broadcast center. this is abc 7 news. good afternoon everybody. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm ama daetz. first at 4:00, sky 7 hd was over story and king roads in san jose where people are gathering now to protest for workers rights. this is one of big may day demonstrations in the bay area. organizers say they want to bring attention to the struggle of the middle class, the affordable housing crisis and pay reform. they plan to march from the shopping center to city hall and expect traffic delays in that area. >> similar protests are taking place across the bay area and we'll have live team coverage. laura anthony is in oakland. we begin with abc 7 news

reporter wayne freedman who is live in san francisco. >> good afternoon ama. just moments ago they were here at civic center plaza. they are now marching in san francisco. let's show you what it looked like here a short time ago. they were loud. they were purposeful. >> is may day a holiday? >> in san francisco and within the immigrant community it's a holiday. >> hence the festivities in the civic plaza today, many of these people immigrant workers. all of them were celebrating a raise in san francisco's minimum wage $11:.05 to $15. >> it's a step in the right direction. >> tell that to anyone working for minimum wage in this city that sees everything else going up including rents. >> very hard. i have -- i used to have two jobs and my husband also has two jobs. >> and jessica garcia has a small child as well.

she makes salad on bush street in san francisco. a small business that is hiring though on the other side of this issue, owner julian chang says he'd love to hire even more people. he's an immigrant from france and says in the state where the minh yum wage minimum wage $9 $12.25 is steep. >> it's hard. >> hard to make ends meet and hard to provide the jobs that make the ends meet and the world go around. >> we have to do it. we have a little one. >> my children didn't know what was going to happen. >> reporter: there are wages measured an hour at a time and all about the next generation especially on may day. >> reporter: and there you see them and now you don't. that was just a few moments ago. 15 minutes they took off and the next destination 24th and mission in san francisco trailed by police. a very peaceful demonstration thus far and we're going to pack up and follow them. we'll see you in an hour. live in san francisco at civic

center plaza wayne freedman, abc 7 news. sky 7 hd shows the may day march in oakland and these pictures are from when demonstrators left the port and marched through downtown oakland and that's where laura anthony continues our live team coverage. laura? >> hi larry. they did effectively shut down the port this morning and then they did march from the port here to city hall. this is where the march ended. there was a rally about two hours' long and then everyone dispersed. everything today was completely peaceful. the hope is it stays that way tonight. [ cheering ] >> reporter: demonstrators began gathering early at the port of oakland for may day activity and a day that's traditionally about labor, but has morphed into something larger than that. >> the goal essentially herefá is to form the humanity of black people, brown people and oppressed people throughout america.

♪ ♪ >> reporter: after the port rally several hundred people took to the streets marching first through west oakland picking up supporters along the way. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: organized by labor, hundreds of signs reveal a broad mix of community concern. >> working care people care deeply about what happens and they're being mistreated. >> police brutality, we're losing our lives to the people who are supposed to protect and serve. >> police were on hand to escort marchers and reported no incidents. i wish that we can just stay peaceful. i don't want us breaking windows and destroying our own community because that solves nothing. >> more events are scheduled for this evening in downtown oakland. >> one of those is set to begin at 7:00 downtown.

the other here at 8:00 at city hall. police do not expect any problem, but they tell us they will have extra staffing on hand to handle any potential problems. laura anthony, abc 7 news. now to baltimore where the family of of freddie gray is reacting to the decision to charge six police officers in his death. >> gray died while in police custody and the charges come after a police investigation. abc news reporter marcy gonzalez is live. the family says this is just the first step in seeking justice. >> reporter: yes larry and ama they call this a momentous day, ranging from false imprisonment to second-degree murder. hundreds of protesters marched from baltimore city hall to the jail where those officers are now being held. >> reporter: celebrations in the streets of baltimore. >> today is a momentous step on the road to justice for freddie.

