ha >> time now is 6:00. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. it's saturday april 25th. it's been a rainy morning throughout the area. this is our view from the san mateo bridge. you see some raindrops on the camera there. traffic moving freely in both directions. overnight, this is what it look like in downtown san francisco. slick streets in the financial district. let's start off with our meteorologist lisa argen with a first look at live doppler 7hd. >> good morning, chris. you see around 680 and 880 from

milpitas north of san jose. still a few showers mainly in the higher elevations. things wrapping up quickly. 101 around morgan hill look at more wet weather. north of gilroy and further south along the coast we've got rain as it pushes quickly through big sur this morning. and winter weather advisory in effect with rain around the canyon and snow around tahoe city and a couple of inches here. we are looking at a wet pavement here. but overall a partly cloudy afternoon with breezy conditions on the coast and lingering spotty showers in the morning otherwise upper 50s coastside and about 06 in san francisco. mid-60s oakland and about 66 in san jose. a cool day today. dryer and warmer weather on tap for tomorrow. and what about the rest of the work week? or the beginning, i should say? we will talk about it coming up. chris. >> thank you.

here's a look at rain pelting the north bay in the petaluma area. water creating deep puddles in some spots. it may also be to blame for some accidents. take a look at this one on dillon beach road. here a car sheared a utility pole and brought down some cable lines around 10:00 p.m. then there's this accident on highway 101 year railroad road in novato. that was around 12:30 this morning. and the east bay overnight the rain fell pretty hard around highway 24 and miranda, and also along main street in walnut creek. [chainsaw noise] big traffic problems along highway 12 in sonoma county. a huge tree fell across all lanes of traffic near glen ellen. a driver didn't see the tree and ran right into it. they weren't hurt. high winds and soggy ground

they said listening to jenner's story is like reliving her own life. >> my transition in the 40s, whether it's the 40s for 60s, the question about why now is why not? the real question is why didn't i have to nerve to do it 20 years earlier? >> this woman who works with transgender youth said she's inspired by jenner. >> more than anything i didn't want to tell people i'm transgender because i thought if i can get this part i can just live. but that's not helping others. it's notice looking up to the older people. it makes me proud to be out. >> they are married and transgender and parents after -- of a two-year-old. >> it's a complex human picture of one way to be transgender. i'm glad they didn't present it as the only way to be transgender and i'm glad they addressed the fact that bruce jenner has a lot of money that other people don't. >> for him it's really about what is on the inside and not what is on the outside. and as i think it is with most people, but most people in the media keeps it on the outside. >> they say people who haven't

earthquake struck the country overnight. quake's epicenter was less than 350 miles from the capital city. at least 8 aftershocks of 4.5 or greater have been felt following the initial tumbler. government officials say at least 688 people have been killed and hundreds more injured. a man traveling in the country describes the moment the quake hits. >> so i was upstairs in a coffee shop. i was about to put my order in. and it kind of felt like some big trucks were rumbling buy and i wasn't sure about how the building was built so i wasn't too alarmed. maybe it was trucks. then is kept going and got stronger and stronger. >> he tells abc7 news he was supposed to return home tomorrow but he's now unsure how he will leave the country. local media said some historic

temples have collapsed along with dozens of other buildings in the region. people are believed to be trapped under the rubble. >> starbucks computer glitch that closed stores nationwide has been fixed this morning. they say it will be business at usual today. but some customers were turned away were treated to free drinks during yesterday's meltdown. >> this is a one cup mocha. >> they are serious about their coffee, and it got pretty serious after a crippling computer glitch at every company-operated starbucks in us and canada. >> i get upset because i need coffee every day. >> starbucks said it was not a hack. the outage was caused by a computer failure during a daily system refresh which meant stores couldn't take credit or debit cards. many closed early. >> a lot of frustrated people trying to get coffee.

especially those who don't have cash with them. >> but some customers without cash said they got free coffee at starbucks in this store in san francisco. >> is it messing up your routine? >> yeah, a little bits. actually a lot. >> what does that say to you? >> that we are highly reliant on our communication system. >> the only bright spot, the free wi-fi still worked. alan wang, abc7 news. >> the golden state warriors are hot and steph curry is on fire ahead of today's game for the first round nba playoff series. if you didn't see the end of the warriors playoff game thursday night you missed a classic comeback. steph curry scored 40 points and was the force in a 20 point rally as they beat new orleans in overtime to take 39-0 series late. his father spoke with abc7's own mike shumann about his worth ethic. >> to figure out how to get a shot off and kind of compete

>> breaking news out of walnut creek. crews are cleaning up after a car slams into a business. take a look at this video. a bmw. and a female driver was trapped in the vehicle. crews had to use cars to cut the door open. no word on the driver's condition or what led up to the accident. 6:1r5 is our time. a bartender who also works as a model is suing bart and oakland police, charging that their officers used excessive force while she was being booked at the santa rita jail. she ended up with severe facial injury. abc7 news obtained surveillance video of what happened. >> this is what megan sheehan looked like march 18th last year, date after st. patrick's day. she broke four bones in her face and knocked out several teeth. the police report said sheehan was violently punching and the officer guided her to the ground. her lawyer disputes that.

