way into the livermore available. 9 degrees cooler this morning and san jose. and we will talk about the cooler afternoon highs and the cooler sunday in just a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news out of london. it's a girl! the duchess of cambridge gave birth this morning is a girl weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces. lindsey has more. >> royal baby number two is here. and it's a girl! her name not yet revealed, but the formal birth announcement will be on display outside buckingham palace and a more modern tweet from kensington palace. the duke and duchess expect to come out and introduce the new royal just as they did two years ago with the new born baby george. as for a name for the fourth in line to the thrown, speculation

has been swirling for weeks. >> they use traditional names. i think they will goat same way this time. elizabeth, the queen's name, victoria, the former queen's name and other names alice charlotte, alexandra. >> royal sources say the new family of four will spend a few days at their official home in london kensington palace before heading to their ten-bedroom country estate. the duke taking two weeks paternity leave from his new job as an air ambulance helicopter pilot. while the duchess expecting to take more time than she did with her first child, perhaps waiting many months before returning to royal duties. and the couple have no current plans to hire an extra nanne. abc news london. >> turning now to the bay area cleanup is underway in oakland

it morning after a may day protest turned destructive. abc7 was there last night as police officers made several arrests at 13th and broadway. more than a dozen people were arrested. the evening began quietly enough when nearly 500 protesters met a line of police in riot gear at broadway and seventh. the protesters turned on broadway and that's when the destruction began. windows were broken out at a wells fargo broke. and at least 30 vehicles at a car dealership were smashed and a few cars were set on fire. and customers were alarmed inside the kfc. >> we eat here you know. and just doing things that everyone does. you have to come together. you don't have to vandalize >> may day traditionally

celebrates workers' rights but in recent years have grown as a protest to police brutality and in support of social justice >> hundreds of may day demonstrators marred marched through san francisco. and they protested the minimum wage is kicked in yesterday. they call an increase the ten dollars minimum wage. they said may day was not just about labor issues but police brutality against minorities. >> in baltimore thousands marched in celebration after six police officers were charged in the death of freddy gray. he suffered from a spinal injury he suffered in police custody last month. another gathering is scheduled. to we have more. >> freddie gray committed no crime but the cheers when they announced the six officers who arrested him did.

>> the deaths was a homicide, which we received to. led us to believe he we have probable cause to file criminal charges. >> marilyn moseby charging them with mistreating freddie gray in three specific ways, arresting him without probable cause. knife was in his pocket and not illegal. driving him to the police station, legs shackled and legs cuffed but no seatbelt, and, third, wait to go provide medical assistance even when he asked for help and after he became unresponsive. the officers did not call paramedics or offer first aid. prosecutor saying freddie suffered the fatal wounds insides the van. officesser who drove the van charged with second degree murder. they took on the silent blueline

that they say too often protects bad cops. >> to the people of baltimore and demonstrators across america, i heard your call for no justice, no peace. >> but she also addressed the police force. >> these accusations are these six officers are to not an indictment on the entire force. i come from five generations of law enforcement. my father was an officer. my mother was an officer. >> no comment from the six officers, but the police union asked the state's attorney to pull out of the case and turn it over to a special prosecutor citing quote, very deep concerns about the many conflicts of many. >> we believe that the actions taken today by the state's attorney are an egregious rush to judgment. >> but in an interview with her she told me her office will not give up the case. >> my job as a prosecutor is to follow and uphold the law equally, applying justice to those with or without a badge. >> abc news, baltimore.

>> back at home police in pittsburgh are investigating after two people were shot shot to detect at a home that was targeted by robbers earlier this week. it happened last night about a block from foothills elementary school. at the they are trying to determine if the homeowner interrupted a burglary and shot them. four people were arrested at a home invasion problem bring at the same location earlier in the week. there was an emergency landing this morning. cell phone videos show passengers on flight 24 maui going out yesterday afternoon. one told the honolulu advertisor he heard a strange sound in the landing gear after the plane took off. it veered and didn't rise fast enough. pilots included smoke and an odor in the cockpit. >> the boxes world will focus on

oregon to scatter his wife's ashes when his car was stolen. his wife's ashes are in the car. katie marzullo explains. >> it's like a promise we made to each other. >> he is on an emotional journey. he left his home in new mexico bound for the pacific northwest with precious cargo in his car. >> i was heading to argen because my wife indicated that she would like her ashes put in the ocean at a certain place in oregon where she spent some time. >> he's a musician and his wife amy, a writer, singer and artist had only been together four years when she died of cancer in january. >> it was the best time for both of us. >> her ashes are now gown, taken along with the blue '97 honda civic. he posted this ad on craigslist

of the report he's received has launched a campaign for sick children. it was in danville yesterday. mr. smith took contributions for the miracle balloon campaign to benefit children's hospital oakland. smith is sick himself. he has bone cans asker and multiple sclerosis but you wouldn't know it from his upbeat attitude. he kicked this off after customers raised money for him and decided to gift money to the kids. >> it's really a miracle that all this attention is brought to them. >> $65,000 has been raised so far. criminal charges against a hunter accused of starting a massive wildfire near yosemite two years ago has been dropped. the rim fire was one of the biggest fires in california history. prosecutors say they can't prove their case after two of their key witnesses died. here's tim daily are more. >> the rim fire started at the

