live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> we are holding out hope he will be okay. he's a really strong guy. just praying he will be all right. >> the family of a missing boater hoping for a miracle tonight. two people have died and two are missing. the boat found today wrecked on a north bay beach. good evening, everyone. the coast guard began searching for the boat when it didn't return to bodega bay after a fishing trip. tonight we learned three of the boaters are from santa rosa. our reporter is live with the latest developments. >> reporter: all four of those were very close friends. actually two of them were next door neighbors to each other up in windsor. the other two live in santa rosa.

all four families stunned about the crash. from sky 7 hd, you can see the wreckage of the 21-foot boat. the four aboard were supposed to have a leisurely salmon fishing day. the family of one on board says they are praying for a miracle bl we are holding out hope he will be okay. he's a really strong guy. just praying he'll be all right. >> reporter: they are the family of 28-year-old ryan vaio he is was the youngest and is missing. coast guard crews recovered the bodies of richard hargreaves and another was recover today this has been an extensive search with crews covering dozens of miles in the ocean. it began on friday because someone aboard the fishing don't didn't show up for an appointment. the search continued they

just before 3:00 this afternoon witnesses say the victim was on the sidewalk in front of the school when several people got out of a light-colored honda civic and started attacking her. the victim was stabbed several times but is expected to be okay. a few minutes later and few blocks away, a 7-year-old boy was seriously hurt when he ran in to a moving car. it happened near d street. the child hit the side of the car. a helicopter took him to children's hospital in oakland with severe injuries. the driver stopped and is cooperating with authorities. california's facing one of the most severe droughts on record. new numbers dick katetateing how much individual communities need to cut back on water, some as much as 36%. >> reporter: the mandatory water conservation begins in june. it all depends on how much water you used last summer and where

breaking news right now. firefighters battling a wildfire in riverside county and evacuation orders are in effect. the fire began in trees near the dam and quickly spread to 175 acres. 300 homes are threatened by the fire and residents are told to leaf the area. so far no word of injuries. a cigarette left in a potted plant on a balcony could be to blame for an apartment fire in san francisco today. the fire broke out at pine and powell streets just before 9:00 this morning. fire crews arrived to find flames on the top floor balcony that spread. they cut a hole in the roof for

renovation and quickly knocked down the fire. no one was hurt. >> oh my god. >> reporter: cell phone video captures the aftermath of a gas line explosion along highway 99 at the fresno county sheriffs gun range. it happened friday afternoon. the blast sent 11 to the hospital. four released today, two are in critical condition. investigators say the driver of a front loader hit a 12-inch gas line causing the blast. pg&e said it was not notified of construction there and did not mark the gas line. the last call at caps coroner san francisco tomorrow night. abc 7 news was at the north beach restaurant tonight as it prepares to close after more than 50 years. the current owners have run the powell street eatery the last 30. they say a contractual snag with their landlord forced them to close their doors. instead of feeling sad they want to celebrate one last time with long-time customers. >> that's the hardest thing. that's the hard part.

millions of jellyfish-like creatures are washing up on the coast. you can see thousands of them at ocean shores in washington state. experts say as sea surface temperatures rise, the creatures migrate closer to shore and winds can blow them off course and actually on to the land. abc 7 news was in richmond today as dozens of bay area volunteers took part in the california state park foundation 17th annual earth day clean up. volunteers picked up trash and removed invasive plants. the statewide program resulted in 335,000 volunteer hours, worth more than $6 million in park maintenance and

improvements. san francisco dolores park debuted the eco pop up today. recreation and park crews replaced recycling and composting bins to keep trash out of this the park and land fills. it generates 7,000 gallons of trash a weekend. volunteers and staff will separate the trash during the pilot program which is open noon to 8 p.m. and on holidays. back from oracle arena. part of all of the excitement tonight. >> it was something else. >> and maybe a little nail biting. how are your nails? >> they are gone. they handle new orleans in game one. curry led with 34 points.

volunteer sheriffs deputy who shot and killed an unarmed suspect earlier this month. tulsa county sheriffs records show 73-year-old robert bates was pro-initiate firearms and dozens of other training courses. bates charged with second degree manslaughter said he mistakenly pulled out his handgun instead of a stun gun when he killed eric harris. a narrow escape for students on a bus trip in massachusetts. you can hear the panic as college students rush to escape a burning bus with seconds to spare. the students were in a caravan of four buses heading to boston for a lunch cruise. the bus began smoking about 15 minutes in to the trip and quickly burst in to flames but nobody was injured. firefighters responding to a house fire in idaho thought they heard screams of people inside but they were actually hearing parrots. the firefighters say the parrots

as abc 7 news reporter matt keller shows us many of those children would not have made it here if not for the heroism of an american pilot. >> reporter: the end of the vietnam war was just the beginning for a few thousand over fans taken away from the violent in their country. 244 escorts 16 crewmen and two flight nurses wouldn't make it to its destination in california. 40 miles from saigon and 23000 feet high, the rear cargo doors blew off. the c-5a galaxy plane lost altitude quickly. the pilot dennis trainer crash landed in a field. >> i said good-bye to my wife because i thought okay i'm done. then we came to a stop. >> reporter: captain trainer spoke to us at his home fairfax virginia. >> the airplane broke in to parts. you can see where the fire is

burning. the wings were tail were some place else. the cargo compartment where many were with seated was crushed in the landing. 138 people mostly children were killed. an investigation blamed the crash on a maintenance issue with the cargo doors. captain trainer was awarded the air force cross. his flying skills are credited with this not being a worse tragedy. >> ordinary kapt captain's life and we -- that was made extraordinary by the mission. made tragic by the fact we lost so many people. we lost 138 people. 176 went on to live long and prosper. >> reporter: one of the 176 survivors is carrie briggs. she was four years old when she was put on the doomed baby lift flight. we caught up with her in southern california. >> recently i was given a piece

of insulation of the plane. >> reporter: her memory is limited. she doesn't remember getting on the plane. >> once it crashed the help to try to met me out. i remember the fire that happened. seeing fire in the distance of the different pieces that have crashed. >> reporter: carrie remembers being taken to a medical facility, checked out and put on another flight. she landed four days after the crash. >> i don't remember being on the next plane but i remember my adopted father hung on to me the whole time. >> reporter: she said she is grateful for the baby lift leading to a new life and family. >> history. definitely part of my history and american history. so that's great to see. >> carrie and captain trainer have met. they attended a reunion in southern california. captain trainer says survivors