>> sheehan ended up at the lake mary bart station after a heavy night of drinking. she's embarrassed how drunk she got, but her crime, she says does not fit the punishment. >> i never should have got that drunk, but also there are ways to detain someone and not break their face. >> bart and oakland police say they cannot comment because the case is in litigation. happening now a major detour is in effect. if you are planning to take bart to the oakland a's game sunday might have to plan differently. bart is shutting down tracks between the coliseum and fruitvale stations starting tonight at 7:00 and all day sunday for some much-needed repair work. this is the first of three consecutive weekend closers. bart will provide buses, but 60-minute delays are possible. muni will rollout big service

improvements today, the most in decades. they are increasing service on some of the system's busiest lines, including the 38 geary 14 mission. and another. the agency plans to add limited stop service during the weekend. they are also revealing a new map and line numbers for some lines. we have more information on our website abc7news.com. some people are sporting some fancy new apple watches right now. the apple watch officially went on sale in some parts of the u.s. yesterday. we put the new technology through some rigorous testing. here's abc7 news anchor dan ashley are more. [applause] >> apple announced the release in march. now deliveries has begun and consumer reports has the watches in their test labs. the apple watch comes in a variety of styles. the sport is made of light weight aluminum with hardened glass. the stainless steel version has a sapphire crystal.

they face the same consumer reports test that all watches or smart watches face. >> you can protect a phone with a case but a smart watch is on your wrist where it is going to get banged up. >> this test shows how hard a scratch it can occur. most of scratched by the equivalent of a steal nail. the apple sport proved tougher and the other watch is even better with the scratch resistance of a luxury watch. >> if you spend a lot of money on the watch, want to know it can handle abuse. >> both versions were dunked in a pressurized tank for 30 minutes to check apple's water resistance claim. they survived the initial test but they won't officially pass until testers make sure they work 24 hours later. one of apple's key function is a fitness device. this test is assessing its accuracy in measuring your heart rate while you are moving. and still others are testing the

>> half past the hour on this saturday morning. thanks so much for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. the skies are trying to clear up across the bay area but it's a little windy outside. here's lisa argen with a quick look at the forecast. hi lisa >> hi, chris, you are absolutely right. the rain has exited. we are look at a quarter to three quarter inch since you were sleeping. still lingers in the south bay but it isn't much at all. even toward gilroy a few light areas of sprinkles. around hollister the rain is ending. but the main rain around big sur. and we still have a winter weather advisory. you mentioned the wind. 17 to 22 miles per hour. looking at a high of only 57 and breezy condition test coast. 60 in the city. look for low to mid-60s east bay. mid-60s in the south pay. all with partly cloudy skies. so the rain has ended and we are looking at a warmer second half

of the weekend. that is coming up in a few minutes. chris. >> lisa, thank you. last night former olympic champion bruce jenner revealed that he is transgender. jenner told abc's diane lawyer that his struggle with gender identity began at an early age. not everyone is waiting until they grow up. this morning we introduced you to an east bay family facing a similar struggle with their youngest child. it's a story you will see only on 7. here is abc news anchor ama daetz. scarlet is like most 7-year-old girls, less than thrilled to be doing homework after dinner. but she's different than some because because she was born ezra biologically male. she's one of a growing of transgender children in the bay area. >> when did you first realize that maybe scarlett was having some gender issues? >> i think when she was 18 months.

we would send her off to preschool dressed as a boy and she came home dressed like a girl and it happened for about three months and we thought maybe she was getting muddy or painting with paints and that's all they had was extra girls clothes. >> so began her struggle with gender identity. >> that christmas ezra was really sad because all he got was legos and he's like, mom what i really want is a dress. >> it wasn't long before this family realized that while ezra may be anatomically male, she was actually female inside. >> kindergarten she said, mom, i'm really a girl. ever since scarlett has been living as a girl. >> between two years and now seven years it's been a five-year process of really learning, and we have therapists, we have people to help us. and it's not necessarily easy. there's been a lot of crying and growing as a family.