>> reporter: reacting to today's announcement from the state's attorney. >> the findings of our comprehensive, thorough and independent investigation coupled with the medical examiner's determination that mr. gray's death was a homicide has led us to believe that we have probable cause to file criminal charges. >> criminal charges filed against all six officers involved in freddie gray's april 12th arrest. the most serious charge second-degree murder filed by officer caesar goodson where gray suffered that deadly spinal cord injury. the indictment saying gray should not have been arrested in the first place and once he was officers never put a seat belt on him and later ignored his repeated pleas for medical help. >> i was sickened and heart broken by the statement of charges that we heard today because no one in our city is above the law. >> the police union calls the

prosecutor's findings a rush to judgment. >> no officer injured mr. gray, caused harm to mr. gray and they are truly saddened by his death. these officers did nothing wrong. >> president obama praised the peaceful calls for accountability leading up to this significant step. >> that's what people around the country expect. >> instead of justno justice no peace, it's the beginning of justice. >> the mayor says she has ordered the police commission tore suspend them all. >> live in baltimore, marcy gonzalez, abc 7 news. maryland made quite an impression during today's news conference. she has social media abuzz with one person saying camilla harris and marilyn mosby she is 35 years old and just took office four months ago and comes from a

family of law enforcement. her mother father and grandfather were all police officers. this is her right here with her mom about 25 years ago. she has two daughters and is married to the city councilman who represents the neighborhood where freddie gray was arrested. mosby said today that is not a conflict of interest. she says it's her duty to uphold the law in every neighborhood. police departments across the country will get help to keep an eye on their officers as well as the suspects they're arresting thanks to the department of justice. this morning it launched a $20 million program to help police departments big and small purchase 50,000 body cameras. the american civil liberties union and privacy attorneys have expressed some concern for officers wearing those cameras as well as people being recorded by police. some of the money will be spent on studying the effectiveness of these cameras. >> turning now to our weather. the weekend is finally upon us. >> yes. it is here and so is spencer

christian. >> let's start with live doppler 7 hd and we have mainly clear skies right now over the inland areas and there's fog at the coast and check out the 24-hour temperature change and this fog has had a significant cooling effect and it's 18 degrees cooler at half moon bay than it was at this hour and 22 degrees cooler in san francisco and 20 degrees cooler at palo alto and all areas have been cooled down by the advancing marine layer and here's a view live from the emoriville camera and looking at low clouds and fog that have drifted across the bay and it is currently 59 degrees in san francisco and it just went down a degree and 79 in san carlos and 78 in san jose and 87 in morgan hill and 55 in half moon bay and here is the view showing mostly clear skies and over the bay and low clouds and fog are drifting in at 73 and 79 in petaluma and as we look at the view from our east bay hills camera and that coming across the bay and we'll see fog near

h covering santa clara, san francisco, east bay and all the bay area this is abc 7 news. developing news how the of hawaii this afternoon an oakland-bound plane was forced to make an emergency airlines. flight 24 had to return to the maui airport just before 3:00 our time because of abn odor or fumes in the cabin. the crew members helped evacuate

all 234 passengers using the plane's emergency slide and there are no reports of serious injuries. a story of survival out of nepal seven days after the deadly earthquake there. u.s. officials say nine people were rescued and seven of them american in the city four hours of kathmandu. details under which conditions they were rescued have not been released yet. the death toll now stands at 6:0000 and today the european union announced that mostly a thousand of its citizens remain unaccounted for and hope is dwindling to find anyone who may still be alive in the rubble. and no one was injured in this incident. >> the founder of an organization that has been helping nepalese youth for decades just returned from the quake-devastated country. olga murray is back to celebrate her 90th birthday. she lives half the year in nepal where she started the nepal youth foundation and a group that provides vocational training and nutrition programs but her staff is switching gears and it's using its money to help hospitals buy medical equipment. >> there are so many broken limbs and this particular machine can diagnose a broken limb very quickly and it's portable and we desperately need it. just go out and buy it. $30,000. it is now using its facilities to help people injured by the quake. it needs money to buy more tents and medical supplies. >> you can find a link to abc 7 news.com. facebook users are coming to the aid of victims in nepal in a big way.

