as you've heard tonight 65-year-old olympian bruce jenner revealed he is transgender. jenner told diane sawyer his struggle began at an early age. not everyone is waiting until they grow up. tonight we introduce you to an east bay family facing a similar struggle with their youngest child. scarlet is like most 7-year-old girls. >> we will have to do this later. >> less than thrilled to be doing homework before dinner. but scarlet is also different from most little girls. that's because scarlet was born ezra, by logically male. she is a growing number of transgender children in the bay area. >> when did you first realize that maybe scarlet was having some gender issues? >> when she was 18 months. we would send her off to preschool dressed as a boy and she would come home dressed

like a girl. it happened for three months. we thought maybe she was getting muddy or painting with paints and that's all they had was the extra girls's clothes. >> and so began this berkeley family's exploration of gender identity and exploration. >> that christmas ezra was really sad because all he got were legos. he's like, mom, what i really want is a dress. >> it wasn't long before this family realized that while ezra may be anna tom americaly male she was actually fee pale inside. >> before kindergarten she said mom i'm really a girl. >> ever since scarlet has been living as a girl. >> between two years and now seven years it has been a five-year process of really learning. it has not been necessarily a smooth path. we have therapists and others to help us. it has not been easy. there's been a lot of crying and growing as a family. >> one group this family

reached out to was emeryville-based gender spectrum. >> we basically do a lot of direct support to families and caregivers. we do a lot of education and training work with schools. >> a growing number of schools including scarlet's are acknowledging that some kids are not the same on the inside they present on the outside. research shows children who are forced to conform to gender stereo types are five times more likely to be depressed and four times as likely to attempt suicide or use drugs and twice as likely to contract hiv. >> gender is a unique thing to each person that unfortunately in our system it has been put into the boxes of male and female and boy and girl. on an increasing level it doesn't work for a lot of people. >> no one knows how much people struggle with their gender. but the number of schools looking for help is growing. while schools learn how to meet the needs of transgender children, many families are learning too.

>> it is fluid and on going. it is not something you can -- you are on a path that you can't change your mind. >> in the future that conversation could include hormone therapy and possibly even surgery. >> i think we are definitely headed in that direction. >> are you hoping he changes her mind at some point. >> we want what she wants. >> it doesn't make sense to wish this child you love is different than she is. >> this summer sandra collins is launching the first summer camp in the nation to provide scarlet and others like her with a safe space to explore their gender identity and expression. to find out more we have posted a link on our website abc7news.com. well, more than 200 teenagers in the hospital enjoyed a special celebration tonight.
