and good wednesday morning to you all. we start with law and order on the streets of baltimore overnight. following the worst rioting in the city since the 1960s. >> a mandatory curfew got off to a rough start last night. the police using smoke canisters and flash grenades against a defiant crowd refusing to go home. ten people were arrested. it did not take long to restore relative calm that lasted through the night. some moving images in the aftermath. hundreds of volunteers picking up brooms and trash bags to help clean up devastated neighborhoods. sweeping up glass and debris at the now infamous burned-out cvs. >> this striking photo going viral. and amid all the racial tension, a little boy handing out water with an outstretched hand to a white police officer dressed in riot gear.

that photo shared more than 60,000 times. >> as the curfew went into effect last night, community leads took it upon themselves to call for calm, despite the massive police presence. locking arms, as you see here, to create a buffer zone to protect the officers from some rowdy protesters. we get the latest from elizabeth hur. she's there for us. good morning to you, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. and reena. so far, authorities say this curfew is working. they say police arrested only ten people last night. compared to more than 200 from monday. >> the police officers. >> reporter: the 10:00 curfew came and went with some refusing to leave. others stood arm in arm trying to keep the peace. >> go home. is that too hard to do? why stay here and get in trouble? >> reporter: from above, you can see law enforcement wearing riot gear on one side. on the other, a few defiant group of demonstrators. about 30 minutes into the curfew, officers begin firing

flash bangs and tossing smoke canisters, which some protesters threw right back at the officers. >> the biggest thing is citizens are safe. the city is stable. we hope to maintain it that way. >> reporter: the scene, chaotic. but a far cry from 24 hours earlier, when rioters torched cars and businesses. sparking the new city-wide curfew. >> we're all frustrated. we just need to find a better way to deal with it. >> reporter: tuesday dawns with citizens and volunteers vowing to keep violence from taking over their streets. saying freddie gray, the 25-year-old whose death sparked such outrage, would not want this to happen to his city. the people, like this young boy handing out water to police, and this mother grabbing her son to take him off the streets are a true reflection of their heart, their home. well, for now, the curfew will remain in effect for a week. and authorities say the national guard will be out patrolling the

streets until it is necessary. reena and t.j., back to you. >> elizabeth, your impressions? you've been there a couple of days. a big difference between monday and tuesday after the curfew went into effect? >> reporter: granted, it's still a little early. but actually driving to our location here from our hotel, it was about a five-minute drive. i was telling my producer how it felt like a ghost town. the downtown streets feel like a ghost town. that's a sign that people are heeding the curfew laws. and also, the biggest difference i've noticed. yesterday, we were hearing sirens the fire engines, the police sirens, just about every hour. so far, i haven't heard a peep. >> elizabeth hur, live for us in baltimore. thank you so much. the tension in baltimore is forcing major league baseball to make history today. >> the orioles will play the white sox at camden yards without a crowd. the stadium closed to fans. it will be the first pro baseball game played behind closed doors ever. two earlier games were postponed because of the riots.

baltimore's upcoming series with tampa bay is being moved to florida. stay with abc news for the latest from baltimore. live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." turn to our other major story this morning. rescue efforts and the climbing death toll from the earthquake in nepal. >> officials say more than 5,000 people died in saturday's quake, which registered on monitors as far away as antarctica. estimates are that the number of dead could actually double. dozens of people in the devastated capital of kathmandu have been arrested for looting ruined homes. >> on the mt. everest side, climbers on the nepal side of the mountain when a deadly avalanche struck are now safe. 18 people, including 4 americans, died in the avalanche, which destroyed the everest base camp. 21-year-old spencer dickinson was on the mountain. his family in california hadn't heard from him since the avalanche. then he got in touch with his father, who called everybody else. >> i just heard from spencer. he just called me. [ sobbing ]

>> that is a great scene. some relief there. tears of relief in california. the current climbing season on mt. everest has been declared over. well, saudi arabia says it foiled an attack on the u.s. embassy there. government officials say nearly 100 people with ties to isis were arrested. they say the islamic fighters planned a series of attacks on the embassy and residential compounds where foreigners live. the state department has not provided any details about the attack or the plot. also, in the middle east, growing tensions between the u.s. and iran. the pentagon has sent a destroyer and a plane to the strait of hormuz. after the iranian military tried to intercept a cargo ship. officials say iranian forces fired across the bow of the "maersk tigris" when it refused to follow directions. no u.s. citizens are believed to be aboard the ship. the supreme court appears deeply divided over the issue of gay marriage. at stake, two major issues.

do same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry? and if not, must states with marriage bans recognize same-sex marriage licenses from other states? the landmark decision expected in late june. vermont senator bernie sanders plans to challenge hillary clinton for the democratic presidential nomination. sanders, who is registered an independent, is expected to afouns his bid -- announce his bid tomorrow ensuring clinton will have a rival on the liberal wing of the party. well, it was a big night at the white house last night. president obama hosting a state dinner for japan's visiting prime minister. among the familiar faces, seattle seahawks quarterback russell wilson who was there with singer ciara. george takei, i always mess up his name. poor guy, from "star trek" fame. he was there, too, with his husband. the food included beef tenderloin. and tofu cheesecake with honey from the white house beehive. the beautiful dress you see there. the first lady did her part.

stormy weather cow could cause airport delays in miami and charlotte. monday's looting, fires and violent crashes sparked by the death of freddie gray in police custody. >> 2,000 national guard troops are on the ground along with 1,000 officers. despite a few brief clashes and fen arrests, it was relatively calm last night. this morning, baltimore schools reopen. a united express flight from raleigh to newark had to make an emergency landing in philadelphia. the engine had caught fire. smoke began filling the cabin with 75 people on board. the passengers were told to be prepared far possible crash landing. >> yeah we let a -- flying like 20,000 feet and all of a sudden the engine stopped. one of the engines stopped. and we saw fire coming out of the engine. uh so immediately, they told us we have to do an emergency

landing. we have to brace. they showed us how to brace position. we all said our prayers. >> the plane landed safely and was immediately surrounded by fire crews who sprayed it with foam. one passenger with a history of heart problems was taken to the hospital. everybody else made it off the plane with no injuries. dozens of american ailes flights thrown into chaos last night thanks to a glitch on the on-flight ipads. they crashed. the outage delayed several flights. a recent software update may be to blame. who knew they used ipads? >> everybody is these days right? houston has an ipad story of sorts. hunt is on for a couple of suspects that police say are responsible for robberies. man ripping an ipad out of the hands of a 2-year-old boy. and he takes off. the toddler was actually knocked over during this.

he suffered cuts and bruises. he'll be okay. police believe two men were involved. the same pair linked to at least six other recent cases. turn to this scene. a car is stopped in a breakdown lane and an suv crashes into it. emergency operators had been alerted about an erratic driver. they were able to spot the suv moments before the crash. they warned the tow truck driver who pushed the family back in their car just before impact. >> well mixed martial arts champion jon jones has been stripped of his title and suspended indefinitely. he turned himself in to police after a hit-and-run crash in new mexico that left a pregnant woman with a broken arm. he's facing possible prison time. -- because of misbehavior. the nfl has given up its
