at 4:00, we'll be at the 50s. a pretty delightful evening before the sun sets at 7:52. >> thanks mike. we're looking at 680 there. what about elsewhere. >> the rest of the traffic light. no accidents to report. also want to talk about b.a.r.t. we did have suspended service between fruitvale and the coliseum stations on saturday and sunday. and it looks like trains are now running through. we've got 36 of them that are in service now. as we look at the mcargumentthur that is clear to the toll plaza. no cars collecting in the cash paying lanes yet. just a nice trickle into san francisco. >> all right. thank you. 5:01. more on the breaking news we brought in the last half hour. an ongoing police investigation in san francisco's knob hill neighborhood. reporter janeto has arrived on the scene. >> reporter: police have been out here for two hours

investigating this death at this complex. the medical examiner vehicle has arrived here and there is a stretcher oppose the sidewalk. the apartment complex continues to be blocked off by the yellow caution tape. and to give a sense of where we are, we're right across the street from the ritz-carlton hotel in san francisco's knob hill neighborhood. of course, people telling us this morning that it's very unusual to see police out here. now, initial unconfirmed reports came in from someone who said he spotted a woman on the staircase. police will continue to be out here for several hours. they say we are waiting on a sergeant to get more information. and we'll have more updates for you later on in the show. reporting live for now, in san francisco, janet oh, abc 7 news. in nepal, the death toll has gallon grown higher following the earthquake. more than 3,600 people declared dead. tens of thousands are sleeping outdoors due to constant-ac aftershocks and fear of more collapses. the kathmandu airport is filled

with nepalis and international visitors desperate to get out. some planes are unable to land, because of congestion. one new yorker tells abc news it's a complete mad house. alyssa harrington is live in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: the devastation hits close to home for many here in the bay area. here is video of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake captured on footage and posted on facebook. thousands of people are dead or left homeless. among the victims google executive daniel fredinburg, had a privacy for google x. the 33-year-old was caught in an avalanche on mt. everest triggered by the quake. his sister wrote on his instagram page he suffered a major head injury. fredinburg lived in san francisco and was climbing everest for the third time. his friends and his girlfriend described him as an adventurer and activist. >> you might say it is the one

thing i will take away from knowing him. happiness is important. and that's what he strived for. >> i've never met someone with more stamina more endurance, more strength, more intellect. a climber on mt. everest shot this video of one of the avalanches hitting base camp. meanwhile, many of those in the bay area nepalis community want to help family members. they held a vigil at the ferry building in san francisco yesterday. although most of the damage we have seen is in kathmandu, they say the rural and mountain regions are desperate for help too. many are using social media to connect with loved ones, using the hash tag missing in nepal. alyssa harrington, abc 7 news. >> thanks alyssa. 5:04. a rescue team from china pulled a quake survivor out from under a collapsed building late yesterday. the man had been buried under the rubble of a five-story building that came down during the shaking.

the task was made more difficult because of repeated aftershocks hitting the area. the chinese government has offered more than $3 million in humanitarian aid to nepal. a sacramento area structural engineer will be on his way to nepal today to help with relief efforts. kit me moto runs a nonprofit that responds to quake ravaged areas. he brings expertise and technology to red tag and keep people out of vulnerable buildings so if aftershocks should happen, there will be fewer casualties. collapsed buildings, he says do the most harm during earthquakes. >> it's so easy to fix. this knowledge and this expertise and this technology we can share. >> me owe moto says he plans to work with nepal's government and the private sector to improve infrastructure. help is pouring into nepal from around the world. the u.s. is sending money and 70-member team.

