v making news in america this morning -- baltimore burning. a city in chaos at this hour. looting, buildings on fire, and protesters clashing with police officers, all this stemming from the mysterious death of freddie gray. we're live in baltimore. growing concern in nepal following the monster quake and aftershocks. shelter, food and medical sup plies running short. but small glimmers of hope. rescues on mt. everest. one survivor pulled from the rubble three days after the quake. and the video will take your breath away. a group of young students nearly blindsided by a passing suv coming within inches. and sea lion scare. it looks like a cute animal. photo bomb. this image is the start of a

terrifying few seconds for this fisherman. and good tuesday morning to you all. we have to start with the breaking news out of baltimore. a shocking day of violence and looting that spilled into the early morning hours. >> some neighborhoods in shambles this morning after demonstrators' outrage. over police brutality stormed the streets, attacking officers stripping stores clean. and setting buildings and squad cars on fire. outnumbered police making more than two dozen arrests. >> the national guard rolled in overnight, helping to restore order. hours after the governor of maryland declared a state of emergency. the city on edge, schools are closed today. and a curfew takes effect later on. >> we have team coverage beginning with abc's elizabeth hur on the ground in baltimore. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, reena and t.j. yes, not only is the national guard here. but police from across the state.

they've been called in to get in position and as you say, to begin the process of restoring order. the maryland national guard is on the streets of baltimore this morning as family of freddie gray makes a plea asking protesters to remain peaceful. >> i want y'all to get justice for my son. but don't do it like this here. >> reporter: this following near chaos yesterday. >> this is not protesting. this is not your first amendment rights. this is just criminal acts doing damage to a community that is challenged in some ways that do not need this. >> reporter: for hour. after hour monday the streets of baltimore belonged the violent mobs looting businesses humbling police with rocks and bricks. >> ow! >> reporter: injuring 15 police officers, 6 of them seriously. the roof of this police car was stomped in. another one set on fire. this cvs pharmacy was looted and then set in flames.

police arresting dozens but unable to take control. the mayor imposed a city-wide curfew beginning tonight from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. >> too many people have spent generations building up this city. for it to be destroyed by thugs. >> reporter: it all started after an emotional funeral service for gray the black man who died of a spinal injury while in police custody. >> we're putting out a request for up to 5,000 law enforcement from the regional area to assist us as well. >> reporter: authorities are hoping a show of overwhelming force will prevent another night like this. again, that city-wide curfew goes into effect tonight. officials say that means if you're out it's a medical emergency or you are going to work. reena and t.j.? >> elizabeth, has the mayor addressed why the curfew was called for tonight and not last

night? >> reporter: oh, yes. the mayor did address that at a press conference late last night. she said she had to give the schools the notification, the businesses. essentially it came down to logistics. and remember the added resources as for as the law enforcement end is concerned, they are not only part of them here, but they're still and they need -- the officials needed to give them the time to get in position. reena and t.j.? >> elizabeth hur live in baltimore. thank you. >> police are vowing to do everything they can to protect the community and fellow officers. they called in help from neighboring towns. >> our coverage continues with tim poole from our sister network fusion who has been live-streaming from the streets of baltimore all night long. >> reporter: when we first arrived, we came up to north and fulton. and we saw this intersection. the cars were on fire at this intersection. police drove an apc into the intersection.

protesters threw bottles and other debris at it. then a row of riot police moved in started firing bean bags, pepper balls. big, loud booms. from there, we chased a few other leads. we saw fires. we have seen groups walking around with sledge hammers. crowbars. just driving down the road we saw a pawnshop looted. people walking out with mac books. we have seen three active fires. shortly after that, the police reoccupied north and fulton. that's what we just saw. for those tuning in, thank you so much for watching. >> that's fusion's tim poole there. our thanks to him. you can stay with us for the latest on the unrest in baltimore. more later in this half hour as well as just a bit on "good morning america." turning overseas to another major story that's unfolding. disaster in nepal. the death toll now has surpassed 4,000. rescue crews, nearly all of the country's 100,000 soldiers scrambled to find survivors in

the rubble. one such rescue coming overnight. a man trapped between walls of a collapsed building found alive overnight. he had been there 62 hours. his rescue is hot the only one. we see from susan saulny. >> reporter: rescuers in nepal raced to pull survivors from underneath the rubble. in the wake of saturday's massive earthquake. finding glimmers of hope among a death toll that's rocketed past 4,000. workers pulled this man from a mountain of rock. he had been buryied for two days but when they touched his arm, he responded. he was still alive. for so many others, time is running out. from the sky, the full extent of the devastation is revealed. whole villages reduced to debris. the people desperate for food, medicine and shelter. many sleeping outside for a third chilly night. the disaster began to unfold after noon on saturday. an american photographer described evacuating a plane as the earthquake struck in the capital city of kathmandu.

