with live breaking news. and that breaking news is in fresno. you're looking at fiery images of an explosion at a police gun range near highway 99. officials say there are multiple burn victims. a nearby hospital confirms at least two people are in critical condition. witnesses report seeing flames shooting up in the air up to 200 feet into the sky. our sister station kfsn says the ground was so hot they had to move the evacuation site to a nearby horsefield. >> authorities say crews were doing line work and hit a natural gas line. highway 99 at herndon avenue is closed in both directions and train service in the area is not running. fresno police say there are also evacuations in the surrounding

area, but it is primarily an industrial area. they are not saying how many people are affected. the fresno fire department posted pictures of their firefighters on the very scary scene trying to put out those flames. for those of us here in the bay area this is an eerie reminder of the san bruno gas explosion that killed eight people nearly five years ago. good afternoon everyone. i'm katie marzullo in ar ama daetz. >> we will continue to fol leigh that on air and online and for now we'll move on to other news and police are asking people who used a particular restroom at a walnut street starbucks, laura anthony is live in walnut creek with the story. >> reporter: it was around this time on tuesday that a store employee here at the starbucks found a video camera hidden in a unisex bathroom. let's just say the discovery isn't sitting well with those

who might have used that restroom. >> a bathroom is kind of a sanctuary, sort of a sacred place. >> to a person, customers outside this walnut creek starbucks reacted with disappointment and disgust to the fact of a venetia man who planted a camera not once but twice in the past two months. >> any thoughts about whether you might be on that? >> it's not impossible. >> its not impossible. >> walnut creek police arrested 35-year-old jacob turner at his venetia home. thursday a store employee found a camera like this one attached underneath the sink in the unisex bathroom. it had been recording for about 90 minutes between 2:30 and 4:00. this is a big invasion of privacy. we feel that people that have been caught on the camera have a right to know that they've been caught on camera and they have an opportunity to see justice get done. police believe turner also

planted a camera in the same restroom in february. that one was discovered when it fell on the bathroom floor. according to neighbors in venetia, turner has lived with an older couple on oxford way for just a couple of months. he remains in a richmond jail on $65,000 bail. in walnut creek laura anthony abc 7 news. police in milpitas say this man is accused of 12 different burglaries at the great mall. cash us brown got caught inside the mall during the latest heist tuesday afternoon. he's accused of stealing credit cards and cash from store employees employees' purses. several people including a baby were sent to a south bay hospital today after a car plowed right through the front door of a trader joe's store in lossals los altos. the car crashed right through the door and into a checkout counter. all of the injuries were minor

it's threaten the fish that make it up river. wayne freedman is live in sonoma county. wayne? >> good afternoon katie. take a look at the russian river behind me. take a good long look and see the brown riverbank and 34 years of covering news in the bay area except for last april, we have never seen the russian river this low and this drought story has more to do than just lawns and swimming pools for fish who depend on the water from this river it's a matter of life and death. >> it is a contradiction to the natural order of things but necessary right now. a next across the creek and a pipe leading to a trap and inside of it tiny little fish. for biologists from university of california and seagrass this is a daily ritual around mill creek. >> on a good day we can get upwards of a couple hundred. a good day and a bad time for california's endangered co-host salmon now in a drought. what we're trying to do is count

them and see how many of them survive the winter season and are on their way out to the ocean. >> if you ask marisa, she'll tell you all about the battle to save them. they are 1-year-old salmon almost all of them from state hatcheries this year in a race this year against a drought that threatens to dry out their streams and land lock them. >> they can't access the ocean. so if they can't get out they're going to die. >> and if they die? >> then we lose that year of fish. >> 128. >> today the team pulled about 50 smelt from the stream and they went through a series of measurements. >> 23.6. >> and then a snip of the tail to catalog dna for past and future reference. only one came here by natural means and it got special treatment. >> what we're going to do is actually put a tag in him so that we can track him through the river and see if he comes