polled poland, germany and israel are also on the way. japan members will remain in nepal for a week. if you would like to help the victims, we have a list of organizations accepting donations. just go to our website abc 7 news.com. the information is on our home page. other news now at 5:06. happening this morning, an 18-year-old man is in police custody in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 9-year-old boy in discovery bay. abc 7 news reporter amy hollowfield is live with the latest details. amy? >> reporter: hi, eric. today the victim's classmates will face reality of not seeing him here at school, and someone has already expressed their sorrow here at timber elementary school leaving flowers and balloons here at the front door. this isn't the only spot where people are remembering the boy. look at the memorial in front of his discovery bay home. mourners have left flowers, candles and teddy darcy bears for the 9-year-old boy stabbed to death inside his home yesterday morning.

a manhunt was then launched for his killer. six hours later, police made an arrest. they took 18-year-old william schultz into custody. neighbors tell us they believe schultz may suffer from mental illness. investigators tell us this was not a random attack by a stranger. but that the 18-year-old actually spent the night at the victim's home. >> we believe that the suspect and the victim knew each other. obviously, it's a 9-year-old boy and 1-year-old man. we believe the suspect is friends with one of the siblings of the house. >> investigators made the arrest where schultz was being treated in the e.r. a nurse recognized him and called police. they have not said why he was in the hospital. the family of the boy is obviously devastated and a friend says at this time the family does not want to comment. reporting live in discovery bay, amy hollyfield abc 7 news. the port of san francisco has served eviction papers to one of its long-time tena

an eater re was given the notice. they were in a dispute over the property. the port wants them gone so they can redevelop the pier. sinbad's owner says it has the legal right to stay and accuses port officials of acting in bad faith. 5:08 now. time for a check on weather and traffic. we begin with the weather and meteorologist mike nicco. >> we start with our inland east bay temperatures, all over the scale themselves. blackhawks, san ramon, upper 40s. pleasant hill 50. lafayette, 56. and check out the highway, pittsburgh ant okay and brentwood. let's check out the rest of the neighborhood. low to mid 50s along the bay shore all the way down to cupertino, 51. foster city 50. 46 in half moon bay the cool spot. as we head into the afternoon hours, this monday is the

covering it's 5:13. good monday morning. a live look. both sides of the bay pretty picture, crystal clear. we'll talk with mike nicco about the brief warmup and what comes after that. >> happening today petaluma officials discussing ways to reduce water use because of the drought. city leaders will try to decide which cultivation measures can be improved from reducing water

use to recycling water. one possible conservation measure leaders will not be discussing is a temporary building moratorium. petaluma was the first sonoma county city to publicly discuss the moratorium on development. but the city council backed off on the idea. the city needs affordable housing and rental units but doesn't want to overtap water resources resources. a b.a.r.t. board director wants you to know who to call to give your two cents about the transit system. according to the chronicle, they want to put up display photos of all nine board officials in train cars along with the district's they represent. the posters would also go up in b.a.r.t. stations. he says he wants passengers to know who their b.a.r.t. director is. the chronicle reports colleagues are less enthusiastic about the idea. it would cost the district about $13,000. golden gate bridge officials want to help with a drone problem. they want help they say the unmanned air crafts are flying past security fences and sensors where no photography is allowed.

one recently crash-landed on the bridge. the golden gate transportation district is asking senator dianne feinstein and the faa for regulations that would cite drone operators for trespassing in off-limits areas. gas prices are on the rise with no signs of slowing. >> here is this morning's america's money report. >> gas prices on wait up. >> average for a gallon of regular right now is $2.53. that's 8 cents higher than last week and 11 cents more than a month ago. >> analysts expect a rise to continue for a while longer due to climbing oil prices. it. of 63 at half moon bay. san francisco, about 70. and then oakland at 76. walnut creek at 86. and then antioch at 89 degrees. let's look at your temperatures. in the low to mid 80s across the south bay. san jose at 82. santa cruz, not quite as warm but not bad. 77. in the mid to upper 70s for most of the south bay. as you head south into mountain view, we'll hit 80. low to mid 60s along the coast. clouds gathering there if they're not already there. near 70 downtown and san francisco. near sausalito. much cooler around bodega bay. 57 to 69. pittsburgh and antioch, a 32-degrees summer spread today. 79 in petaluma. everybody else in the 80s. mid to upper 70s as we head through our east bay shoreline.

