live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc 7 news." >> the time is 8:00. glad to have you with us on this saturday morning, may 2nd. cooler temperatures for the start of the weekend. here's meteorologist with a first look at live doppler 7 hd. hi. >> hi, chris. it's a cloudy start here in the city. in the north bay, the peninsula. but across the bay, sunshine and that's where we start. from our east bay hills camera you're looking out towards mt. diablo where it will be a cooler afternoon. as much as ten degrees cooler. 54 degrees at the coast. that's the only warmer spot this

morning. everyone else is already feeling the affects of the taller, deeper marine layer that is increasing the relative humidity. the air quality is good and we'll have that afternoon sea breeze keeping the coast cool and cloudy in the 50s. 63 downtown. upper 60s over into oakland. today still a few 80s inland but not tomorrow. we'll have that forecast for you coming up. chris? lisa thank you. new developments out of london. it's a girl for the royal family family. duchess of cambridge gave birth weighing 8 pounds and 3 ounces. abc news reporter has more. >> reporter: royal baby number two is here and it's a girl. her name not yet revealed. but the formal birth announcement will be on display outside buckingham palace and more modern tweet sent from kensington palace. the duke and duchess expected to come out and introduce the newest royal just as they did nearly two years ago with a

newborn baby george. as for a name for the fourth in line to the throne speculation has been swirling for weeks. >> favorite names at the moment are very traditional names. william and kate went for traditional names with george. i think people are thinking they're going to go the same way this time. favorite girl's name elizabeth queen's name victoria, other royal names alex charlotte, alexandra. >> reporter: the new family of four will spend a few days a t their official home in london kensington palace, before heading to their ten bedroom george and country estate. the duke taking two weeks paternity leave from his new job as an air ambulance helicopter pilot. while the duchess expected to take more time than she did after her first child. perhaps waiting several months before returning to her royal duties. and being the modern royals that they are, the couple have no current plans to hire an extra

nanny. abc news, london. and video just in moments ago of prince william departing the hospital to cheers from the crowd that gathered there. we know the duke of cambridge was there for the bytebirth of his girl but prince george wasn't. he will soon return to the hospital to be with daughter and mom. in developing news contra costa county sheriff's deputies are at the scene of a homicide in bay point. they responded to a call from the restaurant around 2:00 this morning where they found nine people hurt, including two people trapped underneath a vehicle. one of the injured has died. authorities say witnesses told them a man began driving through the parking lot hitting people on purpose. clean-up is under way in oakland after may day protests turned destructive. abc news was there last night as police officers made several arrests at 13th and broadway. more than a dozen people were arrested. the evening began quietly enough

when nearly 500 protesters met a squirmish line of police in riot gear at broadway and 7th. protester turned around down broadway and that's when the destruction began. windows were broken out of the wells fargo bank you see here. telegraph and 30th at least 40 vehicles at a car dealership were smashed and a few cars were set on fire. at telegraph and 28th vabd dalls tossed a steel divider into a kfc restaurant while customers were eating inside. >> it hurts my feelings that we have people walk around here doing things that are uncalled for. you don't have to do this to get your voices heard. you know? all you have to do is come together. you don't have to vandalize. >> maytraditionally celebrates workers' rights but this recent years it has grown as a protest to police brutality and in support of social justice. looking at the new video just in to our newsroom of the damage at auto row -- in oakland.

this video was taken just moments ago. and with the daylight video you can see the extent of the damage to cars. windows out of car dealership was smashed in. again, about 40 cars were damaged in all. hundreds of may day demonstrators marched through san francisco. they chanted for immigrant rights and held signs for $12.25 minimum wage that kicked in yesterday. down in san jose dozens called for an increase to the $10 minimum wage there. they also said may day was not just about labor issues but police brutalities against minorities rchls in baltimore thousands marched in seldcelebration after six police officers were charged in the death of freddie gray. he died from a spinal injury he suffered while in police custody last month. another large march is scheduled for later today. charges against the six officers seen here on your screen range from involuntary manslaughter to second degree murder. back here at home police in pittsburgh are investigating or

