the nfl player who just applied to be an uber driver. well, good morning to you, i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm ryan smith in for t.j. holmes. we begin with a national mea culpa from president obama over a u.s. drone strike that killed two civilian hostages. >> the president is taking full responsibility for the death of two aid workers. american warren weinstein and an italian, giovanni loporto. >> bazi kanani joins us with more. >> reporter: the u.s. has carried out hundreds of air strikes in pakistan. this incident is sure to renew criticism of the cia drone program. the president says there will be a review of the air strike that killed the hostages to try to prevent similar deaths in the future. the air strike deep in a mountainous region of pakistan, carried out january 14th after

officials say the cia had been monitoring an al qaeda compound for hundreds of hours and saw no science that civilians were there. soon realizing, but only recently confirming that two aid work erers were being held there. american warren weinstein and italian giovanni lo porto. >> it's a cruel and bitter truth that in the fog of war generally and the fight against terrorists specifically mistakes -- sometimes deadly mistakes -- can occur. >> reporter: president obama apologized to the hostages' families. weinstein's daughter and family appeared on abc after this video was released. >> if you don't accept the demands, then i die. >> i would tell him i love him and that i think about him every day. >> reporter: the air strike that killed the hostages also took out american al qaeda leader ahmed farouk and a separate

strike that month killed another american that joined al qaeda. >> the streets of america shall run red with blood. >> reporter: adam gadahn was the first person charged with treason against the u.s. since world war ii. though wanted for years, officials say he and farouk were not the intended targets of the air strikes. weinstein's wife blamed al qaeda for her husband's death. but she also said u.s. government support for her family during this ordeal was inconsistent and disappointing. ryan? reena? >> okay bazi kanani, live in washington. thank you so much. breaking overnight, panic at a high school near indianapolis. a stage suddenly collapsing during a show. stunned parents and classmates watching in horror. ♪ don't stop believing ♪ [ screaming ] >> oh, my god! >> the students at westfield high had filled the stage for the grand finale of the musical "american pie."

effect from cincinnati to pittsburgh new york, to d.c. the bigger story will be what's happening in the deep south. we have a moderate risk of possible tornadoes. multiple cells possible to break out. that reaches up towards kansas city, just on the other side of the mississippi valley region. here's why. we have a bad mixture coming together. a surge of warm, moist air coming off the gulf. jet stream in perfect placement with a low-pressure system. this mixture is going to bring us the highest risk of severe weather. damaging hail, frequent lightning strikes. and the potential of flash flooding. reena? ryan? >> thank you so much. more protests are expected in baltimore today. after the fatal injury in police custody. freddie gray was all right when he was put in a police van. but had a spinal injury when he arrived at the police station. he's not the first suspect to be injured during a ride in a baltimore police van. a civil rights group says it will conduct its own investigation into gray's death. former cia director david petraeus has been sentenced to two years probation for sharing classified information with his girlfriend. he must pay a $100,000 fine.

he was sentenced to two years after agreeing to plead guilty to unauthorized removal and sharing of classified material. his career was shattered once the affair became public. the boston marathon bomber's trial moves on to the next phase. prosecutors wrapped up their arguments that will dzhokhar tsarnaev should be executed by video of an 8-year-old bombing victim dying. members of the bomber's family have reportedly arrived in boston and may testify on his behalf. three more women have come forward accusing bill cosby of drugging and raping them. they claim they were assaulted by cosby in se in the 1970s and early '80s. the statute of limitations has run out on their charges. their attorney says they want him held responsible in the court of public opinion. cosby has not commented.

tom brady not showing off his patriotism yesterday. he was a no-show at the white house when the president hosted the super bowl champions. brady reportedly turned down the president of the united states for an undisclosed quote prior family commitment. still, the president couldn't help but poke fun at deflate-gate. the president said he was worried most of his jokes would fall flat that day. he said, he hoped 11 out of 12 would be okay. ouch. >> oh, below the belt. still ahead, the popular ice cream maker pulling a product from the shelves. the health concern now spreading. and the mystery deepens in a midair scare. passengers passed out on a plane. what the airline is saying this morning. plus, brazen burglary caught on camera. a man creeps through the kitchen. wait until you hear where the family was when all this went down.

growing concerns this morning about that volcano eruption in southern chile. fears that the volcanic ash could contaminate water, cause respiratory illness and ground more flights. and chile's president has declared a state of emergey. there is so much ash in the air, it's starting to pollute the air in argentina. thousands have been evacuated. in some areas, the weight of the fallen ash collapsed the roofs of houses. the volcano erupted on wednesday after being silent for more than four decades. for the second time this week, an ice cream maker has shut down production and recalled all its frozen streets. after a random sample tested positive for listeria. jeni's splendid ice cream says it will not supply products

in new england and the rockies. if you're flying, airport delays are likely nest kansas city, dallas, houston, new orleans, and memphis. a mystery in the sky is deepening this morning. the dramatic emergency landing on wednesday in buffalo, new york. >> skywest is now revealing it wasn't just one passenger, as the airlines first said but three, who passed out. the pilots, fearing a loss of cabin pressure, descended quickly. a nurse on board rushed to the passengers' aid. >> they started to feel short of breath. i didn't feel great myself. the flight attendant same thing. everybody in the middle of the flight started to not feel well. >> once on the ground, a total of 12 passengers were checked. skywest this morning says there's no indication of depressurization, which they say would have affected all of the passengers. a serial sniper may be on the loose in northern colorado. possibly taking shots at random cars. one woman was shot and wounded on wednesday while driving along interstate 25. another driver's rear window was shattered an hour earlier. then there were two other

similar incidents in the area. police are trying to determine if there is a link. so far, only one incident is confirmed as a shooting. a suspect is caught on camera burglarizing a massachusetts home. the family, sleeping upstairs. totally unaware that the intruder is inside their home walks through the kitchen, he's taking items, then he leaves. authorities tracked him down through social media. in one of his facebook pictures, he's wearing the same pullover. a violent collision captured on camera in seattle between a car and a train. you can see the white car there turning into the path of the oncoming commuter train. the train slams into the car. sending it into a light pole and trapping the driver inside. amazingly, the driver suffered only minor injuries. no one on the train was hurt. the baskin robbins employee served a double-scoop beatdown to a robber in washington state. the suspect approached rachel bishop demanding she hand over
