>> devastating earthquake hits nepal causing an avalanche on mt. everest. nearly 2,000 people are dead. tonight, aftershocks forced hundreds of thousands of people to sleep outside. good evening, everyone. the death toll in the region now stands at 1910. 5,000 more people are injured. in the 7.8 earthquake that caused widespread destruction. the worst quake in the region in more than 80 years. 17 people were killed in an avalanche triggered by the kwaik earthquake on mt. everest, including man from the bay area.

we have the details. >> reporter: that man 33-year-old dan fredinburg was a google employee who led anned a vench rouse life. his sister took to his instagram feed today to confirm his death. dan fredinburg was on an expedition of mt. everest. the group he was traveling with jagged globe confirmed his death from an avalanche caused by the earthquake. he was there promoting his nonprofit called "save the ice." >> i have done a lot of good things in my life. >> reporter: he had a start up in the mission district called the laundry. we talked to people in that neighborhood. his death is a shock. according to google three other company employees traveling with him are safe and google is making arrangements to get them home. in the bay area families are turning to social media platforms to check on loved

ones. >> checklists. >> reporter: his home office has become an information center for the 4,000 or so nepal ease families in the east bay. he's been using facebook's recently launched safety checklist tool to track people in the quake zone. since land lines are down and power is scarce, mobile phones are the best way to communicate. >> we are using apps that you can talk. >> he has been able to see his family's pictures of the destruction and tents set up outside of their homes. like much of the rest of kathmandu residents they are afraid the aftershocks will collapse what is left of the homes. he says the nepal community in the bay area doesn't have a central temple. he's trying to coordinate an event for people to come together and as the recovery efforts continue in nepal google pledged $1 million for the

cause. in the newsroom, abc 7 news. >> thank you. also two men from sonoma county dodged death in nepal. john ryder survived an avalanche in april of last year. this year he was on everest again when the earthquake triggered the avalanche. santa rosa residents got him on a different expedition. he spoke to us a short time ago. >> in california there are two kinds of earthquakes i can remember. jolts that wake you up in the middle of the night but then they are gone and one that keeps going and going. this was that low ma prieta feel. >> he says he is safe. another survivor is fremont resident jonathon coup who was visiting nepal. >> it felt like big trucks were rumbling by. no one seemed to be alarmed. maybe it was trucks rumbling by and it kept going and got

stronger and stronger. people started to scream a little bit. a lot of people ran outen. a waiter and i hid under a table. >> he was not injured. he tells abc 7 news he hopes to return home tomorrow. we know from twitter he's at the airport. he says it is kind of a mess right now. the united states is sending a disaster response team and $1 million in aid to the himalayan nation. the emergency response includes a california-based urban search and rescue team from the los angeles area. coming up at 11:3 o reaction from the nepalese community in the bay area and how they plan to help. san francisco police are looking for a driver who hit a motorcycle driver and sped away. the crash on howard street in the south of market neighborhood send the motorcycle driver to the hospital with serious injuries. police are looking for a white toyota corolla missing part of the front bumper. fire started just before 1:00 this horning.

it took hours to put it out because of the secluded location. investigators broke up what is called a hidden party just hours before the fire. as many as 300 teenagers were. there investigators do suspect arson. they and neighbors want to know if the party and fire are connected. >> i do know people are starting to break in houses. and throw their own parties. >> no one was hurt in the fire. new at 11:00, police briefly shut down rail traffic in richmond after a man was spotted tossing a gun near the tracks. it happened at the richmond amtrak station around 6:00 tonight. abc 7 news was in richmond as police investigated. police did find something. it turned out to be an air soft gun. the highway patrol is searching for the driver of this suv suspected of tossing three guns from a car as he fled officers. it started when an officer tried to stop the mercedes for a traffic violation but the driver

sped away. officers captured a passenger but the driver did get away. turning to weather. rain overnight in the bay area. abc 7 news was there as the rain turned heavy. the storm brought much-needed snow to the sierra. some places as much as a foot. we have a first check on weather. >> this cold front is through early in the morning. we woke up to damp roadways and turned to sunshine but cooler temperatures. rainfall the past 24 hours the bulk of the area from a quarter to a half inch of rain. the most rain in santa cruz. 1.62 inches. in terms of snowfall, bridgeport an inch and a half. now the cold front has exited we are looking to a rapid warmup. we will look at the details coming up. thank you. from weather to the warriors. golden state swept the new orleans pelicans winning game

four of the first round series. we begin our team coverage tonight live from new orleans with reaction from the team. >> reporter: well, the best-case scenario in the playoffs is a sweep. that's what the warriors did, winning two straight in new orleans. of course they won't have to play again now until next weekend. green started off the fireworks. 20 of his 22 points in the first quarter. the warriors led by 13 at the half. seth curry took over. 39 points, eight boards, nine assists and the warriors win big 109-98 the final. the first time they have swept a team in a seven-game series since they won the nba championship. their only nba championship back in 1975. after the game, i caught up with seth curry. >> first player since davis that had back to back in the

