this image, really incredibly striking. a young boy offering an officer in riot gear a bottle of water. abc's jim avila is outside orioles stadium, where they have made a decision to play ball inside an empty stadium today. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, robin. it is a baseball first. the chicago white sox and the baltimore orioles to square off today in day baseball with no fans. the stadium empty. security concerns making it impossible to play baseball in public. baltimore took back its streets overnight. employering numbers. still some protesters refusing to leave. some throwing bricks and bottles at police. authorities firing smoke canisters and pepper balls to disperse the crowd. all this, just 40 miles from the

white house, where the president hosted a state dinner for japan's prime minister. after the president earlier in the day lashed out at those clashing with police. >> that is not a protest. that is not a statement. it's people -- a handful of people taking advantage of a situation for their own purposes. and they need to be treated as criminals. >> reporter: all day long, the community and police worked to calm things down, changing the tone dramatically. peaceful protesters keeping the troublemakers and cops apart. but overnight, more protests erupted across the country. marchers in chicago and in ferguson, a port-a-john lit up on the street, while freddie gray's family calls for calm. >> the rioting won't help the cause. in fact it won't do anything other than distract from the real issue. >> reporter: only handful of arrests on tuesday. baltimore eases back to normalcy

playing day baseball with 35,000 empty seats. public schools reopened today. as well as public buildings. they play baseball here at camden yards with no fans. as baltimore struggles to hold on to the calm. george? >> okay, jim. thank you very much. one of the most powerful images from the riots, that mom who pulled her son out of the chaos. instantly becoming a hero to so many. we're hearing from her this morning. steve osunsami is in baltimore with that. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. take a look behind me. police in riot gear standing guard outside that cvs where the rioting and the looting in the city began. there were many teenagers here, tearing this city to pieces on live television. and many of their parents were at home watching and reacting. >> take that [ bleep ] mask off. >> reporter: it's the mother's outrage seen around the world. >> you want to be out here doing this dumb stuff? >> reporter: toya graham just spotted her son on live television.

throwing rocks at baltimore police. she got down there and knocked the thug right out of him. >> i was angry. i was shocked. you never want to see your child out there doing that. he said, ma, my instinct was to run. he knew. he knew he was in trouble. >> reporter: many parents are calling her their hero. someone who held their child accountable. in middle of riots that burned parts of the city. she told cbs she wasn't trying to become famous. she just wanted her 16-year-old son, michael, off the streets. >> he gave me eye contact. not even thinking about cameras or anything like that, that's my only son. and at the end of the day, i don't want him to be a freddie gray. >> reporter: celebrities online delivering the same message. former super bowl mvp ray lewis -- >> get off the streets! violence is not the answer! >> reporter: dozens of teens are now under arrest. police will arrest more once they identify the faces. toya graham says she hopes her teenage son won't be one of

them. that's why she did what she did. >> i'm just grateful i was able to get him home. i hope he understands what was going on. >> reporter: in the downtown neighborhoods where the rioting started, a community effort continues. volunteers are cleaning up. >> i wept for my city. this morning, i'm cleaning for my city. >> reporter: we're reminded there are real issues. for young black people in this city. high among them is the sense that policing here is unfair. we were told by many that we can't begin to pray for peace until we first pray for justice. robin? >> steve, thank you. we'll have more on baltimore in our 8:00 hour. now to the bad app that grounded dozens of flights. american airlines experiencing major delays because of a problem with pilot ipads. david kerley is at reagan national with the story. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning. you know how you felt when you

left your phone at home or it's not working, that may be the feeling of the american airlines pilots. because their ipads have stopped working. they've become very important. you've seen the pilots in years past lugging around big cases that contain all the maps that they have of the runways that they might land at the airports. around the country. they can download their flight plans onto those ipads. they stopped working last night. for a couple of dozen flights. and people started tweeting. one said the pilot just told us his ipad is broke and navigation app doesn't launch. #seriously? the pilots' ipads can't retrieve the flight plans. a couple of dozen flights, it was all a problem with the application on the ipads. >> a lot of people going, huh, pilots using ipads? what is the airline saying this morning? >> reporter: this is a third party app. the airline says some of the pilots had to bring the planes back to the gates to get a wi-fi connection to download software to fix the app. it was a problem with the outside app. nothing else. no safety concern.

you want the maps before you take off. >> absolutely. david, thank you. >> i want them to have maps. the devastation in nepal. the death toll now topping 5,000. they're hoping to find survivors, like this man pulled from the rubble nearly four days after the quake. terry moran is in nepal with the latest. good morning, terry. >> reporter: it's around 100 hours since the earthquake struck. these rescue efforts are now recovery efforts. at this christian church scores were killed here. there are still extraordinary moments of hope. we witnessed one last night. >> yes. >> reporter: miracles can happen. a young man pulled from the rubble nearly four days after the quake. a heroic rescue team from france and nepal working for hours by flashlight in the utter dark racing against time. and we were there. rescuers are telling us the young man inside is trapped by a large beam that has crushed his leg. they're using this generator to power tools to cut through the beam and free him.

