change. at the center of world commerce the international long shore and warehouse union said they can make a difference by leading the protest on may day here in oakland. >> our families are affected by the killings some of our family members and our own locals are victims of police brutality and killings. >> reporter: the union organizer is referring to walter scott, an african-american man shot by police eight times in south carolina. scott has family member whose are long shore union members. >> nobody is this is just business. >> reporter: oakland has been at the front of many protests and this may day, it is no different. here thousands streamed across the bridge during toakland movement. they have scheduled closures delays operations for eight hours. >> we have been in touch with our customers and with harbor truckers so they can plan around this meeting and therefore will minimize the disruption.

>> reporter: the entire city is on high alert for may day with protests beginning as early as 5:30 a.m. police called in for extra patrols to keep order and police. something businesses say is badly needed. dogwood restaurant has been vandalized several times in the past and they're bracing for another less than peaceful protest. >> i think the smashing of property is pointless. i mean, it doesn't get anybody's message across. >> reporter: may day is a day of protests all around the world and the long shoremen have been pushing for justice since 1984. we're learning new details about a shooting in sonoma county we first brought you live at 5:00. police confirm a man was shot at police 3:30 this afternoon no deputies were injured in the incident. police are on scene on fifth street. the man was taken to santa rosa

memorial hospital. authorities have not released his condition or why an officer decided to fire a weapon. some tense and very scary moments today in san francisco's tenderloin district. a man hijacked a car with a 4 month-old baby inside. fortunately it took just four minutes for the police to arrest the man thanks to a cautious bystander. >> well, when you have a child who has been taken it becomes the top priority, and police know they have to act quickly. now, in this case it was good old fashioned police work that got the job done. >> just occurred, with a baby in the back. >> reporter: it happened at 10:40 a.m. here in the tenderloin. this man parked his blue vehicle waiting to pick up his wife. the 4 month-old baby girl was in the back seat. he heard banging on his car. >> the other individual came up and picked up the person.

>> reporter: another person jumped into the car and drove off. hun flagged down police who then radioed the description of the car and license plate number. ten minutes later, sergeant ken lee was driving on the 500 block of brian street looking for the car when he thought he spotted it. the suspicious vehicle was here parked by the door. >> i have the vehicle. >> i only heard partial plate at the time so i was not able to confirm if that was the car or not. but once i exited the driver's side door the other one came out of the door. >> sergeant lee was right on, he said he explained what happened. >> he said he just got in the car and there was a baby in the back. so i handcuffed him, and opened the rear door and saw the baby in the back seat still strapped into the car seat. >> reporter: the baby was reunited with her mom and dad. >> doing our jobs every single

peace officer in this nation would have done the same thing. >> reporter: others would call him a hero the suspect was arrested and sergeant lee did get the last word. listen. >> i have the suspect in custody at 555 seventh street, do you have the baby? >> the baby is fine. >> reporter: and the question of course is why would the suspect park his car in front of the public defender's office. staffers there confirm he is a client of theirs and that is all they would say. but public records show that the suspect was arrested in march on drug-related charges and robbery. and by the way, a public defender did come outside and advise him of his rights when he was arrested today. so maybe that was a good place for him to park. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> great outlook. >> breaking news right now. police from east palo alto menlo park are searching for a gunman near hamilton avenue and

willow road where there is a police command post set up. police believe the man is dangerous and armed. they released few details today but we'll have more as soon as we get updated information. we have more on our website at abc7news.com. the man who confessed to killing a 9-year-old boy made his first appearance in martinez courtroom today. 18-year-old william schultz was staying with his best friend's family last week when he said he decided to kill his best friend's younger brother just to see what it was like. laura martinez has more it must have been very difficult in court today laura. >> reporter: it was dan this hearing lasted just moments but it was clear there was plenty of suffering to go around. obviously for the family of the 9-year-old victim. but also for the parents of the suspect. as he made his first court appearance, 18-year-old william schultz tried to look at his

mother, clearly distraught sitting in a packed courtroom. the charges? first degree murder in the stabbing death of the 9-year-old including the special circumstance of lying in wait. >> he is charged right now with the special circumstance, which make he is on notice at this point in time we are not pursuing this as a death case. >> reporter: in an exclusive jail house interview, schultz admitted to killing the sleeping jordan saying quote, i put my hand over his face and i stabbed him. schultz told the times had he used a weapon like this one, a survival knife that he recently purchased. schultz also told the paper he thought the world was coming to an end and that he killed his best friend's little brother to see what it was like. the public defender said the parents tried to get him

