>> it's saturday, april 25th. i'm chris nguyen. it's been a rainy aeroflot the area. this camera looks at highway 101. a live look outside to start the weekend. but overnight this is what it looked like in downtown san francisco. let's send it over to lisa argen for a first look at the forecast. hi, lisa. >> good morning. the rain mass quickly swept through the north bay and san francisco, just mist and drizzle right now. mainly in the south bay pushing out of parts of the east bay. we picked up anywhere from a third inch to three quarters of an inch. you see milpitas that really picked up nearly a half-inch looking at a little more of

rain. and further south into gilroy along watsonville and the central coast we are look at moderate rain and winter weather advisory throughout the day here. temperatures are right at freezing. we are looking at snow from truckee to tahoe valleys and the snow levels about 5,000 feet. it's in the 50s. we have a little built of fog. we will talk about rain totals totals and how long the showers willingner a few minutes. chris. >> thank you. the much-needed rain overnight. here's a look at the rain helping the north bay and the petaluma area. the wet weather may also be to blame for some accidents. take a look at this one. here a car sheared a utility pole and brought down some cable lines around 10:00 p.m. then there was an accident on highway 101 near railroad road in novato around 12:30 this

morning. and the east bay overnight the rain fem pretty hard around highway 24 and miranda and also along main street in walnut streak. big traffic problems along highway 12 in sonoma county. a huge tree fell across all lanes of traffic near glen ellen. the driver didn't see the tree and ran right into it. they weren't hurt. high winds and soggy ground cause it had to come down and it has since been cleared. you can see what is showing up anytime with b. c7 weather app. it's free on apple's app for or google play. we also have news online as abc7news.com/app. now to the exclusive interview watched by millions last night with olympic champion and swimmer bruce jenner. he talked about his decision to live from now on as a woman.

overnight. epicenter was less than 50 miles from the capital city. at least 8 after shocks amount to go 4.5 or greater have been felt following the initial tumbler. government officials say at least 688 people have been killed, hundreds more injured. fremont resident johnson is traveling in the country. he describes the moment the quake hit. >> so i was upstairs in a coffee shop. i was about to put my order in. and it kind of felt like some big trucks were rumbling buy and i wasn't sure about how the building was built so i wasn't too alarmed. maybe it was trucks. then is kept going and got stronger and stronger. >> he tells a. c7 news he was supposed to return home tomorrow but he's now unsure how he will leave the country. local media said some historic teem else have collapsed along with dozens of other buildings in the region. people are believed to be

trapped up the rubble. >> store bucks's computer glitch that closed stores nationwide has been fixed this morning. they say it will be business at usual today. but some customers were turned away were treat it had to free drinks during yesterday's meltdown. >> this is a one cup mocha. >> they are serious about their coffee, and it got pretty serious after a crippling computer glitch at every company-operated starbucks in us and canada. >> i get upset because i need coffee every day. >> starbucks said it was not a hack. it was caused by a computer failure during a daily system refresh, which means stars couldn't take credit or debit rs. many closed early. >> a lot of frustrated people trying to get coffee. especially those who don't have cash with them. >> but some customers without cash say they got three car

this is abc7 news. a bartender who also works as a model is suing bart and oakland police charging that their officers used excessive force while she was being booked at the santa rita jail. she ended up with severe facial injury. abc7 news obtained surveillance video of what happened. >> this is what megan sheehan

looked like march 18th last year, date after st. patrick's day. the bartender and model suffered serious injuries when oakland and bart police officers took her down. >> i don't believe they should have broken four bones in my face and knocked out some of my teeth. >> sheehan ended up at the lake mary bart station after a heavy night of drinking. she's embarrassed how drunk she got, but her crime, she says, does not fit the punishment. >> i never should have got that drunk, but also there are ways to detain someone and not break their face. >> an officer arrested sheehan who admits to being drunk and we link rent. she said she deserves that. but a little while later she was driven to the santa rita jail. you see her in the upper corner of the video. the bart officer standing with her. then an altercation starts and

she's thrown to the ground. surveillance video shows it happened weekly. take a closer look from a body cam. here's another angle a better one. an oakland cop grabs her right-hand. the bart officer takes her left hand and they throw her down face first. her attorney, john scott. >> they knew by throwing her to the ground without having her hands same to break the fall that she would suffer serious head injuries. >> scott believes it was excessive force and intentional. >> she was uncooperative, she was intoxicated and i believe she had to be taught a lesson. in police jargon she flunked the attitude test. >> according to the police report sheehan was violently punching and that the officer guided her to the ground. sheehan and her lawyer dispute that. take another look at the video.

