in oakland tonight where may day protests have turned violent. a short time ago the crowd broke apart and small groups of marchers began vandalism sprees. smashing windows along broadway. you can see the shattered glass and the blown outdoors. >> it did not stop there. the group crashed a metal barrier through the windows at this kfc throwing glass everywhere as you can see. then they turned their sights on car dealerships along tele grash smashing windows and causing fires. >> police gave disperse sal orders, but it didn't stop the destruction. a large group of protesters is gathered back at the plaza. >> i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. we will have more on that in a moment in a live report. first -- >> you better get off the property or i'll call the police. >> i am on a public sidewalk. >> this is my property and you need to get out of here. >> a fixture in bay area veterans groups has been keeping a secret for more than a decade and now that it has

been uncovered by the abc7 news i team the man is under investigation by at least two federal agencies. >> and now dan noyes is here with the story. >> i have spoken to so many people about lieutenant greg alan. he has fooled people and gained their trust and sometimes taken their money, and now you are going to hear the truth. >> i am from marin county, california. >> marine simon duvall is in the philippines on a joint exercise. i spoke to him by sat tau light about the -- satellite training he received. >> i learned a lot from lieutenant alan, the man who runs the place. it definitely prepared me and gave me an upper edge. >> at first he opened the fitness boutique with a smile sign over the doorway. and then 10 years ago fitness boot camps were popular. he remodeled the boutique to the house of steel with

marine-style workouts for soccer moms and teens who want to join the military. before the sun is up you can see boys and girls training at the gym in san rafael. and in the parking lot of the nearby whole foods. greg alan also upgraded his image adding a marine uniform and a bunch of medals including a purple heart and a bronze star and a new title first lieutenant. >> he was a recon that you sense sense -- reconnaissance marine and somebody to look up to. >> he told war stories and the paper quoted him in a profile "i am a vietnam veteran. i was in a lot of conflicts. ones i mentioned and ones i don't. i did two tours and active from 1967 to 1974. he became president of the military officers association of america marin chapter. he joined the marin united council and had his clients

>> he did enlist in the navy, but was discharged after eight months because of a preexisting knee injury from high school football. >> you lied to these kids. >> i have not lied to the kids. get away. go away. >> you have not. i have the records. >> you know what, it is time -- i don't need to show you anything. you do what you got to do and we'll respond to you. >> alan declined to show me his discharming up pas that every service member received from any branch of the military. the extent of alan's lies shocked those at a marines memorial event to mark the 50th anniversary of the vietnam war. >> we served in the war for each other. >> he is one of 79 medal of honoree sip yents still alive. he tells me that the vietnam vets had to count on the respect and accolades of their peers and that alan's lies are serious. >> someone like this comes in and tries to hone in on that and steal that and misuse it

through misrepresentation. it is disgusting. >> he was never in the marines. >> and you introduced me to him? >> if they are saying that and putting that on, they have more problems than an algebra book. >> three things pose the biggest problems. he posted this picture on his facebook page with the general at the marine training center in san diego. i contacted the general's office and now alan is banned from all marine functions and facilities. no marine recruit is allowed to work out at the house of steel. alan allowed me to snap his v.a. health care card with the marine insignia. they are investigating if he fraudulently obtained benefits and then there is alan standing with his phony medals in front of the casket of a young marine from marin county who died if service. >> we find it extraordinarily offensive. >> colonel bill pea -- peacock

set the wheels this motion. the fbi has launched a criminal investigation into whether alan raised money based on his phony persona. one man tells me he gave alan $5,000 at a house of steel fundraiser because he thought alan really was a marine lieutenant. >> if he's not guilty, that's great. if he is let's make sure he pays the price. that marine in in the casket really paid the price. >> and then there is his felony record. he received three years in state prison after violating a restraining order climbing into his wife's window threatening to kill her. they can't believe this is the man they trusted with their sons and daughters and their money in some cases. >> dan, thank you. now we turn to those protests in oakland that were violent. rioters are roaming through

