broadcast center. this is abc 7 news. good afternoon and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm larry beil. >> first at 4:00 puffs of smoke billowing today from a senior center hours after the rioting started yesterday afternoon and last night. federal authorities are investigate if that fire was set on purpose. church leaders believe it was. this is just one of at least 19 buildings that burned overnight. protesters looted businesses and clashed with police. >> it started after the funeral of freddie gray a black man who died earlier this month in police custody. protesters are on the street and they've blocked traffic and were face-to-face with police, but it has remained peaceful. >> quite a different scene

anything but peaceful. baltimore's police captain said at least 20 officers were injured and a 235 arrests, 34 of those were juveniles and the governor said 2,000 national guard troops will be in the city by the end of the day. abc news reporter karen travers. >> reporter: today in baltimore they're picking up the pieces. >> yesterday it broke my heart. today i feel proud. >> reporter: this west side neighborhood was the scene of chaos overnight. fires, looting vehicles destroyed. now residents here are coming together to clean up the broken glass and debris, trying to help local businesses get back on their feet. >> we saw people coming together to reclaim our city to clean our city and to help heal our city. i think this can be our defining moment and not the darket day that we saw yesterday. >> maryland governor larry hogan walked through some of the hardest hit areas and promised

things will be different tonight. >> criminal activity will not be tolerated. we're not going to have another repeat of what happened last night. >> reporter: strong words today from president obama. >> a handful of criminals and thugs who tore up the place. >> reporter: he said what happened in baltimore was not a protest. >> when individuals get crowbars and start prying open doors to loot, they're not protesting. >> reporter: officials say overnight there were 144 vehicle fires, 15 structure fires around 500 maryland national guardsmen are supporting law enforcement officials in baltimore. that number will increase to 2 thousand. today parts of baltimore are shut down and city schools and the national aquarium closed. the orioles canceled their second home game in a row. >> officials are urging folks to stay off the streets. a curfew goes into effect at 10:00 p.m. tonight. karen travers abc news

baltimore. >> as karen mentioned today's scheduled orioles game was cancelled and tomorrow's game will go on as scheduled and for the first time ever in major league history it will be played without a single fan watching in person and they will play in an empty stadium. the weekend home series against the tampa bay rays is being moved to st. petersburg florida. there is concern in oakland this afternoon that protesters will return there tonight. about a hundred protesters marched in solidarity last night. sky 7 hd shows them crossing interstate 980 after protesters left, they broke windows of two businesses and organizers said they'll be back out tonight. >> we will have continuing coverage of the riots in baltimore on air and on-line and our coverage continues right now on twitter on abc 7 news bay area. for now we do want to check on our weather. we are seeing cooler temperatures this afternoon. >> for just a little bit, spencer christian is here with the accuweather update. >> it will be warm. >> just a cooldown for a short

time i should say and a pleasant day right now. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. thin, high clouds and not much going on at the coast right now. here's a look from the emoriville camera looking at the western sky and it is in the 70s this time yesterday. 65 yesterday and 70 san jose and 57 at half moon bay. there is a great view of blue sky from the rooftop camera on abc 7 and it is currently at 76 in santa rosa and 77 fairfield and concord, 79 and 76 at livermore and as we look westward from the east bay hills camera we'll see mostly clear skies this evening with patchy, coastal fog developing later and it will linger until the early morning hours. sunny and mild, warm inland with highs reaching into the mid-80s in some spots and as larry pointed out and i will reinforce that forecast. temperatures will be rising sharply later in the week and i'll have the forecast coming up

shortly. >> larry and ama? >> thank you spencer. >> this definition has been with us for millenia and it's very difficult for the court to say oh, well we know better. >> as protesters gathered outside the supreme court, inside the justices debated whether to change the definition of marriage. the supreme court heard arguments today on whether same-sex couples should have the right to marry. >> the nine justices must decide whether to legalize gay marriage, that is, in every state. brandy hit shows you why one justice in particular will likely cast the deciding vote. >> reporter: a show of solidarity on the steps of the u.s. supreme court in the fight for same-sex marriage. >> the justices looked at us today. they saw our families and they saw our love. >> a family like us will be considered equal under the law. >> inside the nine justices appeared split on whether the constitution guarantees same-sex couples the right to marry. >> i do.