users responded and mark zuck areberg says more than $10 million has been donated. the company will donate an additional $2 million topping the aid package pledged by the u.s. government. so many people want to support recovery forts. text nepal to 908999 to contribute $10 or call 1-800-red cross. safety at sea word under the microscope. the san diego park was citesed for not properly protecting its killer whale trainers. the violation showed a fundamental misunderstanding of what's needed to care for orcas. it is accused of not properly training its employees and they've been heavily scrutinized since an animal trainer was killed by an orca in its orlando park. >> abc 7 is the place to watch the warriors take on the grizzlies this sunday of game one of the western conference semifinals.

and as you can see here, it's been at the coast for a while now coming up from our south and here's a look at our highs so far and things have cooled down sharply since yesterday and 59 degrees and half moon bay and downtown san francisco where yesterday we had a high of 84 and 70 degrees at oak larpd so far and warm to hot in some of the inland locations and and yok and off we go and the live view of the golden gate bridge where the fog is moving through the golden gate toward east bay right now and even in some places beyond the east bay and we'll see cooler conditions and the seasonal pattern a steady one will settle in for next week. we're looking at a cloud pattern and it doesn't have the sea breeze as we continue the animation overnight and, of

course that will continue the morning. so lows in the 50s ands and lower 70 'avrn the bay and it will be cooler with it reaching the 70s at the most part and we'll see it in clover dale. overnight with the local fog pushing locally inland and low temperatures will be generally in the low 50s and tomorrow we'll see mainly sunny skies over the bay and inland. there will be patches of fog near the coast tomorrow. highs will reach into the upper 50s and most coastal areas we'll see low to mid 70s and 63 in san francisco and mainly upper 70s inland although the east bay will reach into the low to mid 80s in places likeçó liver more and avent rock. ? high temperature in lant,

roberts sits down with taya kyle. american sniper made this domestic rated war hero a household name known as the most lethal sniper in u.s. military history, kyle was killed two years ago on a texas shooting range by a former marine and his murder trial took center stage and eddie ray routh was convicted and sentenced to life in prifshson. the hate and anger have subsided and the book is meant to put a face on veterans families and to ensure that her husband's work and life are not forgotten. >> she allowed us to view and to share with everybody tonight home videos and it was our first time seeing chris kyle and i'm watching this video, so tender. he's a big, big muscular guy and the way he's reading a bedtime story to his son bubba.

sky 7 hd was over oakland today and you can see hundreds of people there who are marching. protests are expected to continue throughout the afternoon and into the evening. in san jose the may day gathering has been the largest in the bay area in recent years. abc 7 news reporter david louie tweeted this picture of ash carl talking about fair pay and policing and david will have a live report on abc 7 news at 5:00. a daley city family has been waiting and waiting and waiting almost seven years for a murder case to go to trial. abc 7 reporter vic lee tweeted this photo of a mother and her family who were waiting for the sentencing of the killer. 18 people are kept out of their homes today after a three-alarm apartment fire in san mateo. several pets were killed and all of the people who were in that building were able to escape unharmed. abc 7 news reporter matt keller with more now from san mateo. >> after the flames are out and the devastation sets in for fire

victims and a charred mess shows a financial loss at the via del prado apartment complex in san mateo. what you can't see the devastation from the loss of memories and their pets. >> she had, like 30 birds and two lovebirds and parakeet and a cat. she kept them really clean and she left her animals and that was her hobby and it's all gone. >> cell phone video from a neighbor shows just how intense the flames were at 5:15 this morning. firefighters called for three alarms and they overwhelmed the flames with water and kept them from spreading from six other units and the fire fighting careers and the quicker we can get water to the fire and we can reduce damage from the fire unit and the extension, as well. >> a couple and their 5-year-old granddaughter told firefighters a smoke alarm woke them up. the man was taken to the hospital and the woman was evaluated at the scene. >> she ain't here.

