to the people of baltimore and the demonstrators across america, i heard your call for no justice, no peace. your peace is sincerely needed. >> a heavy security presence is in place right now in baltimore after the state attorney announced six officers have been charged criminally in the death of freddie gray. he was a young black man who died while in police custody.

>> and here in the bay area demonstrations are just now getting underway on social injustice issues and labor issues. right now take a look from sky 7 hd. you can see hundreds and hundreds of marchers are walking through the streets at tenth and mandela parkway in oakland right now. everything is peaceful. we notice that there is a police presence there. you can see the officers out in front. we're going to come back to this in just a few minutes. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm sheryl jennings. >> 25-year-old gray was chased down and arrested by police april 12th. an investigation revealed he died from a critical neck injury. abc 7 news reporter alyssa harington joins us live with the latest developments. >> reporter: five of the six officers are in custody. they're facing a variety of charges including manslaughter and false imprisonment. the most serious charge second-degree depraved hard murder filed against the driver of the police van. >> we have probable cause to file criminal charges. >> reporter: cheers erupted as

maryland state attorney marilyn mosby released bombshell findings in the case of freddie gray announcing criminal charges against six officers. the 25-year-old man died in the custody of baltimore police. his death has been ruled a homicide. gray was taken into custody april 12th after he made eye contact with police and ran. mosby says they found a legal knife on him not a switchblade like reported. and there was no probable cause to make an arrest. gray suffered fatal injuries while being transported. mosby says he requested a medic but not one of the officers called for help. >> mr. gray suffered a severe and critical neck injury as a result of being handcuffed, shackled by his feet and unrestrained inside of the bpd wagon. >> reporter: police in riot gear and national guard now line the streets in baltimore preparing for expected demonstrations. emotions already at a boiling point.

>> look at you. is this what it's coming to man? >> reporter: but mosby is calling for peace while her office seeks justice. >> to the youth of this city, i will seek justice on your behalf. this is a moment this is your moment. let's ensure that we have peaceful and productive rallies that will develop structural and systemic changes for generations to come. you're at the forefront of this cause. and as young people our time is now. >> reporter: the police union in baltimore released an open letter, part of it reads, not one of the officers involved in this tragic situation left home in the morning with the anticipation that someone with whom they interacted would not go home that night. the union says the officers are not responsible for freddie gray's death. live in the newsroom, alyssa

harrington, abc 7 news. >> a lot of people of course are talking about marilyn mosby after today's news conference. the 35-year-old took office just four months ago. mosby comes from a family of law enforcement. her father, mother and grandfather were all officers. she's married to the city councilman who represents the neighborhood in which gray died. mosby said today that is not a conflict of interest and she would uphold the law in every neighborhood. >> president obama reacted to today's developments saying it was absolutely vital the truth about what happened to freddie gray comes out. >> i think the people of baltimore want more than anything else is the truth. that's what people around the country expect. and to the extent that it's appropriate, this administration will help local officials. >> the person said the officers responsible must receive due process. >> the gray reaction comes on this day of protest known as may

day. traditionally the demonstrations are over economic equality workers rights and social justice. now you saw the big march in oakland taking place right now. abc 7 news reporter amy homefield joins us live from the port of oakland. >> reporter: hi, chris. they rallied here this morning. now they're on the move. take a look at that sky 7 hd live picture from up above. they're currently marching on 10th in downtown oakland. they're headed to city hall. it's a large group. it's a peaceful and focused group. may day protests historically are known to focus on labor issues and immigrants. union workers did make up the crowd of protesters at the port of oakland this morning but they focused on a modern day issue, relations between police and people of color. >> the goal essentially here is to affirm humanity of black people oppressed people throughout america. we're here for no other reason. >> reporter: the protests at the mcarthur b.a.r.t. station also

had a modern day twist. this group is angry at high-tech companies and plan to block the tech commuter buses. >> tech companies are coming to the bay area and -- these neighborhoods of people that have been long-time residents that are being displaced because somebody with more money can pay more rent. >> reporter: this protest was well publicized. so the tech buses did not stop here. a.c. transit buses also bypassed this station. activists admitted they used facebook to get the word out about their anti-facebook action and are also using the social site to monitor their message. >> i think it spreads awareness. i think that if you go on to the facebook page there is a dialogue happening with people who work for these tech giants. >> reporter: police also got word of the planned activity. oakland police showed up in large numbers. and even asked chp for backup. but they weren't needed. the groups out this morning were