sheehan was lying unconscious in a pool of blood. megan. megan, can you hear me? nurses were called. she was treated and taken to the hospital. vic lee, abc7 news. >> bart officials and oakland police say they cannot comment on the case. it is in litigation. protesters in baltimore will hit the police today demanding former police chief anthony bass step down from his current position as commissioner of the baltimore police department. that's after the investigation into the death of freddy gray yesterday. on april 12th gray was arrested after running from police. at some point he suffered a spinal injury and died a week later. more than 30 investigators are putting together a timeline to help figure out what happened. protesters have called for bass to resign. they say the police department is in disarray. happening now a major detour is in effect in one of the busiest

corridors in san francisco. van ness avenue is closed until southern night at 11:39:00 p.m. crews are building an unground tunnel for the medical center across the street. if you are planning on taking bart to the oakland a's game sunday you might have to plan differently. they are shutting down one station after 7:00 p.m. tonight and to sunday for much-needed repair work. bart will provide bus bus 60s minute delays are possible. muni is increasing service on some of the system's busiest lines. more express bus trips will be added during morning and evening commute hours, and the agency plans to add limited-stop service during the weekend. they he reviewing a new map and

route numbers for new lines as well. there is more information posted on our website abc7news.com. 5:19 the time. some people are sporting some fancy new apple watches right now. the apple watch officially went on sale in some parts of the u.s. yesterday. we put the new technology through some rigorous testing. here's dan ashley. [applause] >> an he will announced the release in march. now deliveries has begun and consumer reports has the watches in their test labs. the apple watch comes in a variety of styles. the sport is made of light weight aluminum with hardened glass. the stainless steel version has a sapphire crystal. they face the same consumer reports test that all watches play. >> a smart wrist is on your wrist where it is exposed to thements and will get banged up.

>> we skill have rain in the south bay. a little bit of drizzle along the peninsula. pretty exciting for this late spring storm. in fact the rainfall amounts not too shabby. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. the sun coming up at 6:21u notice the sharp lines where the rain ends and where it is still going on. we still have a few showers over fremont. it looks like down from san jose, morgan hill, gilroy highway 101, certainly wet around here, and along the coast heavier rain. but in the sierra nevada it's raining at 35. elsewhere 32 in truckee. 35 tahoe valley airport with chains and winter weather advisory through 5:00. here's a look from emeryville. the visibility anywhere from about 3 miles to a half-mile up in santa rosa. you picked up nearly a half-inch

of rain. miranda, .70. a half-inch in milpitas and a third inch concord. san francisco at .44 and rain still coming down in san jose. so far a quarter inch. certainly good news. but by the time the sun comes up it really will be history and we will be looking at brighter skies for your saturday but cool. 355 in san jose. 54 oakland and half moon bay. and another look from this perspective. you notice that it is certainly slick out there. 48 santa rosa with more fog. 53 napa. and about four miles of visibility on the coast, half moon bay. that's where it's going to be particularly breezy today. we look for the sunshine to break out first in the north bay. and look for dryer and warmer conditions for the second half of your weekend. the showers linger this morning. partial clearing today. by tomorrow more 70s. today really just in the 60s. monday will be the warmest day of the work week.

our satellite picture shows quickly the front pushing through. just another hour or two. hung up in the south bay and then we will be looking at increasingly dry conditions. so snow totals really pretty impressive. we still have it coming down here, another four inches in south lake and a total of about 10 inches in kirkwood by the time later on this afternoon. here is the forecast. 5:00. you see the rain from south bay through gilroy and through the next hour it really begins to fall hard. still some mist and drizzle and the santa cruz mountains should see some showers lingering with partly cloudy skies this afternoon. temperatures a little below afternoon. pretty nice day. breezy on the coast. winds up to 20 miles an hour. 57 half moon bay, 63 in san rafael. and mid-60s by about 3:00 in san jose. a soggy start in the south bay now. mist and drizzle on the peninsula. pretty much over in the north bay. you notice the steadily warming