bottom of this canyon between groveland and yosemite and quickly moved in all possible directions. months later a columbia man named keith emerald was charged with starting the illegal campfire that got out of control. in of some people threatened weren't kind. >> he's an idiot. who would light a fire in the middle of august in a crispy little river canyon. it's complete stupidity. >> two witnesses have died. one a friend of emerald died in february in a workplace accident. court records show jerry bonner was the other witness and he rescued emerald from the canyon when the fire took off. bonner died in march of natural causes. without those witnesses, the case against emerald is dropped. >> it's pretty sad. we are pretty disgusted with it. i mean, if it's truly his fault

that he should pay the consequences. >> this neighborhood near the community of pine mountain lake barely survived the rim fire. a resident has this proposal for emerald now that he won't face what could have been a sentence of 11 years in prison. >> i would have liked to have seen at least him providing fireworks every weekend. >> he has turned down all attempts by reporters for interviews. rim fire two summers ago destroyed 11 homes, many injuries and cost more than $21 million to fight. abc7 news. a check with the full accuweather forecast in san francisco. a break from the warmer temperatures we've had the last few days. >> a considerable break. inland valleys will cool. and the temperatures a little narrower today. we have nothing in the way of cloud cover really to talk

about. the low clouds and fog right now will be showing up a little bit later. but 6:13 is the official sunrise. southwest winds gusting to over 30 miles an hour allowing for the comm air to reach the delta and the inland east bay. low 50s for the city. 53 oakland g morning, san jose, 53 for you. 50 morgan hill. half moon bay looks warmer now but by the afternoon still just in the 50s. and from the roof camera the low 50s from santa rosa to napa. deck of low clouds actually higher deeper and it's moved across the bay. we aren't look at much in the way of problems if you head in through the golden gate or bay bridge. and the east hill valleys, not affecting there yet. most of the bay it's cooler for everyone. further cooling for the second half of the weekend. and then temperatures really

don't move that much throughout the week ahead. the first week of may. in fact, it will be quite seasonal where the great starts and the afternoon sunshine, and the breezy pattern we will show you over and over for probably the next several months. here's a look where we were with high pressure in command. the highs continue to shift to the east and the low clouds, the fog and the steady sea breeze allowing for the carolina air to be transported to the east. 5:00 this morning you see the clouds footprint not quite in the east bay valley. we could see some throughout the livermore valley. and then the 9:00, 10:00 hours it pulls back. 11:00 we are still cloudy at the coast and by the afternoon we will see sunshine. but it's going to be close with a partly sunny sky along the coast today. highings today ranging from the mid-70s for much of santa clara. 77 in san jose. 79 in los gatos. one of the warmer locations.

mid-70s for you in mountain view and redwood city. looking for highs today downtown. 63. you will get breezy. you see the clouds clinging here in the san mateo coast and up in the north bay brief sunshine but, boy, cool at stinson. 58 there and 72 in napa. upper 50s oakland and lower 70s newark. head inland even upper 70s from concord. but still the 80s return in the inland valleys. but it was in the 90s yesterday. the seven-day forecast will feature the same old same old but if you are headed in the east bay today into san francisco it it will be pleasant. 60 here with low 60s for the game this afternoon and here's the seven-day outlook showing the breezy winds and temperatures really not budging much throughout the next several days into the first week of may. you can see what is showing up on live doppler 7hd anytime with the abc7 news weather app. it's free at apple's app store

the saint mary's hospital. the birth was announced just before 3:30 this morning pacific time. she's the first princess born into the british royal family since her great-aunt princess anderson in is the 50. an investigation is underway in washington after reports that u.s. capitol police officers left loaded gun in bathroom stalls while on duty. reports by congressional quarterly and roll call describe three similar incidents. in january an officer with national majority leader mitch mcconnell security detail left a pistol in a toilet seat cover. and an officer left a gun behind after using a toilet near the office. the gun was found by a child who used the restroom later. and capitol police at headquarters found a misplaced gun while cleaning. the lasting impress left by two young people from kenya. more about the educational opportunities they are getting

so that onshore push gets going and the temperatures seasonal today. upper 50s to low 60s around the bay. san francisco mid-60s to lower 70s. san francisco we still have some 80s and we will trim them back into sunday and next week. chris. >> thank you. new this morning, president obama is reaffirming his commitment to education and spread the joy of reading. in his weekly address he spoke from a public library near the capitol. it's the same place he chatted with middle school students earlier this week. >> we spent time talking about their lives and how we all care about their success and how that starts with a good education. so one thing i announced here other, a new project by lay burglaries and major punlishers to provide more than $250 million in free e-books for low income students. >> the president also issues a challenge to mayors and school leadtories help every student

get a library card, adding that a great education is the ticket to a better life. a bay area nonprofit that created a school for girls in east africa invited two of the students to go to school here for a little while. they spent three weeks at a school in portolo valley. and they are determined to become leaders in kenya. ♪ ♪ >> this is from the academy website and shows the girls who attend this tuition-free boarding school in kenya. it means bridge. it was founded by a san rafael couple. the girls are from 18 different tribes in east africa that go to school peacefully together, live on the campus and are learning to be leaders. two of those students came to america for the first time to attend a boarding school in portola valley for three weeks.