afternoon against unprotected sex with ebola survivors. a woman in liberia recently contracted the virus after unprotected sex with the survivor of the disease. it's conducting a study to see how long the virus can remain viable in bodily fluids and the sexual transmission. new food handling procedures in place at a tennessee school district, this after 6-year-old meat was served to the kids for lunch. the revelation came to light after a parent got a photo from a concerned cafeteria pork who noticed the pork they were serving was dated 2009. that cook was told to cover the pork with gravey to make it taste better. >> it just very upsets me that these kids are going to school to get that meal. >> the good news is none of the

trouble at the watergate. three stories of a parking garage under construction at the complex in washington d.c. perhapsed today. one person was taken to the hospital and you see the minor injuries. a construction worker told news crews he heard a rumble and then saw a 40 foot by 40 foot section to go down and it is the site of the 1972 break-in at the national democratic convention headquarter that led to the resignation of president nixon. >> after falling a trench today in the crown heights section of brooklyn new york. it took a swarm of firefighters to pull a man to safety maneuvering stretchers ropes and other pieces of equipment into the place.

investors on wall street had kind of a lukewarm reaction to tesla's big battery announcement and the palo alto-based company closed the day pretty much where it started at just 226 per share. ceo elon musk announced the powerwall home battery in southern california. the battery which is based on the design for tesla's model s cars will cost $3500. musk is anticipating what he's calling a power revolution. >> it's not the greatest thing in the world so being able to just have the solution that just works wherever you are i think is going to be incredibly helpful. the home battery comes in different colors that can be mounted on your wall. musk compared it to a sculpture and not sure we're buying that, but the initial model is more of a backup power supply if your home loses power. the battery is expected to be available late this summer. it's true the new apple watch and tattoos don't mix.

today the tech giant confirmed that large dark tattoos can block the sensors built into the watch. apple's statement follows a week of reports with disgruntled customers with wrist tattoos. they recognize users without them putting a password. users who can't get a consistent heart rate reading connect their apple watch wirelessly to external heart rate monitors. in other health news a new study is linking diabetes with soda and each a little walking can improve your health. jane king has today's report. people who drink a single sugar-sweetened drink every day versus those who drink water coffee or tea had a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and this is the case for diet soda. do you want to reduce your risk of dying at a young age? try walking cash ally for as

my mortgage is under my husband's name. i'm concerned if he were to die before the house is paid off i could lose the house. what can i do? >> a mortgage when someone dies who has a mortgage it's called due on sale which means they don't own the property anymore so all of the mortgage is owed. if you're a spouse, you are generally excluded from this, but there is a catch. you have to be able to make the payment on that mortgage and the bank has to be able to believe that you can make that payment. so that's a big problem. i want you to talk to an attorney right now and make sure that you come up with a plan and interest rates are very low and it's a good time to redo a mortgage perhaps and if you're on the mortgage and you're generally okay and you just keep going, but if it's not your house and you're not on the mrorgage you could be out of luck. debbie asked i went to the store to buy alcohol they wanted

to swipe my license. can they refuse to sell to me? >> they're absolutely allowed to swipe your license. remember, the information that's on the back of the card on the swipe line is the stuff that's on the front. so it's not all that different. they're not allowed to save that information. they're just allowed to use it to check to make sure you're of age and they can't hang onto it they aren't allowed to use the information, but they are allowed to swipe it. >> our contractor is not honoring their warranty and not returning our phone calls. who should we call? >> contractors state license board. these guys do a pretty good job. you want to start there and file a complaint if they can and have the time and they generally do a very good job of this and they'll try to mediate this between you and your contractor and if they have enough complaints the contractor could have a problem. if that doesn't work then you're looking at small claims court. >> those are always a pleasant conversation and they have to come back to do the work.