i'm chris nguyen. we have green showing up on live doppler 7hd. here's lisa argen with a quick look at the forecast. hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. it's quickly winding down. here's a look at the east bay. east of union city. east of 680 and the hills the higher elevations looking at some showers. but into the south bay you can see how spotty it is around san jose milpitas. but we still have some light rain here and further south it's more concentrated with gilroy highway 101 and morgan hill looking at the rain. we still have a winter weather advisory in the sierra nevada throughout the entire day. anywhere from a couple more inches to nearly ten inches expected. numbers in the 50s and visibility about 3 miles in spots. the win will kick up. right now we are into the mid-50s, but we will be looking at the rain showers continuing to taper quickly off and push on out of here. we will talk about rainfall totals, the extend the outlook now a few minutes. chris.

>> lisa, thank you. last night 65 year old olympian bruce jenner revealed that he is transgender. genre told apc diane lawyer that his struggle with gender identity began at an early age. this morning we introduced you to an east bay family facing a similar struggle with their youngest child. it's a story you will see only on 7. here is abc news anchor mama dates. scarlet is like most 7-year-old girls, less than thrilled to be doing homework after dinner. but she's different than some because because she was born biologically male. she's one of a growing of transgender children in the bay area. >> when did you first realize that maybe scarlett was having some gender issues? >> i think when she was 18 months. we would send her you have at preschool dressed as a boy and she came home dressed like a

girl and it happened for about three months and we thought maybe she was getting muddy or painting with paints and that's all they had was extra girls clothes. >> so began her struggle with gender identity. >> that christmas it was really sad because all he got was legos and he's like, mom, what i really want is a dress. >> it wasn't long before this family realized that while ezra may be anatomically male, she was actually female inside. >> kindergarten she said mom, i'm really a girl. ever since scarlett has been living as a girl. >> about seven years, it's been a five-year process of really learning and we have therapists, we have people to help us. and it's not necessarily easy. there's been a lot of crying and growing as a family. >> one group that the family

reached out to as emeryville based gender spectrum. >> we basically do a lot of entrecote support to families and caregivers. we do a lot of education and training work with schools. >> a growing number of schools, including scarlett's are acknowledging that some kids aren't the same on the inside as they present on the outside. because children who are forced to conform in gender stereotypes are five times more likely to be depressed, four times likely to use drugs or commit suicide. >> gender is a unique thing to each person. and unfortunately our system has been put into rigid boxes of male or female that on an increasing level don't work for a lot of people. >> we don't know how many children shrug well gender. but the number of schools look for help is growing. while schools try to meet the needs of transgender children

many families are learning too. >> it's ongoing and it is not something that you can figure out a path and you can't change your mind. it's a conversation. >> in the future that conversation would include hormone therapy and possibly surgery. >> i think we are headed in that direction. >> how about if she changes her mind at some point? >> she can if she wants. it doesn't really make sense. with the child you love who is different than she is. >> ama daetz reporting. this summer sandra collins is launching the first summer camp in thegation to provide scarlett and other children like her to explore their gender identity and expression. we posted a link on our website, abc7news.com. bruce jenner's decision to live as a woman wasn't the only thing we learn from the interview last night with diane

sawyer. genre little came out at republican. that's getting a lot of reaction on social media. following last night's interview, the organization issued this statement that reads in part. of log cabin republicans congratulate bruce generaller and the tremendous curage he demonstrated tonight. being true to himself both in terms of his personal identity as well as his political identity. the shooting of a man in san francisco brought out dozens of protesters last night. abc7 news was in the mission district as they demonstrated. he man was shot to death after he pulled a knife in a dispute over a bike. police reported he wouldn't drop his knife, but the family disputes that sag an independent autopsy shows he was shot in the

performing press compressions as shown in this video. he's a voluntary fireman and has cpr training. he was helped by three others in the terminal. >> the woman comforted the man's wife was an angel. she was tremendous. and the two nurses that helped me perform cpr and do chest compressions get the a.e. d. in place did a great job. >> they have automatic defibrillators that restore the heartbeating. >> shocks are about to be delivered, step back and it will give you a warning. one, two three, shock and you can see the person jolt. >> paramedics took over and transport the the patient to o'connor hospital where he's recovering. the man doesn't want to be identified. he spoke to him by phone. >> passenger said they would do the same.