77 at castro valley. and you come across the dublin gradient, the mid to upper 80s but well coup weather this morning, probably not going to need the air conditioner this afternoon. but less comfortable than yesterday afternoon. you see the clouds along the coast, some spill into the bay. and some fog possible across the north bay. low to mid 50s. here's the high pressure dominating today. it will get shoved out of the way by a cold front that will bring an onshore breeze tomorrow and the actual cooler weather wednesday. we drop about 5 to 10 degrees compared to today. but then thursday and friday are going to be a lot like today before temperatures settle back to average levels saturday and sunday. have a good one. >> mike, here's 101 in san jose right near the san jose airport and 880. the drive is smooth and clear. and pretty much got green conditions everywhere across the bay area. we do have a couple construction projects. this one is going to be the lower deck of the bay bridge. so the eastern span between san francisco and oakland, that's

discovery bay home of a 9-year-old boy who was stabbed to death. sheriff's deputies say the suspect, 18-year-old william schultz is friends with one of the siblings. neighbors say schultz was being treated for mental health issues. number four dramatic images coming out of texas. some major flooding following storms in the northern part of the state overnight. floodwaters have inundated this rural region in johnson county. this is a live picture there. you can see the water. this is outside of ft. worth texas. tornadoes, baseball-sized hail and intense rain all reported during the weekend. number five, this morning students will encounter closed signs after corinthian colleges announced it's education classes. >> number six check out the roller coaster of temperatures this week.

"jeopardy" went home with the best game show award and host of "the chew" won for best informative talk show. >> you can watch kelly and michael weekdays at 9:00 a.m.

"the chew" airs at noon and "general hospital" at 2:00 p.m. all right here on abc 7. what a great lineup. now to the big controversy. ooh. >> more than 12000 fans of abc's "grey's anatomy" have signed a petition demanding that mcdreamy return to the show. >> dr. derek shepard was killed off thursday blindsided by a big rig. dempsey was one of the show's original characters. the author of the petition says his abrupt departure has destroyed die-hard fans adding we do not deserve this. you can see how other doctors mourn his loss thursday at 8:00 right here on abc 7. but the fans, boy they cannot take this. so we'll see what happens if there might be a return. >> kind of hard to bring a character back. has been done before -- >> a dream. >> that is "dallas" from way back in the day. we're coming back with a full another 90 minutes of news.

bay. by 4:00 60 at the coast, so breezes cool you down. mid 70s around the day, mid 80s inland and enjoy a comfortable evening, chilly around the bay and mid 60s and even more so at the coast mid 50s. >> thank you. hopefully a smooth start to the week. >> it really is uneventful and impressive look at 101 here in the north bay. that is the drive from san rafael and tail lights moving the southbound. northbound, not a single hiccup anywhere. the golden gate bridge, nice, an extra lane in the southbound directions. this zipper truck made its way from the toll plaza into marin. northbound traffic out of the city and into the north bay. also nice and light. thank you. breaking news now from san francisco's knob hill neighborhood. police have been on-scene all morning for a death investigation. abc 7 news reporter janet o is live with details. >> reporter: people are slowly waking up this morning to an

unusual police presence across from the ritz-carlton hotel. you can see the apartment complex across the street is cordoned off by the yellow caution tape. a medical examiner has been out here for hours. the medical examiner, along with police officers, are investigating what appears to be a death here at this apartment complex. a witness first reported seeing a woman on the staircase. how and why she ended there we don't know. we are waiting to get confirmation and more information from police officers at this hour. but for now, the apartment continues to be blocked off. reporting live in san francisco janet o, abc 7 news. >> janet thank you very much. 5:31 now. the death toll continues to rise this morning in nepal, following saturday's powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake. more than 3,600 people declared dead. rescue workers are still struggling to reach vulnerable mountain villages two days after the disaster.