the generator needs gas. the rescuers on edge as the hours go by. >> i hope that we can save his life. >> reporter: you hope you can save his life? >> yeah, we hope. >> reporter: then, there he is. 28-year-old rishi canal, free at last. just after 10:00 p.m. more than 80 hours since the earthquake. after an incredible, all-day effort, this team has brought this young man out of this building. and he's alive. >> you want the light? >> reporter: as medics put him in the ambulance, they ask for the help of our camera light. to insert an iv and rush fluids in him. in the hospital this morning, he says, i kept banging against the rubble and finally someone responded and came to help. he says he was surrounded by the dead, trapped, dehydrated. his nails went white and his lips cracked. he had given up hope until last night. the gift of life. as the recovery efforts get under way here, they need so much. especially in the rural areas

among the poorest in asia. one thing we know about the nepalese, they have an incredible spirit. >> that they do. thank you. now to a plan to take the american embassy in saudi arabia. authorities in the country say 93 people with suspected ties to isis have been arrested in a major roundup. brian ross is here with more. >> reporter: good morning. u.s. and saudi officials this morning are calling it a significant victory, disrupting the attack on the u.s. embassy in the saudi arabian capital city of riyadh. this is what they feared. an attack like the one that took place in 2004 in saudi arabia. five people were killed as the attackers were repelled. the target this time was the u.s. embassy. saudi officials said they arrested dozens of people who attempted to set up an isis cell there. and wage an attack against the u.s. given the importance of saudi

arabia, a successful attack inside the kingdom would have been a major blow. >> thank you, brian. now to the landmark day at the supreme court. same-sex marriage at stake. is it protected by the constitution? the key question. with so much passion boiling over outside the court, the justices weighed the law and history inside their chambers. jon karl was there and he joins us now. good morning, jon. >> reporter: george, you could sense the history in that courtroom. through 2 1/2 hours of probing and sometimes surprising questions from the justices. and one very loud outburst. the arguments about legalizing same-sex marriage could be heard outside the supreme court. >> it's not going to take -- >> do you think -- >> reporter: and inside. one protester dragged out of the court for interrupting the proceedings. >> if you support gay marriage, then you can burn in hell. >> reporter: that prompted this quip.

to gauge where justice kennedy will come down. some of the other justices were hard to read as well. we won't know their decision until the end of the court on june 30th. now to the trial of the man who killed a dozen people inside a colorado movie theater three years ago. the jurors heard frantic 911 calls from that night. wrenching testimony from survivors. clayton sandell has more, joins us from colorado this morning. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning, robin. prosecutors had warned the jury this trial would be like a roller coaster through the worst haunted house they could imagine. that ride is just beginning. for the first time, the jury hearing 911 call that recorded the pure terror in theater 9. >> there are people dead everywhere. one of the guys who came here is dead. oh, my god. which way do we go? >> reporter: somewhere in the chaos, the youngest victim, 6-year-old veronica moser-sullivan there with family friend. kaelin bailey.

>> i was hearing gunshots. and the movie, the movie was still playing. people were screaming. >> reporter: bailey's call to 911 also played in court. >> we need to start chest compressions. i'll walk you through the steps. >> i can't hear. >> ma'am, we need to start cpr. >> reporter: jurors heard from police sergeant michael hawkins. testifying about the moments he tried to save veronica. >> i found an ambulance there. they had the stretcher out. and i laid her on the stretcher. at that point, i realized she had died. >> reporter: when the gunfire finally stopped, katie medley thought her husband caleb was gone, too. >> i knew he had been shot in the head. >> reporter: she was nine months pregnant. >> i grabbed his hand. he squeezed my hand. i told him that i loved him and that i would take care of our baby if he didn't make it. >> reporter: baby hugo was born two days later. his father, critically injured,

into a deadly neighborhood feud. leaving two dead. and this man, 49-year-old desert storm vet william woodward accused of killing them and shooting one other. at a neighborhood labor day party. this video shows him leaving his home. heading to his neighbor's and then -- [ gunfire ] the only survivor taking the stand. in the pretrial hearing. >> that's when i seen billy pointing the gun at me. >> reporter: police saying in documents, woodward was wearing camouflage clothing. crawling to the victims' yards telling them he was on a mission in a war zone. and the three men allegedly called him a plastic g.i. joe that night. woodward's lawyers say he should be protected by florida's stand your ground law. which allows for the right to defend himself and his family. woodward's family claims he has ptsd, telling police his neighbors were tormenting him. >> we had been tormented for months. by these people. they've been tormenting my parents.

making threats against them. they just made our life a living hell. >> reporter: six weeks before the shooting, woodward accused one of his victim's daughters of stealing packages from his door. the feud escalated to calling police and restraining orders. >> he heard the words that caused him, in his own words, to snap. we're going to do it tonight, we're going to put an end to this. >> reporter: and the judge could rule here by the end of the week. if he says woodward can use florida's stand your ground laws, the state can't pursue the murder and attempted murder charges. >> we'll see what happens. thank you. >> now to the brave high school teacher who took down a school shooter. tackling the student. potentially saving lives. neal karlinsky spoke with the hero teacher. >> reporter: it was the beginning of the school day at north thurston high school south of seattle when shots rang out. >> school resource officer has the gun in his possession. >> reporter: students raced out. evacuating in a moment of terror.