peaceful. >> we're here to make a demonstration. >> reporter: today there have been no arrests no problems reported. b.a.r.t. commuters were not impacted, now, operations were shut down this morning here at the port but that was pre-planned and cleared with the port. labor took their monthly thursday night meeting and moved it to now and turned it into a protest. amy holyfield nbc news. there are other may day protests in the bay area today. in san francisco a festival at civic center plaza takes place at 1:30 followed by a march to 24th and mission streets. in san jose a rally gets underway at 2:00 this afternoon at story and king road. that will be followed by a march and rally at city hall. and we'll have continuing coverage of today's may day event and let you know how it is affecting traffic where you live. please follow us on twitter twitter @abc7newsbayarea. in other news 18 people are being kept out of their homes this morning after a three-alarm

apartment fire in san mateo. several pets were killed but all the people escaped unharmed. abc 7 news reporter matt keller has more from san mateo. >> reporter: after the flames are out the devastation sets in for fire victims. a charred mess shows a financial loss at the apartment complex in san mateo. what you can't see, the devastation from the loss of memories and their pets. >> she had like 30 birds. she had two love birds, a parakeet fishes she kept them real clean. she loved her animals. that was her hobby. and it's all gone. >> reporter: cell phone video from a neighbor shows just how intense the flames were at around 5:15 this morning. firefighters called for three alarms. they overwhelmed the flames with water and kept it from spreading to the six other units. >> really extended to the fire fighting crews and the quicker we can get water on the fire. >> reporter: a couple and their

5-year-old granddaughter initially told firefighters a smoke alarm woke them up. both adults complain smoke irritation and eye irritation. the man taken to the hospital, the woman evaluated at the scene. >> she ain't here. had her looked at. >> reporter: all of the victims are expected to recover. after all this loss it's something that helps them move forward. >> it's all gone. everything is gone. i mean, everybody made it out okay. that's all that matters right? >> reporter: firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire. the people who live in the adjacent apartments will be let back into their homes once the power and gas are turned back on. in san mateo, matt keller, abc 7 news. relief in nepal. and bad food in the cafeteria how years old meat was served to students. look at this picture from sfo. look what's lurking on the left side of the screen. it's the marine layer. it's already back in places like half-moon bay. already 25 degrees cooler than

bennie king best known for his classic "stand by me" has died at the age of 76. that song was used as a theme for a movie with the same name. details of king's death have not been released. bennie king is survived by his wife of more than 50 years. and now to the search for survivors in that devastating earthquake in nepal. this morning the death toll is still climbing. at least 6,000 people are now confirmed dead. officials say there is very little time to find anybody who was still alive in the rubble. nepal is renewing its appeal to international donors to send aid. it needs 400,000 tents for temporary shelter along with grain, salt and sugar. seriously injured. >> and turned into a powerful tool, it's been activated for two days and in that time more than half a million people donated and raised more than $10 million in funds for the international medical corps. and so many people want to support relief and recovery efforts in nepal. if you'd like to donate you can text nepal to 90999 to contribute $10 or call 1-800-red-cross. new food handling procedures are in place at an east tennessee school district after 6-year-old meat was served to students at lunch. a parent got a photo from a concerned cafeteria cook who noticed the frozen pork was actually dated 2009. yeah, that cook was told by a manager to cover it with gravy to give it a better taste. kids at 18 schools were served the old pork. >> only meal they get all day long and it just very upsets me that these kids is going to school to get that meal. >> luckily none of the kids

around downtown, financial district 64 belmont 63 richmond 65. we're definitely seeing the effect in those areas from the sea breeze. but elsewhere already off to 83 in heelsburg 86 in walnut creek and 80 in saratoga. 24-hour temperature change inland pretty much warmer as we expected along the coast and now moving into the north bay some of those lower valleys that cold air is funneling in. and that's why you're significantly cooler. look at that 23 degrees cooler in half-moon bay right now. yesterday was a picture perfect day. if you like gray it's a great picture day because that's all you're going to get. temperatures this friday are going to fall three degrees in san jose 11 at oakland, 12 in petaluma, 25 at half-moon bay. in fact we've already set our high in san francisco and half-moon bay and our temperatures will continue to fall just a little bit during the afternoon hours. there you go. you can see the clouds coming across the golden gate and heading over towards richmond

and emeryville right now. cooler at the coast. cooler everywhere tonight. clouds will spread everywhere this weekend due to the high pulling away and the southerly surge coming in on the backside of it. let's take a look at your temperatures down in the south bay. we're going to be in the mid to upper 80s. on the peninsula quite a spread from the mid-80s possibly to the mid-70s by the time we get to milbray. north bay falling into the mid-70s this afternoon. same thing along the east bay until you get down to castro valley and fremont. mid-80s to mid-90s inland and east bay. you'll see the biggest drop in temperatures tomorrow. accuweather seven-day forecast 70s by monday. we'll keep falling by the weekend into next week. yesterday the angels played over the a's it was like 86 degrees. >> miserable. >> today they play the giants it will be 60 degrees. >> oh. >> big difference. >> thank you so much. >> what a difference a day makes. you ready for this? the fight of the century