thousands are sleeping outdoors, afraid of the constant aftershocks that have hit all weekend, and drivers are jamming the roads out of the capital. the airport is filled with nepali youths and international visitors, desperate to get out. for more now, we turn to abc news reporter susan saulny live in washington, d.c. susan? >> reporter: good morning, eric. rescue teams are pouring into nepal from all over the world racing against the clock to keep that death toll from rising even higher. tens of thousands across nepal are shell-shocked and sleeping in the streets or makeshift tents this morning as the death toll surges past 3,000 from the earthquake that ripped across the himalayan nation on saturday. kathmandu, nepal's capital, now virtually impassable. rescuers and aide workers are responding from as far away as virginia. >> bringing surge capability the people en tombed in rubble extricated and handed over to

qualified medical care. >> reporter: on sunday an aftershock bigger than most earthquakes caused more buildings to collapse and more panic. >> reporter: everyone is running through the streets! >> reporter: authorities warn, the worst damage and higher casualties might be in the vulnerable mountain villages rescue workers are still struggling to reach. beyond kathmandu, many of nepal's ancient temples are in ruins. and on mt. everest marooned climbers struggle to stay alive. this illinois woman's son is among them. >> the structure of the mountain has changed. so the path is laid out, but that path is probably different now. >> reporter: the quake dislodged tons of snow. >> the ground is shaking. >> reporter: one of the climbers on mt. everest posted this video of the moment when the earthquake hit. at least 18 people were killed including 3 americans. google executive, dan fredinburg film maker tom

kaplan and dr. melissa eaves gearlong. a military plane is on the way with tons of supplies and search and rescue teams. susan saulny, abc 7 news. thank you. it's 5:34. an earthquake structural engineer from sacramento is flying to nepal. kit miyamoto has responded to earthquakes in haiti japan and new zealand, bringing his expertise and technology to improve the buildings so when another earthquake hits more people can survive. miyamoto says he will work with the government and private sector to help nepal improve its infrastructure. as susan mentioned, 18 people including 3 americans were killed in an avalanche on mt. everest. dozens of people on the mountain are still missing and rescue crews are trying to pull survivors to safety. one climber caught in the moment of terror as the wall of snow descended on his group, getting off the mountain will take the survivors at least four days. and google executive daniel fredinburg is one of the

avalanche victims. these pictures are from his instagram feed. friends say he was an adventurer who lived his life to the fullest. an online fund-raiser is under way for two orphanages in nepal. a private vigil is being planned in san francisco. some members of the nepalis community held a vigil last night. they lit candles and chanted slogans for those in nepal. many are concerned about the disaster relief efforts. they hope to collect donations to send resources to the rural areas, and fast. one organizer says he plans to fly there next week to help deliver whatever is collected. if you would like to help the victims of the nepal earthquake, we have a list of organizations that are accepting donations. just go to our website abc 7 news.com. the information is on our home page. and we'll have continuing coverage of the nepal earthquake

on air and online at abc 7 news.com. you can get the latest developments any time on twitter at abc 7 news bay area. a santa rosa man has been arrested on suspicion of dui. authorities say he caused a head-on crash that injured a marin county sheriff's captain. the accident happened yesterday afternoon on highway 1 near valley ford in sonoma county. according to the santa rosa "press democrat" the driver, 21-year-old juan vonda, collided with a sedan going the opposite direction. off-duty sheriff's captain rick navarro was driving. crews had to use the jaws of life to get him out. he has serious injuries. families in discovery bay are leaving flowers and can dals outside the home of a 9-year-old boy who was stabbed to death. it happened at the boy's home on frost way. investigators say the suspect is friends with one of the victim's siblings. they say 18-year-old william schultz stole a truck and left the scene.