>> his facial expression is something i'll never forget. the anger and hatred in his eyes. >> reporter: meanwhile, still inside, teacher brady olson was face to face with a 16-year-old student with a gun. >> i felt i had to protect kids. i felt like i had to protect my friends. >> reporter: he invited abc news for an exclusive one on one in his home overnight. he insists he's no hero. >> i saw a threat. i had to stop it. >> reporter: police say the student was firing a handgun before heading to the cafeteria where he allegedly fired a second shot. . that's when the teacher charged him hard from his left side. >> i was able to tackle the student. i made sure to wrap my arms around him. >> reporter: as he held the student down, rather than yell at him, the popular civics teacher tried to help him. >> when it ceased to be a threat, this young man became pretty human to me. >> reporter: olson lost his wedding ring in the scuffle. something he didn't notice until it was over.

moment. it's not like you can just say, honey, let's stop and talk about this. it was really emotional. so she did something to grab his attention. >> tough love. tough love. she said, no, he's not perfect. but he's my kid. for her to say that. he's my son. i would gather that probably some of the other ones that were out there were like, where's my mom? that when they saw this mother coming, that some of them were probably thinking, boy. >> and teens crave limits. >> they do. >> and they crave boundaries. i'm sure a lot of kids wish their mother had the guts and love to come and extend a hand to save them. >> what is the reality shared with your four kids about things like this? >> the reality is, it's a tough world. my kids are, i have four black daughters. as much as i teach them self-esteem, they have to be aware of who they are. i try to teach them no matter what, it's about extending love and kindness. just showing love. there are situations that happen that we need to inject more love in this world. >> how do you have the

conversation with any child when they see these kind of things? they see the unrest. how do you have a conversation with them about what's going on? >> it's an important teachable moment. you can use this. talk to your children. i think it's important to say, you know, we have reported on yahoo! parenting, you don't want to live in this color blind society. it's important to talk about race and how you can -- and injustice and inequality in the world to shine a light on it. it's the first step we can make in changing and making a difference. >> true. >> good conversation. thank you both very much. up next on our "heat index" the weight loss ad sparking global backlash. it features a model in a bikini with these words, are you beach body ready? so many people are protesting the ad. some of you are showing us how you're "gma" body proud. paula faris is here with more. paula? >> reporter: lara, these ladies out here making quite a statement. we'll get to them in just a moment. that ad is not going over well. some people not just calling for

its removal. they're organizing weekend protests. the goal is for everyone to accept and celebrate that beauty and fitness come in all shapes and sizes. this morning, this bigger than life advertisement for a weight loss shake in the uk featuring a sexy blonde in a yellow string bikini is sparking an even bigger outrage. asking women in big bold letters, are you beach body ready? women calling the ad campaign sexist and body shaming. taking to social media with the viral hashtag each body's ready. this woman, charlotte, is leading the charge. >> i think fitness and health comes in more than one shape and size. and i think that, you know -- you can't kind of insinuate there's only one accepted body shape. because it's just ridiculous. ♪ >> reporter: this backlash is reminiscent of the fire storm after victoria's secret launched the perfect body campaign, starring some of their famous angels. >> the goal is to get them to

change. >> reporter: this morning, the change.org petition has been signed by more than 56,000 people. demanding protein world remove their beach body ad. in london, a protest is in the works. spearheaded by those two bloggers, who posted a photo of themselves in bikinis next to the ad with the caption, we're beach body ready, exactly as we are. this campaign just one of many inspiring women to love their bodies. >> that's something to be celebrated. >> reporter: blogger and mom of three rachel was shocked by the outpouring of support after posting this photo showing her post baby stretch marks front and center. in just an hour, the picture got 1,000 likes. >> we're shifting the perception of what a beautiful woman looks like. >> reporter: and model chrissy teigen getting props after showing off her very real stretch marks and vowing not to photo-shop them away. >> society is taking a turn. women are trying to embrace who

they are the way they are. >> reporter: and that controversial ad is coming down this morning. the company is standing by the campaign and saying it's not coming down because of the backlash. simply because the ad campaign expired. but love your lines. fat is not a failing. all across the globe in the u.s. and australia. i love it. >> we're launching "gma's" brand-new campaign this morning. #gmabodyproud. to celebrate real bodies. we're here with women doing just that. taking a stand for positive body image. they've chosen to show the way real people look. wearing their own suits right here in times square.