>> reporter: with the deciding vote likely coming from justice anthony kennedy. >> this definition has been with us for millenia, and it's very difficult for the court to say we know better. >> same-sex marriage is legal in 34 states and washington, d.c. the court also hearing arguments that the remaining 13 states like michigan be forced to recognize gay marriages performed in other states. opponents are fighting back. >> when the court takes social decisions like this away from the people it cuts off debate. >> it's about upholding a particular ideal to give kids the best shot at being reared by their own mom and dad. >> in michigan adopted children in same-sex household are only considered to have one parent something these families hope to change. >> hopefully we're on the right side of history and our kids will now have equal protection. thank you. >> reporter: this historic decision on same-sex marriage is expected by the end of june.

brandy hit, abc news los angeles. supportes of same-sex marriage are holding a rally in san francisco in about an hour. activists handed out flyers in the castro district inviting people attending the event. those at the center of this issue for years can't believe this day is finally here. >> my heart is beating so fast. this is a historic day. we are finally on the very edge of call itd for all citizens. >> these advocates say it has been a long road. they vividly remember when then mayor gavin newsom defied the law and allowed gay couples to marry in san francisco back in 2004. now to the disaster in nepal. the country's prime minister said today as many as 10,000 people may have died from saturday's earthquake. >> emergency responders and volunteers frantically searched for anybody still alive and may be buried in the rubble. drone footage shows the extent in the village not far from

kathmandu and terns of thousands of people are living in tent cities and too afraid of aftershocks to return to their homes. >> the current death toll is 4600 people and at least 9,000 more are injured. united nations estimates 8 million people were affected by the 7.8 magnitude quake. several people from the bay area were in nepal when the quake hit. some survivors startsed returning today, but others are still missing. >> abc news reporter sergio quintana is in petaluma where one family is frantically trying to track down a young man who hasn't checked in since that disaster. sergio? >> reporter: since this disaster there is a few social media companies that have launched new tools to help people who were there check in with their families here and 21-year-old spencer dickinson has not checked in with his family, so they are launching a social media campaign of their own to try to find him. the last time 21-year-old spencer dickinson's family heard from him was a few days before

the earthquake. he spoke with his mother and he was in a village that i guess is the beginning to the trekking route of the base camp of everest. >> reporter: he's got a parent's intuition that spencer is arrive and he's hoping that somehow they make contact again. >> today with social media there's a new kind of access than we've had before, and we're hoping that for instance me being here that somebody may have a connection with somebody down there in that area. >> dickinson says he would fly to nepal to look for his son. he knows the country is badly damaged by the quake and ongoing aftershocks. meanwhile, some bay area residents are finally on their way home. one is a survivor of this massive avalanche on mt. everest triggered by this weekend's quake. >> he had the unfortunate job of loading the casualties on to the helicopter and then he and his buddies were able to get off the mountain by helicopter. >> her husband john raider spent

petaluma and all the bay area this is abc 7 news. two people are in the hospital this afternoon fl leing this fiery multi-car accident on 808 in san leandro. it involves at least five cars near the davis street overcrossing at 2:00. the chp says it seems the vehicle spun out triggering a chain reaction. one of the two people taken in the hospital is listed in critical condition. the freeway was partially closed for two hours, but all lanes were cleared just in time for the morning commute. this afternoon the state is pledging to help heal college students who paid thousands of dollars in tuition only to see their school suddenly shut down. laura anthony is live at the concord campus with the details. laura? >> hi ama. the fallout continues at this campus and there's along with a certain amount of anger. one student told us that it appears that the staff and faculty were given a head's up about this closure, but not the

