marching from the cal campus to mcdonald's at shattuck and university avenue. aishs 7 news reporter katie is live from the campus. >> word has gotten out that the protest is large. the mcdonald's shattuck shut down in anticipation for the hundreds of protesters. you can see that those protesters are spanning two city blocks. they are marching peacefully and officers are shutting down the streets as those protesters make their way from the south plaza on the uc berkeley campus to this mcdonald's on shattuck. labor interests rallied as part of the fight for 15 movement to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour and they're fighting to unionize which would help low-income workers battle for health benefits and better wages and improve working conditions. we as a nation come together and have a living wage for people.

everybody will benefit. >> and to give you some perspective on this complicated issue, the city of oakland increased this minimum wage to $13.25 an hour and we spoke with the owner of aunt mary's cafe and he started in the industry as a dish washer and he said when minimum wages are mandated and everyone increases prices to cover their additional labor costs. >> it was certainly a challenge. we spend a lot of time plugging in numbers and going okay, what's going to work? what's the best way? what can we do? >> the wage increase on his business and let me give you another look at the crowd from above, sky 7 hd showing as they are peacefully marching as we said we have representation from many unions and they're marching to different labor chants and it is a pretty impressive showing and we are here at the mcdonald's on shattuck which is their end location and judging by where the choppers are located they

should be only a few blocks away and they'll be sure to bring you that when they arrive and a couple of people are pulling up to mcdonald's that are you surprised to find that it is lost and that's what they'll find for live we're live in berkeley katie utas, abc 7 news. an issue that's become emotional for parents on both sides. senate bill 277 would require parents to vaccinate their children before they can attend public school. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony joins us now from the state capitol. laura? >> hi, cheryl. this was a very emotional and divisive issue. the hearing room here at the capitol was packed and there was tension on both sides and in the case of the senator sponsoring the bill, we understand he's received online death threats. >> thank you for making sure that kids like me don't get sick at school.

>> he was front and center testifying before a state senate education committee in support of a bill that would require children to be vaccinated before they could attend public school. the first grader is a leukemia survivor with a compromised immune system. his parents have lobbied for mandatory vaccines so rhett can safely attend school. >> and we had the disney outbreak. co sponsored senator richard pan, a pediatrician. >> we are clearly at the point where our immunity is dropping too low and children are at risk. >> i strongly oppose this bill. >> others argue it should be up to parents and the doctors whether their children are vaccinated. >> i want the right to decide what is put in my children's bodies and what is not. they have slipped once and i think it's time we stop pandering to science and really say to protect our children we need stronger immunization with

public schools. i feel strongly about vaccinations. >> some senators voiced support for vaccines and also concerns about the current bill's provision for educating those who were not immunized. >> are we going basically be setting up a framework of regulations that forces them outside of the public education system. >> when it became clear the bill would not make it out of committee in its current form, senator pam opted to delay the vote for at least a week. in sacramento, laura anthony, abc 7 news. cal-osha is investigating a fatal accident at a construction site near highway 101 in petaluma. 28-year-old jared overfield of nevada was working on a widening project when he tried to stop a large pipe that broke away. the size and the weight of that pipe was too much and it rolled over and killing him. a fence stopped the pipe from rolling him right on to the highway and you can see how large that pipe is. overfield worked as a pipe layer

for gel on they construction in marin county for over eight years. >> a man is wanted for allegedly exposing himself to three people at the shopping center last month. palo alto police are looking for this man who they describe as an asian and hispanic man and that's the surveillance picture and the incident happened at 8:00 in the morning and police are asking anybody with information to please give them a call. police are investigating a possible kidnapping attempt after a man followed an antioch high school student who was driving this morning. the man approached the girl at the 7-eleven at the contra loma boulevard and followed her to the high school in antioch. this is the third incident in antioch in the past five weeks. a shocking attack on a little girl in san francisco's marina district. a 5-year-old girl was assaulted by a homeless man as she was walking between union and octavia street. the man was walking with her

