and this is video earlier from sky 7 hd and you see traffic is moving in the other two lanes. the crash happened just about 3:00 this afternoon and no word on exactly how it happened or when lanes will reopen. cal-osha is investigating a fatal accident in a construction site in petaluma.

this is i haved why from sky 7 hd and 27-year-old jared was killed by a pipe rolling downhill. he instinctively tried to stop the pipe, but it was too heavy and crushed him. a fence stopped the pipe before it rolled down the highway. overfield worked as a pipe layer majora & gill oat construction company for eight years. >> they had no option, but to vaccinate their kids. >> the committee postponed a vote on senate bill 277 after several lawmakers came out against that measure. parents lined up inside the capitol this morning to voice their opposition. their main concern is that too many kids would be pulled out of the state's public schools. lawmakers worried the bill as it is does not address how kids who are not vaccinated could get an education any way other than being home schooled. >> i have two children who i

it covering venezia san ramon, san mateo and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. a necropsy will determine how a whale died. scientists from the marine mammal center said the whale showed no sign of significant trauma. it could take up to six weeks to determine the cause ever death and scientists determined what to do with the carcass.

>> hbo is not happy with users of periscope. it's this new live screaming service owned by twitter. it turns out periscope users were illegally rebroadcasting the show game of thrones, and online palos sunday. hbo officials immediately sent takedown notices to twitter demanding that users have their accounts suspended. periscope's terms of service make it clear that copyright infringement is not allowed. repeat violations will not be tolerated. periscope should more to deter this kind of behavior. >> mark zuckerberg may be different. zuckerberg says he spent 50 to 60 hours each week to do real work in the office or in meetings. many ceos famously work long hours and have little time for their families. zuckerberg conceded that if the definition of work were expanded he'd have to say he works his whole life. >> only 50 or 60 hours. try newscasting!

>> yeah. >> in other news, pain relievers could blunt your emotions. >> and there's a new reason to avoid tanning beds. jane king has more in today's wellness report. >> kind bars are tasty, but are they healthy? >> the fda says while they do have nuts and dried fruit they also have chocolate and peanut butter and it was the saturated fat content that caught the fda's attention and it is not healthy. kind will have to change the packaging or risk having them pulled from the store shelf. acetaminophen is a common ingredient in pain relievers can also dull both positive and negative emotions. researchers say rather than pain medication tylenol and other pain relievers could be an all-purpose emotion reliever. although they do caution more study is needed. >> they want the number of people to use tanning beds despite the warning of cancer. there's a new concern viruses who say bacteria and viruses in

>> the satellite image shows what you probably already figured out and high pressure is in control right now and will be for the next couple of days and tuesday through saturday and here's a look at our temperature over the next couple of days and tomorrow will be the warmest day along the coast and around the bay with highs up to about 70 on the coast and around the bay. but on friday as coastal cooling begins with the arrival of fog. the warming continues inland where we'll see upper 80s on friday and probably on saturday, as well. so let's move along and take a look farther into the forecast future. it looks like the hints of showers about a week away and maybe by wednesday of next week we'll see showers moving in our direction which would be a good thing. overnight look for clear skies and cool conditions and lows in the mid to upper 40s and tomorrow sunny and wrarm in the south bay and we'll see high temperatures. on the peninsula upper 70s to

lower 80s and 71 at pacifica. downtown san francisco will have a high of 75 tomorrow and up in the north bay we'll see 83 in santa rosa and 81 in sonoma, and we'll see upper 70s, and 82 in castro valley and 81 in oakland and in the east bay will be the warm effort region with the highs up in the mid-80s in some looks and 84 in antioch and 83 at livermore and here is the accuweather seven-day forecast and inland highs will peak friday and saturday and coastal cooling begins friday and the highs will reach the low 60s friday and saturday. gradually into monday and sharper cooling on thursday and wednesday as clouds thicken and there's the little hint of showers, just a chance next wednesday. larry and ama? >> thank you spencer. i want to take a live look now at the 360 camera. this is on eastbound interstate 80 just past berkeley and the 85-80 split and as you can see here traffic is moving along

