peaceful. san francisco police arrested this man 37-year-old ali walker is charged with assault for reportedly walking behind a park ranger and hitting him in the head with a glass bottle. the ranger was hospitalized with minor injuries. overall, there were five arrests yesterday and police issued 15 citations. two thieves are want fored for stealing a 16-year-old's cello in san francisco saturday night. police are looking for a man and woman who broke into the car. a woman is scouring through the car while her male accomplice is acting as a lookout in their getaway vehicle. cello was worth about $8500. a developing story in the east bay about a meningitis scare at st. mary's college. laura anthony joins us now from the county health department with late details. laura? >> hi, cheryl. we just got done speaking with a public health doctor and a

representative from st. mary's dlej and they did confirm that the st. mary's student does have meningitis. the test shows that they have meningitis, but not that particular strain. the student became seriously ill yesterday morning and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. as a precautionary measure st. mary's had extra cleaning of areas where the student had been. here's what the public health doctor had to say. >> we're suspecting meningococcal disease and we just don't have laboratory confirmation. in the absence of laboratory confirmation, we treat it based on the old school medication of what's the symptom and what is the projected disease. >> we work diligently to administer prof lactics to approximately 60 community members who were in close contact with the affected student. >> reporter: beyond that st.

mary's went ahead and cleaned some of the classrooms in the areas where the student had been. public health officials are confident the school has taken the necessary steps to prevent an outbreak and in the meantime we're told the student who was seriously ill. in martinez, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> new surveillance video this afternoon shows a woman trespassing at mineta san jose airport last month and this is 20-year-old deanna near the fence on march 31 the and the ushgs ups driver spotted her a short time later and this was the fifth security breach in less than a year. the airport is in the process of raising the height of the fence from 6 feet to 10 feet. the department of homeland security is opening a new office here in the bay area and it is hoping to hire some of silicon valley's best and brightest. the proposed new office will help tech companies provide and

improve cybersecurity. the government also hopes to improve its strained relationship with the technology industry. speaking in san francisco today, the director of homeland security, the secretary said that cybersecurity must be a partnership between government and private sector. we need each other and we must work together. disturbing new video today out of southern california shows a confrontation between a woman and a deputy u.s. marshall. 34-year-old beatrice paez says she was out for a walk sunday afternoon in southgate when she stumbled on a large federal operation. the marshals were in the process of arresting several bikers and they did not appreciate paez recording the operation and you can see one slammed it to the ground and kicked it. a neighbor recorded that from across the street. the marshalls say they are reviewing that footage. >> one san francisco county jail will soon be equipped with body cameras. ross mirkarimi announced the deputies are expected to start

using those cameras this year. no official start date has been set yet, though. city officials believe the cameras will encourage proper police conduct. across the bay, all livermore police were equipped with body cameras. all of its officers were trained over a three-day period on the use of those cameras. >> a public safety group is suing smart watch companies for a billion dollars. the coalition against distracted driving filed suit claiming that watches were a danger to motorists. they want apple samsung, microsoft and gooing toll pay for an education campaign. british researchers reported drivers looking at smart watches have a slower response time than even those smartphones. the companies have not responded to the lawsuit. >> we have much more ahead. coming up a late afsh vote. san francisco just kicked the circus out of town. plus -- >> there is a lot coming out of the store. >> call it the bucket brigade

the bay area's biggest water agency say a court ruling on california's water fees will not affect them. yesterday an appeals court found the water rate structure in san juan capistrano was unconstitutional. the city charged customers for using more water. while the court says it violates voter-approved prop 218 which prohibits government agencies from charging more for a service than it costs to provide it. east bay mud, marin municipal

water district all tell us they're not affected. they have all tiered rate plan, but the prices are based on the cost of providing water service. the contra costa water service does not have tiered rates and san jose water company is a private company so it is not affected by prop 218. santa clara will consider desal nation to help find a water source during the terrible drought we're in. today the county board of supervisors approved a proposal to explore water-generating technologies. desal nation is effective, but it's extremely expensive and can cause environmental problems and there are at least 15 plant across the state with three already in operation. a lot of folks in the bay area are trying to make a difference in the drought by saving their shower water. some are calling it the bucket challenge. abc 7 news reporter joins us from oakland to explain. it's a new one wayne. >> good evening, cheryl. that challenge may be taken on by every single person behind me. take a look.