deputies arrested him at a hospital where a nurse recognized him from pictures on social media. neighbors tell 7 news the suspect was being treated for mental issues. we'll have a live report at the top of the hour. a napa high school soccer coach is under arrest accused of propositioning a student for sex. he was arrested at his home yesterday morning. he faces two counts including texting the 16-year-old girl and explicit photo. the girl contacted police after receiving the photo. police say vargas may have also inappropriately contacted other students. the supreme court will hear a case tomorrow that could decide the future of same-sex marriage. the justices face two key questions. can states ban same-sex marriage, and do states have to recognize gay marriages that were performed legally in other states. >> couples who have been together for years, and all they want is to express their love and commitment to each other in front of friends and family.

climates this morning. half moon bay is 5 degrees cooler. san carlos the same as livermore. everybody else about 1 to 8 degrees warmer than yesterday and that's the spring board as we head into the afternoon hours for warmer weather. not a bad ferry ride this morning. the bay should be relatively calm thanks to a light and variable wind. 79 in the north bay and 89 east bay. coast and san francisco, 57 to 70. and then 74 along the east bay shore to low 80s as you head into the east -- south bay. we're going to be 5 to 10 degrees cooler tuesday into wednesday and there's your next warming trend. i'll show if it lasts into the weekend coming up. >> okay mike. 44 b.a.r.t. trains running on time right now. and b.a.r.t. tracks now reopened between fruitvale and the coliseum stations. lots of track work there. so it appears that we've got trains running on time. trains 1 and 3 just one minute late, which isn't too bad. we're not experiencinging any delays in the south bay. metering lights have been turned on here at the bay bridge. in fact, take a look at all the headlights there as they come in

miles. there was a 500-gallon fuel spill and it took six hours to clean up. the driver of the truck was rescued. no word on his condition. san francisco city officials plan to take a close look at a major issue affecting residents and visitors. we're talking about parking or the lack of it. the municipal transportation agency is set to review the city's residential parking permit program in response to growing criticism over the expensive cost of parking permits andzx the lack of available spaces. the program is designed to give residents a way to park in neighborhoods long-term and cap the amount of time visitors are allowed to park. this morning ford is recalling nearly 400,000 cars to fix a problem with door latches. it covers 2012 to 2014 ford fiestas, fusions and lincoln mkz cards made in mexico. the car maker is concerned that faulty latches can allow doors to fly open. ford dealers are fixing the

latches for free. japan's prime minister is in the u.s. this morning on a week-long visit that will bring limb to the bay area. shinzo abe will speak at the school of government later today. tomorrow he'll become the first japanese leader to address a joint session of congress at the u.s. capitol. and later will visit san francisco. while in california abe is expected to meet with state high-speed rail officials to market japanese-built rail cars. japan is home to the world's first bullet train network. this morning, the warriors who seem to be as fast as a bullet train these days will begin practicing ahead of the western conference semi finals. >> like those mag love trains, right? yesterday golden state's first game will be sunday may 3 if the portland series ends in six games or less. if it goes seven games, the warriors play tuesday may 5th. on saturday, there was a four-game sweep of the pelicans. playoff tickets for the next round go on sale thursday

and 60 at the coast, near 70 around the bay and 80 inland this weekend. sorry, no rain. here's leyla. the san mateo bridge moving without a hij here between hayward and foster city. big gaps between the vehicles, running at top speeds. no accidents there, but all of a sudden things heated up in the bay area. we're taking you into hayward where there is a new accident involving three vehicles just about in the vicinity either just before highway 92 or farther to the south. so we do have lanes blocked, southbound side, 880 at wynton avenue where chp places the accident and causing pressure on 238. as we slide over to san francisco, northbound side of 101 at 280, another crash blocking one lane and now starting to see the slow downs as you approach the 280 extension, continuing toward currin slow and go commute. westbound side of highway 4, solo crash and another car went into a ditch f. you're traveling