fo this is abc 7 news. here are today's headlines where you live at 4:30. fast food workers nationwide are marching to bring attention to how much they're paid. this is a live look from sky 7 hd over berkeley. workers want the minimum wage to be raised to $15 an hour. as you can see all these people are gathered at sprouts plaza and will be marching to mcdonald's on university avenue. you can see just how many people have gathered there. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony is in sacramento for a hearing on a bill that would require parents to vaccinate their children before they can attend public school. the senator opted to wait until next week for the education committee vote on the bill after

the chair warned it would probably fail. we'll have a live report coming up on abc 7 news at 5:00. crews are conducting a necropsy on a whale that. we will also have a live report at 5 dlok. now to san francisco where police are looking for the burglars who stormed into a san francisco store, and the break-in could be a part of the trend and vic lee is live with details. >> ama, it was a daring robbery of a large, collectibles show case and retail store in the mission district. unlike the rash of store robberies where the thieves have been using a car to break into stores. these criminals, if you will used an old fashioned tool to break into this store. the brazen robbery happened earlier this morning at 4:30.

some of the store's 40 security cameras captured it all. >> they used people that were on the streets as lookouts while they did their work. they came up in their vehicle after someone let them know that it was fine to come over. >> the robbers gather outside the store. one of them uses a sling shot to smash the front glass door and then they all storm into the building and begin pillaging. the 1700 square foot building is rented to some 60 dealers who sell porcelain jewelry and a wide range of vintage collectibles. inside, the thieves are quick. they begin taking items off the shelves, displays and countertops. haiko who doesn't want his last name used for fear of retaliation was hard hit. >> the whole shelf was removed that had jewelry, mostly rings and brooches and mostly sterling and a little bit of gold. >> there had been half a dozen high-profile robberies in san francisco in the past six months where thieves had used their

cars as battering rams. the boldest crash and grab and the wells fargo museum heist in january where thieves drove an suv into the glass entrance. police are looking to see if this latest robbery is linked to the others. >> we don't know if this is just a copy cat except not using a vehicle, but this seems to be the latest trend. >> so far there have been no arrests in the wells fargo caper, and none in the others either. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> thank you. >> a 25-year-old man is dead after a police shooting that played out on live television in houston. investigators say the man pretended to have a child in the car with him. the 30-minute chase began when the man refused to pull over for a traffic stop and along the way he called police and told them he had a child and a gun in the car and would hurt the child if the chase continued. while the situation came to a head when the suspect crashed his car into another vehicle in the intersection you saw right there and then into an suv and the man tried to get into the

car and leaned back in and that's when two officers opened fire killing the suspect. no child or gun were found in the car. the police chief in arizona is defending the actions of one of his officers seen on video running down a suspect with his car. a warning, you may find the video we're about to show you disturbing. dash cam video shows is the officer running down a man with the shotgun on february 19th. the man identified as mario valencia suffered serious injuries, but was out of the hospital two days later. police say valencia is a suspect in a crime spree and allegedly stole the shotgun and a box of ammunition from a store earlier in the day. officers took action after he fired a round in the air. the police chief said the split-second decision likely saved lives. >> we certainly don't know what the individual was going to do but we can't allow him to get to the point where he enters the office complex. we can't allow him the opportunity to take somebody who is in the parking lot hostage. >> i find it ludicrous to say

that we're saving this man's life who is suicidal by almost killing him. i mean, he could have died. valencia's attorney insists the police could have done more to deescalate the situation without using this much force. aaron hernandez will spend the rest of his life in prison. a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. marcy gonzalez with reaction to the verdict. >> after the verdict was read. >> guilt of murder in the first degree. >> former new england patriot star aaron hernandez glared at the jury who found him guilty of all counts in odin lloyd's murder appearing to mouth the words, you're wrong. his fiance and mother embracing in tears and his victim's family breaking down. >> i forgive the hands of the people who had a hand in my son's murder. >> lloyd was shot to death execution style nearly two years ago in a massachusetts