two people were shot to death at a home that was targeted by robbers earlier this week. it happened last night at home about a block away from foothill elementary school. investigators are still trying to determine if the homeowner interrupted a burglary and shot them. four people were arrested after a home invase/robbery at the same location earlier this week. time now is 8:06. hawaiian airlines flight the expected to return to oakland after being forced to make an emergency landing. passengers on flight 24 in maui going out yesterday afternoon on flights. one man from walnut creek told the honolulu star advertiser he heard a strange sound in the landing gear after takeoff. the plane veered an didn't rise fast enough. two passengers went to the hospital with minor injuries. the pilot reported smoke and odor in the cockpit. the boxing world will be focused on las vegas today. for the first time those two were on the same card was nearly

bound for the pacific northwest with precious cargo in his car. >> i was heading to oregon because my wife indicated that she would like her ashes put in the ocean at a certain place in oregon where she spent some time. >> reporter: philip, a musician and his wife amy, a writer, singer, and artist had only been together four years when she died of cancer in january. >> truz the best time for both of news our lives. >> reporter: amy's ash rest gone taken along with the blue '97 honda civic stolen this week. philip posted this ad on criagslist describing the contents of the car which include years as well as amy's poems and jerusalem s journals. philip is staying at friend's house for now. he will wait as long as he can before leaving. he's still going to oregon.

it from his super hero cape flashy glasses and upbeat attitude. he kicked off the fund-raiser after customers raised money for him and decided to give all that money to the kids. >> what's happening is really a miracle, that all of this attention is being brought to them. >> $65,000 has been raised so far. criminal charges against a hunter accuse of starting a massive wildfire near yosemite two years ago have been dropped. the rim fire was one of the biggest fires in california history but prosecutors say they can't prove their case after two of their key witnesses died. reporter tim daully has more. >> reporter: the rim fire started at the bottom of the river canyon between groveland and yosemite then quickly moved in all possible directions. months later a columbia man was charged with starting the illegal camp fire that got out of control. at the time some people who had been threatened by the rim fire weren't kind. >> i just think he's an idiot. i mean, who would light a fire

in the middle of august in a crispy little river canyon. it's complete stupidity. >> reporter: now the anger will rise further with the news two witnesses in the case to prosecute emerald have died, one, a friend of emerald's died in february in a workplace accident court records show cal fire pilot jerry bonner was the other witness. he rescued emerald from the canyon when the fire took off. bonner died in march of natural causes. without those witnesses the case against emerald is dropped. >> that's pretty sad. yeah. we're pretty disgusted with it. i mean, if it's truly his fault that, you know, he should pay the consequences. >> reporter: this neighborhood near the community of pine mountain lake barely survived the rim fire. a resident has this proposal for emerald now that he won't face what could have been a sentence of 11 years in prison. >> i would have like to have seen you know at least him put on a fire crew for every weekend

for the rest of his life. >> reporter: emerald has turned down all attempts by reporters for interviews. the rim fire two summers ago destroyed 11 home, caused 10 injuries and more than $125 million to fight. tim daily for abc7 news. 8:19. lisa, some parts of the bay area seeing sun others seeing gray skies. >> it's been funny in the east bay but you, too, will cool down this afternoon by ten degrees. yesterday was 90 both in concorde and livermore. you can see the low clouds and fog banked up along the coast. that's where it will stay keeping our beaches gray and certainly cool with numbers in the 50s. but yesterday that southerly surge, boy did you feel it from the coast to the north bay and the peninsula. and 80s yesterday were knocked down throughout the afternoon. and today we're going to see more low 80s. so nice looking start. sfo you can see a little line a deck of low clouds.

55 in oakland. good morning san jose. 55 for you. a 4, half-moon bay. and the cloud cover here from the roof camera will lift and we'll see a sunny breezy afternoon towards the ballpark. it will be a supposed any day today. fairfield, you have a wind gusts up to 32 miles an hour. the good news is relative humidity is out. air quality is much better. temperatures continue to come down for most neighborhoods. you really maximize your cooling. yesterday in petaluma napa santa rosa and san francisco. it was 70 in santa cruz yesterday. today it will be mostly cloudy partly supposed any at times. and temperatures will be cool at our beaches. this is the forecast that we're going to be replaying over and over for the next several days, weeks, months. yes, this is our pattern where we have got the cloudy start at the coast. also around the bay. sunny inland. and then cooler for all areas over the weekend. tomorrow will be the cooler day out of the two. and we'll look for the seasonal weather pattern to continue into next week. fog footprint from visible

