after the pilot made an emergency landing back in hawaii hawaii. hawaiian airlines flight 24 had to head back to the maui airport because of an odor of smoke or fumes of some kind in the cabin. the ten crew members helped to evacuate all 224 passengers using the plane's emergency slides. >> there have been a lot of may day rallies today and may day is historically a day of protest for labor issues and perhaps social injustice and may day protesters gathered at the port of oakland before marching through the city. this annual demonstration has been centered on labor issues and immigrant, but today union workers and supporters focused on relations between people and police. their goal was to affirm humanity for people of color. another group of protesters were in oakland. their target the bus's high tech company such as facebook use to carry their workers to silicon valley and san francisco. the protesters say the tech workers were gentrifying

neighborhoods like the one near the station. protesters sued facebook to get the word out on the protest. >> now we want to check in with abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman live with the rally going in san francisco. wayne? >> good evening, dan. it's a miracle we made it to where we made it. traffic in san francisco behind the rally that left civic center plaza at 3:45 today and behind us with all of the rally behind the police presence and it's practically gridlocked and pedestrians were making more progress than we were. between their 24th, let's show you sky 7 along nearby surface streets and it's been gridlocked and like the demonstration that came before it was loud and workers this year talking about the fact that on this may day san francisco's minimum wage increase for $11.05 to $12.25 an hour. the other issue continues to be immigration. service employees, international

union was represented heavily and many demonstrators and marchers were from local 87 and local janitors. may day is a holiday for the working class and it's really about struggle. the city is becoming them versus us, the rich versus the poor and there is no middle there. >> they didn't know what was going to happen with the rest of their families even though they were safe. >> reporter: that was local 87 president olga miranda. that was a short time ago at the rally which began at the civic center plaza and the rally that became a march that is now headed here at 24th and mission street in san francisco. >> i apologize to you and again, to stress that rally and the march loud but very peaceful and the good news for them, this was supposed to end at 5:go and

thus far, everything has run on time. >> wayne, thanks much. let's head to san jose where aishs 7 news' david louie is live with protesters there. >> reporter: you know because of the large immigrant community there always is a very vocal component of the community that wants to make sure these issues are kept in the forefront, but surprisingly, the crowds today have been very, very small. groups were in several locations in east san jose and the largest on the corner of story and ring roads where elected officials were joined by labor leaders to rally. immigration reform is on hold, but many people turn out to make sure no one forgets the status of many families rest with the courts. they also are concerned about the escalating costs of living in the bay area. even with san jose's living wage of $10 an hour and it's impossible to make ends meet. some are approaching a $15 wage.

they think it's important to send out an important message. >> that's the dream so everyone can kind of understand what the struggle is and not just you know assume that people are here to, you know take jobs and stuff like that and that immigration reform is what we need for people like my siblings and my friends and my family members so they can have a better future. >> the dream of a middle-class life is evaporating for many many families particularly here in silicon valley. >> the may day march is on king road which becomes santa clara street. that takes them right to san jose city hall where there are more speeches. religiously, they're also participating and all of this creating temporary road closures and northbound 101 has been closed, but it's just in the process of now reopening. >> a new element includes the message that black lives matter.

setting the massive rim fire in yosemite. that fire burned more than a quarter million acres in 2014. it cost more than $125 million to fight. keith emerald was accused of starting it with an illegal campfire during a deer hunting trip and lying about it. prosecutors said the death of two key witnesses forced them to drop the case. police in livermore had a popular hiking trail this week didn't happen. authorities say the women a 29-year-old and a 23-year-old separately recanted the reports last night and this morning. the first woman claimed she was attacked from behind on tuesday on the arroyo trail and the second woman claimed she was assaulted yesterday. no word if the women will be cited for filing false police reports. dunphy park in sausalito just reopened after police reopened it after a body was found on the shoreline. it's believed to be that of a 66-year-old homeless man. police are treating this as a suspicious death. the main thorough fare in