industrial park. he was hernandez's friend, dating his fiance's sister and prosecutors offered no motive and the murder weapon was never found. the mountain of evidence including video of hernandez with what appeared to be a gun was enough to convince them that he plotted the murder and pulled the trigger. >> we didn't need the murder weapon. now less than two miles from gillette stadium where the 25-year-old had a promising career and a $40 million nfl contract, hearnrnandez will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole. >> aaron hernandez may have been a well-known new england patriots football player however in the end the jury found he was just a man who committed a brutal murder. >> the defense will appeal the conviction. meanwhile, hernandez still faces a separate trial for a 2012 double murder in boston. marcy gonzalez abc news, new york. coming up a cautionary tale for anyone who uses nail polish

dry weather, high temperatures and strong winds are creating dangerous fire conditions in southern california. red flag warning will be in effect until 8:00 tomorrow night for many of the mountain areas surrounding los angeles. a small fire raced through dry brush in glendale yesterday. extra firefighters are ready to respond if needed but residents are concerned. >> the wind itself doesn't bother me. it's the concern of a fire starting. >> there's concern for the paths of the high winds and the high chance for fire and just keep praying that no fire. >> the chance of a wildfire in california typically peaks in the fall, but fire officials say the ongoing droughts have made wildfires a year round concern. >> rain would be nice, but not much in sight. >> spencer christian is here with a look at what's ahead for us. >> i'm afraid no rain in sight at the moment but we do have lovely weather coming our way and we can enjoy that with the concerns about the drought. here's live doppler 7 hd and we

have sunny skies right now a very mild and pleasant day. conditions for the game time at at&t park giants taking on the rockies again and game time 7:15 and it will be 52 degrees at game time. very pleasant and nice weather for baseball and it will be a bit stormy in the southeast and in the central plains, but most of the remainder of the nation will be sunny and dry and sunny and warm with highs in the low 80s from chico to sacramento to fresno to los angeles and here in the bay area we'll have sunny and mild to warm day tomorrow. highs up to 70 on the coast and low 80s on the bay and 80s in the warmest and inland locations and the high temperature range. downtown livermore and we'll see mid-80s in livermore thursday through sunday and saturday will be the warmest day with the high of 86 and the record high for saturday's day in livermore, and

covering daley city, los gatos and the bay area, this is abc 7 news. >> a warning for anybody who uses nail polish remover, under certain conditions it can cause dangerous flash fires. it can ignite without the liquid ever touching the flame. maria schiavocampo has more. a common beauty product unexpectedly starting fires. from the bel air texas fire department and the houston station ktrk in just two minutes in an enclosed space, the vapors from a bowl of nail polish remover sparked a large fire even though the liquid itself never even touches the flame. the fumes caught on fire in the air around her and her clothing

actually caught on fire. >> that's what firefighters believe happened to one texas woman. this morning the 20-year-old is recovering from third-degree burns on more than 50% of her body after her nail polish remover caught fire. officials say the victim was using nail polish remover near a candle when the fumes ignited causing a sudden and dangerous flash fire. this texas woman is expected to be in the hospital for another two or three weeks. >> any flammable such as oven cleaner, hairspray any flammable that would generate any kind of vapors. those are the things you want to look out for. >> while nail polish remover does have a warning label stating it's extremely flammable, keeping it away from flames and heat there have been other accidents. just last month a cigarette and nail polish remover are believed to have caused a large fire in glendale, arizona. devastating this condo and just last year a 28-year-old illinois

the final bird rescued from that mysterious goo in the bay is free again. international bird rescue today released the bird back into the wild and it is the last of the 165 birds to be treated after they were found coated in a sticky substance, but found along the east bay shores back in january. the substance killed more than 200 birds. >> we're just super happy that we've been able to complete this response. we do wish we'd have been able to save more birds. i think if we would have gotten to those birds sooner it would have helped, but some were

franchise. they have an exclusive franchise that includes san jose. up to this point lower courts have ruled against san jose and they're representing san jose at no expense think the court may take it up because two of its justices have articulated positions. one of them was justice sonia sotomayor who ruled in favor of players during the baseball strike in 1995. at that time she wrote an opinion who said baseball was a monopoly. also justice samuel alito in an article specifically said that the former opinion of oliver wendell homes should be addressed and it's outmoded. >> it was holmes in 1922 who gave the exception. he said he doesn't talk about legal issues. in the meantime san jose's city attorney points out wolf is intdz in the five-acre site and the caltrans stadium.
