for jody and ease spur -- esperanza. they were killed by a suspected it dui driver. this evening people recited the catholic rosary for the victims in this crash. 14-year-old jody morales and her mother, esperanza. they were in livermore to celebrate a first holy communion pour a -- for a family member. >> at saint michael's church. >> santiago hernandez was there when the corvette tore into the backyard where children and parents were celebrating. they were crushed by the car. this is 35-year-old brian jones posing with the new corvette in a facebook post from last year. police say he was likely speeding. >> i can tell you at the scene he did consent to a paz test and it was a .13 and a .14 on a plim their alcohol screening

device. >> he was charged with two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and dui causing injury. police say he had been at the livermore wine country festival earlier in the day. jones has since been released on $350,000 bail but no one answered the door at his livermore home. friends of the victims are not happy he is already out. >> i don't understand because for less than this people go to jail for many years. this guy probably just because he has money or something. it is terriable. >> the family of jody and esperanza have raised money to help transport their bodies back to monterey county. abc7 news. new details on how dozens of passengers escaped from a burning tour bus in san francisco. cell phone video shows the scary scene. witnesses heard explosions coming from the bus engine and saw flames shooting several feet into the air.

a pizza shop owner ran out with a ladder and climbed up the side of the double decker bus to tell people on the upper level to evacuate. he said they had no idea what was going on. >> i have seen crazy things on the street since i have been here but i have never seen a tour bus catch fire. it was definitely a tiers. >> no one was hurt. abc7 news contacted big bus tours to ask about the con diecious and whether a -- condition and whether a safety inspection had within done. they had not responded as of news time. a series of earthquakes reported in the east bay. the largest was a 3.6. here is an intensity map to check out. it shows the areas that felt the quakes. the blue near vallejo indicates the areas that felt it the most. abc7 news reporter lilian kim tells us there was minor damage. >> a falling ceiling tile at the wal-mart is the extent of

the earthquake damage. there are no reports of broken glass. someone of a surprise to the seismic experts. he -- >> events of similar magnitude have a different type of shaking at the surface and possibly more damage. this one didn't. why exactly that is is not clear. >> the earthquake was originally recorded at a 4.0 magnitude. it struck just south of concord that was preceded by smaller ones. some felt the 3.6 quake more than others. >> it was a big shake. it woke me up. >> i was walking down and i said hold on. i said you feel something? >> the series of quakes occurred on a concord green valley fault. they estimate that the last large quake on the fault was anywhere from 200 to 500 years ago.

the concord green valley fault was also same fault where a similar sized earthquake occurred 15 years ago. that too had zero to minimal damage. >> the historical records one of the faults had certainly caused us less of a concern in the bay area. >> but people can expect aftershocks in the coming days and weeks. lilian kim, abc7 news. let's head now to our meteorologist with more on today's earthquake. drew? >> and katie just shortly after the main quake at 3:13 in the afternoon we had several aftershocks that are less in intensity, but giving a tell in the east bay. we have fog upstairs but in terms of aftershocks for the live doppler 7hd on the earthquake scale, the strongest is just one minute after the main quake 2.7 in magnitude. the most recent aftershock was at 6:54 p.m. with 2 pone 3 in

strength. it has been quite awhile so good news there. coming up, the new workweek brings changes and a chance of rain drops. katie? >> thank you. rough surf forced a cruiseship to dock in san diego. the waves in long beach made it too dangerous to dock there. so the imagination cruiseship docked in san diego instead. passengers scheduled to leave later in the day were bussed down in long beach. police in texas say they shot and killed two men who opened fire on a controversial event. it happened just outside dallas this afternoon. a group called american freedom defense initiative was holding a contest for cartoon depictions of the prophet mohamed. according to tradition, any physical depiction is highly offensive. police say they should and killed the two men when they started shooting at a security

guard. a week after a 9-year-old boy was killed in his home the giants honored the young baseball fan. a moment of silence was held before today's game at at&t park. an 18-year-old family friend is charged with stabbing the boy to death last sunday. jordy played for the angels in his pony league and his teammates attended the game. the giants presented his family with a jersey in his honor. new at 11:00 a north bay artist has been reunited with an expensive painting after an accidental art heist. the incident was caught by surveillance cameras last month. abc7 news aired this video on thursday. a couple came upon the large painting and a blank canvas outside an apartment, and they thought the items were for the taking. they were not. he made a public plea for the couple to return the items and they did after their friends saw the story on the news. >> i have done that kind of thing. seen a pile of junk and