picture right now shows that it's clear out by the delta. very gusty winds though. that's transporting the cooler air to our inland east bay. and that should feel pretty good. by that 9:00, the fog continues to retreat. you will be sunny around hayward, castro valley. it's going to take another hour for the rest of san francisco to be sunny. but it will be cloudy right along the coast. it has been. so don't expect any sunshine here. and temperatures will be cool. even in the sunset the richmond, you will have the cloudy skies and we'll look for a pretty nice afternoon. still above average though in our inland east bay with numbers in the 80s. the last day 80s there. 70s arrive tomorrow. mid 70s today for and santa cruz dropping another four or five degrees. 74 redwood city. 73 in menlo park. here are the clouds. 58 in pacifica. breezy. up in the north bay, you really cooled off yesterday.

we continue to follow new developments out of england where the duchess of cambridge gave byte to a baby girl. prince william briefly left the hospital but returned a short time ago when he returned with his son george. the newest addition to the royal family weighed in at 8 pounds, 3 ounces. she is the first princess born

into the british royal family since her great aunt princess ann in 1950. investigation under way in washington after reports that u.s. capitol police officers left loaded guns in bathroom stalls while on duty. reports by congressional quarterly and roll call described three similar incidents. in january an officer with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell left a pistol in a toilet seat cover holder. john boehner's security officers left a gun behind after using a toilet near the congressman's office. the loaded gun was found by a young child who used the rest room later. last month a housekeeper working at capitol police headquarters found a misplaced gun while cleaning. up next, the lasting impression left by two young women from kenya. we'll have more about the educational opportunity they're getting here in the bay area. plus hacking the hood. an award winning bay area program that aims to bridge the digital divide.

e-books for low-income students. >> the president also issued a challenge to mayors and school leaders to help every student get a library card. adding that a great education is with the ticket to a better life. a bay area non-profit that created a school for girls in east africa invited two of those students to go to school here for a little while. they spent three weeks at a school and as abc7 news anchor reports, they are determined to become leaders in kenya. ♪ >> reporter: this video from the academy website shows the girls who attend this tuition-free boarding school near nairobi, kenya. bridge, it was founded by a san raf fell couple jason and jenny daugherty. the girls are from 18 different tribes from east africa that go to school peacefully together, live on the campus, and are learning to be leaders. >> volleyball? >> yeah.

>> reporter: two students came to america for the first time to attend the boarding school in the valley for three weeks. they were welcomed by other students who acted as ambassadors. >> so you feel pretty lucky that you were chosen to come here. >> reporter: they already know what they want to do their lives, even before they graduate. >> discriminated and want to go and hear their voices. i would love to be a general just like you. >> reporter: their principal, victoria, came with the girls. she said students are highly motivated in spite of their circumstances. >> some girls do not have parents. others have parents but are so poor to the point that they don't have a job and they have to be away from the children to find money. >> we provide a four-year scholarship for them. when they leave the program they have life skills training and they exit our program being

prepped for college career, and community. >> i fell in love with east africa were jason a california high schoolteacher and football coach con vipsvinced his wife to start a school in kenya. they asked the government nor died dance. >> it was clearly high school, specifically for girls of poverty. >> reporter: they a among the lucky ones. only 30 students are selected each year. >> it takes about $2500 to educate a girl for one year at the academy. >> reporter: founder of the marin founder charity went to keb kenya to see the program. >> one of my goals is to educate girls around the world. >> reporter: they are learning about american education and about building relationships. >> to see these very successful girls who are very friendly and are just great young women i think it says a lot to our kids about how kids are around the world. >> some people are homeless and i would like to build home for them. >> i want to show people it's

time now is 8:40. a live look from our kgo roof camera. you see the flags blowing around. a little breezy right now. lisa returns with a full forecast in just a little bit. after nearly 13 years the case of a missing $11,000 check has been solved. michael finney has more now on why it was all worth the wait. >> robert and shirley hall remember the day in 2002. it was a day both would rather forget. >> my great aunt passed away. >> reporter: the cupertino couple were the only surviving