they were welcomed by other students who acted as ambassadors. >> you were lucky that you were chosen to come here, right? >> they already know what they want to do with their lives even before they graduate. [foreigning language] >> i would like to be a journalist just like you. >> the principal victoria, came with the girls. they said the students are highly motivated in spite of their circumstances. >> some girls do not have parents and others have parents but they are still poor to the point that they have to be away from the children to find money. >> we provide a four-year scholarship for them and when they leave our program they have had leadership training, empowerment and life skills training and they exit being prepped for college career in community. >> jason a california high school teachers and football

coach said they asked the kenyon government for guidance in starting the school. >> it was clearly high school for girls. >> and these students are among the lucky ones. only 30 students are selected each year. >> it takes $2500 to educate a girl for one year at the academy. >> they went to kenya to see the program. she has sponsored six girls every year. >> one of my foundation goals is to educate girls throughout the world. >> they are learning about american education and building relationships. >> to see the successful girls who are very friendly and are just great young women. i think it shows a lot to our kids about how kids are around the world. >> some people are homeless, and i would like to make a home for them. i want to show people it's not all about -- but it's more of

unity. >> cheryl jennings abc7 news. >> the academy is holding a fundraiser in berkeley tomorrow so it can expand and include more girls. go to our website abc7news.com for details. the government of nepal is putting out an urgent appeal for aid this morning. you are looking at new video. death follow now stands at more than 6600 and officials say there's little time left to find anyone who might still be alive in the rubble. 400,000 families need tents to live in temporarily but the government has only been able to provide 29,000. salt, sugar and grains are needed as well. a group is mobilizing to shelter the injured and the homeless in nepal. this woman worked half a year in the country. she just got back home. her group has been providing education and nutrition programs in nepal for decades. it's now using its money to buy

christie's deputy chief of staff and both were also indicted. >> i am not a liar and i never lied to anyone about the george washington bridge issue. >> in order to punish mark, the mayor, for not endorsing governor christie's re-election. >> governor christie was not implicated in the indictment. that confirms his previous statement that he didn't know about the scheme. it happens all the time around the bay area. in a recent hackathon in san francisco, it was no different except for one thing the people doing it may be the farthest thing from your average techie. we have the story. >> i am here for hack division. this is my site. >> it's a skill every techie should have. presenting at the panel of judges at then of the frantic hackathon.

been solved. michael finney has more on why there was the wait. >> the hjalmarssons remember the day in 2002. it was a day both where rather forget. >> my great-aunt passed away. >> they were the only surviving relatives and would have to travel out-of-state to make arrangements. they had went to the now shut-down world savings and closed out their certificate of deposit of more than $11,000. when they returned a month later the check was nowhere to be found. shirley had misplaced it. >> naturally i think anybody would have felt miserable losing that much money, especially when it was for our grand daughter. >> the couple had hoped to earmark the money for the 2-year-old's college fund. this is something that haunted them for years. >> we continued thinking about it since it was a large amount. we looked everywhere and neither

one of us could remember where she put it. >> through it all shirley said her husband remained calm. >> he doesn't get mad at me. we've been married 67 years. that might have a little something to do with it. >> fast forward to 2013 the halls decided to donate their dining room set and it included the hutch. they cleaned out the dollar and in the bottom drawer under a matt was the long-lost check. >> wow, i was pretty flabbergasted. >> here's a copy of the check. unfortunately it was void after 90 days. by this time world savings had been bought out twice. first by wachovia back in 2008 and then by wells fargo in 2013. wells fargo said they can find no record of the check. the state comptroller's office who helps people find money said

the same thing. but it was payable through preferred bank. no luck there. no luck either at american express, which apparently issued the check. the couple finally contacted "7 on your side" and we contacted the come many -- comp trollers office. on friday the 13th they said they found the check and gave them the money. >> put it in the bank right away. they said they could have done a better job tracking down the check the first time. and they said american express should have reported it as required by law. they suggest the halls should have requested a replacement check the moment they lost it. >> we will let people know that "7 on your side" is on your side. >> little alexandra is now in high school and expects to have to pay for college in a couple of years partly with the gift from our grandparents. >> that was michael finney

cloud deck. it is a gray start in the north bay from petaluma. fairfield 53. over into our valleys looking at 54 degrees in livermore. and from emeryville right now looking at more gray with cooler for your high temperatures today everywhere. in fact the numbers continue to tumble. seasonal pattern next week. what does that mean? we've been so far away from averages, kind of takes you a minute to think about what is normal for may. the high pressure continues to drift to the east and that influences the coastal temperatures, around the bay and even the inland valleys through tomorrow. so the coolest day will be tomorrow with highs barely reaching 608 degrees. we still have some 80-degree temperatures on tap. we have a swell that will pick up today and last through tuesday. surfing will probably be good but dangerous.