help. >> they express their condolences, it is tragic for both families. >> reporter: while the family makes funeral arrangements, jordan's baseball team plans to honor him at their next game on saturday. laura anthony, abc 7 news. fire damaged a popular pub? san francisco today, a neighbor said it was an accident waiting to happen. the fire appears to have started in the restaurant, the flames shot up into the attic, the building was also damaged. the owner of the building blamed them for the blaze. >> if you went to the roof you saw grease all over the roof, you had a flue full of grease. >> it is an area favored in the marina district for 40 years, no

word on when it opens again. and new frustration for college students who are trying to transfer their credit after the school quickly closed. abc 7 was in concord today where we saw long lines of students. some say they waited for hours and still did not get their transcripts. others were having problems transferring to other schools. >> pretty much if you don't transfer to the school they want you to transfer to you're going to have to pay for your loan. you lose all of your credits and everything. and you're just done starting all over from scratch. >> they are investigating claims and trying to work with other schools. the parent company closed their campuses on monday, blaming state regulators and job placement rates. and shavon mcfeefy is trapped on mt. everest, in nepal, waiting for evacuation.

her case is more urgent than most. most. >> well, you know she is suffering from a condition that hits so many hikers altitude sickness, the only way to resolve it is to get off the mountain. >> reporter: he is trying to get his wife back from nepal she has a bad chest infection. >> they recommend all climbers go down immediately. so we need her down. >> reporter: she and their 11-year-old son were on mt. everest. he returned more than a week ago but she stayed to try to reach the summit. then the earthquake hit. >> she was going across the golden gate bridge. it's the longest ladder bridge that they have. and she said she held on for dear life. >> reporter: he and other families hope to hear soon from the state department on how it

plans to evacuate the 30 americans who were on the mountain. meanwhile, their four children are staying optimistic. >> well they know that she is safe. in a safe spot. but also you know, they want her home. >> reporter: bob dickinson of petaluma called his son from base camp who had been hiking. >> he said hi dad those were the first words, and i was screaming -- and he goes, dad be quiet. he goes i'm on a sat phone i have only got a couple of moments. call my mom tell her i'm okay. >> reporter: dickinson quickly phoned his mother in san francisco who was doing a tv show. how and when spencer will return are not important, they say,

this is abc 7 news. opposition is emerging to the warriors new plan for an arena in san francisco's mission bay neighborhood. it would be built at third and 16th street a coalition of opponents is worried about potential traffic the arena is the right fit for the neighborhood. carolyn tyler has more. >> reporter: hi, ama, the warriors hope to move from oracle arena at this tip-off site in 2018. but suddenly out of the blue, seemingly out of the blue a stumbling block. the warriors original choice on the embarcadero was doomed by opposition. now, their second choice a biion-dollar privately financed 18,000 feet building in mission bay is also being challenged. >> the warriors want everybody to believe the deal is done a slam dunk but the reality is it

is just starting. >> he speaks for what he says is a coalition of stakeholders, and including a former senior vp although the hospital says it is not directly involved. opponents envision traffic blocking access to the three new hospitals in mission bay. but the warriors owner says that 17 nba teams nationwide are within half a mile of hospitals. >> so this is a very common occurrence between brooklyn and staples center and everywhere else. and they all work, we don't believe san francisco is any different in that regard. >> reporter: but opponents say there is nowhere near enough parking, the area is already congested, according to the employees we talked with. >> it is already challenging with the giants on home game. >> practically an everyday basis. >> they reportedly want the arena site for the further ucsf

arrested an oakland man and two teens with a replica gun. and the martinez unified school board voted unanimously to provide air conditioning. one board member took the brunt of the accusations after she said students mainly spanish background are used to living without air conditioning at home. now both elementary schools will get air conditioning installed. however, work will not start until next summer. all right let's move on to the weather. very nice today, not hot but certainly pleasant. >> we're getting it in a couple of day ss warm now, mild, it will be hot in some spots. 60 degrees here in san francisco, 72 in novato, 76 at santa rosa 78 livermore 77 at

