good monday morning. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm ryan smith in for t.j. holmes. >> we begin with two big stories including another breach at the white house. >> first, what appears to be the latest case of home-grown terror. more arrests on u.s. soil. the suspects with possible links to isis were picked up yesterday in two major cities. abc's susan saulny has the latest from washington, susan, good morning. good morning, reena and ryan. this latest operation by the joint terrorism task force focuses solely on young people who have tried to travel to syria to fight alongside isis and other militant groups. at least six people were taken into custody sunday. four of them picked up in minneapolis and two in san diego. the arrests came as the fbi attempts to uncover isis sympathizers.

looking to attack within the u.s. authorities have also being trying to crack down on emerging new threat, identifying recruiters who are raising money and using social media to persuade impressional young men and women to join the brutal islamic state. in the past two years, some 50 americans have been radicalized or accused of trying to join isis. authorities insist there's been no specific threat to the american public. they plan to share more details in a news conference today. >> and, susan, we're getting word of another possible threat breaking overnight, another fence jumper at the white house? >> that's right, the secret service has confirmed that someone has once again scaled the fence on the south side of the white house, this time carrying a suspicious package, it happened at about 10:30 last night, the intruder was quickly arrested. the package was checked out and declared harmless. this latest incident comes amid plans to add steel spikes to the fence to make it harder to climb. it follows a string of embarrassing breeches,

one fence jumper made it all of the way inside the white house. ryan, reena. >> thank you. abc's susan saulny. also breaking overnight, a lot of storms is moving into the east third of the country, after pounding the deep south and the southern plains this weekend. >> tornadoes and strong winds damaged buildings and uprooted trees, knocking out power to thousands. large hail fell in many areas damaging vehicles and houses. some of the hailstones were as big as tennis balls. >> there was also heavy rain in western north carolina last night, resulting in some flash flooding, at least one traffic death was blamed on the wet roads. forecasters also were worried about tornadoes, but there were no reports of twisters, just high winds. these storms are heading right toward the big cities of the northeast today. let's check in with steph davis. >> thanks, ryan and reena. it will be a soggy monday across the eastern seaboard. a storm system arriving bringing showers and thunderstorms to the i-95 corridor.

now, the heaviest of the rain will target washington, d.c., philadelphia and new york city. we can see up two inches of rain falling throughout the day on monday. a second wave rolling through monday afternoon, firing up strong thunderstorms for pittsburgh baltimore and d.c. gusty winds and hail are the major threats. ryan and reena, back to you. >> steph, thank you. fire officials in southern california say the smoke generated by a wildfire that threatened hundreds of home will take days to rescue. it forced the evacuation of more than 300 homes. bone-dried vegetation hasn't been thinned out in decades. no one has been injured. another blaze in south florida has burned hundreds of acres. the huge amount of smoke seen by drone. the brush in the area is extremely dry. officials say it takes one spark to start a fire. no structures have been lost and no injuries reported. it's unclear what sparked the

blaze. now to the unfolding tragedy in the waters of the mediterranean sea, hundreds of people believed killed in a shipwreck, searchers are looking for the migrants who were crammed onboard a boat. some were locked in the cargo hold of the ship that was traveling from libya to italy. the u.n. says that this could become the worst disaster involving migrants. en route to europe. no apologies this morning from the mailman who deliberately violated washington's no-fly zone. and landed a gyrocopter on lawn of the capitol. despite 2 1/2 years of planning, he said that he didn't expect to make it all the way without being stopped. more from abc's mara schiavocampo. >> reporter: gyrocopter pilot doug hughes is grounded, back with his family in florida. >> i was in shock. >> reporter: his wife and 11-year-old daughter speaking out about their dad's dangerous stunt, what he calls an act of civil disobedience protesting campaign financing. >> i was just downright proud.

he's a patriot, you know? he did it for the country. >> reporter: though hughes shared his plan with a local reporter, he says his family knew nothing about it. >> it was intended to be a plan where only i took the risk, but it was very lonesome. >> reporter: the 61-year-old mailman now delivering new details about the trip. >> at no point did i feel that it was not a good idea. >> reporter: revealing that he took off from gettysburg, pennsylvania, flying 80 miles through maryland, straight into washington, d.c., using landmarks like the world war ii memorial and washington monument to navigate. hughes says he was surprised he actually made it to the capitol. >> i had expected to be intercepted on the way. >> reporter: if hughes had been detected flying through restricted airspace, scrambled fighter jets would have demanded he land or face being shot down. a risk this father says he was willing to take. >> how did i weigh that?

tomorrow in new hampshire. it is a day of reflection for millions living along the gulf coast, it was five years ago that the deepwater horizon oil rig exploded, killing 11 workers. it became the worst offshore oil spill in the nation's history. much of the gulf has recovered. but scientists say they found a marine blizzard seven times the size of new orleans on the ocean floor, that blizzard made of mucus oil, residue and plankton threatens other marine life. also happening today the 119th running of the boston marathon, about 30,000 participants hope to cross that famous finish line, many of them lined up on a carb-loaded pasta dinner. the mayor of boston was on hand helping to feed all of those hungry runners. runners and fans will be out there in cool temperatures with a little bit of rain expected. the sentencing phase also on the boston marathon bombing trial will start tomorrow. one school kid in north carolina will probably always remember his third-grade picture.

breaking news the mother and daughter vanished in new york city have been found. iona costello and her 14-year-old daughter emily were found wandering around an uptown neighborhood this morning. they planned to send a week in the city watching broadway shows. costello had been battling with her late husband's older children over his will. and a s.w.a.t.'ing in new jersey was caught on camera. while a man was streaming live video on the internet, a police s.w.a.t. arrived at his house, they had gotten anonymous call of a stabbing and hostage situation. there have been several of these hoax calls in the area in the past few weeks. dr. mehmet oz is fighting back against charges by some of his colleagues at columbia university who say he promotes quack treatments. this friday's episode of his tv show will be devoted to address addressing the allegations. the top doctors say members of

the public are being misled and endangered and that oz is motivated by financial gain. "batman" star ben affleck asked producers not to reveal that some of his ancestors owned slaves. that's according to e-mails released last week by wikileaks. the information did not air, but producers said that was because there were more interesting stories. other guests include anderson cooper were revealed to be descendants of slave owners. now to sports, tim tebow is expected to a sign one-year contract with the philadelphia eagles. he hasn't played in the nfl since 2012, but since then, he's been working in tv, including on "good morning america." and the playoffs are in full swing, both in basketball and hockey, it's a sports lovers' dream. >> some of sunday's highlights now from our guys at espn. >> i'm john buccigross. >> and i'm steve levy.