>> this is a traumatic experience for them and we're here to outreach for them. >> the state does have a reinforcement fund and are producing applications if students to see if they're eligible. laura anthony abc 7 news. the national football league is giving up its tax-exempt status. the league office and the management council will file tax returns as taxable entities for the 2015 year. the league has been tax-exempt although to be clear individual teams do pay taxes. members of congress have criticized the nfl which generates billions of dollars in revenue. goodell said that status has become a distraction and he said this change will not alter the function since all 32 teams already do pay their individual taxes. shares of twitter tumbled today after a disappointing earnings report that was leaked early. twitter stock trading was

briefly halted after the firm reported the company's halt in a series of tweets. the firm denies leaking the report and it got the numbers from the investor relations website while the earnings per share topped estimates and its revenue fell short because of a slowdown in user growth. twitter's stock closed down 18% to $42.27 a share. >> president obama and shinzo abe declared talks toward a massive new trade agreement. the two leaders held a joint news conference where they stopped short in announcing a negotiation and the 12-nation trade deal would open markets around the pacific rim to u.s. exports. >> there are many japanese cars in america. i want to see more american cars in sdwra in japan as well. tpp will help level the playing field and it would be good for the workers in both our countries. mr. obama hailed the u.s.-japan partnership as indestructible. tomorrow he will become the

japanese prime minister to address a joint meeting of congress. on thursday he arrives in los angeles for a three-day stay in california that includes a stop in the bay area. the president is hosting mr. abe at a state dinner tonight. this is video from just a few moments ago of the obamas welcoming the prime minister and his wife to the white house. the event marks the first time the obama state dining china will be used. the menu includes beef tenderloin caesar salad wrapped like a japanese gift and custard cake. it will be the first state dinner the obamas have hosted inside the white house since 2011. previous dinners were held in a tent on the south lawn to accommodate more guests. >> it looks like a nice event. our weather is quite nice and cooler than yesterday. that will change, though spencer christian, won't it? >> it will change rather quickly. just as quickly as it cooled down it will warm up. here's live doppler 7 hd and we have a few thin high clouds around. a lovely day, but check out the 24-hour temperature change.

this hour yesterday we had temperatures in the upper 80s in many inland locations and half moon bay is significantly cooler. hayward, 13 degrees cooler and 18 degrees cooler than at this hour and napa 13 degrees cooler and san francisco, 2 degrees cooler and here's a view of the camera with thin wispy high clouds and you'll see patchy, coastal fog tonight and sunny tomorrow and breezy along the coast, though, and we'll see 90-degrees plus on thursday and perhaps friday as well. here's the satellite image producing a steady breeze and temperatures will rebound on thursday as this ridge of high pressure builds in after the front has passed through and we'll have two days of very warm weather. tomorrow check out the high temperature range and only upper 50s on the coast generally and breezy and lower 70s around the bay and a few low 80s inland but on thursday we'll so low 90s in some inland areas and mid-80s

the french spider-man on the 689-foot tower without ropes and equipment, free climbing, just using his hands and he called it an act of solidarity for the victims of saturday's earthquake in nepal. he has climbed one of the tallest and best known structures including the golden gate bridge and the eiffel tower and taipei 101 the world's tallest building when it opened in 2004. >> just watching that. >> it is scary. also hard to believe this is the tenth year of "dancing with the stars," tonight abc will say happy birthday with a special edition of the hit show and george pen akio shows us how after all these years the show is really much more than just dancing. >> reporter: the tradition of winning the "dancing with the stars" trophy began with kellmon co in 2005, star after star after star has worked hard to claim that shiny prize. and to celebrate all those

abroad? >> our vic lee has learned that a recruiter for the london fire department approached his wife to become chief there. vic lee is in the newsroom with the story. >> this is a total surprise. abc 7 news has learned that longtime san francisco fire chief joanne hayes white is being courted to apply for the london fire department chief's position. only a few people knew about this, but now she's ready to make it public. the question is will she take the job if it's offered to her? >> when i got the phone call i was a bit surprised and very intrigued. >> the call to fire chief joanne hayes white came from london. you heard right. london england. would the chief consider apply a soon to be vacant position chief of the fire london department or commissioner of the fire london brigade. hayes-white would go from a department with 1500 firefighters to one with 6,000

firefighter. she'd move from a city of 800,000 residents to a metropolis of 8 million people and a budget more than twice the $250 million she administers as chief here. it's a tough choice for the longest-serving fire chief in the country and the only female chief of an urban fire department. she's been at the helm 11 years and implemented many reforms. >> and then of course i have my most important role is being a mom, and considering my family and what any opportunity would mean to them, as well. >> reporter: but the chief also has had difficult times in recent years. a testy relationship with the firefighters' union over an ambulance shortage and understaffing. those issues resulting in a no-confidence vote last year. that coupled with her suspensions of firefighters and assistant chiefs in the aftermath of an accident involving a fire rig and motorcycle. ironically, those challenges may be one of the reasons why she's being approached.