relatives that would have to travel out of state to make funeral arrangements. earlier that same day they had gone to the now shut down world savings and closed out their certificate of deposit of more than $11,000. when they returned a month later the check was nowhere to be found. shirley had misplaced it. >> naturally i think anybody would have felt miserable losing that much money. especially when it was for our granddaughter. >> reporter: the cupertino couple had hoped to earmark the money for 2-year-old alexandria's college fund. this is something that haunted them for years. >> we continued thinking about it since it was a large amount. and we looked everywhere. and neither one of us could remember where she put it. >> reporter: through it all shirley said her husband remained calm. >> he doesn't get mad at me. >> really? >> yeah. we've been married 67 years. i guess that might have a little something to do with it. >> reporter: fast forward to 2013, the halls decided they would donate their dining room

set. that included this hutch. they cleaned out the drawers and in the bottom drawer underneath a mat was that long lost check. >> wow. i was pretty flabbergasted. >> reporter: here's a copy of the check. unfortunately it was void after 90 days. by this time world savings had been bought out twice. first by wachovia in 2008, then by wells fargo in 2013. wells fargo said it could find no record of the check. the state controller's office which helps people find their unclaimed money said the same thing. also written on the check was the notation that it was payable through preferred bank, no luck there. no luck either at american express, which apparently issued the check. the couple finally contacted 7 on your side and we contacted the controller's office. on friday the 13th the controller's office said it had

found the check and sent the couple their money. >> i put it in the bank right away. >> reporter: the controller's office admitted it could have done a better job tracking down the check the first time. and also said, american express failed to report the halls as the owners of the uncashed check as required by law. the controller's office also suggests the halls should have requested a replacement check the moment they lost it. >> i'll let people know that 7 on your side is on your side. >> reporter: little alexandria is now in high school and expects to have to pay for college in a couple of years partly with the gift from her grandparents. >> that was michael finney reporting p weapon have information about how to find unclaimed money about abc7.com. go to the sections tab and check on 7 on your side. 8:43 is our time. great start to the weekend for some parts of the bay area. hopefully more sun later today. >> not right here. golden gate bridge camera.

we've ban following developments where kate the duchess of cambridge gave birth to a baby girl. moments ago we saw prince william and prince george arrive at the hospital. live look from st. mary's hospital. the birth was announced just before 3:30 pacific time. weighs in at 8 pounds 3 ounces. the first princess born into the british royal family since her great aunt princess ann in 1950. exciting day for all of england but much of the world has been tuned in to baby watch the last few months. >> he was very cute waving, little brother there. we have a nice afternoon today. waiting it out over in our east bay. yesterday really the temperatures came down all around the bay except for you folks that experience those 90s from brentwood to concorde to livermore. but take a look. right now low clouds and fog along the coast. that's where it will stay. lit be cloudy. in the 50s. and you can see the marine layer

here. it will cool you off. low 80s today will be the warmest numbers. out towards brentwood and antioch. temperatures tomorrow even cooler. san jose, 55. as well as san carlos in oakland, 53 in the city where it is sunny at the airport. and half-moon bay, a few degrees warmer. the clouds are parting here. and so the gray lifting a little bit. it will be breezy, low 60s in the city. 51 santa rosa. all the gray up in the north bay taking a little bit longer but boy, that southerly surge yesterday felt pretty good in the afternoon. but not everyone experienced it. southwesterly wind bringing the cooler air into the delta today. and here at the beach, temperatures came down to about 70 in santa cruz today. cooler. cloudy coast and bay this morning. inland sunny and sunshine works just about to the coast. but it's not going to make it. it's going to be great. we will look for the cooler temperatures into tomorrow as well with numbers out of the 80s for the most part. so high pressure continues to

drift to the east taking the heat, the dome of heat with it. and marine layer of growing tall ever and spreading into the valleys tomorrow. this morning the cooler air was transported but not the fog. so you were sunny in our east bay valleys. still hot though from yosemite 82 there. 88 in sacramento. cooler and the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm in the high country. look for 78 in los angeles. and let's show you where you're going to be throughout much of the week in san jose. today, 77. yesterday was in the 80s. tomorrow will be another four or five degrees cooler. notice low 70s around monday and tuesday. and not much of a bump throughout the rest of the week. so no heat coming back. you know, when we do have that heat it's only usually a one- or two-day deal. looking at 69 for oakland today with cooler numbers. tomorrow, monday, and then a bit of a bump up for you as well. but looking like the numbers should for the first week of may