mother and when he grabbed her by the neck and placed her against the side of a building. >> scary obviously. officers were on the scene within minutes and the suspect was taken into custody. police say he will likely face several felony charges including false imprisonment and battery on a child and the little girl had a minor injury to her neck and spent the day in the hospital. the whale carcass was discovered yesterday at maury point on the south end of shark park state beach. that's where abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman joins us with more. >> this is a fascinating story on multiple counts. first of all we don't know yet what caused the whale to die. there was a lot of research going on today. a lot of cutting. a lot of -- well, just a lot of cutting and blood in the water and that's the other point that's sort of interesting. surfers here are concerned about the blood in the water and the meat and the sharks that it might draw. otherwise, a lot of people stood

on the beach today to watch the entire process. >> look! look at the whale! >> it was not the kind of whale we like to see. quite the opposite. >> does anybody know exactly what happened yet? >> a logical question when left with the carcass of a 49-foot long sperm whale that appears to have died at sea and then washed ashore next to maury point in pacifica. more than a curiosity it's an endangered species and a rare occurrence that northern californians have seen 18 times in the past four decades and hence the arrival of researchers. >> lifetime day. a bucket list kind of day. >> having them float on shores is pretty uncommon. >> the most important work that happened on this beach today was a bit too graphic for the evening news or any general audience. when the tide went out, researchers like caitlin brown of the marine mammal center dug in through blubber and then muscle tissue and they went

deeper looking for a cause of death and maybe a trend and we're looking for things like hemorrhage trauma bruising and we're assessing the bone structure and making sure that all of the bones are in their natural position and then we want to get into the interior organs. >> all the while, this crowd grew. it climbed, it watched and it speculated. >> you know, i remember the one in tus qaa der on, but that was 20 30 years ago. >> and now there's this one, an event that's not a happy occasion, but a 49-foot long reminder that there's so much more out there, another world just offshore. in pacifica wayne freedman, abc 7. >> crews are still at the scene of a deadly accident in richmond. sky 7 hd was over the scene on westbound 80 near central avenue. according to the highway patrol a motorcyclist was killed after the rider lost control and skidded across several lanes. a big rig trying to avoid that motorcycle then overturned and hit an suv.

two other people were taken to the hospital with other injuries. two lanes are still closed and they are expected to reopen in about an hour. >> this is a terrible tragedy, obviously and an inconvenience for so many drivers. the 360 camera has a different vantage point of that accident scene that cheryl was just talking about. we're heading toward richmond here and our photographer and driver in this car have literally not moved, apparently in about 20 minutes' time headed toward richmond because of this accident. a couple of lanes still closed as you heard. let's turn around the other direction. traffic is moving fine heading the opposite direction, but you can see how far the backlog is. it's really, really a mess and has been that way for some time and it will take a while before that clears out. >> thank you so much. just ahead, sex ed under scrutiny in the east bay. >> we encourage young people to have all the facts. why critics say students are reading and writing about the wrong thing. also ahead beyond the mess.

sex education is taught in almost all high schools but one east bay school district has received complaints about the content and the messenger, planned parenthood. tonight these parents are trying to persuade the high school district to stop contracting with planned parenthood. leann melendez joins us from walnut creek. leann? >> this issue first surfaced back in november and the school board then decided to invite

parents to have an open dialogue and that's why we're here. we're also here in the dilva ye education center in walnut creek because it is very spacious and a lot of people are expected here tonight. the school district has relied on planned parenthood to teach sexual education to all ninth graders. >> we're the experts on sex education planned parenthood are in 14 counties in northern california. those parents are the first to raise any objections to their course. it's a much more liberal view. wendy is a citizen activist who has been the voice of parents opposed to what planned parenthood is teaching. she said almost glorifying sex at an early age. >> teaching about sexual rights for children. they have attitudes and are

attempting politically and culturally to change attitudes about sex. those parents hope the district will consider finding another organization. the district would not go on camera, but planned parenthood did. we're not here to substitute family's values and we're here to give the facts and that's why we work very closely with parents in every school district that we're in. >> it's state of the art and they're doing it at other schools and i think it's important for the kids to learn it the other way. >> if you're unhappy with how it's being presented, voice some positive actions for change rather than just say stop it. the board will listen to parent no changes are expected tonight. >> in lafayette, lyanne melendez nbc 7 news. four east bay high school athletes may face prison time for their role in an armed robbery last week. authorities have charged the four clayton valley high