for decades women have been working their way through the ranks in the police department. there is still one department though where the numbers are low, homicide. ama daetz has one woman's story. >> reporter: watching tv you would think there is a woman homicide detective in every department in america. >> in your dreams. >> reporter: but just 15% of homicide detectives thaition wide are female. san francisco homicide inspector holly perra is one of them. there were just 20 women in the department when she joined the force in 1980. in 1998 she became the first female homicide detective in

the department's history. >> it was an interesting day because i just wanted to fit in. i just wanted to do my job but there was a lot of attention drawn to the fact that i was there. there are more than 300 women in the city's police department. but just two work in homicide. >> at one point we had six or seven, but they would come and go. >> she worked with a male partner most of her career. >> there would be people who seek him out because he is the male, and they just think he will get it done. >> she says many people reached out to her because she is a woman. >> they would seek me out if they needed the emotional support. >> one case in particular still haunts her. 24-year-old evelyn hernandez was eight months pregnant when she disappeared in 2002. >> she had a little boy as well that was 5 years old. she had gotten herself involved with a married man. >> hernandez's torso was

discovered floating in the bay a month later and the 5-year-old was never found. >> that case troubles me. >> she retired in twenty 12, but works -- 2012, but works part-time on cold cases. young was found sexually strangled and assaulted in the hotel where she lived with her family. dna evidence uncovered found her killer. >> i will never forget the day that that report came back from the state with a hit and the name was richard ramirez. >> ramirez was better known as "the night stalker" and sentenced to death row for 13 murders. para and her partner closed the case. there are still shelves of cases to be solved. para hopes more women will consider a career in homicide. maybe one of those women who watch the female homicide detectives on tv.

along the coast where the fog will lippinger for the longest amount of time. that will have an affect on our temperature. below average for monday. half moon bay is cloudy and cool. downtown san francisco is up to 60 tomorrow. that's 6 degrees below normal for this time of year. oakland up to 63 for monday. 70 in wall thut creek and ante -- walnut creek and antioch up to 70 degrees. the area of low pressure will sink to the south and it will be a slow-moving system. that means an unsettled pattern for thursday and friday of next week. the future weather does show you as it sinks south energy rotates around. thursday afternoon could have a few rain drops. it creates an unsettled pattern and we could track a few thunder showers. we will see foggy conditions and upper 40s to lower 50s across the region. and then highs for your monday and you do notice right along

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center. >> in tonight's headlines, a memorial is growing for a mother and her 14-month-old daughter killed in a suspected it dui crash in livermore. police say brian jones crashed his speeding corvette into an apartment on murieta boulevard on saturday. jones had been at a wine festival earlier in the day. investigators are trying to find out what caused a tour bus to catch fire. dozens of passengers escaped without any injuries. only minor damage after a series of earthquakes in the east bay today.

the vice president delivered the keynote speech at the fight for freedom fund dinner. another republican says he is running for president. retired neurosurgeon ben carson. carson never held political office before, but he said he will seek the 2016gop presidential nomination. he hopes to use his success as an author and public speaker to run a more competitive campaign against seasoned politicians. a 101-year-old man has been rescued from the rubble of his home a week after the massive earthquake. the death toll in nepal stands at 7200 people. nine americans are still missing. five u.s. helicopters have arrived from bringing supplies, but cargo planes can't land right now because they have already done too much damage to the small airport's runway.

nearly 4,000 refugees were rescued on the mediterranean sea. the italian coast guard recovered at least 10 bodies in the water. it is part of a larger crisis. they are taking advantage of the waters to send boat loads of refugees across the mediterranean to europe. las vegas police say 27 -year-old evan grant took a twin-engine plane from the north las vegas airport after midnight yesterday. he realized he was in pretty big trouble when he started talking to an air traffic controller. >> screwed up your night didn't i? >> we will grab a coffee and go to my house. we will have -- we'll just talk okay? pull it down. >> after about an hour grant finally landed and police were waiting to take him to jail.
