across the country in honor of may day known as international workers day. demonstrations expected to disrupt several bay area cities. amy hollyfield is live with more on the story. amy? >> reporter: hi, eric. expected to get started here, a triangle, telegraph and broadway in oakland. no one is here yet they're expected to start to gather in a half hour. here is what you need to the first bit of action at 5:30 at lathem square. at 7:30 expected to gather at mcarthur park hope is to block commuters there, keep them from leaving that station. at 9:00 expect to see protesters at the port of oakland. a busy day. noon they expect to be at city

hall in oakland and they conclude 7:00 tonight with another march at lathem square. we have video in the past what a protest may look like in the area. these are scheduled to go on across the country. it is a tradition historically for labor and immigrant rights. this year, they say they'll be addressing the issue of police brutality. we will cover these for you. stay with us. before you leave the house check in. we will let you know how the situation looks and how you need to adjust your day. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. happening today, san francisco minimum wage goes up to $12.25 an hour. the increase means they join oakland as having the highest legally mandated pay for nonsalary workers. minimum wage increase was approved by voters as part of initiative that will increase minimum wage to $15 in 2018. california minimum wage was increased to $9 an hour in july.

the humanitarian chief is in nepal for a visit to meet victims and local leaders after that earthquake hit the region. the u.n. humanitarian office says 24,000 people are living in 13 camps in katmandu. more than 133,000 homes have been destroyed, and death toll stands at more than 6,000. san francisco firm sent drones to nepal to help in earthquake relief. sky catch plans to provide mapping images to assess damage and allocate resources to two researchers have been sent to katmandu. there are operations done in collaboration with link in for good and unesco. so many people want to support relief and recovery efforts in nepal. text to 90999, contribute $10 or

high of 88 possibly 95 yesterday. today will be around that 88 degree mark once again. let's look at what's going to happen as far as what we dealt with yesterday compared to today. look at that. we surged 24 degrees in richmond, half moon bay, from wednesday to thursday. the rest of us around 16 to 18. we had the 80s and 90s instead of 60s and 70s. now have light and variable winds on the doppler. it is pretty stuffy. you notice a difference when you step outside. looking from east bay hills camera, the air is clear. the coast will see the biggest cooling today. cooling spreading through most neighborhoods tonight. fingers crossed you get better sleep. morning clouds cooler highs coming through the rest of the forecast. here are a couple areas of high pressure we have been tracking. this one moves east, southerly

in force today to participate in may day. the first local protest expected to begin in a few minutes near city hall in oakland. more rallies planned for santa fe and san francisco later today. >> number two, department of justice announced a $20 million pilot program to provide police officers with body cameras. the first money goes to buy 50,000 body cams for officers in the next three years. >> number three, the baby-sitter that took video of the tiger that escaped from her enclosure at the oklahoma city zoo says she never felt in danger. she was baby-sitting a five-year-old when the zoo went into lockdown. officials say lola never made it to public area. >> number four, minimum wage workers get a raise today. it is going up to $12.25 an hour, same as oakland. it will eventually go up to $15 an hour in san francisco by 2018. >> number five, warriors practice trying to stay fresh for the game sunday with the

amy? >> reporter: the plan was to start at 5:30. no one here yesterday. i guess they're not early risers. said they would protest in downtown oakland, a block or two from city hall at 5:30. no one here yet. we are here to keep you posted. a glimpse of today today. at 7:30 protesters plan to be at macarthur park. they want to block google buses that launch from there, keep them from getting started at noon, they plan to be at city hall for a rally in oakland with lots of speakers. they plan to be there for

specifically police shooting death of walter scott, an unarmed black man killed in a traffic stop in south carolina. scott had family members that were long shore men. >> may day protests in other bay area cities as well, in san francisco there's a festival at civic center plaza at 1:30 followed by a march on mission street at 3:30. in san jose a rally at target plaza and king road, followed by a march and rally at city hall. events also held in chicago philadelphia, and new york. atlanta police say officers were forced to shoot and kill a woman who apparently slipped out of handcuffs began to shoot at them. happened yesterday afternoon, outside a police precinct building. they say she was arrested for driving a vehicle reported stolen. it is unclear if officers searched her for weapons before putting her in back of a squad car. witnesses say she was handcuffed. the woman taken to the hospital where she died.