the streets. alan wang has the latest for us tonight. alan? >> hi, ama. at almost every major protest over the years the wells fargo bank has been a victim of vandalism. today is no different. this started at 8:00 and quickly went downhill. nearly 500 protesters left oakland city hall and marched toward the police department. they were immediately met by a skirmish line of police in riot gear at broadway and seventh street. there was a short con tron station and then the crowd turned around and headed east on broadway leaving a trail of destruction. they broke the windows out at the wells fargo here at citibank and summit bank. they continued through the auto mall at telegraph and 30th. they smashed the car windows at the chevrolet and the honda dealers. they even set one car on fire. there was at least one arrest and police made nine total

arrests. one of the scarest moments happened at the kfc on telegraph avenue where vandals threw a steel divider in the window while the customers were in the restaurant eating. >> now this is affecting me because this is my job. i work here. i live right up the street. this is my community. it hurts my feelings that we have people walking around here this ignorant. >> oakland's first friday was also affected. as you can see crowds were enjoying the evening and they gave way to vandals who spray painted graffiti, broke windows and overturned dumpsters. 234* fact, it happened before the -- in fact it happened before the steel divider was tossed through the kfc window. it now appears the main group of protesters has broken off into splinter groups. police are casing them around the downtown area tonight. alan wang reporting live in oakland, abc7 news. >> alan, thank you. hundreds of may day

demonstrators marched through san francisco. they chanted for immigrant rights and held signs supporting the $12.25 minimum wage that kicked in today. in san jose, dozens called for an increase to the $10 minimum wage. they also said today was not just about labor issues but police brutality against my 40s. in baltimore thousands marched in celebration today after six police officers were charged in the death of freddie gray. he died from a spinal injury he suffered this police custody last month. another large celebratory march is scheduled for tomorrow. charges against the six officers here they are, range from assault to involuntary manslaughter. >> two people were shot to death at a home that was targeted by robbers earlier this week. it happened at 9:00 tonight at a home about a block from foothill elementary school. they are trying to determine if the homeowner interrupted a burglary and shot them. they said four people were arrested at the same time

earlier this week. a passenger describes what happened on a high high an airlines flight to oakland forced to make an emergency landing. new cell phone video shows passengers on flight 24 in maui going out this afternoon on slides. one man from walnut creek told me honolulu star advertiser he heard a strange sound in the landing gear after takeoff. he said the plane veered and did not rise fast though. two passengers went to hospital with mainer injuries. the pilot reported smoke and an odor in the cockpit. thieves stole his car, but they got away with something far more available. >> i care more about the contents than the car. >> next on abc7 news the emotional plea from a man who just wants his wife's ashes back. >> and hours away from the fight of the century, but did you know manny pacquiao's road to the ring began here sph you will hear from the local man who helped the boxer get his start. >> i'm sandhya patel. the temperatures toppled today and are trending lower for the

prince or princess. back here in the bay area an emotional plea for help pr a man passing through san francisco. the widower was on his way to oregon to scatter his wife's ashes when his car was stolen in the richmond district. his wife's ashes are in the car. abc7 news reporter is live where that car was stall 11. was stolen. >> the blue honda civic has a new mexico license plate and was taken from this very spot. this is caw brewy -- cabrillo and fourth. it is what's inside the car that is precious. the owner is hoping someone will find the con tepts and -- contents and turn them over to police. >> it is like a promise we made to each other. >> he is on an emotional journey. he was bound for the pacific northwest with precious cargo in his car. >> was heading to oregon because my wife indicated that she would like her ashes put in the ocean at a certain

the first time those two were on the same card was nearly 14 years ago in san francisco. abc7 news reporter talked with a guy who helped put that fight together. it was 2001 and the then mayor was celebrating the first championship in the city in decades. when you look at the program from that night mayweather and jesus chavez were the big card and down below was pacquiao. >> we purposely took that fight, taking small money so he would be known by the filipino community in the bay area. >> back then sydney hall was pacquiao's attorney. he said the young fighter had a clear idea of what he wanted to accomplish. at today's weight in and faceoff against mayweather, it is part of an amazing journey. >> to him it must be an interesting dream come true because he visualized all of this. >> these pictures of pacquiao's first days in the bay area were shot by daly
