ence erupts and police are attacked. all this sparked by the death of a suspect in police custody. abc 7 news reporter liz harrington is live in the newsroom. >> reporter: things are so bad in baltimore the governor declared a state of emergency and he also activated the national guard who are there now and who will help enforce a 10:00 p.m. curfew later tonight. we have aerial shots. police officers are down there bracing for more possible riots later on today. a much different scene from last night. this was what it looked like. very chaotic when protests turned violent and destructive. several fires broke out. angry protesters rye yotd toiching police cars, and threw bricks. one -- 15 police officers were hurt. some hit by tossed bricks and bottles. two of them are being treated at a hospital. >> this is not protesting. this is not your first amendment

rights. this is just criminal acts doing damage to a community that is challenged in some ways that do not need this. >> reporter: the demonstrations were sparked from the death of 25-year-old freddie gray. his funeral was yesterday. he died in police custody. he suffered a spinal cord injury during his arrest and was not given immediate medical attention. his family meanwhile says they are disturbed by this violence. tonight's orioles-white sox game could be affected about because of safety issues and curfew. the game might be moved to a different location or played earlier in the day. thank you. many people in baltimore are not happy with the violence. that includes this mom who went after her son in the middle of the street. she apparently recognized him on tv even though he was wearing a mask. the mother has been hailed as a hero on social media. police commissioner anthony bass who you just saw there who used to be oakland's police chief

says he wished there were more parents like her out there. 100 protesters in oakland took to the streets last night in support of demonstrators in baltimore. it started at 6:30 and lasted two hours. it moved from the downtown area to i-80. they were prevented from getting on the freeway. the march was mostly peaceful. drummers and dancers joined at one point but there was a small fire set in the middle of the street at broadway and 17th. it was quickly put out and caused no damage. once the main group dispersed, a small group broke windows at a bar and sprayed graffiti on nearby businesses. we'll have continuing coverage of the baltimore riots on air and on line our coverage continues now on twitter and abc 7 news bay area. happening today, the u.s. supreme court will take up a

case that could legitimatize same-sex marriage in all 50 states. the issue whether or not same-sex couples have the constitutional right to marry. the high court will also explore whether states which do not support smarnlings must -- same-sex marriages, must recognize unions that are legal elsewhere. you may recall he was the one who touched off a national debate about same-sex marriage in 2004 as mayor of san francisco. he ordered city hall to begin issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples. he went against the advice of democratic party leaders at the time. 4:33 now, in nepal, the death toll continues to escalate. authorities say at least 4,400 are dead following saturday's powerful 7.8 magnitude

earthquake. the prime minister told reuters the death toll could reach 10,000. the united nations estimates 8 million people are affected and 1.5 million need food. hundreds of thousands are still sleeping outside without clean water or sanitation. so many relief flights are arriving at kathmandu airport it's creating major backups on the tarmac. organizers say 20,000 nepalese live in northern california. they gathered at a restaurant to hold a moment of silence and coordinate fundraising and relief efforts. >> whatever we can select to -- collect to send them. that's the reason why. >> it didn't hit me until i watched the news. all the places i grew up were in dust. we tried to contact our family. we couldn't get ahold of anyone. >> a separate vigil also was

motive. 18-year-old william schultz says he killed his best friend's brother to see what it was like. he says he was remorseful and wishes he hadn't done it. jordan omgren was stabbed inside his home on monday. the day before, the deputies received a mental health call from schultz's family. >> they determined he did not meet the criteria. you have to have some kind of threat to themselves or to others or that they are gravely disabled. >> schultz is being held at the martinez jail on $1 million. an elementary school teacher in the east bay who claims he was comforting students is facing criminal charges this morning. police say derek hunter inappropriately touched girls in his fourth grade class at lake elementary school in san pablo. the students say hunter would

have him sit on his lap. several girls reported to the principal who alerted police. the school informed parents about the investigation. officials will be at more than a dozens around california to assist students two days after corinthian colleges announced it was shutting down all 28 schools in the state. 16,000 students attend the colleges and vocational schools run by corinthian. san francisco's public utilities commissions is expected to approve a new set of mandatory water restrictions later today. the new measures are being proposed in direct response to the state's call to conserve more water because of the drought. outdoor watering is banned

hours after it rains. and water will only be served to guests when asked. water hogs in the east bay will be subject to new fines and penalties soon. a second reading will be held to increase fees for customers who use too much water. users have only conserved 6% of water this year. far short of the 20% goal of the district. they will consider $25 million to buy a one to two-month supply of water from three northern california water districts. big problems on 880 northbound this morning. >> major problems. a fiery 7-car pile-up on 880 knob on davis street. crews are on scene. we have all lanes shut down northbound 880 just past davis.

all traffic is being diverted off. no word on when things are going to reopen. this all started with a solo spin-out and other cars smashed into that car. you can see just all the damage that resulted. we do have multiple injuries. everyone has been taken to area hospitals right now. it doesn't sound like we have any southbound lanes shut down and northbound traffic being diverted at davis street. that means we've got big delays coming away from 238. right out of hayward you can see terrible traffic. 580 that would be another al nat route. all lanes shut down until further northbound, 880 at davis street. we're also getting another alert, another crash at willow. we have a wind advisory on the san mateo bridge. keep both hands on the wheel.

4:43 open a tuesday morning. in the east bay, voters have rejected a ballot measure that would could have kept two fire districts open.

53% voted against the proposal that would have generated more than $20 million over five years for the fire department. officials say station 54 in brentwood will remain closed and station 94 in nightton will also close very soon. that will leave the county with three remaining fire stations in oakley, discovery bay and brentwood. four firefighter positions will be eliminated by july 1st. scott wiener will propose a panel to deal specifically with marijuana legalization. all the issues will be dealt with should pot be legalized. there will be a proposition to legalize pot by 2016. 4:44. let's talk about the hottest ticket in town. this morning the warriors will hold another practice at the

the bay. notice along the coast it will start to clear from north to south but may never leave the peninsula coast clean there. 50s, around the bay, 80s, go out highway 4 and into the central valley. everybody else in the low to mid 70s until you get to los at 75. we'll drop down to 65 and breezy conditions by the time you get to melbright. half moon bay 59. pacifica 57. mid 60s downtown, south san francisco. with that breeze definitely not going to be as warm as it was around noon yesterday before that big 20-degree drop happened in the afternoon hours. we'll have low to mid 70s through both of the north bay. santa rosa could jump up to 79. mid to upper 60s around the