cloud to be seen and wall to wall blue out there and it will be changing. the forecast does call for coastal clouds to develop and fog around the bay tonight and the summer spread temperature wide this weekend and the location will be very important as to how warm you get the next 48 hours and then next week we're turning a bit unsettled with the weather pattern and we'll talk about that in one second. as you step outside 82 in fairfield and san francisco, 63 degrees and fremont warm at 80 degrees. if you are headed to at&t park later on tonight, first pitch 7:15 against the diamondbacks and lots of sunshine and as the sun sets at 7:47 and that breeze continues and it will feel chilly with the temperatures dropping into the mid-50s and make sure to grab the jacket later tonight. you do notice as you're exiting the game around the bay and the fog is developing and it will stay with us overnight and even to the later morning hours by 11:00 and still rather foggy and

around the bay turning mainly clear with the loss of sunshine on the bay. radar will show you a broad area of high pressure over the weekend and this ridge will bring us weekend warmth and keep the storms at bay. future temperatures will show you location is key. right along the coast of the cloud, upper 50s to lower 60s and the inland valleys and nice and toasty in the 80s and a ditto forecast inland spots place to and warm in the 80s around the bay upper 60s to lower 70s. overnight tonight, we'll see the fog developing and in the 40s across the region and if you are headed to the cherry blossom festival in japan town, we'll have the lingering temperatures starting out in the 50s and by 2:00 we're bright we're breezy and the temperature pretty comfortable at 67 degrees and elsewhere for your highs on your saturday and 86 antioch up to 69 san francisco and 72 oakland and a warm 80 degrees in san jose. accuweather serveven-day forecast

broadcast center. this is abc 7 news. here are the headlines where you live as we approach 4:30. flames reportedly shot 200 feet into the air after a gas line exploded at a peace officer's gun range in fresno. at least three people were injured, two critically. there are evacuations in that area and school busses and trains have been rerouted. highway 99 was closed but is now open again. a fresno county employee hit the gas line, causing that explosion. in sports, the warriors back at work today getting ready for the first game of the nba playoffs tomorrow. the good news the warriors will be at home where they went 39 and 2 this season. today players relaxed going through their drills getting ready for the unibrow anthony davis and the new orleans pelicans. you can only watch that game right here on abc 7 with our coverage beginning at noon tomorrow. morgan hill residents have been asked by the state to cut their water use by 35%. reporter david louie tweeted this photo, a perfect example of how bad the drought is.

the pile of sand is usually there for people to fill bags in case of flooding and that's gone unused so far this year. san francisco police officers accused of sending racist texts may be immune to being fired. vic lee tweeted today turns out a federal judge's order did not prevent sfpd from investigating racist texts two years ago which may jeopardize disciplinary actions and vic joins us from the newsroom to explain exactly what that manies. >> reporter: larry what this means is that the lawyers for the cops who faced discipline will use the officer's bill of rights limitations statute as self-defense and while the legal fighting has been going on and abc 7 news has learned that the police department will begin giving cases in which these officers were involved to the d.a. for review. >> it raises questions about whether or not these officers have credibility when they say this person did this or that.

>> that could be hundreds, if not thousands of cases which district attorney george gascon's office will have to review. 14 officers are facing disciplinary action from a text messaging scandal. police chief greg sir wants the police commission to fire eight of them including a captain, six officers whose texts were not as offensive face other disciplinary actions. >> it's transparent for both the d.a.'s office as well as the public defender's office and the police department working together to see if those cases have any biased policing. >> meantime the legal wrangling between the lawyers for the officers are starting to reach a head. san francisco's internal affairs unit reportedly received the offensive texts in 2012. defense attorney michael raines says the statute of limitations for police investigations is only one year and that the police commission therefore, cannot discipline the officers. a federal judge did sign this

protective order preventing disclosure of certain information in the case, but he did not mention text messages. chief greg sir maintains that the federal public corruption probe of former officer ian forminger and two other cops shielded their department from investigating officers who were texting. police spokesman officer albyes parza. >> we want to make sure we don't hinder the investigation in any way or there's any cross-contamination, if you will so we want to make sure they complete their investigation. >> abc 7 news has learned that the attorneys for the officers will file their motions in this case by the end of this month. again, they're saying the officers should get off on this legal technicality called statute of limitations. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> thank you, vic. in santa rosa police are looking for a man who tried to kid independent a 9-year-old girl.