that is oak lasched behind us on east bay mud has asked consumers to cut water consumption to 2013 levels and each then customers will be paying more no matter what due to a drought surcharge. you might want to take a close look at that water bill and you might even want to buy a bucket. >> open the mail hold your breath. in that regard every californian has much in common with pamela. >> when was the last time you looked at your water bill this closely? >> a week ago. >> she lives in kensington and not a drip system. >> i love my garden, but these days it is a bit of a liability. >> pamela may be a poster child for water conservation. she used a household total of 193 gallons of water a day last month. well below the 246 gallons east bay mud has allotted most households and yet pamela will be paying more due to a drought surcharge. >> the average customer will see about a $12 increase on their monthly bill.

exotic animals and they protect animals from inhumane treatment. the ban applies to bears, anseals and dolphins and it applies to movies and television shows. san francisco meantime could ban chewing tobacco from all sports fields from the city including at&t park. supervisors voted to approve the ban today. smoking is already prohibited. the new ordinance would add chew and snuff to the list. supervisors says the use of tobacco sets a ban example for kids and a final vote is set for next week. >> the largest specialty arts and crafts chain store in the country is being sued by the federal government. the consumer product safety commission filed a complaint today against michael's stores incorporated. michael's knowingly sold glass vases that shattered in customers' hands sometimes when they would live it from store shelves. customers suffered serious

injuries from broken glass including permanent nerve damage and severed tendons. a sausage company is recalling 30 tons of chicken sausages sold mostly at trader joe's for good reason. >> they may contain shards of plastic. >> no one was hurt and let's give you that headline. no one has been injured, but a product is being taken off the shelves. k.m. foods issued the recall after two customers found small pieces of plastic in their sausages. the recall includes al fresco brand, apple maple chicken sausages bearing the code number 9709. they have expiration dates of june 13th and june 20th and also included in the recall are packages of the trader joe's brand sweet apple chicken sausage with code number 9605. the affected products expire april 22nd, 25th and 29th. i posted recall and refund information you need. all of that is at abc 7

it's the onshore wind in combination with the marine layer gusting to 32 miles an hour with fairfield out of the southwest right now and we'll keep the wind direction going in this manner and that's what's going to keep us on the cool side for the rest of this afternoon. live picture from our exploratorium camera showing nothing, but gray skies and let's take a look at those temperatures right now. they're on the cool side and 59 in san francisco and mid-60s around san yosi and half moon bay, 54 degrees and a life look from san jose where the high temperature only got up to 65 today, but at least they're seeing unsunny breaks. nap a petaluma and the 60s in the inland east bay and well below average and we take a look at the picture from the mount tam cam and this will stick around and it's almost 3,000 feet deep. spotty drizzle overnight tonight and milder tomorrow with sierra, showers and thunder. if you're heading up there do

camping this weekend and keep that in mind. the satellite picture will show you why we're in the deep marine layer pattern and another cold front, although it'sec whattening, it is keeping us in this onshore flow and we'll keep that cool pattern going, but as we take a look behind us, there are a couple more disturbances that will come in and this will also reinforce the marine layer and some days you'll see drizzle and some days you'll see more sun. let's take a look at what's ahead tomorrow morning. you will see some drizzle around. so tonight a lot of cloud cover as we head into the overnight hours and spotty drizzle tomorrow and you might need more time for the commute. to the north we are going to see the potential for isolated showers developing mainly around the clear lake or lake county and sonoma county area and as we then take a look at what to expect tomorrow and it will be cool side. thunderstorms and showers. when you leave home tomorrow morning don't forget a jacket or

vaccine does not cause autism. experts say there's no scientific link between the two but new research validates earlier studies and says the findings should assure parents of the vaccine safety. researchers studied more than 95,000 children to find out whether those at higher risk of developing autism were any more likely to develop that condition if they received that vaccine and they were not. the study appears in the journal of the american medical association. a bill that would make vaccinations mandatory for schoolchildren is set to go for a vote in sacramento tomorrow. >> jerry brown can add snake huntser to his list of accomplish amment accomplishments. he used a stick to hold a large rattlesnake to the ground. he said out here, you never know what you'll run into. the photo was taken in calusa county where the governor owns a rural property. >> many talents right?