>> one group that the family reached out to was emeryville based gender spectrum. >> we basically do a lot of direct support to families and caregivers. we do a lot of education and training work with schools. >> a growing number of schools including scarlett's, are acknowledging that some kids aren't the same on the inside as they present on the outside. that's because research shows that children who are forced to conform in gender stereotypes are five times more likely to be depressed, four times likely to use drugs or commit suicide, and twice as likely to contract h. i. v. >> gender is a unique thing to each person. and unfortunately our system has been put into rigid boxes of male or female that on an increasing level don't work for a lot of people. >> we don't know how many children struggle with their gender. but some say the number of schools looking for help is

growing. while schools try to meet the needs of transgender children, many families are learning too. >> it's ongoing and it is not something that you can figure out a path and you can't change your mind. it's a conversation. >> in the future that conversation would include hormone therapy and possibly surgery. >> i think we are headed in that direction. >> how about if she changes her mind at some point? >> i think it doesn't really make sense. you wish that the child that you loch is different than she is. >> that was ama daetz reporting. this summer sandra collins is launching the first summer camp in the nation to provide scarlet and other kids like her with a save space to explore their gender identity and gender expression. for more information we posted a link on our website abc7news.com

bruce jenner's decision to live as a woman wasn't the only thing we learn from the interview last night with diane sawyer. jenner little came out at republican. that's getting a lot of reaction on social media. it garnered support from the log cabin republicans which represent lgbt individuals. they issued this statement that reads in part: log cabin republicans congratulate bruce jenner and the tremendous courage he demonstrated tonight. being true to himself both in terms of his personal identity as well as his political identity. the shooting of a man in san francisco brought out dozens of protesters last night. abc7 news was in the mission district as they demonstrated. this man, mr. lopez, was shot to death on march 26th after he pulled a knife in a dispute over a bike. police reported he wouldn't drop his knife, but the family disputes that sag an independent autopsy shows he was shot in the back.

a group of bay area researchers is using a unique technology to search for life beyond earth.

it's an effort known as seti the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. and they are reaching out. >> do you have the feelings we aren't alone? step into dan's office and you may start to believe it. he directs the seti research officer in berkeley with the job of scanning the heavens looking for extraterrestrial life. >> if they are out there, they may transmit messages our way. for decades they have eaves dropped on space, listening mainly for radio waves, but now they are moving into the digital age. >> recently we started looking for laser signals and infrared laser signals. it is a color that you and i can't see, but it's very good for communication between the stars >> to understand why infrared light makes a good long distance communication system, think of it here on earth. these cables carry anything from landline telephones to the internet. forget the cables and imagine aliens sending messages using lasers and shooting out infrared light. since the beams would be

invisible to the naked eye they built their own infrared detector. they installed it east of san jose at the observatory. >> we mounted it on the back of the telescope. we just tried it out and it's working beautifully. >> it's designed to spot bursts of laser light that may last just parts of a second. it covers thousands of stars. >> it would be bizarre if we are alone. i would think it could be teaming in life. >> if one. those life forms was inclined to make a long distance call to earth, worthheimer and his team decided laser light would be the quickest way to do it. eric thomas. abc7 news. >> you may remember last year the observatory was in danger of losing its funding, but since then donors, including google, have stepped forward to help keep it open.

>> new this morning, president obama is explaining how new high standards trade agreements are important for the economy. in his weekly address the president said the new trade deals are vital to middle class economics, with the idea that the u.s. is best when everybody gets their fair shot and plays by the same set of rules. >> if america doesn't shape the rules of the global economy today to benefit our workers when our economy is in the position of new global strength, then china will write those rules. i've seen towns where manufacturing collapsed, plants closed down and jobs dried up and i refuse to accept that for our workers. because i know when the playing field is level, nobody can beat us. >> the president said any deal he signs would be the most progressive trade agreement in history with strong provision for workers and the environment.

one is being held a hero for saving the life of an airline passenger having a heart attack. abc7 news reporter david louie said this is actually the fourth time this good samaritan has responded to a heart attack victim. >> a 76-year-old man was having a heart attack at one of the gates. his wife was screaming. what would you do? if you are there and you witness it, you never forget it. if you are there and you witness it and you jump in as a courageous bystander, you know you do your part. >> los altos business owner, mike, stepped in and did cpr performing chest compressions as shown in this video. this video is from the american heart association. he's a voluntary fireman and has cpr training. he was helped by three others in the terminal. >> the woman that comforted the man's wife was an angel. she was tremendous. and the two nurses that helped me perform cpr and do chest compressions, get the a.e.d. in

place, they did a great job. >> they have automatic defibrillators that restore the heartbeating. it took three times to restore the heartbeating. >> it will audibly tell you that shocks are about to be delivered, step back and it will give you a warning. one, two, three, shock, and you can see the person jolt. >> paramedics took over and transported the patient to o'connor hospital where he's recovering. the man doesn't want to be identified. he spoke to him by phone. he thanked him for saving his life. >> passengers said they would do the same. >> i think i know enough to actually keep him going until a real person came along. >> this incident has convinced his family to learn cpr. in san jose, abc7 news. >> 6:47 is our time. some rain overnight but the roads are beginning to dry off. >> yeah, the rain has ended with some breezy winds.
