history crumbles in nepal during a dead lay quake. tonight the rescue mission and growing concern for surviveor. i'm katie marzullo. we begin with developing news on the earthquake. nearly 1400 people are confirmed dead. a dozen aftershocks rippled through the region for hours. the u.s. will send a million dollars in aid and disaster teams to the quake zone and a quarter response includes california-based urban search and rescue team from the los angeles area. here's a look at the aftermath.

>> reporter: seconds of terror followed by scenes of definition. >> the whole room was shaking. >> a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit nepal on saturday. at the earth shook the capitol city of kathmandu crumbled. >> we had debris falling from roofs and a giant water tank that shattered. >> reporter: homes came down the bricks scattered everywhere. roads buckled and tore apart. religious temples temples and historic monuments left in piece. >> part of the rubble and people are trying to find if there's inunderanything. >> rescue operations began immediately. people digging through the rubble by hand. by afternoon, troops arrived carrying pick axes and shovels, but it is too little and too late for thousands of victims. local hospitals are overwhelmed. survivors forced to camp outside,s a dozen of aftershocks

keep rocking the region. >> big avalanche is coming down. >> the quake's violent tremendousors triggered ravages in the nearby mountains, base camp at mt. everest quiet and solemn. the local shep goo guides restaurant many deaths on the mountain. as night fell, concerns about supplies too. the impoverish yesterday country's infrastructure is falling apart. food and clean water are at risk. but the u.s. state department is asking all u.s. citizens to contact the embassy in kathmandu if they require assistance. abc news. london. >> one of the earthquake survive iowa fremont resident john couldn't koo who was visiting nepal. he describes the moment the quake hit. >> felt like some big trucks were rumbling by, and i wasn't sure how the building was built, so no one seemed to be too alarmed.

hundreds of people marched on the streets of baltimore today in the name of freddie gray. gray died this month from a spinal injury while in police custody. authorities admit mistakes were made during and after gray's arrest. new video releasees gives another look at the moments before and during gray's arrest. the video comes from city surveillance cameras. police say it will help as they

sale at stores nationwide has been fixed. it is business as usual today. some customers were either turned away or got their drinks for free yesterday during the meltdown. starbucks says the outage was caused by a computer failure during a daily system refresh, which meant stores could not take credit or debit cards and many closed early. >> wet windy weather overnight caused some problems across the bay area. the huge tree fell across all lanes of highway 12 just north of glen allen in smoke ma county, and driver slammed into it. no one was hurt. fire crews believe soggy ground and high winds brought down the tree. enjoyed that little built of rain we got here in san francisco last night. let's go over to drew. >> the cold front brought the showers this morning. now live doppler 7hd showing dryer skies are prevailing. the rain has moved out but as the cold front exits, it's kicking up winds.
