well, good thursday morning to you. we begin with the bizarre security breach at the u.s. capitol. a tiny one man helicopter easily violating the most restricted air space in the world. >> the gyro copter touched down on the lawn of the capitol. about 100 yards from the building packed with our lawmakers. at the controls, that guy. a florida mailman, hoping to make a political point in dramatic fashion. bazi kanani in washington for us. just when you think you've seen it all in d.c. >> reporter: indeed. good morning, t.j. good morning, reena. that pilot called his mission project kitty hawk. driving from florida and flying his unusual aircraft 80 miles from pennsylvania right into the no-fly zone over washington. a gyrocopter buzzing over monuments and alarmed tourists. >> this is not good, people. >> reporter: heading straight

towards the u.s. capitol. >> we both looked at it and said, oh, where the heck is that going? >> reporter: the tiny aircraft landing on the west front lawn, immediately swarmed by police. the area on lockdown. >> get out of here now. >> reporter: while the bomb squad checked for weapons and explosives. but there was no harm intended by the pilot. >> the guy giving us a thumbs up and just flew on by. >> reporter: he's 61-year-old doug hughes. a postal worker from florida who posted this video online showing the training for the stunt he began more than a year ago. he planned to deliver letters to lawmakers demanding campaign finance reform. >> i would rather die in the flight than live to be 80 years old and see this country fall. >> reporter: hughes knew he could be shot down in restricted air space. but he did notify secret service about his plans. agents spoke with him and a friend a year ago.

>> he wanted to do something that was spectacular. i was against it from the beginning and to the end because i knew how dangerous it was. >> reporter: hughes' flight, within 10 yards of the capitol building, raising new concerns about security. >> how does an individual in the air space get that close? >> reporter: his tiny aircraft was undetected as it entered the restricted air space. norad is working to see how their systems missed it. >> can we expect security changes? what about possible charges? >> reporter: well we do know that hughes is facing potential civil and criminal charges. possibly steep fines, possibly prison time. as far as security changes, we're not exactly sure what those will be yet. we do know since 9/11, hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on air defenses. so really the key question this morning is did the technology fail or is there some sort of gap in the technology?

>> all right, bazi kanani for us live in washington. thank you, as always. >> and stay with abc news for the latest on the the security breach at the capitol. team coverage later on "good morning america." we turn to the stunning fall from grace. aaron hernandez, the former patriots' superstar tight end with a $40 million contract will now spend the rest of his life in prison. a massachusetts jury found the 25-year-old guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of his friend, odin lloyd. hernandez's mother and fiance sobbing openly in court. as the verdict was read. feet away, the victim's mother also in tears. >> my baby's footprints is in my heart forever. he was my strength. i love him dearly. >> jurors spoke after the sentencing saying they found the evidence against hernandez compelling.

but listen to this now. hernandez still facing a double murder charge for a drive-by shooting in boston. he'll serve his sentence in a prison just a mile away from the patriots' stadium. police in arizona are defending the officer who intentionally slammed his squad car into a suspect. mario valencia survived the incident after the cruiser ran him down and flipped him into the air. the police chief defends the decision, saying valencia was armed and dangerous, after going on a three-hour crime spree robbing a 7-eleven breaking into a church and stealing a rifle from walmart. to politics now. democratic presidential hopeful hillary clinton returning from her trip to iowa. she spent two days there. she'll be flying back to new york, not driving in the now famous van of hers. that black van that's nicknamed scooby. new jersey governor chris christie says he's not ready to throw his hat in the republican ring just yet.

well it sure looks like he's giving it some serious thought. looking like a candidate everywhere he goes these daysings it seems. yesterday in new hampshire, this was at a town hall meeting. he fielded questions about health care, foreign policy, and a whole lot more. he'll be back in new hampshire tomorrow after spending today in new jersey. concerns in iraq. as isis fighters press closer to a key city. militants captured three villages yesterday near ramadi. it's the most significant threat to the city from isis to date. but iraqi officials say their troops remain in control. the offensive came as iraq's prime minister was in washington asking for u.s. support to battle isis. and today is holocaust memorial day. for two minutes, sirens blared, everything stopped. as israelis remembered the 6 million jews killed by the nazis. this year marked the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps. the south in for another day of severe weather today. a lot of strong thunderstorms yesterday brought large hail damaging winds, heavy rain

well the passengers could see land. they just couldn't get to it. after their puget sound ferry lost power. the boat drifted for awhile then was brought into port by a tug boat. the ferry was just put into service last summer. this thing's new. we're told it will be back in service this morning. now for a look at today's road conditions. there could be flooding and road closures in the center of the country. roads will be wet in the south and up into the ohio valley. watch for wet snow in the rockies. if you're plying, airport delays most likely in houston, new orleans denver atlanta, dallas. a wealthy new york cardiologist is accused of putting a hit on another doctor so he could steal his business. >> he first hired someone to torch the other mans a office.

then he paid to have the man beaten up and then murdered. turned out the hitman was an undercover cop. we're getting a look at the fiery end of the latest spacex rocket mission. looks like things are going well. appears to touch down safely. then it tips over and explodes. the company says it was going too fast to land safely. this is the third time spacex has tried its rocket recycling test which it believes will significantly cut the cost of space travel. we seem to have an epidemic of helicopters landing where they're not supposed to be. this is the surprise everybody gone of this beach outside san diego. the pilot brought the 100-foot chopper down after a low oil pressure light came on during a routine training mission. landing was so smooth it doesn't look like anything was wrong. people thought it was a movie shoot. they i got to it patched up quickly. it flew away a few hours later.

a new york man suffered serious burn injuries while trying to get rid of bed bugs in his rental car. he sprayed the front seat with rubbing alcohol and then lit a cigarette. the man was able to escape but not before he was burned. this happened in theoff the coast of ireland. a tourist fell about 40 feet. other tourists pulled her to safety. she was flown a hospital. she made it out and suffered a broken ankle. well swimming legend michael phelps big news. he's made it official. he does want to go to the olympics one more time. he returns to competitive swimming today. he was on a six-month suspension after a second drunken driving conviction last fall. he wants to prove he's still got it.

was shot. janet? yes, good morning to you. the san leandro police department will be conducting an internal investigation to determine if the officer who opened fire was following policy when he shot at the suspects. this started yesterday afternoon. several san leandro police officers including an undercover officer were in oakland investigating a burglary in the area. in an unrelated case the officers spotted a stolen car with two people inside. police tried to stop the driver but officials say she kept driving. she drove on the sidewalk and hit several parked cars and a fence. police describe what happened next that led to the shooting. >> officers discovered a stolen vehicle. as they attempted to stop the stolen vehicle that vehicle rammed into the officer's
