live from now on as a woman. >> we learned in a special you just watched that it will be jenner's last interview as bruce. >> it was an education for me and mostly positive feedback for dye -- diane sawyer and bruce jenner. i want to speak of pronouns and it is a sensitive topic. bruce jenner says he is a woman. but jenner did not give a new name and he doesn't mind if people use the pronounce he. the transgender people say that is her trying to make other people comfortable. they can relate to that and much more. bruce jenner says bruce has lived a lie his whole life. >> for all intensive purposes i am a woman. >> reporter: we gathered with the transgender community. teresa sparks says watching his story is like reliving his life. >> i transitioned in mid40s.

worked. alan wang abc7 news. >> the fatal police shooting of a man brought outdoesens of protesters tonight. >> abc7 news was in the mission district as they demonstrated. lopez was shot to death on february 26th after he pulled a knife in a dispute over a bike. police reported he wouldn't drop his knife. the family said that's not true and an independent autopsy shows he was shot in the back. guy six bullets fired from behind while he was unarmed and running away for his life. this is why we have tears tonight. >> tonight the city attorney said the early investigation shows this was an appropriate use of force. the official autopsy is still underway. an attorney for the family filed a lawsuit against police this week. as you have seen here

jenner told diane sawyer his struggle began at an early age. not everyone is waiting until they grow up. tonight we introduce you to an east bay family facing a similar struggle with their youngest child. scarlet is like most 7-year-old girls. >> we will have to do this later. >> less than thrilled to be doing homework before dinner. but scarlet is also different from most little girls. that's because scarlet was born ezra, by logically male. she is a growing number of transgender children in the bay area. >> when did you first realize that maybe scarlet was having some gender issues? >> when she was 18 months. we would send her off to preschool dressed as a boy and she would come home dressed like a girl. it happened for three months. we thought maybe she was getting muddy or painting with paints and that's all they had was the extra girls's clothes. >> and so began this berkeley family's exploration of gender identity and exploration.

>> that christmas ezra was really sad because all he got were legos. he's like, mom, what i really want is a dress. >> it wasn't long before this family realized that while ezra may be anna tom americaly male she was actually fee pale inside. >> before kindergarten she said mom i'm really a girl. >> ever since scarlet has been living as a girl. >> between two years and now seven years it has been a five-year process of really learning. it has not been necessarily a smooth path. we have therapists and others to help us. it has not been easy. there's been a lot of crying and growing as a family. >> one group this family reached out to was emeryville-based gender spectrum. >> we basically do a lot of direct support to families and caregivers. we do a lot of education and training work with schools. >> a growing number of schools

including scarlet's are acknowledging that some kids are not the same on the inside they present on the outside. research shows children who are forced to conform to gender stereo types are five times more likely to be depressed and four times as likely to attempt suicide or use drugs and twice as likely to contract hiv. >> gender is a unique thing to each person that unfortunately in our system it has been put into the boxes of male and female and boy and girl. on an increasing level it doesn't work for a lot of people. >> no one knows how much people struggle with their gender. but the number of schools looking for help is growing. while schools learn how to meet the needs of transgender children, many families are learning too. >> it is fluid and on going. it is not something you can -- you are on a path that you can't change your mind.

from oakland to piedmont. skyline boulevard as we take you down to the street level the yellows and the oranges showing the heavier returns. it is steady rain from heelsburg down to santa rosa and san rafael. we will continue to see the intensity of the rain picking up. san jose seeing light returns. in the sierra nevada chain controls where it is snowing. and we have snow chain controls on 88 as well. temperatures at this hour are all in the 50s except for mountain view at 61 degrees. don't adjust your screen. it is not a fuzzy view because it is out of focus. it is the rain drops from our exploratorium camera. showers through the early morning hours and par sal clearing through midday and we are looking at sunny and warmer weather on sunday. look at the pacific satellite picture. here is the cold front that is coming in and bringing us the wet weather. it sweeps through overnight tonight and we will start to see things moving on out very early on.

here is a computer animation. steady rain with the the cold front,. 1:00 a.m. it is pushing out of the north bay, but it is still pretty wet across other parts of the bay area. by tomorrow at 5:00 it is mainly down in the south bay and out of here before many of you wake up. and then we will go with partial clearing for the afternoon hours. if you have early morning plans you will need the umbrellas. rainfall totals looking at a 10th to a third of an inch. you can't rule out up to half an inch in isolated spots especially along the coast or over the hills. speaking of until 5:00 tomorrow evening above 5500 feet some of the higher elevations could pick up a foot of a snow. the temperatures first thing in the morning are starting out mainly in the 50s. like i said if you have early plans make sure you have the umbrella with you. for the afternoon you will need the the shades as well. 60 degrees in san francisco. 67 santa rosa.