investigators ss said the man watched the girl go into a restroom and grabbed her wrist when she walked out. this happened yesterday after school. the girl was able to kick yell and run away and the man left in an older, light brown car with a cracked driver's side window. staying in the north bay, petaluma police are trying to find these three women. they're accused of stealing $6,000 worth of designer wallets and purses from the coach store. it happened tuesday. the women left in a hyundai sonata with a partial california license plate 707. >> a man who train with terrorists appeared in court. he was monitored by law enforcement officials for months. abc news reporter karen travers with more now from washington d.c. a shackled abdirahman mohamud in a soft voice he pled not guilty on terrorism-related charges. >> he received terrorism

training there on weapons combat and tactics. his intent for the united states was to kill americans, that included u.s. military police and anyone in uniform. >> mohamud's mother and sister made no comment after they left the courtroom. >> are you surprised? >> reporter: but his attorney said mohamud was scared. >> what i have here is a young man who is accused and that's how we're approaching this case as we approach every case. the notion that the feds never lose is also b.s. mohamud is a recently naturalized u.s. citizen from somalia. he left with a one-way airline ticket to greece. during a layover in turkey he disappeared and slipped into syria. this scenario is what counterterrorism officials say they fear most. >> law enforcement tries to track them but difficult to track everybody. >> intelligence officials say a cleric in syria directed mohamud to return to the united states and carry out an act of

terrorism. >> the benefit of being american is he has good paper. that means he's able to travel and he has a u.s. passport, that is the goal. >> mohamud arrived back in the u.s. last june and authorities immediately began tracking him. his lawyer says mohamud has no criminal record and the government's case is one-sided. karen travers, abc news washington. in iraq a car bomb exploded just outside the u.s. consulate today in erbil, killing at least three people. there are no american casualties and isis claimed responsibility for the blast. the parents of an 8-year-old killed in the boston marathon bombings are urging prosecutors to end their quest to have convicted attacker dzhokhar tsarnaev executed. bill and denise richards say sentencing tsarnaev to death can relive the most painful day of their lives. their son martin was one of the

hands-free to a whole new level. a state trooper in nebraska recently pulled a trucker over and he noticed the driver was wearing headphones and it turns out the driver had taped his cell phone to the steering wheel because he wanted to watch a soccer game that was streaming on his phone. don't do that. unfortunately, for the driver he paid the price for this low-tech innovation more than $200 in fines. he's lucky it wasn't a lot more than that. >> lucky he didn't get into an accident. >> yeah. >> getting your first job is a big deal, but it was a really big deal for 19-year-old ben sunderman of mckinney, texas. >> what does it mean, ben? did you get it? >> i did! i got a job! i got a job! that's so wonderful to see. her son had applied for a job at the embassy suites hotel that helps children with disabilities transition from high school to the working world. ben's internship begins in

west right now until crews move the truck off the highway and the highway patrol says that could take hours. >> the trader joes in loss altos is closed for the day after the car plowed through the front door injuring some shoppers the driver was pulling into a parking spot about noon when the engine revved. the car crashed into a check out counter and fortunately all those injuries were minor. fire investigators say a two-story house fire may have been caused by roof workers. firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the home located on arguello street and that was at 3:20 today. they remain on the scene checking the walls and spaces for any possible spread of flames. >> late today marin county banned all outdoor residential burning. county officials say the drought is making the fire danger too high. >> the state water board was supposed to release updated drought regulations right about now, but we just got word that we'll be issued tomorrow morning instead. ma