officers weren't injured. warriors fever hits a high in the area. backers of the arena plan fight back against powerful critics. matt keller is live at the arena site. >> reporter: the warriors may be more popular than ever but there's one opposition group speaking out about the proposed arena in mission bay. jack davis member of mission bay davis says the arena doesn't belong near the medical center. the plan doesn't include enough parking, traffic would be a major issue, especially around the hospital. many at last night's meeting were in favor of the arena, including the merchant's association. mission bay alliance promises a fight. >> corny atmosphere

we are seeing more stories of survival from saturday's 7.8 magnitude earthquake today. a young woman rescued from rubble near katmandu bus terminal. this is new video taken of debris in the area. hours before the woman's rescue a 15-year-old was pulled from wreckage of a seven story building. more than 6,000 people di the quake. >> stay down. >> this video captures the moment an avalanche on mount everest struck. they were hiking below base camp. they were running and shouting as snow and ice swal owes them. no one in this group was seriously injured. they arrived in

1-800-red cross. construction worker is accusing apple of discrimination. he says he lost his job because of a 2008 felony conviction. according to chronicle, he says he was working on the space ship headquarters in cupertino when he lost his job in january. he was told because he had a felony conviction in the past seven years. he filed a complaint with the equal opportunity commission. the controversy began when apple first accused of barring felons from construction jobs. someone impersonating a police officer is trying to get people to pay made up fines. residents who returned calls were told to buy $2,000 of prepaid credit cards, then transmit financial information over the phone. police say officers do not solicit residents by phone.

delays. heading farther north, onto 80 clear in the sfo. brisbane into san francisco a quiet drive. only ten minutes to get up to the sky way. don't be surprised if traffic signs on interstate 80 look different over the next few weeks. >> new electronic display boards are being tested for smart corridor project on 80 between richmond and emeryville. new signs give drivers more advanced notice of conditions. they will change warning drivers of blocked lanes, reduced speeds. they hope it will reduce the number of accidents. signs are going live later this year. 5:21. next a driver gets a ticket for talking on a cell phone but he says he wasn't. how he turned the tables on police. and a couple caught on video walking off with a $5500 painting. why police are not calling them thieves.

5:44. a union city man is fighting back after getting a $300 traffic ticket even though he wasn't doing anything wrong. travis nunes says they mistook his hands for a cell phone. despite his explanation, he got a ticket. he recorded a video of him driving with his fingers resting over his face. he was pulled over by the cop. >> in the first situation it was a different set of circumstances in which i presume it will go to court and at that point, you know, and they'll make a decision. >> give me a $300 ticket, you better make sure you're certain i'm guilty. >> police say they believe he was using the phone when driving when served the ticket but add the second time around was an honest mistake. nunes plans to contest

court. a san francisco artist pleading to get a prized painting back after someone took it from outside his garage. this is a foelt oh of the painting worth about $5500. surveillance video shows a couple walking off with the painting from the house in north beach earlier this month. police are not calling this a theft. they told abc 7 it doesn't look like they're trying to steal the painting, perhaps they thought maybe somebody was throwing it out or giving it away. the artist says that's how he makes his money, would like it back. if you know where that painting is, contact the police. warriors are getting ready for sunday's playoff game against the memphis grizzlies. >> the slash brothers against the smash brothers. the grizzlies are big and physical. they split games this year each winning on home floor. game one sunday, 12:30 p.m., on abc 7, followed by after the game. join sports director larry beil and sports reporter mike shuman with post game reaction.