>> it was the type of screaming and shrills that i think equate to a horror movie. really, i mean, it was just -- there was panic. pandemonium. >> reporter: on mt. everest, the last of the known climbers are being rescued. an avalanche triggered by the tremors has claimed the lives of 18 people, including 4 americans. helicopters have been make loops between base camp and camp one to rescue over 200 people trapped by falling ice. >> people are trapped above the ice fall. the job of these three pilots is to extract as many of them as they can -- in the time they've got. >> reporter: susan saulny, abc news, washington. breaking news overnight from japan. police are investigating a possible attack against a u.s. army base near tokyo. a pair of missile launchers were found near the base after reports of an explosion. an army spokesman tells abc news these kinds of incidents are rare but not unprecedented. the obamas host a state dinner for the japanese prime minister

tonight alt the white house. it's not clear if that is related. relief on the way for texas. after several rounds of severe weather. a driver in beaumont got this video of hail collecting in the bed of his pickup truck. kind of looks like snow. >> people plowed through the muddy water. at least eight tornadoes touched down on sunday. that severe weather lingers in alabama, florida, and georgia. damaging wind and hail are the biggest threats. an isolated tornado can't be ruled out. flash floods possible. well still ahead, why the government is urging a change to the drinking water coming out of your tap. would-be school shooter stopped. the teacher who took him down now being called a hero. we'll return to the breaking news out of baltimore. riots erupting well into the night. we have the latest and see what one mom did henwhen she saw her son rioting.

well, activists on both sides of the gay marriage issue squaring off today outside the supreme court. inside, the nine justices take the historic step of taking up the issue. a patchwork of legislative changes and legal decisions has made same-sex marriage legal in all but 14 states. today, justices will hear arguments on whether the constitution keeps the states from defining marriage as a union between man and a woman. it's expected to be another emotional day in a colorado courtroom after opening day of the movie theater massacre

trial. opening statements in the trial was where prosecutors described the horrible night. they saw video of james holmes telling psychiatrists his goal was a high death count. in two exams, he's been found to be sane at the time of the attack. but he's pleading inging not guilty by reason of insanity. a teacher in washington state is being called a hero after tackling an armed student. brady olson took down the student. he said he did what any other u.s. educator would do. he ran toward the gunfire instead of away from it. students say they're not surprised the teacher sprang into action. but they're shocked by the armed student. >> part-time teacher, part-time superhero. >> he talked to everybody. he talked to the teachers. he was the last person i expected to, like, do something like this. like -- so it was shocking to find out it was him. >> police say the student told them he was having problems in personal relationships and never meant to hurt anyone. well, when we come back close call for students accepting on a bus. the dramatic moment caught on camera. and boxing gloves at a baseball game.

national guard troops arrived in the city overnight, hoping to restore calm after a day of widespread violence. >> looters protesting the unexplained death of a black man who was in police custody. they emptied shore shelves, threw rocks at police officers set fires. the mayor calling it a very dark time for the city. >> i understand anger. but what we're seeing is not anger. it's destruction of a community. the same community they say they care around they're destroying. you can't have it both ways. >> schools in baltimore closed today. a city-wide curfew starts at 10:00 tonight. police made an appeal to parents to get their child off the streets. one irate mom does just that. she found her son with looters. she got physical in front of everybody. did not back down. forcing him to get out of there and go home. he might be a bit embarrassed.

she might have been a bit aggressive. we're assuming that kid is safe this morning. that's all that matters. champion ufc fighter john jones is out of jail this morning after turning himself in to police in albuquerque, new mexico. he was reelsed on $2500 bond with charges of leaving the scene of an accident that left a pregnant woman with a broken wrist and arm. so far, jones 57z fight in las vegas next month has not officially been called off. the sedge is on near seattle for a driver who nearly ran over several kids about to get on a school bus. this video will give you chills. that white suv speeds by. you see that. the door was open. the kids were try tolg get on the bus. he goes between the bus and the kids. nobody was hurt here. the mothers say the suv drove

. live from the kgo broadcast center. this is abc 7 news. >> good tuesday morning. we're going to start early traffic troubles out there on 880. >> we have some video just a few minutes ago. this is a fiery scene. at least five vehicles were involved on this accident northbound 880 just past davis street in san leandro. we have multiple vehicle and injuries involved. right now, all traffic is being held at davis so no cars are being allowed through right now. they will eventually open the shoulder, but you can get off at davis to get around this, as you can see we have multiple emergency crews on scene. the fire department and just a terrible, terrible crash. again, this is northbound 880 right at davis street. this happened just a little

all this sparked by the death of a suspect in police custody. abc 7 news reporter liz harrington is live in the newsroom. >> reporter: things are so bad in baltimore the governor declared a state of emergency and he also activated the national guard who are there now and who will help enforce a 10:00 p.m. curfew later tonight. we have aerial shots. police officers are down there bracing for more possible riots later on today. a much different scene from last night. this was what it looked like. very chaotic when protests turned violent and destructive. several fires broke out. angry protesters rye yotd toiching police cars, and threw bricks. one -- 15 police officers were hurt. some hit by tossed bricks and bottles. two of them are being treated at a hospital. >> this is not protesting.
