live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> more rescue attempts are underway in nepal and on mount everest after saturday's deadly earthquake. the death toll has climbed above 4,000. they include a bay area man on this mountain. you can see the difficult conditions. >> thanks for joining us. crews are using raw desperation to dig through debris looking for more trapped people two days after that disaster. the moments a child was found

buried in the rubble and very carefully rescued. it is a race against time and frantic search for survivors. that magnitude 7.8 quake hit on saturday leaving thousands dead and more than 7,000 injured. a drone flying over the city of kathmandu gives us a first look today at the destruction from above. the u.s. government announcing a short time ago it's sending an additional $9 million in aid on top of the $1 million already pledged. countries around the world are sending people and resources to the devastated region. families are camping in the streets of the capital city, fearing more damage from the aftershocks. >> [ bleep ]. morning to rescue as many as 150 climbers from the face of the world's highest mountain. >> and the devastation in nepal hits close to home for some in the bay area. among the thousands dead, a google executive from san francisco. abc 7's news reporter is here with more. >> reporter: well cheryl the state department announced four americans are among those killed. including two men from california. many more are trapped in nepal, desperate to get home. these are the three americans killed in the devastating earthquake in nepal. 33-year-old daniel fredinburg from san francisco. 61-year-old tom taplin from santa monica. and 28-year-old marisa girawong. she had been living and working there for more than a year. it triggered a series of avalanches on mount everest. among the dozen or so dead on the mountain daniel fredinburg a google executive who was head

of privacy for google "x." >> he run it as boldly as anyone will ever know. >> he was an experienced mountain climber. this was his third time scaling everest. >> we threw him a big party before he left. but you just -- especially with dan you don't assume -- you just assume he'd be able to get out of it. >> reporter: his sister posted a message on his israel -- instagram page saying he died after suffering a severe head injury in the avalanche. he was called inspirational, an activist out to make a difference and live life to the fullest. tom taplin, also from california. >> you see this? you can go. >> reporter: the documentary filmmaker was working on a project called base camp. interviewing climbers who stay on the mountain. meanwhile, help is on the way. an emergency task force from virginia should arrive in nepal tonight to provide aid. search and rescue teams from california are expected tomorrow.

a private memorial is getting under way for fredinburg within the half hour in san francisco. a fund-raiser in his memory will help two nepal orphanages. >> alyssa thank you. bay area tech giants have been quick to step up in the wake of the disaster. google's person finder aim to help people check on the status of their loved ones and apple is making it easy for itunes users to donate to the american red cross. >> the red cross has set up a website with a status update. you type in the person's name and it says missing or i am alive if they have checked in since the disaster. we posted a link on our website. if you'd like to help the victims in nepal, we have a list of organizations that are accepting donations. head to our website, abc 7 news.com and you will see the information on the home page. we'll have continuing

coverage of the nepal earthquake on air and online at abc 7 news.com and you can get the latest on twitter. now to other news, new information on the little boy from discovery bay who was stabbed to death yesterday. sadly authorities say it was at the hands of a family friend. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield has the latest. >> reporter: laura, this community is hurting. look at this memorial outside the boy's home that continues to grow. he's described as a third grader who is very popular and who played baseball. before heading off to timber point elementary school today, many parents in discovery bay had to have a very tough conversation with their children. >> something terrible happened. you need to sit down and listen. and that i loved him very much. >> reporter: one of their classmates, 9-year-old jordanle offal again was murdered yesterday morning. he was stabbed to death in his home. parents were clearly emotional

at school drop-off today and school administrators say the staff is devastated too. they'll try to create normalcy for the children and will be watching the students closely. >> do they have any questions and if they do, we have many counselors and many psychologists on campus today. >> reporter: investigators believe jordan was killed by 18-year-old william schultz. he is friends with one of jordan's older siblings. officers have shultz in custody. many believe that shultz suffering from mental illness. parents of the classmates say the family is in their thoughts. >> i'm heart sick. and i can't even imagine how that poor family must feel. it's devastating. this is not the type of community that things like this happen here. >> reporter: investigators tell us they plan to release more information about this case later this afternoon. reporting live in discovery bay

amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thanks so much. right now breaking news, near sacramento. you can see the scene here where a woman has been shot on a busy road in carmichael prompting sheriff's deputies to lock down a nearby elementary school. it's an active shooter situation and the police don't have anyone in custody at this time. no word on the woman's condition. sunnyvale police are investigating a deadly accident between a car and a bicyclist. sky 7 hd was up over the scene shortly after this happened at 8:20 this morning and the man on the bicycle died. the person in the car is cooperating with police. the crash happened near fremont high school but the school says that no staff or students were involved. police say it looks as though either the driver or the bicyclist might have run a red light. in san francisco, the medical examiner is trying to determine how a woman died. her body was discovered at an upscale apartment building. it was found on the staircase

about 3:00 this morning. it's directly across the street from the ritz carlton hotel. police tell abc 7 news they do not believe there was any foul play. b.a.r.t. service is back to normal after smoke filled a san francisco station with smoke. it happened at the 16th street mission station at 7:15 this morning. passengers got off the train safely and were evacuated while crews ventilated the station. this is what it looked like on the platform as the smoke filled the air. this photo posted by erin eske. big shocker for 16,000 mostly low income students attending college campuses. they learned the schools are shut down. that announcement came in an e-mail yesterday from corinthian colleges which runs hill college. we have more from the san francisco campus. janet? >> reporter: and cheryl, as of this morning, no one the being led in through the doors. students trying to go to class

they were turned away. they had no idea their school was closing and now they're scrambling to figure out what to do next. students were greeted by security guards in san francisco. through the glass door, they informed the students that the school is closed. >> i'm angry. >> reporter: the students were given the letter of explanation a little too late. >> if they knew it was going to close down, they should have given it ahead of time. this is waste of money, my education. a year and a half in this school. >> reporter: they would have graduated in october. >> i was so close. >> she's not sure if her credits will be transferred and when she will get her money back. cruz is one of 16,000 students displaced after corinthian college announced it was shutting down 28 campuses that including four locations in the bay area. the for profit college has been dealing with fraud allegations that ranges from falsifying job placement data, grades and attendance records. as a result, the department of education said it would fine the

company $30 million. some students say despite the allegations they had a good experience. >> i just came to this country and i want to finish my career. i was very, very satisfied with the education that they were giving to me. >> reporter: now, students were told to come back on wednesday and thursday to pick up their transcripts. corinthian college says that it tried to sell the college to another institution to help make -- to help students make a seamless transfer but the move was blocked by the state attorney general. reporting live at san francisco janet oh abc 7 news. >> thank you so much. we have word that the sae house at stanford was tagged with anti-semitic graffiti over the weekend. the san francisco police are

as the baltimore community gathered to remember freddy gray today officials there are worried about the safety of law enforcement officers. gray died after suffering a critical spinal injury while he was in police custody. family and friends laid him to rest this morning. at the same time, baltimore police say there is credible information that members of three gangs have entered into partnership to take out law enforcement officers. gray's death has sparked marches and rallies for more than a week. his family wants details about the injury he suffered. and happening now, opening statements are set to begin in colorado in the trial of the man accused of killing 12 people in the movie theater in 2012. let's take a live look right now inside the courtroom in centennial, colorado. 27-year-old james holmes is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 70 others.

that's going to cool your temperatures and bring cloudiness back by the time we get to sunset. it is pretty quiet out there. look on the left side of your screen, and you can see the clouds coming down on the northwest wind. and that's what's going to fill a lot of the bay tonight. also bring a cooling trend for the next couple of days. we're 64 right now in half moon bay. 66 in oakland. napa, 69. everybody else in the 70. and this is the way it looks across the east bay hills. maybe greener than they were before the nice soaking rain friday night. you can see a few high clouds and a lot of sunshine. same thing down in the south bay as we look around the shark tank. let's look at something that is going to bother us. no, not the beach. it looks gorgeous in santa cruz but the air quality. tree pollen still high. grass pollen still moderate. and pine, the latest that are bringing us the allergy season. also i want to talk about pollution. today begins our summer spare

the air season. we don't have to worry about any smog today. it looks pretty clean. it will be warmer away from the coast today but all of us will have a middle week cooling trend and it will warm again thursday and friday and then cool again back to normal levels for the weekend. so we've got a very roller coasteresque forecast with unfortunately no real rain as we end april and begin may. low to mid 80s in the south bay. we'll have mid 70s to near 80s with half moon bay at 76. 76 in downtown san francisco. with upper 70s in petaluma. mostly low to mid 80s through the north bay valley. mid to upper 7 0s along the shore line. you can see the fog coming in tonight. and temperatures in the low to mid 50s. here's a look at my seven-day forecast, the marine layer is