athletes as adults. according to media partners of the contra costa county times, they wore masks and toll marijuana and phones from a drug deal xer dealer and friend last weekend in concord. they will be arraigned next thursday. baby food and concerns it could seriously hurt your baby. the department of agriculture is recalling beechnut classics. it warned the food in the 4-ounce jars might be contaminated with small pieces of glass. the flavor in question was made december 12th and estimated nearly 2,000 pounds of that food was sold nationwide. >> we have more consumer news as well. california energy officials want new standards that could cut your utility bills. 7 on your side's michael finney. >> we've seen energy star rating for washer and dryers and officials are saying let's do this. or at least something similar for high-tech devices and

computer monitors in this desktop computer are idle for much of the day and they continue using electricity and now the california energy commission is proposing new standards to cut that and manufacturers modify it to power down when no one is using them. california has taken the lead on the environment and this is part of that process. >> officials say the new efficiency rules would save california residents $460 million per year in electric bills and the stricter standards would take effect over the next three years. the food and drug administration says makers of a popular kind bar have to stop claiming the bars are health pep the fda says some of the bars have more saturated fat than allowed for foods claiming to be healthy. kind bars says that may be true but the it comes from nuts. the company says the fda's definition of healthy is too

narrow. however, kind bar agreed to modify the label, though it will not change the recipe. if your smartphone drops or falls in the water, will it still work in the smartphone warranty company based in san francisco tested the latest samsung and apple phone. square trick is the name of the company and it provided this youtube video shows phones getting a lot of abuse. a robot applying 110 pounds of pressure to bend the phone, dropped them from six-feet high and dunked them for ten seconds in the water. samsung did best however, i would still recommend you avoid dropping bending and dunking your phone. >> i drop my phone all of the time. i won't say which brand it is. >> it's still working. >> michael, thanks. san francisco is trying out an old-fashioned solution to the ever-growing trash problem at

delleres park. the city estimates it collects 7,000 gallons of debris on weekends. it set up what it's called an ecopop-up and it's a dumpster for ways that it can be composted or recycled. >> they'll be staffed by volunteers and we can help people really -- dispose of waste in a responsible way. >> there are tons of garbage every week and new recyclables are being placed look the park's path and two-thirds of the waste can be composted or recycled. >> police in washington, d.c., were on high alert after a man landed a gyrocopter on the capitol lawn. i spoke to david muir about that earlier today. >> i know you saw that as well the pilot who flew undetected through restricted airspace landing on the lawn of the capitol, tonight authorities reveal they were prepared to take him down and guns at the

and we do have something to warn you about beginning tomorrow morning. there is a greater risk of rip currents, sneaker waves and large breakers from sonoma county to monterey county, thursday morning to friday evening and the hazard statement up as a long period of swell is heading in this direction and current wave heights 9 to 11 feet. remember, if you do enjoy the warmth at the coastline which you're looking at at if the tan cam, don't get too close to those waves and never turn your back on them. 65 in san francisco and 68 in oakland and san jose and morgan hill, 72 and morgan hill went up to 73 and half moon bay at 73. downtown oakland basking in sunshine and we do have 70s from santa rosa, concord and livermore. you're getting a little bit of a breeze and the view from the east bay hills camera showing you passing high clouds right now. coastal cooling begins on friday and it is going to be cooler in all areas early next week.

sacramento is refusing to remove marijuana from the list of the most dangerous drug. mueller ruled that marijuana should remain classified as a schedule 1 drug which are defined as drugs with no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse and heroin and lsd are also schedule 1 drugs. the judge's ruling maintains the distinction that states with legalized marijuana use are violating federal law. a big change for the 8,000 students taking the mcat this week. the new admission test for medical school is longer by three hours. the number of questions has just about doubled going from 144 to 230. one test covers psychology sossology and concepts such as social inequality institutionalized racism and power, privilege and prestige. the vice dean at ucss says the new test mirrors the evolution of health care.