los gatos, here is a view of the sky over the bay. the forecast features are theseñr we'll see hot conditions in the next two days, coastal conditions, cooler in all areas since saturday. this will just be a two-day warmup. looking at a little hit of haze over the bay. take a look at air quality projections for the next four days. even with the heat up it will be good air quality. in most locations, just moderate across all the bay area on friday. a seabreeze returning with good air quality in all regions again. here is what is happening a large ridge of high pressure is expanding and setting up a warm pattern that we'll have for the next couple of days. starting 11:00 tonight, breezy conditions on the coast, winds generally in an onshore direction, but during the next 12 hours into about 11:00 a.m. tomorrow we'll see a shift in

the offshore pattern with a warmup coming our way quite significant, tomorrow, expecting highs on the coast in the low-to-mid 70s low-to-mid 80s in the bay and lower 90s in many inland locations, much warmer inland. now on friday a light seabreeze develops, starting to cool down on the coast low 90s inland on friday. and saturday a stronger more far-reaching seabreeze will cool down on areas and we'll see if the inland areas are cooling and moderating. temperatures in the low 50s, mild, overnight period tomorrow in the south bay we'll see highs rising up into the upper 80s in many locations. mid-80s on the peninsula, low-to-mid 70s on the coast, downtown san francisco bouncing up to 76 degrees, north bay, highs in the lows on the coast, upper 80s to 90s inland, from santa rosa to napa east bay highs, inland quite warm with highs reaching to the upper 80s,

cupertino's cement plant has reached a multi-million dollar settlement. there was accusations of waste water dumped into the creek. as part of the settlement the company will install a $5 million water treatment system and pay a $2.5 million fine. it will also be subject to constant monitoring. >> if the company violates any part of that we can actually seek contempt of court. it's an order the judge enters it as an order. >> this facility has been operating for 80 years here, and for 80 years they have been using this creek as their own personal sewer. and this is a great day. >> in a statement hansen says we are pleased to resolve these

and we want to update that breaking news in menlo park, we brought you just moments ago the east palo alto police are searching for a presumed gunman they say is dangerous. authorities have set up a command post and have set up special armored vehicles in their search for the man, gathering in a parking lot near hamilton and willow road. our breaking news continues on twitter and our website at abc7news.com. and shares of san francisco based twitter falling sharply this week down more than 25% in the past two days. tonight, abc 7 news reporter jonathan bloom talks to experts about why the companies missed the mark and what it means for investors. >> reporter: in the year and a half since it went public

twitter had its highs and lows in fact this is only the third worst drop in the stock's history and it's a big one. some say it started with a tweet. >> they published twitter's earnings before trading which is very irregular, the numbers dropped quickly, about 18 to 20%. >> and they kept going, the numbers were disappointing, twitter is growing but not as fast as predicted. >> investors thought twitter would have the high revenue number and more users and it did not deliver. you can't do that when you're at $25 billion and still not gap profitable. >> like facebook, twitter makes money by selling ads but he says they're different. >> this tells you where you live how old you are what you like to do. twitter is anonymous. >> if you look more broadly you will find twitter is not alone with other stocks taking a beating, including one company

right around the corner. >> yelp is the same problem, lost money. >> yelp and twitter had one thing in common, both missing their targeted earnings and the markets punished them. the ratio of stock price to sales is the highest it has been since before the '70s. >> at these multiples, our research points to a correction within the next 12 months. >> that would mean a market drop of 20 to 25%, for some it is already happening. >> alibaba is below what the ipo price was last year, twitter is below, you're now in the red for the big stockholders in the san francisco bay area. >> jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. and there is another local tech company in the spotlight tonight. according to bloomberg news, sales force has hired advisers to fend off a possible takeover bid. they didn't say who expressed interest but the former

executive of oracle has a company formerly valued at $50 billion, making it the largest takeover ever. sales continued to climb after hours and rose 4%. we have dramatic video to show you the disaster in nepal. it shows the moment the 7.8 quake struck near kathmandu you can see the area has many people and cars we're told the shaking lasted for about 60 seconds. and as the shaking got worse this happened. check that out right by your screen right there. the building crashed into the street missing a man pushing a cart by just meters. he survived but the death toll in nepal is now more than 5100. a moment of joy in the middle of the disaster, rescue crews pulled a 4 month-old baby boy underneath the rubble found underneath the collapsed building 22 hours after the