good evening. in tonight's headlines, investigators want to hear from anyone with investigation on a fire that destroyed a vacant home hours after teenager partiers were kicked out. the fire started just before 1:00 this morning in the walnut creek hills. no one was hurt. arson is suspected. a motorcyclist in the hospital with serious injuries after a hit and run crash tonight. it happened 8:45 on howard street near 11:00. police are looking for a white toyota corolla missing part of a front bumper. amtrak and b.a.r.t. service back in order after a man tossed a

replica gun near the train tracks. they shut down service briefly to investigate. developing news now the nepalese home ministry says 2,000 people have been killed in the massive earthquake. hundreds of thousands of people are spending the night outside in chilly weather. they are terrorized by aftershocks. many have lost their homes. abc reporter bazi kanani has more. >> reporter: without warning the shock waves hit nepal. >> the ground shook quite hard for i would say about 30 seconds. >> reporter: a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake hitting the impoverrished himalayan country. >> i woke up feeling the shaking. >> reporter: scenes of devastation. houses disappearing in to pile s of rubble. monuments in pieces. everywhere people running for their lives. >> ran out to the street. you could hear screams.

>> reporter: shaken residents jolted by aftershocks. the terror returning again and again. >> every time, it is coming again, the panic would rise. >> reporter: the aftershocks forcing hundreds of thousands to sleep outside as a desperate race unfolds to pull survivors from the rubble. help coming too late for so many victims. not just in the city but also the mountains where the quake triggered massive avalanches. and burying mountaineers beneath them one a google executive, dan fredinburg. google saying in a statement, we lost one of our own in this tragedy. the heart break growing as more bodies are pulled from the rubble. bazi kanani, abc news new york. information is slowly getting to members of the bay area, nepalese community about loved ones.

mt. everest restaurant served dishes and one employee heard from her mother who was hurt in the earthquake. >> in my area, there's like 90% of houses damaged. i think 1 2 people have been killed already. >> a lack of support in the sense that they don't have -- you know the proper equipment or even simple bedding or sleeping bag to sleep outside. >> reporter: local nepales e-business owners are raising money for quake victims. calm has returned to much of baltimore after a day of unrest as protesters expressed anger toward police over the death of a black nan custody. people vandalized cars as police swept through the streets and vandals set fire to cars and garbage bins. they are angry over the death of freddy gray who suffered a fatal spinal injury after arrested.

over more of the southern half of south america. thousands of people took to the streets in washington, d.c. to rally against same-sex marriage. speakers at the march for marriage were encouraging states to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. today's rally is ahead of tuesday's same-sex marriage case arguments before the u.s. supreme court. a ward inside the hospital where the royal baby will be born is closed tonight because of a super bug. kate middleton still plans to give birth at the hospital. the stomach bug infected eight patients in a separate area of the building. all of them have recovered. kate and prince william's second child could be born any day now. an inmate has died in jail. the woman collapsed while receiving medical treatment at the west county detention facility in richmond. staff performed cpr on her. paramedics later pronounced her

dead. san francisco's russian consul general is honoring bay area veterans for an historic meeting that took place 70 years ago today. private first class john tunger who played a key role in ending world war ii. the consulate presented the 90-year-old with a medal for the first meeting between u.s. and soviet troops n. 1945 he helped to clear a road in a german city where the historic summit took place. >> just a joy in my life in any twilight years. and i can't say enough for what they did to me today and honored me today. just a little old private in the army. >> hardly. the consulate laid flowers at the world war ii memorial to the missing in honor of those who fought in the war. going green by giving up

hundreds if not thousands of dollars of tax penalties if they don't get health coverage by the end of the month. that's ten days away now. michael finney explains how to avoid the penalty. she is like many people in their 20s, she lives on a starting salary and hasn't had health insurance since she graduated from san francisco state. >> i think one of the reasons most people don't buy health insurance is because they don't see it as a major priority. >> reporter: it only game became a priority after she got sick and had to see a specialist. the deadline to get health insurance was two months ago. california extended it until april 30th for people like olga. >> people wanted to take chances. when they were faced with the penalty, that's when they realized this is not a game. >> reporter: diana is a certified insurance agent with cover california. diana met with olga to discuss

her options. olga is in the united states on a work visa from russia. and just learned about the mandatory health insurance requirement. >> i don't like it but the option that they offer and more affordable plan compared to others. yeah, that part i like. >> reporter: the penalty is 1% of your after-tax income or $95 per adult, whichever is higher. for someone who earns $40,000 before taxes the penalty would be $299. that nearly doubles to $497 in the 2015 tax year. olga learned her penalty would be about $300. >> relieved that the deadline, application deadline was extended. >> reporter: it is estimated about 1 million people eligible for cover california have not yet enrolled in any insurance plan. the state wants to give them every opportunity to do so. >> we know, for example, 90% of