the death of freddie gray. he was arrested april 12th and suffered a spinal injury while being transported. grey died one week later. the medical examiner called gray's death a homicide. the officers face charges from assaults to involuntary manslaughter. the officer who drove the van was charged with second-degree depraved heart murder. they have to show the driver showed extreme indifference to gray leading to his death. >> despite mr. gray's obvious and recognized need for medical assistance officer goodson in a grossly negligent manner showed to respond with mr. gray still without seat belt in the wagon without summoning medical assistance. >> today thousands marched through the streets of baltimore and another larger demonstration is scheduled for tomorrow is being called a victory rally. the charges were also cheered on by rival gangs. two riefral leaders came

together today in an embrace. they actually swapped numbers to continue communication. we'll hear from gray's family coming up on world news with david muir. the family of a san francisco murder victim is relieved this evening by the conclusion of an dragged on more than 6 1/2 years. angelo zuniga was killed on october 28 2008. the next day police arrested martin martinez and that's when the action in this case seemed to suddenly freeze. today more than six and a half years later, sentencing for the man convicted of killing angelo. abc 7 news reporter vic lee was in the courtroom and has this exclusive report. >> reporter: well dan, as expected there are a lot of family and friends here at the courthouse today to support the victim's mother and that long frustrating sad ordeal is finally over. >> justice

does that word mean anything to you. >> monica gonzalez has waited for justice for seven long years and today the long wrat is over. martin martinez her son's killer will finally be sentenced. >> 50 family and friends gathered eager to hear the judge's decision. martinez stabbed angelo zuning a to death at a party in 2008. martinez was arrested the next morning, but it took six long years for the case to go to trial. gonzalez wrote letters to politicians and asked why too many times to count. the answers were always the same. >>. >> that's the system we're sorry. that's how it works and we try our best you know? >> reporter: there were endless delays lawyers' motions and a succession of prosecutors. all of that complicated when investigators learned martinez tried to have witnesses killed. no matter what the sentence the

family says it wouldn't be enough. >> we'll never get angelo back. the other guy is still breathing, eating showering sleeping and he'll never come back. >> my angelo is my baby boy. we love him. we'll always love him. gonzalez read the statement she planned to read in court and once in court she just couldn't do it. >> he was a flourishing young man who had a future. >> gonzalez's sister read her statement. i love you son and may god bless your soul. >> martinez sentenced him to 25 years to life. finally, justice. vic lee, abc 7 news. california university students have lost a court case battling for fee reimbursements. nearly 200,000 students enrolled in csu campuses in 2009 will not get their money back from the

fee increases and during that time the funding cost csu officials to raise the fall semester rates of fees for undergraduates by nearly $700. tomorrow is one week since the devastating earthquake hit nepal and more than 6,000 people died. the biggest need now is food and shelter for the survivors. olga murray from the bay area is doing her part. she just got back from that country here home where she heads the nepal youth foundation. it provides schooling and nutrition programs, but the group has switched gears at the moment and it is now providing shelter for those injured or homeless and helping hospitals care for patients. we're buying tents and tarps. shelter is first. we're buying surgical equipment. we've authorized two hospitals to go out and buy whatever you can up to $30,000. >> incredible what they're doing. the nepal youth foundation needs money to buy more medical supplies and tents before monsoon season starts which is next month and that could be

hd and we'll talk about what it looks like from that perspective. you can see the coastline is socked in from points rays down toward the monterey bay and it all started this morning and fog worked its way up the coastline and what we call a southerly surge and with that surge temperatures have really dropped and look at the 24-hour temperature change down 21 in san francisco and 20-degree drop in oakland, palo alto and not very noticeable inland yet but you will start to see the difference. with the cooling starting our summerlike microclimates we're showing up and 59 in half moon bay and 64 downtown san francisco and headed to the east bay and pretty mild in oak larndz and certainly not the upper 80s of yesterday and 70 degrees and walnut creek 91 and still sunny at 91 degrees and here is why it cooled off and a nice picture from the east bay hills camera and visible there in the middle and oakland, 65 and it's still in the 70s and san carlos and san jose, half