>> i think that was probably one the reason yes i received the call. i was encouraged to apply for the position in that i've dealt with different political -- a very political environment and a very strong presence of labor. >> reporter: so is chief hayes-white going to apply for the job? >> contemplating. contemplating at this time. that's a good way to put it. >> reporter: well chief hayes-white says she is proud of the members of the department and feels that's one of the reasons why they approached her because of their professionalism and she wanted to emphasize that while she's flattered she's focused on her job here and loves living in san francisco but hayes-white adds she's always ready for a challenge so we'll wait and see. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> interesting opportunity. thank you, vic. a sus pibbs package in san jose this morning turned out to be a false alarm and the fire department evacuated part of the office building at 10:00 a.m.

while the hazmat team analyzed the substance in the building. officials gave the all clear and everybody went back to work. back to our coverage now of the disaster in nepal. some bay area residents who were in the country during the deadly quake last saturday started returning home today. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen told us about the terrifying ordeal. >> reporter: at the international terminal at sfo. >> i needed to call 20 25 times just to get the one call through. >> with a dozen red rhodesoses by his side, he anxiously awaits the arrival of his wife who was in nepal when the quake hit. >> we get so used to internet and phones and when everything goes down you get panicked when you can't contact. >> as dozens of passengers walked through we caught up with jonathan ku who was traveling the country. he was ready to place his order

at a kathmandu coffee shop. >> it started shaking and a lot of screaming. a lot of people hiding out and i hid under a table with a waiter. an experience that left him shake tone the core. >> a lot of us were just done and staring up at the buildings wondering, where was it safe? what was going on? >> reporter: after days of waiting for a flight, ku was able to make it out safely. >> it seemed like emotionally everything started to hit me all at once. downstairs at baggage claim, he was reunited with his wife. i am just happy she made it out safely and as they're grateful for their return to american soil. >> it feels good to be home and hopefully soon see my wife and my family, and it feels good to be back at least. >> the busyness of this arrival hall that pales in comparison to what they saw in nepal. each of the travelers felt they were tired and exhausted and they just wanted to go home and take a shower knowing that this shower is a luxury compared to what those in nepal are going

long shot. >> they were abducted assaulted and abused for more than a decade. tonight on a special edition of "20/20," robin roberts talks with two young women who were terrorized inside the home. amanda berry was 13 when she was kidnapped and gina dejesus was 14 when she was taken a year later. the two have written a memoir of the ten years trapped inside the home of ariel castro. the women said castro sexually assaulted them repeatedly and there were beatings and starvation and the two should somehow learned how to cope. >> they were able to watch television and they would see their family and friends over the years, how they never gave up hope and it made it so they were not going to give up hope. >> that hope was realized in 2013 when amanda was able to escape and lead authorities to the other women being held. ariel castro would be tried and convicted and died in prison.

covering fremont, palo alto north bay and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. a major announcement today from tyson foods. the arkansas-based company says it will begin phasing out antibiotics and itsic whichens over the next few years. tyson is the latest poultry produce tore make this move over concerns of antibiotic resistant infections in humans. the food industry has been under pressure from consumer and public health advocates to come up with alternatives to keep chickens healthy. it has welcomed the move, move but called for an outright ban in agriculture. >> there are new findings about what alcohol use does to young people's brains. >> and research showing a bromance could be beneficial for

men. have to pay attention for this. >> jane king has more in today's wellness report. >> men who have male friend see benefits. having close connections with those of the same gender can be protective, but it also found that having high numbers of friends can lead to more stress. nearly six in ten u.s., woers ersworkers feel they are overweight. extremely stressed out workers were 49% more likely to be overweight. also the survey found 63% of workers with wellness benefits or a gym at work did not use those. when asked what qualities they want in a wife men said they value attractiveness and sweetness. only 34% said they wanted an independent partner. however, when asked what they wanted in a daughter, a high percentage said strength and intelligence. the results come from the shriver report an insight into the 21st century man.