quake. we don't know what happened to see parents but he was rescued by the nepalese army the initial report shows no signs of internal injuries for him. and the governor ramping up with an executive order today setting a new target cut emissions by 70% below 1990 levels in the next 15 years.=x5 i have set a very high bar he says but it's a bar we must meet. a bay area group says it is meaningless if the state doesn't invest in new mass transit projects and abusive delays in the energy projects. and we're talking about resources, when actor william shatner proposed a pipeline to bring water it got a lot of attention but not much traction. today, there is talk about the idea. >> reporter: the william shatner

proposal on yahoo! was seemingly simple although the idea of building a pipeline to bring washington's water to california was immediately rejected by officials in both states it certainly stimulated debate in this crippling fourth year of debate. >> you have a problem, i think i have a solution. >> reporter: shortly after the idea broke a partner in a french firm called our attention to a project his company is negotiating with in chile to build what they call a submarine river of flexible tubing, sunk along a wet area to the north. the same concept could work here, said the scientist, by taking money by the rivers and delivering to cities farther down the california coast. >> yes, you can use this water. and by definition because you are at the mouth of the river all the users up stream could see this. >> this is not the most crazy

idea i have heard by any means. >> reporter: the head of uc davis what that is studied water issues, has glanced at the french proposal but is looking at the merits. >> every proposal that sounds good usually has a hidden flaw to it. >> reporter: in 1975, the bureau considered a similar program to harvest the water and send the through pipes. it was ultimately dismissed. but the french source says that in the past 40 years, water in the pipeline could be delivered for half the cost of the new plant in san diego county new this. >> this is the kind of debate that california should look at. >> reporter: they received multiple proposals from the public and is reviewing them all. in sacramento george warren, abc 7 news. and just ahead here tonight.

crowd funding is becoming the most popular way for ordinary folks to raise money for a good cause. and millions of donors are handing over a lot of money. >> yeah, but what happens to your money after you donate it? abc 7's michael finney has more. >> they call it the wild west crowds are largely policing themselves or not policing themselves. we followed the money in a campaign for the victims of the fire. and it reveals the amazing power of on-line funding. >> reporter: this massive fire on mission street left 40 people homeless in january. >> a go fund me campaign. >> reporter: that is abc 7 news encouraging you to donate to a crowd-funding campaign for residents who lost everything. >> i expected to maybe if i was lucky, to raise a few,000 dollars. >> reporter: zach crocker is a local blogger who happened by on his bike, he got upset that they

were funding instead of helping so he started the go fund me drive. so his surprise the donations poured in. and suddenly he had $180,000. >> it blew my mind i guess i never realized the power of on-line fundraising. >> reporter: he also didn't realize the responsibility. potential donors peppered him with questions. >> i had people e-mailing me asking me for my credentials, who am i? what am i doing? why am i doing this? at a certain point it got so overwhelming, that i realized look, these concerns are totally valid. >> on-line funding platforms are so new that there is no mediateor or body looking at what actually goes on. >> reporter: the consumer reports shows that there is no over sight of what is going on. an estimated $16 billion was raised last year and that is expected to double to $35

billion next year. donors also may not realize the sites make a profit off their gifts. go fund me takes 5% of each donation, its payment processer takes 2.9%. together, they took $16,000 of the donations intended for the victims of that mission street fire. the company tells us those fees keep the platform running. >> but these are a tremendous disappointment. >> reporter: gabriel medina works for the mission economic development agency, which department manages donations. >> how do we make sure that families with more children are treated fairly or single mothers, the elderly, there is no rule. >> reporter: they had to decide how to clearly distribute $165,000. a couple of con artists did try to claim they lived in the building. but in the end, zach handed out checks ranging from six to $15,000 to 40 victims.

>> god bless them. >> yeah. to help. >> reporter: like eugeneia and humberto lopez who used their earnings for furniture as they bunked temporarily. zach says he hopes it was fair but would not mind some way to be sure. >> there should be a discussion about the vetting process that some of these sites use to make sure people are not taking advantage of this amazing new technology. >> reporter: people in other states have taken advantage and have even been arrested for fraud. however, those cases are rare and a far cry from the honest work of campaigns like zachs. now tonight on abc 7 news at 11:00, why these bay area youngsters and their parents are not pleased with the team photos they paid for. what do you you want? >> i want him to be stopped. he is still doing this to people. >> tonight, i go looking for the photographer these parents say
